LONDON, England (AP) -- Katie Holmes says she's converting to the Church of Scientology, embracing the religion of her boyfriend, Tom Cruise.

Holmes, in London to promote her new film, "Batman Begins," said Monday that she's excited about her lessons in Scientology, a religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

The 26-year-old actress and Cruise went public with their romantic relationship in April. The former Catholic and star of television's "Dawson's Creek" grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

"We all keep dreaming, and luckily, dreams come true," Holmes said.

Cruise was in Tokyo Monday for the premiere of his new film, "War of the Worlds."

In an interview in the June 17 issue of Entertainment Weekly, the 42-year-old actor was asked if Holmes is curious about Scientology.

"Yeah, absolutely. She digs it," he tells the magazine.

In response to a question about whether he'd asked Holmes not to do "Factory Girl" -- about Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol -- because of the drug use in the movie, Cruise says: "I don't even know what 'Factory Girl' is."

He adds: "Listen, the thing you've got to know about Katie is that she's an incredibly bright and self-determined woman. She makes her own decisions."

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, and dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly if he plans to propose to Holmes, Cruise replies: "It's gonna happen, man. It'll happen."

But, it makes no sense. Why would Scientology care about Katie Holmes. She is far from a big name star earining $20 or so million a picture. She is a relative no name in the big scheme of things. Moreover, Batman, of which she is not the star, seemingly will do well on its own as will War of the Worlds. So, I guess he must like her, which is just bizarre in its own roght because she is almost half his age, though that does happen all of the time I guess.

If anything, I think she has far more to gain by dating and/or marrying him.

Age is relative:

mentally" , "emotionally" & "chronologically" don't always meet. Katie & Tom no doubt meet in the first two, but obviously not the latter.

This is just so distressing to me. I swear, I wish that people could understand how harmful scientology is in the substance abuse world. I wonder if these stupid celebrities have any idea what goes on in these facilities. Of course, as we know, Tom himself has saved hundreds of people from drugs, so maybe he does know.

Exactly, the Landmark people are the ones who run the forum, as you mentioned, which made my friend snap. Granted she probably had a predisposition but she never would have suffered from this "break" if she hadn't attended the forum. I felt awful for her. I went through it too and it was the most bizarre experience of my life. *Runs to get Free Katie t-shirt*

Jason, I think she is doing this more to please her boyfriend than anything else. Scientology just wants bodies and its just a plus if they are famous. They'll try and recruit anyone.

1 UK INFORMAL shaky, weak or unsatisfactory:
One of the legs on this chair is a bit wonky.
He may have to stop playing cricket because of his wonky knee.
The jury system may be a bit wonky but nobody's ever thought of anything better.

2 INFORMAL not straight or level:

I think his acting reflects his lack of intelligence. He doesn't learn, he's repetitive, the only thing he's good at is to exaggerate and luckily for him two great directors like Stone e P.T. Anderson and a good one, Michael Mann have been able to transform a defect in a quality, at least for three movies. He doesn't even try to build a character, there's no deepness, or creativity. Kubrick has built a statue to his incapacity to see, to react, to be an actor. That doesn't mean he can't be successful. I didn't say he was stupid, he knows what he can and what he can't do. But what he does hasn't for most of the time any interest for me. About the actual situation: if the story is true, he's proving to be incapable to protect from himself the woman he loves; if it isn't true he's been dull enough to accept this farce. In both cases he's not showing intelligence to me.

I say it would be over in less than a year. I hope she really didn't buy she could become a star like Nicole Kidman only staying with Cruise. There's a whole world of class between them. I think Katie Holmes has a potential, but to renounce to a controversial role to make his Beverly Hills prophet happy doesn't show that kind of courage that a real actress should have, IMO.

This is kind of how I saw it too, it was Kubrick's folly moreso.

You should read Traumnovelle, the Schnitzler story Kubrick based it on. I, personally, thought he did an absolutely brilliant job with the material. Tom Cruise was horrific (and while I usually lay a lot of blame on directors for bad performances, not even Kubrick could get water out of a stone...), but I didn't expect him to be even adequate in the first place. The reason it flopped so badly was because it was marketed so badly. Just look at the first week returns and then the STEEP decline in ticket sales for the second week. It was promoted as an erotic T&A flick, which was a crime.

Yes because expecting that it left you extremely cold :shudder:. Where there was a lack of dialog I'm sure the book was much better since you can get into the character's heads, I love that about books.

I like some of what he did with The Color Purple, but looking back on it, he gave it such a white man's touch that it's actually quite offensive to the source material. Empire of the Sun was watchable only because Christian Bale was so ****ing fantastic in it. That man was one hell of an actor even at such a young age, they could have put him in a red wig and he would have singlehandedly saved Annie.

Remember when all the Rice fans and Rice herself were in a tizzy over Cruise being cast? Rice ate her words when it was released on video for who knows why, but he was still crap in it. Everyone was, but Dunst was still the best. That says a lot, when a ten year old is the best actor in a movie.

No, it failed because the studio promoted it as a film about eroticism when it was anything but. The mainstream movie-going public went into it expecting a Tom Cruise skin flick and didn't get that at all.

I'd say 40 minutes or so of over a 100 people fu&*ing and women romping around buck naked and in feathers in a masked ball of hedonism was nothing but erotic  Even Tom and Nicole showed a lot of skin for them

In the end, the story from which it was derived ( Arthur Schnitzler's "Traumnovelle" ) was melodramatic domestic strife in a shocking Marcel waved bob when it was written (1926) - but whose 20's morality played understandably dated in Kubrick's malingned telling of it almost 80 years later. Plus, that AWFUL one chord "score" - OY Kubrick was deaf as well as dying

As for Cruise as an actor, he will never be great, but I like his movies and he has played a wide varitey of parts, for which I give him credit.

Well and again, he goes to an orgy where many are romping around naked and doing all sorts of sex acts. The visual of that (and Kubrick was brazen there) is erotic regardless of the strife the protagonist is feeling. So, yes, it was an erotic setting. I am really unsure how you could argue it was not. Even the author of the book admitted to its erotic nature  But, in the end, the book was a study of human sexuality and the domestic problems that occur within that. Naked bodies do not necessarily equate eroticism, nor do they make a movie that isn't erotic erotic. The violent and disturbing theme of the sex in it was more disturbing and unsettling than anything else, and it only served to underscore the idea that Bill (Cruise's character) was dreaming up all of it as an expression of his repressed sexuality, but that the dark nature of it was his mind telling him that it was a sort of shadow that he should not act on in the real world. His wife expressed her shadow to him early on in the film and the rest of it is the expression of his, the scene where he confesses to her when he sees the mask next to her pillow suggests as much. When she says at the end that they have to go home and "f*ck," it's indicative of the two of deciding to move forward and put their "dark" urges behind them; that they've successfully integrated their urges into their minds.

The fact remains that it flopped because people expected a hot sex flick, when it turned out to be a cold and steely flick about marriage and sexual repression. The campaign was all about "See Tom nude!" "See SEX SEX SEX!" Well, people saw that, but it wasn't erotic and it was presented in a disturbing manner that probably repulsed more than it turned on.

Perhaps - but Kubrick most certainly did not film it that way.

I know that - but his thoughts were erotic in nature  Thus, the fliming of that is inherently erotic despite any larger message that goes along with that. I think we are arguing the same thing though. You assert the true meaning of the image, which is not erotic; it is cerebral - which I agree with and that is what the movie is about. My point is despite that, the images are erotic in nature despite the deeper underlying dark nature of them. The movie 8MM always depicts this double meaning - only in a far darker way.

No, he didn't film naked bodies in an erotic manner, at least not that I could see. He filmed naked bodies as objects for the sake of the movie, which robbed the nudity of any eroticism or "sexiness." The use of nudity was cold.

And I'm not arguing that the mere sight of naked bodies isn't erotic to someone. I'm sure there were a few that were turned on by the disturbing sexuality in the movie. The whole movie was built on the desires of the married couple, which are erotic in nature. But to say that the movie itself is erotic simply because of that comes across as inane to me.

And those people are the reason the movie bombed. Because they didn't comprehend it and told other people that other than some titties, it was boring and pointless.

Personally, I think that the reason it got such TERRIBLE reviews was because the studio promoted it as a hot sex romp, but when the critics saw it, they were desperately looking for all of it but found none. Instead of looking any further than for tits and ass, they lashed out at it as being unsexy and boring. They were too preoccupied with trying to get their own rocks off that they ignored literally every aspect of it.

that some found it erotic pretty much means it was erotic despite any deeper message, which I agree was there, though Kubrick IMO failed to demonstrate that message to any significant degree. Compare this flick to A Clockwork Orange, which had the same erotic feel/tension, but the message of violence was far stronger. Like in the scene in A Clockwork Orange where he takes the two girls home for a high speed romp, EWS had intimate moments between the Harford's. Same with the violent scenes in both - but the violence in the former was far stronger. These two films are different storylines, but both deal with inner demons and the violence that can result from that. I just think Kubrick lost his edge in EWS, though I actually like the movie.

I thought the failure of EWS was mostly Kubricks and the subject matter or more Kubrick's interpretation of it. The story was very dated and outlandish.

Did he have to spell it out for the audience? I thought he did it superbly. It all culminated so well with his confession and her exclaiming that they needed to "f*ck" in order to put it behind them that I was surprised at how well Kubrick pulled it off. And I usually LOATHE him. If you just go into it expecting a topical thriller, you're going to be bored stuff and not understand a lick of it.

I despise A Clockwork Orange and I've only seen it once, so I can't really get into a discussion of it, but you can't really get into a debate over the use of violence in either because they're so wildly different in presentation. In EWS, the violence was sexual violence that wasn't overt to the average moviewatcher. In ACO, it beat you over the head to the point where you couldn't escape the message of it all. I found it very poor, but I know I'm in the minority. MacDowell acted on his urges, Cruise didn't and they simply manifested in his dream where he STILL didn't act on them (and whether Kidman did is up to interpretation, but I don't believe she did).

Well, I will always think that was solely because he is black because his performance was not that great either. Such is politics.

Of course it was because he was black, which I found to be repugnant. His performance was nothing memorable and I don't see the big deal over him. Even Halle Berry, who was utterly amazing, didn't wholly deserve that Oscar, but she got it because she was black. Miss Goldberg should've won that Best Actress Oscar back in '85, but they waited for Halle Berry? Bitch plz.

Well, it did take almost three years to shoot. I mean, it took so long that Jennifer Jason Leigh and Harvey Keitel had to drop out after filming all of their scenes but couldn't fit in reshoots two years later. Kubrick was probably trying to get Cruise to respond to women sexually all those years.

Wow, that sucks for the movie because those two are so spooky they would certainly have enhanced it. I love JJL even though she frightens me sometimes.

I like some of what he did with The Color Purple, but looking back on it, he gave it such a white man's touch that it's actually quite offensive to the source material.
I really liked the book. I initially liked the movie, however, looking back on it after a year or two it was "The Song of the South" of the 80's. Oprah Winfrey was shameless in her Aunt Jemima impersonation.

Not a fan of Mr. Ed? ;)
She has never given a good performance in anything. Abysmal.

I liked Jerry Maguire and I even liked Vanilla Sky but IMO, Cruise is playing himself, with certain variations in all of these films. It started to become evident after a while that he was playing variations of Tom Cruise after a while.
He can't play a character. It's always Tom Cruise as a race car driver, Tom Cruise as a vampire, Tom Cruise as a psycho, Tom Cruise as a Vietnam vet. He blows.

Feh, I thought Oprah was good enough. She's not an actress by any stretch, but she put Rae Dawn Chong to shame. Goldberg and Avery were simply magnificent, though.

Spielberg's version of it is just awful to me. He laid waste to the relationship between Celie and Shug to the point where it was laughable and one wondered if he had ever even read the book. His take on it was a sanitized, children's story, devoid of any of the depth and emotion that the novel had.

Loved the movie (although it IS a guilty pleasure- mainly for its production design), but the performances were gawdawful. Brad Pitt??!?!? Antonio Banderas?!?!!??!? Kirsten Dunst overacting allllll over the place. Needless to say, Cruise was soooo trying too hard to "act".

It was beautiful to look at, but the acting was heinous. Does ANYONE understand anything Banderas says ? He might as well have a mouthful of Melanie when he acts. His accent is ridiculous and all he does is mutter, mumble, and speedtalk.
Dunst gave the performance of a lifetime though, IMO. She grew up and sure got ugly. Man is she a dog now.

I am the first to admit that I am a jaded, bitter old queen. However, my heart leapt with inspired joy when I saw the Balrog scene in the theatre for the first time. Very few things get me anymore- but that (and many others from LOTR) got me good.

But he's lost a few points with me.
Oh please.... no one can be Dissentastic all the time. :p

I'd bang him. Hard. Really hard.
:wavey: Hella, yeah babeeee!! Viggo is mucho ****able. He is allllll man.

Yo, get in line.
"To be standing in a line
Welllll, I would!!!!!"

I would accept thirsty thirds or flatulent fourths on Mister Viggo.

Damn, he was hot in LOTR.
I'll take Dominic Monaghan... I wouldn't throw Orlando outta bed, but I prefer him out of his LOTR getup.

I remember when they had just begun shooting that Kingdom of Heaven flick and there were stories in the rags about him not being able to grow chest hair, so they had to put a chest wig on him. That? Cracked me up.

Ah well, it's for the best. I'm not into overly hairy guys anyway. Now, Hayden looked mighty fine in that shirtless scene in Stars Wars, and he didn't have much chest hair either. Woot.

I'm not really sure what this sentence means. Look, most of the country for 20 years has liked Cruise. We all (all the people my age) fell in love with Risky Business, Top Gun, (though of course there was always a Cruise/Kilmer debate. I say, why pick? I'll have them both! ) and that show me the money film. He's so likeable. That's just it. So, I have no shame in liking him. Plus, he has features that I, personally, find handsome.
