Well..I read all thirty pages of the thread and I saw Paula was asking a few questions that did not get answered there. If they have been answered elsewhere, I do apologize.
I was really skeptical before going to this show about seeing Don etc. I did not know his first song at all but Witchy Woman was cool. Don still sounds awesome but he doesn't smile much or interact with the crowd at ALL.Stevie came out during HC and the place erupted and I actually felt bad for Don. Everyone jumped up and screamed for Stevie...she got way more attention. She sang verses on all three of the songs she did with Don and I LOVED all three of the songs she did with him...especially the last one..LWE?
Stevie looked drop dead gorgeous. STUNNING. The pants were skin tight with diamond like rhinestones down the sides and she had on boots and a long black, billowy top. Her hair had a slight wave to it, it was NOT crimped but man, she was beautiful. She has lost a **** load of weight and her legs were showing at several points in the show..they were not covered up like during SYW. She was animated and happy and very flirty with Don.
After Don's set...they tore down his equipment and the stage revolved around..well part of it, where the drums were and new drums were set up for Paxson. Taku's stuff was then set up too. There was Vegas footage but also NEW stuff, various drawings during Rhiannon and some cool stuff during GDW. Don sang verses on GDW and SDMHA....Stevie did not sing the "rulers make bad lovers" line...Don did and it was sort of odd. I really didnt like it but hey, thats me. At the end of GDW..she wrapped her arms around him and they slow danced...yikes...very slowing. Don was attentive to Stvie, hugging her, kissing her cheek but he also seemed sort of pissed a few times. At the equipment, guitars, level of his mic..etc. He was dressed in all black when he first came out, sort of like black dress pants and a black shirt with a coat over it. Sort of a cowboy shirt?
The place was pretty full and the crowd was enthused for both. I LOVED CD and Stevie introduced it by saying she loved the song and wanted to do it. The lyrics are compelling and chosen for a reason, IMHO. She could have picked any number of songs to cover, yet chose one like this. I thought the song was soo sad but she sounded GREAT. If I remember correctly Stevie sang most of the verses and Don did the chorus with her. I know she sang the bulk of the song cause I was listening to the words with her voice and I definately got her "message".
Don sang on SDMHA too and they encored with L and L. I saw him ask Stevie.."one more?" to which she shook her head yes. That is when they did the Petty cover/Bryds song. Sharonn and Jana were confused because Don walked off without bowing.
Random thoughts..
Stevie hula danced, ala Rumours footage..during OTR and I almost fell over. It was adorable and she did it several times.
She high kicked like the TISL photo at the end of SB...her leg went totally above her head!
She wore a white skirt, from Vegas, during Edge and took off the leg warmers so we could see her LEGS!! She had on the ankle stilettos with sheer black tights and she kept holding her skirt, shaking it, during the song so you could see her legs from mid thigh down. Quite a change from SYW subdued Stevie.
She seemed thrilled to be there and smiled alot.
She had the new headset..with the double ear that she had in Vegas.
Her harmonies with Don were spot on and her voice was in top form although on BaTB she did not go as all out as she did in Vegas. I am sure she needs to pace herself vocally!
Rhiannon was particularly good as was the CD song. The candelabra was on the piano but not the shawl. The piano player was a new guy, I cannot remember his name but he did GREAT. Al Ortiz sang on BaTB and according to Marissa handled Lori's parts nicely. The backsassers were directly in front of us and Jana toned down the screaming a bit. She sang more of the last song with Don than Sharon did.
A Wachovia employee told us that Stevie was sick before the show but damned it I could tell. He said that Stevie had a stomach virus but I would predict it was nerves because she was incredible for the whole entire show. Energetic, outgoing, animated.
Scott Rinkov was there, hanging out on the stage before she show with Cory.
For the encores, Don came out in the same black pants but a different black shirt that had some red designs sewn thoughout. (For L and M)
I did not notice his shoes but he looked good. I know you girls are gonna dye when you see Stevie in her platform Reeblecks with the rhinestones. NO LAUGHING allowed. lol
He had some stubble and hardly interacted with the audience at all. We had front row and he sings almost all the time with his eyes closed. Even when Stevie was singing directly to him, he was singing with closed eyes, not looking back at her.
She did try to hand him her "lace" at the end of L and L but he ignored it.
There were mostly Stevie fans around me in the crowd but I also talked to several Don fans, two women in particular told me they were leaving after his set! I was shocked and told them to stay, that Don would prolly be encoring with her too.
The Edge rush was minimal as there was a barricade. Stevie was supposed to just wave but when she leaned down the crowd surged forward and knocked the entire barricade over. Marcus was way down at the other end of the stage and he was yelling into his walkie talkie.."what the hell is she doing...DAMMIT" and he proceeded to RUN down to her, knocking over an usher in the process. I do think the barricade was something the band did and Marcus did not seem to think Stevie was doing handshakes. She did but pretty minimally.
I cannot stress enough how gorgeous Stevie looked. She was radiant, along the lines of Storytellers. She seemed over the moon throughout the entire show and I have never seen her dance and move so much other than the Vegas show on Wed night. She was very sexy and confident and I love her when she is that way.
I am shocked that people (only a couple) are complaining about her cover choices. IMHO..the song was chosen very specifically because the lyrics are meaningful to Stevie. She is only going to put her all into a song when she feels inspired by it and I would much rather have an inspired, emotionally invested Stevie on a cover that is out of the norm than a boring, sedate, solemn Stevie on a song she is not comfortable singing. Or one that does not touch Stevie's heart. The lyrics to the Raitt song are important to Stevie, according to her own introduction and she WANTED to sing it. Stevie rarely ventures out of her comfort zone so to see her try new things and sing verses on HC, NYM and LWE was so refreshing. She really made LWE, IMHO.
It would make an interesting discussion to compare and contrast relatively subdued SYW, TISL Stevie to Vegas/Two Voices/Gold Dust Stevie. I "know" many people will blame LB but he was not around during TISL and she was pretty blah at alot of shows. I cannot get over her level of energy and enthusiasm last night..oh and she smiled way more than I have ever seen her.
*another random thought
I thought her chemistry with Don was refreshing but also sort of contrived. Stevie can be very flirty and she seemed to be enjoying "playing" around with him. I didn't feel that much reciprocation from Don, except when they slow danced. He also told her after NYM that she did "incredible" and said "great job" with a small smile. Don does not smile much.
Last thing. The drummer from Don's band walked directly up to me and Marissa and handed us his drumstick. The barrier in front of the stage prevented me from being able to fully reach it but he obviously was attempting to hand the stick to Riss and I. Well, when we could not reach it, it dropped to the floor and the older lady next to Riss grabbed it. Her husband was like "uh he was handing it to them". She ignored him and he said it again "that is not right..he was handing that to them specifically" but she kept it!
Not happy about that but whatever..what comes around goes around. She then showed it to us. It said Eagles Tour 2005. Bitch.
Cameras were allowed.
Security was tight and Naziish during Edge. They made EVERYONE who did not have front row stay in or go back to their seats. If you argued, they tossed you out. They told me that Don's security had told them to keep people behind the barriers. (the head of security told me that)
