i'm in the mood to buy one and would like some input.

i would prefer the Dell as there is no way in hell i'm using iTunes.

so here's the thing: i read through the online user guide and it mentions that you cannot load pirated music. what is considered pirated music? i've got all of my CDs uploaded onto my computer, can i load those files? can i load the 5 gigs of stevie boots? what (if any) problems have you had with the Dell DJ? i use Windows Media Player, do i have to convert files or push them through a different program?

all raves/bashes welcome...

Just get a stupid ipod! Is it really worth the risk? :wavey: Oh, please, no, you don't have to thank me for the immense help I've been.

I have an Ipod 20 and love it. and it most certainly plays my FM boots, but you have to download the Ipod software. I just copied them over there. I have never had any problems with my other stuff like my CD's, which I loaded one at a time. I looked at the Dell, but thought the Ipod was cooler.

I purchased an iPod mini back in March and I love it (and it's BLUE so that's also exciting to me). It's only 4GB (1000 songs) but it does the job and it's perfect for what I was looking for. iTunes really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Thus far I haven't had too many problems. My only issue has been converting some of the songs I took from my CD's (CD's that had been burned) which really wasn't a huge problem either. You can't go wrong with either one, IMO. My iPod came with all of the software I needed so no download was necessary unless there is an actual iTunes upgrade.

So, Mariel, even though you said you didn't want an ipod, you will probably get 20 or so more responses about how great ipods are!!!! They're so easy! they're so fun!!!

so if i have, let's say 15 gigs that i want to push to an ipod, how long does that take to get through itunes? all of the files are sitting there in .mp3 and .wav, does it convert those files or make copies? i think i'd die if it changed all of my files and then i had to use itunes as my media player.

An iPod won't play wav files, you'll have to convert them but it will play MP3s. I've never had any problems with the stuff I've downloaded. You can put them on your iPod and they'll remain MP3s.

I have a 20GB iPod but wish I bought the 40GB one now, because mine is full and I have keep taking off stuff to put on the new albums I buy :(

oh and also, does it go by number of songs or size of files? i upload my disks at super low bitrates to save space on my hard drive and one album usually takes up less than 10MB. can i cram it, or does it only allow a certain number?

ps, thanks guys!

What's the problem with iTunes? I love it. I like the AAC format, I love the way the library's set up, and it makes creating playlists, burning CDs, and importing songs the easiest I've seen.

I have a 40GB touch wheel iPod. It's my baby. I have a friend with the pocket DJ, and I think it's lame.

I totally agree  It's much easier than Windows Media IMO

I wish I had a 40GB iPod. Not that I don't love my current iPod...

*STABS WINDOWS MEDIA*

I love how easy it is to set up my playlists and keep things organized with iTunes. Windows Media? the devil. I honestly cannot stand it.

I have a 20GB Dell Pocket DJ and was able to put all my bootlet crap on it. I think the DJ is easier to use and it has a voice recording option along with an sleep timer, time and calendar marked with today's date. Dell has really good customer service too and they have this thing called a DJ explorer that you can download and transfer all your songs from your DJ to any computer. That way if you stay at somebody's house or you want to put your music on a different computer then you can just copy it with the explorer.

what software do you use to upload the songs?

and i happen to love windows media player. i've got the controls on my keyboard and can use it without messing with what i've got on screen. and i am very resistant to change. i was a winamp girl for like, six years until i got my new computer and switched to windows media.

anyone have the HP ipod? what's the difference?

I have a 40G iPod and trust me it is SO simple to use and iTunes is great too..I especially love paying like nine bucks for CDs and you can search and buy late at night when you local records shops are closed, you can find lots of old great CDs and the radio player on iTunes is worth it alone, they've got some great stations. You'll love it.

I love my ipod... so far I haven't had any trouble uploading any of my music from CDs, mp3s, etc. You have to use the itunes software but it's not a big deal... it's actually easier to use than the other music/media software I have on my computer.

Woo hoo, somebody else here has a Dell DJ. I use musicmatch which is free to upload my songs or the Dell DJ Explorer which you can get on the dell support site as a free download once you buy the DJ. I think it is faster to use the explorer because you just open the file where the songs are and drag them over to the explorer. You can also use the dj as a hard drive which is great.
