I was just listening to an excerpt from the Pres's speech in which he defended the treatment of prisoners at Guantanomo, saying we have to realize that these are people who "disassemble' -- then he paused and I wondered what could possbly follow--bombs, societies, security measures? --then he said "that means they don't tell the truth."

I would not call it that because it is far more humane - do I have to haul out gulag stories like I did when you compared W to Hitler - ya know you are prone to embellishing and exaggerating :wavey:
But, back to the point, this is classic Rove/Cheney deny deny deny because most of America will believe it because they hate all Arabs. Sad - very true.

Well, here is a def of a Russian gulag from http://www.answers.com/topic/gulag :
Gulag, system of forced-labor prison camps in the USSR, from the Russian acronym [GULag] for the Main Directorate of Corrective Labor Camps, a department of the Soviet secret police (originally the Cheka; subsequently the GPU, OGPU, NKVD, MVD, and finally the KGB). The Gulag was first established under Vladimir Lenin during the early Bolshevik years (c.1920). The vast penal network, which ultimately included 476 camp complexes, functioned throughout Russia, many in the wastes of Siberia and the Soviet Far East. The system reached its peak after 1928 under Joseph Stalin, who used it to maintain the Soviet state by keeping its populace in a state of terror. Gulag deaths of both political prisoners and common criminals from overwork, starvation, and other forms of maltreatment are estimated to have been in the millions during Stalin's years in power.
Perhaps the best known of the Gulag camp complexes was Kolyma, an area in the Far East about six times the size of France that contained more than 100 camps. About three million are thought to have died there from its establishment in 1931 to 1953, the year of Stalin's death. The Gulag scheme was adapted into the infamous concentration camp system used during World War II, especially as Nazi death factories. The Soviet system was publicized in the writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, particularly in his book The Gulag Archipelago (1973, tr. 1974). Millions were released from the Gulag under Nikita Khrushchev, and the system was finally abolished by Mikhail Gorbachev.
Bibliography
See A. Shifrin, The First Guidebook to Prisons and Concentration Camps of the Soviet Union (tr. 1980), A. Applebaum, Gulag: A History (2003).
___________________________________________________________
The chief difference is in this sentence Gulag deaths of both political prisoners and common criminals from overwork, starvation, and other forms of maltreatment are estimated to have been in the millions during Stalin's years in power. Last I checked, that was not happening in any way at Gitmo, which we have one of compared to the system of hundreds in Russia. Thus, Gitmo is FAR from a Russian Gulag.
Here are some more articles:
http://www.townhall.com/bookclub/applebaum.html
http://www.orwelltoday.com/gulagbook.shtml
http://www.paulmitchinson.com/gulag.html
To be clear - I think what is happening at Gitmo is horrible. I think the US should be the "bigger party" and grant all of these people the rights the Geneva Convention grants enemy soldiers captured in battle, though many if not most of those captured do not qualify for that status as it is defined in the Geneva Convention because they were not fighting in a uniform, under the color of a state, etc., as required by the express language of the Geneva Convention. So, please do not mistake my saying that what goes on at Gitmo is not as severe as what happened in a Russian Gulag as saying I approve of Gitmo in any way.
I hope that helped.
In the end, I think it does people no good to make such patently false comparisons because to do so belies the credibility of any serious argument and shows the side making the argument is interested only in tading insults instead of sticking to the facts, which are really all that interest me in such debates.

But I see your point that assumptions are worth far less than facts, and I'm guessing that was an assumption on her part.

Oh, it does not always do that. Connotative comparisons are what bring the English language alive!!! I wouldn't recommend doing it in more serious academic writings, or whatever, but I think it often helps underscore the connotations of your point.

Yeah, I prefer the gym, but...you know...jumprope is hard on my ankles, I've been alternating it with hourlong bike rides into the berkeley hills (puff, puff, wheeze)
Heck yeah, I weight train. Two sets it probably fine, providing your weights are heavy enough. You need some fairly good resistance, none of that "just for toning" lightweight thing. At least that's what I've gleaned from my studies. Of course, 3 will burn that many more calories, but 2 is fine. You didn't look like you were prone to being bulky, to me, though, so if I were you I might go ahead and do three, when you feel like you can.

Thank you :D I tried on size 10 at the Gap too and they fit. So it's for real, and I've admitted my size, but a 10 seems tiny to me now, when it used to seem so big. Anyway, I didn't like the "distressed" jeans, they fit perfectly but the washed out parts accentuate everything a woman doesn't want to accentuate.
Thanks for the info on the sets. I figured too if I did 2 that I would be more likely to stick with my routine and less likely to quit, which has been going well. 3 just seems so overwhelming.

Wow, you looked smaller than that when I saw you, but that is great. I would think you were...an 8?
Anyway, just make sure your weights are heavy enough.

I wasn't poking fun. Just clarifying, cause now maybe people will think I don't really laugh when I use those, and I just couldn't stand that. *snick*
God, I hope people don't do that. Maybe you should delete that question....

and BTW - I fairly depicted what you said dear
No Jason you didnt! All I said was (again) W had an agenda before he ever got to the White House, that he had two main objectives: eliminate any traces of Clinton or his policies, and two: get Saddam Hussein. W had scores to settle.
THAT is what I said, not that W started the war in Iraq all by himself. (although I still think he was prepared to go into Iraq whether we had any other allies or not, and to the rest of the world he appeared to be acting unilaterally--with the exception of Britain) I never had any opinion on the UN being a partial cause and I dont believe I made any comment on your assertion that it was. Therefore, your previous statement years ago that the UN was partly to blame is NOT the reason I hate the UN now.

FYI: I dont engage in spin. If you'll go back and research the thread you are referring to, you'll see I repeated my original comments here. It amazes me that you would trot out the "spin" card when all I am doing is reminding you of what I DID say. You may have me confused with another poster? Alternatively, you may have indeed made the UN comments but I can tell you that at no time did I ever refute them because I have no info on the UN involvement in the Iraq war, nor did I ever.

all noses welcome - but isn't it ironic that you do not ask Mary "Can't you just admit you might be wrong" :wavey:
AND - the only reason I mentioned proof is she mentioned it first when she said "Jason, you have yet to prove anything, from your first comment to your last." So, once again, I think you should ask her that same question :wavey:

Getting close to what could happen in the US under the guise of the "Patriot Act".

It's a limitation of this medium that I can't express what I am trying to. Thanks for being so gracious. I'm trying to express how sometimes it is better to leave someone with "you are probably right" just because there's always that possibility and why hold onto something so tightly? That is all.

As an aside, Mary and I go waaaayyyyyyy back with this kind of bickering and believe me she can give as good as I can, even better at times (puff puff) In the end, Mary and I mostly agree on things big though - as do you and I - the biggest being W is to me a bumbling jerk and needs not to be our President.
