That was awesome, David.
"The Victorians delicately referred to her as "La Grande Horizontele."
"Homicidal temper; carried a whip. One of the most outrageous women of her time."
"So did her temper. When a man annoyed her, she typically would slash him across the face with the whip she always carried. On one occasion when a lover proved to be disappointing, she fired her pistol at the luckless romeo as he dodged ricocheting bullets while escaping down the street with his pants around his knees. But, on first meeting, she was charming, very charming"
Nice.

John Locke
John Locke (b. 1632, d. 1704) was a British philosopher, Oxford academic and medical researcher, whose association with Anthony Ashley Cooper (later the First Earl of Shaftesbury) led him to become successively a government official charged with collecting information about trade and colonies, economic writer, opposition political activist, and finally a revolutionary whose cause ultimately triumphed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Much of Locke's work is characterized by opposition to authoritarianism. This opposition is both on the level of the individual person and on the level of institutions such as government and church. For the individual, Locke wants each of us to use reason to search after truth rather than simply accept the opinion of authorities or be subject to superstition. He wants us to proportion assent to propositions to the evidence for them. On the level of institutions it becomes important to distinguish the legitimate from the illegitimate functions of institutions and to make the corresponding distinction for the uses of force by these institutions. The positive side of Locke's anti-authoritarianism is that he believes that using reason to try to grasp the truth, and determining the legitimate functions of institutions will optimize human flourishing for the individual and society both in respect to its material and spiritual welfare. This in turn, amounts to following natural law and the fulfillment of the divine purpose for humanity. Locke's monumental An Essay Concerning Human Understanding concerns itself with determining the limits of human understanding in respect to God, the self, natural kinds and artifacts, as well as a variety of different kinds of ideas. It thus tells us in some detail what one can legitimately claim to know and what one cannot. Locke also wrote a variety of important political, religious and educational works including the Two Treatises of Civil Government, the Letters Concerning Toleration, The Reasonableness of Christianity and Some Thoughts Concerning Education.

I think David should explain his choices!
I'd like to know mine anyway...For yours, I will admit I got the idea more from Josef von Sternberg's magnificent expressionist classic "The Scarlet Empress" than from the historical Catherine. Catherine, played by Marlene Dietrich, started as an innocent young girl doomed to "greatness" & to fulfill her role at court, but through sheer power of personality & razor-sharp intelligence, as well as awesome physical beauty (which may or may not be true about you), came to dominate the court of Old Russia, an overwhelmingly male-dominated world (mostly in the form of priests & nobility).
Like Dietrich, I see you riding triumphantly to victory on your prophetic white horse through the monstrous halls of the palace, with both glory & doom in your future if you stumble.

For yours, I will admit I got the idea more from Josef von Sternberg's magnificent expressionist classic "The Scarlet Empress" than from the historical Catherine.
Wow. Thank you.

But I'm either Edmund Wilson or John Simon. But if someone said I was Bernard De Voto or Jacques Barzun, that would be just fine too, even though I'm very different from Jacques.

Margaret Bourke-White contributed many things to the world of photography. She was a woman, doing a man's job, in a man's world, from the foundries of Cleveland to the battlefields in World War II. She was an original staff photographer for two of the most prominent magazines of her day, Fortune and Life. She led a life full of adventure, pioneering a new art form: photojournalism. Margaret Bourke-White was, and still is, one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century.

McEnroe is an ass. I don't know why Patty Smyth is married to him. Right after Tatum's book was released, I watched her on Oprah and Larry King. I truly don't think she's lying in what she says went on and I hope she gets herself totally cleaned up. She was in an episode of Sex and the City not that long ago and was pretty amusing. She's still gorgeous and she's still a good actress. Hopefully people won't find her difficult to work with and she'll get things turned around for herself.

She was doomed from the start with a family like that. Her brother coming out after the book and saying she's a liar--she has no one--it's sad. What makes it even worse is McEnroe running her down in front of their kids.

Amber as Theda Bara?
<img src="http://silentladies.com/Bara/Bara30.jpg">
Theda Bara made more than 40 feature films between 1914 and 1926 of which complete prints of only three still exist. She made her Broadway debut in "The Devil" (1908), and her film debut was a bit part in "The Stain" (1914), directed by Frank Powell for Pathé Frères. A large portion of her films are now lost, to the regret of later generations of fans.
Bara was a sex symbol of the era, and in a number of her films appeared in risqué transparent costumes that left little to the imagination. Such outfits were banned from Hollywood films after the Hays Code went into effect a few years later, which may have been a factor in declining interest in her films, which could no longer be commercially shown in the United States. At the height of her fame, however, her vamp image was notorious enough be refered to in various popular songs of the day. A line in "Red-Hot Hannah" said "I know things that Theda Bara's just startin' to learn - make my dresses from asbestos, I'm liable to burn...." "Rebecca Came Back From Mecca" contains the lyrics "She's as bold as Theda Bara; Theda's bare but Becky's bare-er".
Note: The word "vamp" was apparently created to describe Theda Bara.
--------------------------
So, what do you all think?
I love Theda Bara. She was cool. Her and Clara Bow. :)

I prefer either, But the image of Mark Twain made me think of the scene in "Robin Hood:Men in Tights" where Robin of Locksley is shooting in an archery contest wearing a Mark Twain mask
Mark Twain-"Throughout his career, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) published more than 30 books, hundreds of short stories and essays and gave lecture tours around the world. By the end of his life in 1910, Clemens had become known as the quintessential American author having captured in his works the spirit, character and even dialect of a diverse nation. His writing also served to voice his running commentary on American society. Thinly veiled behind the mask of humor and satire, Clemens' writing often critiqued social morals, politics and human nature, making his literature a unique reflection of the American experience in the latter part of the nineteenth century."

madformac -- Ivor Novello
I knew I should have stayed out of this thread.......
IVOR NOVELLO
Welsh actor, composer, songwriter and dramatist. Born in Cardiff and educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford where he was a chorister....
By customarily taking the non-singing lead in his own shows, he built a great following with the female audience, despite, in his private life, he was homosexual, often very openly. Novello's shows helped fill London's theatre during World War II whilst he continued to produce new ones, among them Arc de Triomphe and Gay's the Word.
