Can someone explain to me how one makes screencaps? I'm wondering if it's something I can do easily with the programs I have and I just don't realize it. I've been wanting to make some screencaps of videos I have on my hard drive, but haven't a clue how to do it. Thanks in advance.

I use [edited] , it's free, light and very easy to use. It allows you to take screencaps clicking a button on your keyboard.

I use Free Screenhunter (http://www.download.com/ScreenHunter/3000-2192_4-10215821.html?tag=lst-0-1) , it's free, light and very easy to use. It allows you to take screencaps clicking a button on your keyboard.
RomyGreat! I'll download it. Thank you! :)

You don't even need an external program.
For Windows users press your Print Screen key on your keyboard to capture what you want (it copies the entire screen, Alt Print Screen will capture just one window).
Open MS Paint (Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint) and paste your image (Click Edit menu Paste).
Click the rectangular tool to outline (crop) what you want.
Click Edit > Cut to copy your cropped image.
Click File > New to start a new file.
Click No to save changes.
Click Edit > Paste to paste your cropped image.
Then click File > Save to save it.
Or, if you're just copying one window exactly as it is shown just press Alt + Print Screen then paste that into Paint and save it.

Eh, that doesn't always work. Sometimes you'll get a black image or a pink image instead of what you want. If that happens, you'll have to go into the program you're watching the video in and change the hardware acceleration to the lowest setting.
If you're looking to make caps of an .mpg or .avi (not sure about the latter), I'd use the Project Wizard that comes with TMPEGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html). Works pretty well. With that, you can go frame-by-frame and Print Screen it and paste it into whatever image editing program you want and you're golden.
For DVDs, I use PowerDVD, but sometimes it has a capping option and sometimes it doesn't, it seems. I got lucky and mine has it.
As for .MOV files, I'm pretty sure those can be capped via the method SuzeQuze posted. :)
The Print Screen worked on my avi's from the Mansfield show. I just double checked the format. And here is the capture:

Well, Suze's idea didn't work, but that program did. Of course, i ended up with a virus, but my security program caught it & destroyed it. :o

I downloaded Romy's, but I can't be sure that's where I got the virus. It was pretty big coincidence that a virus was detected shortly after I got the program, though. No biggie, it's outta here now.

I'm really sorry :sorry:, I'm always very cautious (got Spybot, Adaware, spyware blaster, antivirus program, firewall... :D ) and download programs only after having checked the editorial reviews and the commentaries from other users. It didn't give problems to me, but it's always possible there's something hidden. Was it spyware? By the way, just to be sure, I'll go to remove the link.

Oh, no, I don't blame you at all. It may not have even been that particular download. I have all kinds of protection on my computer too, so it's not a problem. The program itself works great, btw. Very easy to use.
