Nicks, Henley no dynamic duo
While the Fleetwood Mac songstress carried her weight, the Eagles singer fell flat.
By DAVID PENCEK
Norwich Bulletin
MOHEGAN-- Don Henley and Stevie Nicks became the solo stars for two of the biggest bands during the 1970s.
In the 1980s, they both enjoyed solo success and recorded a hit duet single "Leather & Lace."
More than 20 years later, the song could have been used as an appropriate theme for the two's double-bill headlining show Monday in the Mohegan Sun Arena.
One could have also used the phrase "oil and water" because that's how different the two approached their portion of the three-hour concert.
Where Henley went through the motions and gave a passable, yet uninspired performance, Nicks was more energetic and responsive to the audience. She demonstrated why there are few equals to her when it comes to female rock singers.
Each performed 80-minute solo sets that included duets with the other. However, the two had little chemistry together, which is perhaps why press photographers were not allowed to take pictures when both were on stage.
Henley appeared stiff next to theatrical Nicks and he didn't even mention Nicks' name when she came on stage during his set. His only acknowledgment was, "She'll be back," as Nicks retired backstage. When he performed during Nicks' set, Henley stood in the dark next to Nicks' guitar player until it was his turn to sing.
At one point, Henley didn't know whether to hold Nicks' hand or not when she extended her hand out to him.
He didn't.
Henley even began the concert on a slow note. He didn't take the stage until 40 minutes after the scheduled 7 p.m. start time and he opened with the curious tune "The Genie," a song from his 2000 album "Inside Job."
Both Henley and Nicks mixed their sets with solo material and songs from their bands -- the Eagles for Henley and Fleetwood Mac for Nicks.
Nicks received an ovation when she came out to perform "Hotel California," "New York Minute" and "The Last Worthless Evening." The applause continued each time she finished her part of a song.
Henley's best moments came toward the end of his set with acoustic renditions of "The End of the Innocence" and "Desparado." His one encore was "I Will Not Go Quietly," although when compared to Nicks, he actually did.
After a 15-minute intermission, it was Nicks' turn. Her singing of "Rhiannon" continues to pack a powerful punch. She was consistently strong throughout with performances of "Gold Dust Woman," "Stand Back" and "Edge of Seventeen" highlighting her set.
Henley joined Nicks for "Gold Dust Woman," "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "The Circle Dance." He also came out for the encore that included "Leather & Lace."
Another difference in the two performances was Nicks allowing her band members to show off their talents. She left the stage several times to change outfits and her band, especially the drummer and percussionist, kept the show moving and increased the anticipation of the next song.
If you missed the show, Henley and Nicks will perform tonight at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, Mass.

The only reason I can conclude is that Don has not aged as gracefully as Stevie? Perhaps he feels he looks old/fat/weird next to her, and didn't want it immortalized in newspapers?

If Don is a jealous person, and I don't know that he is, he might be getting tired of Stevie stealing the show during his set. According to this review, it sounds like she's getting the lion's share of the applause when they're on stage together, much like she did (and so wonderfully captured via mp3 - thanks whomever is responsible for that) in Philadelphia.
If that's the case, his current lack of enthusiasm might just last the whole tour since it took Lindsey Buckingham around 20-something years to get over the same problem.

That is the exact impression I had of the show in Philly. Stevie really stole the show...although not intentionally. She is just fantastic. She tried with Don but he was sort of unresponsive to some degree. I mean he did respond SOME but not much, IMHO. He wouldnt even look at her while they were singing to each other. It was bizarre but I still enjoyed the show immensely.

ITA, this exactly how I saw it in Philly. I mean he still sounds good; they sound good together, but as far as interacting together, there's nothing there. I was there, too, to support Stevie. I felt bad for her though b/c of how he was acting.
I've never seen the Eagles perform. Does he act like this when he's with the other Eagles?
Thanks for posting the review, btw.

I went to a Don Henley benefit show in Phoenix back in March of '97, as Stevie was a special guest. During his set, people starting screaming "Stevie" after every song and he got really irritated. Can't say I really blame him. So when he introduced her, he said something like "here's what you came to hear."
Perhaps the same thing is going on here. He is realizing that the majority of people are coming to see Stevie and it's bugging him. Add to that the fact that he's already demonstrated that he's not into the tour, as he went on record saying he would scrap it to go in the recording studio with the Eagles.

C'mon, silly. All of Stevie's old boyfriends, be it Lindey or Don, are just insanely jealous of her and everything she does. Her very presence makes their skin crawl because she's just so beloved, and they've still not gotten over her. If she ever appears reserved onstage, it's their fault. If she wears nothing but Blackdress, it's their fault. Decades after the fact, it's all true. And Don's not going to let her sing on his songs any more, that insecure ass.

Well, your snark notwithstanding, It actually seems that Don is acting like a jealous titmonkey, and turning in bad performances because of it. It's not a conspiracy theory, it's based on what people are witnessing about his attitude towards Stevie and his performance overall. Are these performances any different from ones he's given in the past? Not that I can really tell, he's always been a bit boring and reserved. Is he supposed to introduce Miss Thing every time she comes onstage, even though she quite obviously shares half of the bloody bill and her presence is no shocker? I think not, but I suppose it's up to interpretation. Was he snubbing her by not holding her hand at this one show? Pfffft, I highly doubt it. Is it just speculation that he's jealous? Yes, it is. This is the guy that performs at her benefit concerts and invites her to perform at his benefit concerts. He's made surprise appearances at her solo shows over the years and the two seem to be truly good friends (why, I'll never know, especially after that GQ article; Miss Thing must be a very forgiving person). I highly, highly doubt that he's brimming with jealously of her on this current ten-date tour, but that's just me.

Newsflash! They guys's an a$$. He bailed out of this tour months ago. Did anyone else including Stevie really think he was going to be Mr. Personality for these few shows he is doing? No skin off her nose to play off of his indifference and lack of enthusiasm to her advantage. If I were her I'd have kicked his arrogant ass year's ago. I don't know why she's still friends with him when he's done a lot of things to insult her publicly over the years, but Stevie knows how to keep friends in high places she might need sometime down the road. Girfriend's a pro. Go for it, Stevie! Show Don up for the tool he is. Of course, she's one too. She just operates with a more subtle approach. She always knows how to play these arrogant men and their attitudes to her advantage. What a woman!

I don't think Lindsey or Don are jealous, but if you have a rock 'n roll icon in her full splendor it's difficult for anybody to compete. In Lindsey's case she tries to hold back to let him more space and that's a pity. He's a grown up and doesn't need anybody to look after him, I think. With Don she seems more relaxed, there isn't that kind of full tension dynamic, that's exciting, but has to be also quite difficult to manage, sometimes.

I think a lot of what people are seeing as "jealousy" on this Don-Stevie tour is more nervousness than anything else. Neither of them have done this before with each other, so it must be kind of rough when you start out, not having established much of a chemistry or knowing what will make it seem like you're stepping on the other performer's shoes.

Um, not to be rude, but Lindsey very obviously was jealous of her at some points. I'm not saying he should've been, but he was. But, I know you will ignore any evidence that shows that, so, have fun. :wavey:

I think a lot of what people are seeing as "jealousy" on this Don-Stevie tour is more nervousness than anything else. Neither of them have done this before with each other, so it must be kind of rough when you start out, not having established much of a chemistry or knowing what will make it seem like you're stepping on the other performer's shoes.
I agree, and honestly I think it's already going pretty well. They're very different as performers but the contrast could fill the stage in a very appealing way. Don just has to loosen up a bit.

People always mention "jealousy" when talking about Stevie's friction with some of the men she's performed with. Ok, so some of her male counterparts don't always fawn over her the way she or her fans would like. When anyone comes off as less than enthused around her, why do her fans immediately assume friction or indifference with another performer to be due to their burning jealousy of her talent or popularity? I'm not saying it isn't so. Couldn't be because she's always saying or implying others are jealous of her emense talent and star power? Nah. Stevie isn't presumptuous to think or imply such a thing. She's too gracious a person to ever do that. :D

So....Don is jealous because there is a stipulation that photographers are not allowed to take photos of the 2 of them on stage? Now I think I have heard it all
It's much more likely that Don (I can't speak about Stevie...I don't follow her) doesn't want photographic fodder for tabloid magazines out there. Imagine a photo of them slow-dancing and the headline that would appear in the STAR.
Don is an incredibly giving and humble guy. While he does stand up for himself when the occaision warrents it, it's nearly impossible to hear him muttering...
Must....control...photographers....Stevie.....looks....good.....
in a manaical way.
Apparently, Don has been incredibly gracious already...allowing Stevie her choice of performance order and other things she's asked for. That doesn't sound like someone acting out of jealousy.
Just the two cents from this side of things.

Are you saying Stevie is going around implying everyone is jealous of her? I haven't really heard her say that, except for a few stories that have been related about Lindsey's behavior a few times over the years. And friction may imply jealousy. I think most of whoever Stevie worked with were not jealous of her, but I think some people were. Maybe not constantly, but definitely jealous, none the less. But, whatever, maybe someone who agrees with you will understand your post better? :wavey:

Has it necessary to be a guilt fest? By the way, besides the words, the suspects, the existing or non-existing hidden jealousies, the "what if's.. ", ''he/she should..." only the stage gives the measure of an unforgettable performer and that's what the public remembers, looks for and respects.

I didn't know what to think about this tour before it started but now I'm really glad they had this idea. The way they sing together gongs like Hotel California, New York Minute or Circle Dance is haunting, IMO. I wasn't crazy about Don Henley before 'Two Voices', but now I respect him as a performer and his music more. :)

The article never said which artist is behind the ban on pictures of the two of them.
I'd say that it's just as likely -- if not more--that it is Stevie's idea. Henley comes across as gruff, but he doesn't seem like someone who really cares about his public image.
Then we have Stevie--someone who canned her Stand Back video because she thought she was fat, ridiculously and obviously redid her closeups for Red Rocks and Tango In The Night, and clearly made sure that the majority of closeups from Live in Boston are from her neck up.
I'm not sure what the reasoning would be, but my money is on Stevie.

I'm not sure what the reasoning would be, but my money is on Stevie. The AP Archives have more than a dozen professionally-shot pics of Stevie from the 'Say You Will' tour, and professional photographers were also allowed to take photos in Vegas. So I doubt she'd suddenly put a ban on them... especially when she seems to be feeling really good about herself.
But I'm not saying it's Don's "fault" either. Perhaps it's just a mutual agreement they came to, for a reason not even related to vanity.

According to Glenn Frey, we've seen the Eagles 700 times. In reality it's more like 70. Don is usually very quiet during Eagles shows because Eagles shows are about the band, not him. Glenn is the band spokesperson and emcee so he does all the talking and Don does very little.
At solo shows, though, he is a different person. He's funny. He's chatty. He tells stories. He talks to the audience. We haven't seen Don and Stevie yet so we're reserving judgement, but it sounds like he's off a little bit or he's letting her have the spotlight because he's a gentleman.
As for photos.....when the tickets say "no cameras" Don fully expects there won't be any cameras in the audience. He's not a big fan of having flashes go off in his face all night. He says it hurts his eyes.

Don Henley is nothing if not a gentleman.
When asked in what order he and ``Two Voices'' tourmate Stevie Nicks would perform at their co-headlining show at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield tonight, Henley laughs.
``I'm going to go first every night,'' he says, ``because there are certain things that she has to have.''
Those include, but are not limited to, special lighting, time for costume changes and the proper performing temperature.
``I'm just a guy,'' Henley says. ``Guys don't mind sweating. I'm just going to go first and that will make my life a lot simpler.''
----------------------------------------------------
I think being a true "gentleman" would be to simply say that he is going first without laughing and talking about Stevie's special needs and saying that he just wants to make his life simpler.
A gentleman doesn't call attention to himself or make a big deal when doing something gracious.

BECAUSE.. I'm really loving the songs that I have from this tour so far. My latest CD burn includes a mix of the cuts from the Philly and Holmdel shows that have surfaced. and to me, Don sounds pretty good... of course I think Stevie rules, because she's my favorite, but I've always loved Don's voice and it doesn't disappoint me on what I've heard so far.
I'm sure Stevie has her Diva moments, but all I can truly say is that I feel blessed that my favorite songwriter is still around singing to her fans. Not all music fans are as lucky. She's still my girl!

If you don't like Don Henley, it's simple don't go to a double bill in which he is a part of...if you hate him that much, and that's certainly your choice--by all means don't give him your hard earned money, and some of you aren't--but some are..

Don usually does introduce his band. It's kind of weird that he isn't. I don't know if he just feels weird doing it half way through the show of if he's trying to save his voice (he has been having problems with it) by doing as little talking as possible. It's not like him to not introduce the band.

I agree with all of this. Why is everyone assuming Don is a butt-reaming asshole? So, he's quiet on stage, he's not touchy-feely, he doesn't want his picture taken, he keeps his eyes closed. He's got his quirks. So does Stevie. It sounds like he's been putting on a good show. That's the main thing. And, maybe he's not comfortable with Stevie hugging all up on him. They haven't had this on-going friendship from what I gather over the years, so maybe it makes him uncomfortable. They did have a past. He just sounds reserved and not a touchy-feely kind of guy. Well said. I, however, do think Don is an ass - but certainly not an asshole (he's a man. aren't we all asses? ). I also think he's an amazing artist who is incredibly talented. The boots I've heard from the shows with Stevie are great, they sound so good on stage together, and since I live in Colorado, I too really hope that they do this tour again next year, and play in the western US. Wait.....do I want Stevie on the road with Don next year, or do I want her in the studio? Now I'm uncertain. If the lady could manage to pull an album out of her ass during the fall and winter of this year (yeah, right) I'd really like them to tour next summer. Otherwise, I'd hope she'd say 'bye bye, Don, I have an album to record'.
God, her and Don should do an album of Motown tunes. That would be nice.

Well, so far I am the first person to post in this topic who has just gotten back from the Tweeter Center Performance.
There was quite a bit of hugging and twiriling between them tonight, though Don really didn't talk much.
It was pretty obvious that most of the audience was there to see Stevie--everyone went nuts every time she came on or sang.
Not to say people didn't like Don--There was applause and standing for stuff like Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane, etc. (his more popular songs).
Seeing Stevie for the first time was amazing. What a cool experience! And the songs just keep evolving--it's quite different than what I've heard on earlier tour boots/CDs/DVDs. Very Live In Boston + Solo Stevie--it's the best way I can describe it.
I'm hoping that someone did a boot. ;)
BTW, I did notice some camera flashes going off in the audience in the front sections...
I also kinda wish there were projections so you could see their faces. I was sitting in Section 4 Row J, which wasn't too bad, but kinda squinty.

I'm sure Don knows he cannot compete with La Nicks in the realm of charisma and stage presence so I can't imagine he'd bother being jealous after knowing her for 30 years. Some people have a star aura and some do not. This thread reminds me of Rolling Stone article about Kenny Loggins in 1978 in which La Nicks joined him to sing WICYF."A swirl of white chiffon and photographers rush the aisles. The loudest applause of the evening is heard as Stevie Nick takes the stage and the handsome Californian seems almost invisible in her presence" Now Loggins IMO is a significantly more animated performer than Henley so I can imagine the contrast between he and Nicks. But jealous? I doubt it.

I just love Led Zep. and a friend of mine and I were just talking about that song and how the lyrics were all about the Vikings to wit:
Immigrant Song
(Page/Plant)
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

We then noted that "Valhalla" was like the Tolkienian city of Edoras, home of the Horse Lords, to wit:
Valhalla, Hall of the Slain, in Norse mythology is the hall presided over by Odin. This vast hall has five hundred and forty doors. The rafters are spears, the hall is roofed with shields and breast-plates litter the benches. A wolf guards the western door and an eagle hovers over it. It is here that the Valkyries, Odin's messengers and spirits of war, bring half of the heroes that died on the battle fields (the rest go to Freya's hall Folkvang). These heroes, the Einherjar, are prepared in Valhalla for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok. When the battle commences, eight hundred warriors will march shoulder to shoulder out of each door.
Old Norse: Valhöll

I then noted that Tolkien sampled from Viking myth as well as others, to wit:
Midgard
In Norse myth, the defensive fortress which the gods build about the middle portion of the earth allotted to men in order to protect mankind from the giants. Midgard ("middle world") is on the same level as Nidavellir (land of the dwarfs), Svartalfheim (land of the dark elves/dwarfs) and Jotunheim (the land of the giants).
Old Norse: Midgardr
which sounds a lot like Middle Earth!!!!!!

Thanks for the recap but I'm an Old Norse scholar!! :wavey::laugh::laugh: So anyway, I'm familiar....and yes, Tolkien totally stole from Norse Mythology which is why I love LOR. And that elvish language? Sounds like a mix of gaelic and old norse to me .
With all the mythology embedded in that song, I should have known you'd be into it. Good choice for a quote.
