Pink Floyd to reform for London Live 8 concert

LONDON (Reuters) - Four members of seminal British rock band Pink Floyd will play together for the first time in 24 years at London's Live 8 charity concert for Africa on July 2, publicists for the event said on Sunday.

Guitarist, David Gilmour, drummer, Nick Mason and keyboard player, Richard Wright will be on stage with bassist, Roger Waters for their first public performance since they played at London's Earls Court in 1981.

The rock legends will join a star-studded line-up including Coldplay, Elton John and Paul McCartney at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, organized by activist rocker Bob Geldof to pressure rich nations to ease African poverty.

"Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," said Gilmour.

"Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention then it's got to be worthwhile."

The band released their first album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" in 1967 and broke records with 1973's "The Dark Side Of The Moon," which remained in the American album charts for more than a decade.

In the 1980s relations between Waters and the rest of the group soured, with Waters suing over the rights to the Pink Floyd name.

Gilmore, Mason and Wright continued to record and tour as Pink Floyd, releasing their last studio album "The Division Bell" in 1994.

I saw this on CNN's website earlier today, and all I can say is WOW. If this leads to a reunion and tour, I will pay ridiculous amounts of money to sit up close!

DAMN! Thats amazing. Think of what it would be like to go to this show.. Pink Floyd, Madonna, Elton John, U2, Paul McCartney. How amazing would that be? I wonder how many songs every performer will get?

I will be in Hyde Park on the 2nd July no matter what.. I've sent a lot of texts to the Live 8 number for the ticket lottery...

I'm surprised that Roger Waters actually called David Gilmour personally yesterday to agree..

Gilmour, Waters, Mason and Wright together once more, if only for one day.... Quite amazing...

But you never know what may happen.. Gilmour has new material and wants to tour at some point, Waters has new material and wants to tour soon... All we can do is watch it unfold before our eyes...

I saw this this morning on CNN's home page and it made my day. Live 8 is going to really be something.
The Division Bell tour in '94 was one of the last big stadium shows I ever saw.

That's cool that Pink Floyd are getting back together for this concert but I can never get into their music. I know they're totally popular and they're on the radio all the time but no matter how much I hear their music I still really don't like it. PK is just one band that has never grown on me.

So why can't Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac do this as a one off, too? I mean, they'd be doing this for charity, which should please Peter and Jeremy! C'mon Mick, get on the horn ASAP!
