All these top 10 lists got me thinking: What about the top 10 references and metaphors in La Nick's songs that are just totally out there? Songs or phrases that you wish she would re-work? Words that just don't fit? Songs about stuff that you just can't relate to? I couldn't come up with 10, but here are my top songs that I find just ackward:

Jane - no need to elaborate
Paper Doll - refusing to wear a coat
Nightbird - makeup and boots
That Made Me Stronger - song writing
I Miss You Now - European cities and fame questions
Seven Wonders - Emmiline
Love Is - the track of my tears
Kick It - kick what?

Kick It - kick what?

Bbbwwwaaaahahahahahaha! Amber's gonna Kick yours!

ITA with you, btw. ;)

Docklands & the laundrymat

Street Angel - I've come to love the music & vocal, but the lyrics? Ugh. I still don't really know what a Street Angel is (I just know that they live on the streets & they always will.)

Ooh My Love - the whole castle thing - eh.

There's one that's been bugging me lately, I can't think of it right now....

 Oh I'd love to see Stevie going to the laundromat in her platforms.

One thing I'll say about Ooh My Love, TOSOTM was recorded in an old castle if I recall correctly, so I guess it's about her affair with Rupert Hine which would have been "in the shadow of the castle walls".

Wow, I love the lyrics to Nightbird. "I wear boots all summer long" that's fantastic to me.

But I agree about the cringe-worthy lyrics to TMMS.

Hmm, I dunno. I just know it was a Dutch-style castle and apparently it was "fabulous"
It cost a bomb too. I think they converted it into a recording studio, if I recall correctly, I don't think it was one to start with.

Here are some lines that have me perplexed:

"There is a world that rises within the wind rose" from 24K Gold

"Sometimes the real color of my skin... my eyes without any shadow." from Nightbird

"The blankets that I love..." from Nightbird

"I wear boots all summer long." from Nightbird... kind of see a pattern here?

"In silence she says 'Excalibur.'" from Sable on Blond... WTF????

"Tar People" from Space Needle

"You fill the room with the wind and the rain and the water." from No Spoken Word, as opposed to "...the rooms are all on fire everytime you walk in the room." from Rooms on Fire. Hmmm... fire, wind, water... we are only missing earth. How 'bout, "You fill the room with mud every time you walk in the room."

"One set of doors was the color of honey; one set of doors was pink and grey." from Affairs of the Heart.

"And if I was a child, and the child was enough...for me to love... enough to love." from Gypsy

Perhaps someone should write a murder mystery where the clues are based on Stevie song lyrics... call it "The Stevie Nicks Code."

Ever read her explanation of that line? PRICELESS.

"Tar People" from Space Needle

Tar people are heroin junkies, which fits because the song smacks of being about her stint in rehab, but it's just a bad line in an otherwise fabulous song.

"One set of doors was the color of honey; one set of doors was pink and grey." from Affairs of the Heart.

I think it makes the "sad - very true" line more literal - but it is an awkward phrasing and I LOVE the song

That sounds like something she'd say, actually.

I adore the song, but that whole section is awkward. It just doesn't work and the reference to "tar people" is simply laughable. Only she could call heroin junkies "tar people" and then use it in a song. She's a good writer, I'm sure she can come up with something better and more creative to express the failure of their stints in rehab.

I LOVE "One set of doors was the color of honey; one set of doors was pink and grey." I think it is a cliche, but I like the imagery she invokes - so sue me

Just that line? Contribute the whole song. Nothing she's ever written sounds as forced and self-aware than that one; it sounds as if she's actively trying to parody herself. I might believe it, too, if she wasn't under the influence of drugs so heavily.

I know - the song is all about copying Willy S. and trite imagery. The demo was better, but she cut like 1/3 of the lines in the final product - Klonopin haze indeed.

Considering she wrote it with Chris, it's probably a miracle it's this good.

That's right. Now I remember - I rarely listen to that song because it is not that good IMO.

But, what the hey:

The Nightmare
- written by s. nicks, c. nicks
- appears on Rock A Little (1985)
- b-side of single & 12" single I Can’t Wait (U.S. July 1986); 12" single contains

extended mix
Lyrics

Thrown down through the arms of sleep
She fell through the ivory morning
Deep into the waters
Of the one she called love
She paled in the wake
Of what some call a dream
But, you cannot know a dream
Till you've known the nightmare

When I stood with you against the storm
And I tried once again
Well, I said, "I'd like to leave you
With something warm"
How many times
Drowning in the sea
Drowning
That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But, the nightmare was not over
Still some call that a dream
The nightmare...the nightmare

Well, you cannot know a dream
When you turn away
You don't know
You'll never care
The night is not your friend
And you have not had her
And when the nightmare ends
But, you never understand
When you're gone
She wakes up calling out
Oh, calling out
As children may cry as she will

Anytime...oh, anywhere
Blinded by the light of the day
She has known the nightmare

So about the moon and her sisters
How dare he take them prisoner
Well, if she had flung out her heart against him
Then in all of her wisdom
Oh, well that was a mystery

That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But the nightmare was not over
Somewhere in her ancient ways
She walks through the night
And then she tries to get through the day
Some will never know
Or share any kind of dream

The nightmare
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the world
The nightmare
She wants him to fight...anytime, anywhere
She wants him to stand up
She wants him to win
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the real world
Blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the light
She was blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the day

I always thought "Let me put you on ice" was a bit odd sounding. What does she want to keep something hard?  Oh wait that won't work!
It means..."let me cool down your heat, baybeh!" ;)

I still don't like it. I mean you say that about Champagne, not a person.

And I'd like to see this lady from the mountains she's always talking about. I'm picturing an old witch who hasn't bathed in years lol.

I'm fairly sure it's her too it's just not a pretty description of someone. I'm thinking a hermit in the woods lol.

The mentioning of "the tar people" in one of my all time faves, Space Needle. I have been suspecting it is referring to opiate addicts. The tormentuous existance of so many musicians has been laced heavily with the use of opiate derivitives to such a degree that they seem inseparable. The turbid stories surrounding Mr. Cobain and some of his peers producing the deparate Seatle sound has become the stuff of legend. Legend begats great tales, songs and poetry ala the bardic tradition. Stevie, I suspect, holds dear these traditions even if the lady knows it or not. I base this theory from my experiences of being close to he who (in my opinion) is one of the standard bearers of the traditions of the bard, Donovan. Dispite the differences between Stevie and Donovan, they still have graphic stories full of autobiographical insight, mysticism, magic, arcane stories and beliefs and also the "other" world that may be going on right in front of us but we may be too concrete to see. They both aslo seem intrigued by Lewis Carroll. To apreciate Caroll shows an apreciation for fancy, the ability to let go of the mundane and to understand and savor how this creates contrast and artistic tension to the stubborn consistancy and purity of logic. In fact, Donovan has done "the Walrus and the Carpenter" and an outstanding "Jabberwocky". Perhaps the thought of Stevie squaring off against the manxome foe is too hilarious of a thought to surrender. Or stranger would be to see her walking arm-in-arm down the beach with the Walrus and the Carpenter. Although her explaining that oysters in Arizona aren't seafood might force a reader to blanche and snap the book shut.

It seems I have drifted into a tangent~~~~~hmmm~~~~~ Smack.....that's where I was going.......tar people....you know....

That's right. Now I remember - I rarely listen to that song because it is not that good IMO.

But, what the hey:

The Nightmare
- written by s. nicks, c. nicks
- appears on Rock A Little (1985)
- b-side of single & 12" single I Can’t Wait (U.S. July 1986); 12" single contains

extended mix
Lyrics

Thrown down through the arms of sleep
She fell through the ivory morning
Deep into the waters
Of the one she called love
She paled in the wake
Of what some call a dream
But, you cannot know a dream
Till you've known the nightmare

When I stood with you against the storm
And I tried once again
Well, I said, "I'd like to leave you
With something warm"
How many times
Drowning in the sea
Drowning
That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But, the nightmare was not over
Still some call that a dream
The nightmare...the nightmare

Well, you cannot know a dream
When you turn away
You don't know
You'll never care
The night is not your friend
And you have not had her
And when the nightmare ends
But, you never understand
When you're gone
She wakes up calling out
Oh, calling out
As children may cry as she will

Anytime...oh, anywhere
Blinded by the light of the day
She has known the nightmare

So about the moon and her sisters
How dare he take them prisoner
Well, if she had flung out her heart against him
Then in all of her wisdom
Oh, well that was a mystery

That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But the nightmare was not over
Somewhere in her ancient ways
She walks through the night
And then she tries to get through the day
Some will never know
Or share any kind of dream

The nightmare
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the world
The nightmare
She wants him to fight...anytime, anywhere
She wants him to stand up
She wants him to win
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the real world
Blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the light
She was blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the day

(kudos to the nicksfix)

She did.
And in several stories Guinevere is as well.

Also, I like the put you on ice line. I take it to mean save you for later or stay numb emotionally.

I also love this song, I don't get it

It is "le bete" on my WH album liner notes

I also just used the free online translate, and La Bete = The Bete
and Le/La Bette - The White Beet

Hmmm... I always thought "put you on ice" was a drug reference - along with "snow stream" and many others in Sorcerer...

These aren't obtuse, just not great:

The word "well" in every lyric - for the love of jeebus!

"You've shaken your faith in me, no
You've shaken my faith in everything else"

Almost all of Silver Girl

Well, what is really funny is, well, that Christine has, well, picked up Stevie's "well" habit. Listening to her little solo album, well, I couldn't get over all the "well"s in it.

Maybe we should start a thread for the double "wells"....

"Sometimes the real color of my skin... my eyes without any shadow." from Nightbird

I totally have to disagree with you on this one. It's so obvious, and makes total sense, IMO. I get the whole visual...wearing dark makeup, and sometimes her eyes are just as dark without any makeup- whether it's from staying up all night, crying, whatever. I think it's a great line.

Good grief! No, I didn't know that. I could understand the wells in live performances, if it's a nervous habit, or something to fill in a beat here or there. But why are they written into the lyrics and sung in the studio versions of songs? I even noticed Lindsey singing "Well" in the harmonies on SYW. Someone once wrote that Bruce Springsteen used "sir" as a crutch when he needed an extra syllable. Others said he used it to convey a casual folksy feeling. I wonder if all the wells are supposed to give the lyrics a conversational feeling. Doesn't make any sense to me in Stevie's case, as her lyrics are mostly far from casual/conversational. I really don't get it!
