Christian Group Urges Ford Boycott

Tuesday, May 31, 2005

DETROIT — A conservative Christian group launched a boycott against Ford Motor Co. (F) Tuesday, saying the second-largest U.S. automaker has given thousands of dollars to gay rights groups, offers benefits to same-sex couples and actively recruits gay employees.

"From redefining family to include homosexual marriage, to giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to support homosexual groups and their agenda, to forcing managers to attend diversity training on how to promote the acceptance of homosexuality... Ford leads the way," American Family Association (search) chairman Donald Wildmon said in a statement.

Ford responded that it respects its customers and employees.

"Ford values all people, regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and cultural or physical differences," Ford vice president of human resources Joe Laymon said.

General Motors Corp. (GM) and Chrysler Corp. also provide benefits for same-sex partners.

Tupelo, Miss.-based AFA said it e-mailed an announcement about the Ford boycott to 2.2 million supporters. AFA special projects director Randy Sharp said nearly 55,000 people had signed a pledge supporting the boycott by Tuesday afternoon.

Ford was the only automaker among the 56 companies that got the highest rating last year from the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group. Companies are rated on several factors, including whether they offer benefits to gay partners, donate to gay rights groups and market their products to gays.

Sharp said he is upset by Ford's marketing tactics in gay-oriented publications, including offering to donate $1,000 to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (search) for every Jaguar or Land Rover sold.

"Ford is willing to do something they have refused to do for any other group," Sharp said.

Ford spokesman Oscar Suris said the company donated $77.9 million to a wide variety of groups last year. The majority — $39.6 million — went to education, he said. A much smaller percentage went to community organizations for gays, Hispanics, blacks, Asians and other groups.

The AFA recently ended a nine-year boycott of The Walt Disney Co. over Disney's decision to extend benefits to same-sex couples and promote gay-related events at its theme parks. The boycott appeared to have little effect, since Disney reported higher earnings and increased theme park attendance during that time.

Then again, I suppose it is their right to boycott if people on the other side can also boycott  and poor Disney seems to be reeling from it

they run on methane :xoxo:

I had a Ford Explorer. Despite the exploding tires and the propensity to roll over  - it was a good car. It actually was a work horse and had a car load of Mexican painters not essentially taken off the passenger side, which lead to a faulty repair, which lead to problems two years later, which lead to no more Ford

Yeah, I'm a Ford girl...but now I can be proud of it!

I've never had a problem with them. My favorite car was my '87 Thunderbird with the V-8 in it. SWEET!

My Dad's last F150 lasted 17 years and his new one is absolutely gorgeous. Everything is ergonomically designed and there are little cubbies for storage everywhere.

I have never owned a Ford. I drive a Volvo, which was purchased by Ford a couple of years ago. So take that, Christofascists!

I drive a Toyota Matrix. But, it's not a rice-burner. It's a donut burner. It was made in Cambridge, Ontario. But hey, Ontario has legalized same-sex marriage, so I suppose said group of Bible-thumping retards would have an issue with my car, too. To which I say, that while I'm NOT gay, my car is ABSOULTELY FAB-U-LOUS!

You know, Ford was just in the news recently because of a new program they're instituting.

They're purchasing wild mustangs from the BLM and putting them up for adoption at no cost to the new owners, but under written contract that the horses will never go to slaughter.

Gee what a terrible company. Promoting understanding and saving horses! This is horrifying! Come on all... it's time to write some letters and take up picket signs!

P.S.
More than half of horses rounded up and auctioned off by the BLM last year ended up in the hands of "killer buyers" and their lives ended in slaughterhouses. Because these buyers are paid by the slaughterhouses by the pound, they often seek out the healthiest animals at the auction because they weigh more than the lame or sick ones.
