This time rank your top ten Stevie songs by lyrics only. (In other words, based on lyrics alone from start to finish, what are Stevie's ten best songs?)
My picks:
1) The Highwayman
2) Edge Of Seventeen
3) Lady From The Mountain
4) Garbo
5) The Dealer
6) Wild Heart
7) Straight Back
8) She Still loves Him
9) Sara
10) Rhiannon

Okay, this was pretty hard, because I mainly pay attention to the music part anyway. I'm not sure I could really be completely objective.
1.Dreams
2.Storms
3.Inspiration
4. I Sing For the Things (back off, haters, or I'll take down my hair on your a**! And don't make me take my cape off for you!)
5.FFG
6.BC
7.SB (a strange choice probably, but those lyrics just make a lot of sense to me. It's a very effective use of words, IMO.)
8. Rhiannon
9.Edge
10. Kind of Woman - simple, but clear and effective.

Alrighty then. Stop starting interesting threads when I'm trying to go to sleep! Here goes..
1) Storms (always)
2) Sisters of the Moon
3) Twisted (some of the best lyrics ever written)
4) Beauty & The Beast
5) Sara
6) The Nightmare (f*cking love this song and how she incorporates Storms, SOTM, Sara and even Thrown Down - a little prophetic? - into it. This was a tough time for Stevie, but I so feel her and feel the meaning of this song).
7) Juliet
8) The Highwayman
9) Fall From Grace (gawd, can I relate to this one!)
10) Landslide
Honorable mentions to the ones that make me tingle, but aren't necessarily the best lyrically: Sweet Girl (I don't know if it's so much the lyrics, but this is one that makes my heart melt over and over again when I listen to it. I just love the sentiment), Silver Springs, Goodbye Baby, Love Is Like A River, Love Is and Beautiful Child (except for the part about falling in love at age 10  )

Interesting thread!
There's a whole period in the 1980s and 1990s -- say 1985-1993 -- when I like hardly any of her lyrics. But I think a lot of her recent lyrics, especially from SYW, are amazing.
1. China Doll
2. Storms
3. Silver Springs
(The "I'll follow you down" line alone is enough to cinch it)
4. Sara
5. Everybody Finds Out
("When love starts out in the darkness/It doesn't do well in the light" is genius, as is the rest of the song, though the music is kinda shallow)
6. Space Needle
(it has a Sara-like abstractness that I love)
7. Landslide
8. Fall from Grace
9. Destiny Rules
10. Beautiful Child

Goodbye Baby/Tower....the vocal she managed on the album version breaks my heart but the lyrics always reduce me to tears.
Twisted... my favorite song with incredibly meaningful lyrics
Fall From Grace....including verses she dropped on the album
Storms
Wild Heart...so heartwrenching
Beauty and the Beast
China Doll
Trouble in ShangriLa...some of her best writing ever
Silver Springs
Gypsy
I have ten but I must mention Stand Back and Edge. They both rock so hard that it tends to disguise the intensity and sadness in the lyrics. Stand Back is heartbreaking actually and her words touch me immensely. I am not sure if I think this is something that Stevie did intentionally..like LB does with particularly vulnerable lyrics...he covers them up with screaming or mumbling vocals and loud, aggressive and manic guitar work. Stand Back and Edge are very intense and heartwrenching songs that reflect a sad, lonely time for Stevie but she made them into rockers....

Landslide
Dreams
Gold Dust Woman
Silver Springs
The Highwayman
Kind Of Woman
Beauty & The Beast
Rose Garden
Candlebright
Fall From Grace
Whew, that wasn't easy. I had to stay away from the unreleased material entirely or I'd never have been able to keep it to 10. Even now, I am uncertain of my choices. More songs are popping in to my head. I must click submit before I make changes. :]

Too overproduced. It sounds like Stevie is competing at Night of a Thousand Chers.

Candlebright is a fookin amazing song. To bad horse teeth Crow had to ruin it. I especially like the Nomad demo.
EFO is another high energy song I adore. But am I correct that Stevie did not write the music, only the lyrics? If so it's dissappointing because I LOVE blasting that song in the car. Especially the little strings break down at the end where she sings "Don't you knoooooow".

Stevie's not relating her observations of a healthy, mature relationship. She's commenting on a childish, territorial relationship, and she conveyed that perfectly, IMO, with the classic "back off, bitch, he's mine"-type line.

Which, if you're correct, wouldn't exactly fit into the popular belief that the song is about Monica and Bill. I saw no "back off, bitch" drama in that saga, I saw a woman who was happy to be boffing the prez, a man happy to get oral, and a wife who didn't give a rats ass.

Agreed. It's not meant to be subtle as it is in so many of her other songs...it's meant to be rather in-your-face. I think many could, including Stevie, write something a bit better about "an immature, territorial relationship" than "You can't have him/I do have him." it's too blunt and sounds like the writer took the easy way out by being as uncreative as possible.

I don't think it's much of a departure from her norm, all she really does is sing and write about relationships for the most part. A minor shift in the way the relationship is viewed does not a big departure make for me. A departure from the norm is Illume, a song I don't really care for but give kudos to her for actually approaching like that. That took balls. EFO? Not so much.

She usually couches things in flowery shmowers, or uses imagery to get her point across. Here, she is just saying her point/emotions literally....raw, if you will. :D

I mean more the sound then the actual context of the song. C'mon, Josh...we all know Stevie is about unrequited love, love lost, bad relationships, being alone, etc. That's what makes Stevie undeniably Stevie. I think the song as a whole is incredibly appealing and I feel like the entire production and music of the song is so NOT a Fleetwood Mac sound (not even a Lindsey sound) that it is, actually, a departure from both she and the band, IMO....thusly, the norm. It's incredibly edgy and in your face and I love the song for that.

10. That's Alright/Designs of Love
Very simple song. Not that the lyrics are bad at all, I just think Straight Back & Gypsy have better lyrics.
The vocal soars on this song, though.

I'm not an Alanis fan, but I thought that album was pretty spectacular. Incredibly overplayed, but spectacular nonetheless. Too bad she can't dress for ****; she needs a gay man in her life more than Bobby Brown needs a lobotomy.
Agreed! BTW, been on perezhilton.com lately? Check out the latest on Bobby and Whitney.
Edit: Just saw your post about the same thing! "That's love!" :D

On the subject of EFO, I don't think those are her best lyrics either. I wish I could think it's *hot*, but it just doesn't sound like Stevie. "You can't have him, I do have him most of the time." Is she talking about Bill and Monica because it doesn't sound like their relationship. It doesn't sound like one Stevie would have either. Maybe 20 years ago, but not now. I think the lyrics are a little childish for her, too. She writes some really profound words and always seems to disguise some or most of her meanings, to be interpreted by the listener. The EFO lyrics were too overt and second-gradish for what she's capable of. Yes, Alanis does that and I like Alanis. But, that's her thing. Stevie usually does her thing with more maturity and class. :sorry: I don't hate the song, but it's not one of the best things she's ever written.

Just as you've expressed that opinion repeatedly, I'll repeat myself too... ....I firmly believe the immaturity you see in those lyrics is intentional.
Stevie's not relating her observations of a healthy, mature relationship. She's commenting on a childish, territorial relationship, and she conveyed that perfectly, IMO, with the classic "back off, bitch, he's mine"-type line.
I disagree. I don't think she was purposely trying to sound "immature" or convey a thought about an immature relationship. I actually think it is just a different type of song for Stevie. She is commenting on things she doesn't usually write about... her own jealousy, her own possessiveness etc She will often write about the man's emotions...he can't live without her, he will die without her, he will carry the torch for her. I am sure others hear the song in a different way but that is how I hear it. This is a woman who refused to record a song like Reconsider Me because she said she couldn't relate to the lyrics of asking a man to "reconsider her". She really ventures out of that zone in the lyrics to EFO.......and shows spunk and possessiveness. I dig it. "everyday he calls me, he says he adores me, what can I say?".....love it! :D
I particularly like to listen to Lindsey's vocals on the one stripped down version we have where his vocals are more prominent. He sings with such emotion and conviction with such strong emphasis on "I DO HAVE HIM". Hot.
BTW...I am aware that some people think this song is about a relationship that Stevie is observing as an outsider but I do not...there are way too many "I'" and "my's" and "we's".

Too overproduced. It sounds like Stevie is competing at Night of a Thousand Chers.
It's not her worst, but it's my least favorite of hers on SYW.
- Jake
It's one of my least favorites too, but I've gained a bit of appreciation for it lately.
Imho the worst of Stevie on SYW is RTTG, and don't I know how much you LOOOOOOOOOVE that one . It's waaaaaaaaaaay too 80's sounding, and not in a good way.

I've often wondered about this. She said that Jimmy Iovine wanted her to record it but she was not in a "reconsider me" state of mind at the time. Is it because of their relationship and she didn't want to convey that message to him? Like maybe in her mind, recording that song would have been her having to play the hand-out to him in some way, and her pride wouldn't let her do it?

The simplicity is what makes it beautiful. Plus I think this song has very poignant, affecting lyrics--it's a great melancholy, self-reflective kind of a song. I appreciate that.

I actually really like RTTG. When I first purchased SYW, I was a bit iffy on it but eventually, it grew on me. That rates lower than Silver Girl for you?

RTTG should have been a single long before SYW was considered. Can you see a video done in black and white with goth girl falling for goth boy, and then a burst of color at the end when she breaks out of the garden, running away with him? Such a missed opportunity...
Why was it dropped from the tour? She "couldn't" handle it? Did anyone here see it?

I saw the second show of the SYW tour in Washington, D.C. The song was dropped by then...after the first show. I have a feeling more than her not being able to handle it, she's scared of how the crowd will react and I honestly think she's unsure of herself while she's performing new songs.

That actually sounds like a great video. ;)
I thought she tore it up live on the first night, but the crowd wasn't very into it and I don't think she had the vocal stamina to continue it throughout the tour. It's a shame it was dropped, because it transferred excellently live.

I hate RTTG too. What a dissapointment and waste of a song when she has so many others that are better and could have been on the album.
Side note: I checked SYW today and Stevie did NOT write the music for EFO. I am really dissapointed :( I know there has been a lot of discussion about the lyrics and I personally LOVE them and welcome the change but when I love a Stevie song that much I always prefer it be something she writes both the lyrics and music too. Oh well much love to Rick Knowels.
