Sorry about your breakup!! :( Uh, I can't suggest anything cause I usually listen to Stevie/Mac when something like that happens. I hope you feel better soon, though. :xoxo:

Sorry to hear about that. :distress: When I'm sad and heartbroken, I tend to take a razor, make the wound deeper, and ground salt into it. So I'm not sure you want my suggestions....

Hopefully someone will rescue with some better sources of recovery...

Old school U2. Like Joshua Tree, etc.

Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, and Alanis always helped me... but then again, I'm a chick.

Coldplay-- "Warning Sign," is also good for a good cry.

Good luck, hon.

I'm really sorry.

About the songs, in similar situations (excluding FM and Stevie) I usually go:
-with big doses of Joni Mitchell (two favourites are Blue and Both Sides Now 2000 version)
- Alanis Morissette - Forgive Me love
-Bette Midler - Stay With Me
Outkast - Ms.Jackson
Charles Trenet - Que Reste-T-Il De Nos Amours
- Janet Jackson - Son of A Gun (for when I'm really angry :D )
Sly and the Family Stone - If You Want Me To Stay... one of my favourite energizers.

Good breakup songs that definitely show my age: ;)

I Will Survive- Gloria Gaynor
Against All Odds- Phil Collins
Please Don't Go- KC and the Sunshine Band

But my alltime winner goes to "Cry" by Faith Hill. I wasn't even IN a breakup when this song came out and it made me bawl.

Good luck to you- it WILL get better. xoxo

I listen to pretty much only sad music. So the songs I have are grievous ones! But here goes:

Emmylou Harris: Goodbye
Jann Arden: Cherry Popsicle
Tori Amos: Hey Jupiter, 1000 Oceans
Kate Bush: You're the One (holy ****! the lyrics are cheesy, but I bawl every time I hear this one!)
Indigo Girls: Ghost
Sinead O'Connor: Nothing Compares 2 U, What Does Not Belong To Me
Loreena McKennitt: Dante's Prayer (another WEEPER!!!)
Lucinda Williams: Lonely Girls, I Envy The Wind
Tanita Tikara: Lovers in the City, I Might be Crying (brace yourself for these ones too!)
Joni Mitchell: A Case of You

I'm a believer in wallowing in self pity! So, if you wish to follow my lead, listen to these ones!

Hey guys (& girls)

I just broke up with my girlfriend of nearly 3 years. I have been listening to High & Dry by Radiohead all afternoon....anyone got any songs they can suggest for me?Sorry to hear. I recommend the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields recording of "Five Variants of Dives & Lazarus" by Vaughan Williams.

Sorry to hear that. :( My pick would be:

Special - Garbage

I used to adore you
I couldn't control you
There was nothing that I wouldn't do
To keep myself around and close to you

Do you have an opinion?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know
But I've run out of patience
I couldn't care less

I used to amuse you
I knew that I'd lose you
Now you're here and begging for a chance
But there's no way in hell I'd take you back

Do you have an opinion?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know
But I've run out of patience
I've run out of comments
I'm tired of the violence
I couldn't care less

My pick would more than likely have to be Ben Folds Five - Song For The Dumped. Why? Because it can't help but to not make you smile at least for 2.5 seconds. Hang in there.

Wow. I'd never actually read the lyrics for that song until now. Those are great! I really relate myself. :distress:

I listen to pretty much only sad music. So the songs I have are grievous ones! But here goes:

Jann Arden: Cherry Popsicle

One of the most agonizingly sad songs evah. No one conveys agony better than Jann with the simplest words and her voice.

I'm a believer in wallowing in self pity!

Amen to that. When I broke up with a boyfriend I worked with (okay, when HE broke up with me) I used to listen to one specific song on my way to work, over and over and over again, that just perfectly defined my relationship with him and how I felt about him and how he didn't feel about me. By the time I'd get there, and have to see him, my heart would be so raw and bloody, having been ripped from my chest all over again, it couldn't possibly get any worse. And yet, it did. :distress:

(I'm a bit of a glutton for punishment, not to mention a tiny bit of a drama queen, in case that wasn't already apparent  ).

I just broke up with my boyfriend a week ago, so I feel your pain. I've been wallowing ever since, spending too much time posting here  and just feeling like sh*t. I like this song, although I haven't listened to it at all since we split. Around the same time was when I tapped into the 70s station and for some reason, it worked. I think possibly it's because it's music I have no association with and nothing we listened to together. I'd been with the same guy for a long time, so my memories are all with him, like concerts and music. It really helped me to listen to something from a different era that I am almost totally unfamiliar with. I asked my aunt (who is the coolest ever and was the one who introduced me to Stevie and went to Vegas with me  ) and she said Phil Collins "I Don't Care Anymore" or "In The Air Tonight" are really good ones if you're pissed off and need to vent (she's also a big Genesis/Phil Collins fan  ). Personally, I think he kinda sucks ass, but those songs are when he was still cool I guess.. So, my suggestion to escape it is to listen to something you can't associate with her and if you need to vent, try those two. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for all the songs guys. I'm going to be 26 this year...this is the third serious relationship I've had in my life and it sucks to see it go. I still love this girl, but we're at the point now where we've been together so long. And are we going to take the next step towards marriage or part company? Our goals and paths seem to be moving in opposite directions for some time now...and I've been avoiding it I guess. I wouldn't say the breakup is completely mutual though...I've never thought it was "so bad" that we needed to completely walk away from one another.

See, when I have guy troubles, I don't feel sad, per se, but I angst. According to Greg, this is because I am "a raging bitch, and a slut." But anyways.

I love listening to Garbage, No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn, Early Siouxsie, and some early Pretenders. Also, The Avengers and The Paybacks are helping me angst out right now. <3

Without hesitation I submit:

Harry Nilsson's "You're Breaking My Heart"

from The Son Of Schmilsson album:

You're breakin' my heart.
You're tearin' it apart.
So f*** you ...

i'm feeling more hurt and depressed now...my angst, if i could even call it that comes weeks later. I don't get too angry with the person...just angry that things didn't work out...angry at myself for not preventing it. I try and look at things bittersweetly rather than being p*ssed at someone, and then resenting all that time we spent together.

xxxmx...that song by the band is great. Thanks for that choice. I also heard "Wishing That" by Jann Arden that a friend recommended. Very sad. There are a few songs on that new Keane album that are fitting for me right now "We Might As Well be Strangers" and "She Has No Time."

I really like "That Particular Time" by Alanis because it talks about the cycles at the end of a relationship. And boy, have I been there before . . .

That Particular Time

my foundation was rocked my tried and true way to deal was to vanish
my departures were old I stood in the room shaking in my boots
at that particular time love had challenged me to stay
at that particular moment I knew not run away again
that particular month I was ready to investigate with you
at that particular time

we thought a break would be good for four months we sat and vacillated
we thought a small time apart would clear up the doubts that were abounding
at that particular time love encouraged me to wait
at that particular moment it helped me to be patient
that particular month we needed time to marinate in what "us" meant

I've always wanted for you what you've wanted for yourself
and yet I wanted to save us high water or hell
and I kept on ignoring the ambivalence you felt
and in the meantime I lost myself
in the meantime I lost myself
I'm sorry I lost myself….i am

you knew you needed more time time spent alone with no distraction
you felt you needed to fly solo and high to define what you wanted
at that particular love encouraged me to leave
at that particular moment I knew staying with you meant deserting me
that particular month was harder than you'd believe but I still left
at that particular time

Gosh, I don't know how you can not listen to FM for breakup. The Chain is playing right now, and of course, it is perfect. As are most of their other songs, considering they're about breaking up, and loving people, and everything not working out, and going your own way, and standing back, and stuff.

stevie and the mac were on constantly, it's actually harder to think of non-stevie/mac songs. Storms, Say Goodbye, and Planets were especially befitting of the situation. Then they gave way to Fall From Grace, Go Your Own Way, and the very elusive demo version of Smash My Tambo through Your Face.*

i also bury myself in dark classical music, very fabulous in that post-breakup depression pit.

*not an actual recording, but wouldn't that be so very awesome?

it sure would. Have you already written the lyrics, then?? If not, now would be a great time. :D
"So you say your jealous...weeeeeeelllll, you coulda had some uh this....But you were an ass.....so I smashed my tambo through your face, buttmunch....EaaaaaaattttmyTaaaaambooooo! Eat it!!!"
Heck, I couldn't even think of any non Stevie/Mac breakup songs. Except Total Eclipse...but that's so very lame. Plus, they're all so screamy, and we all like to scream when we are mad/sad, right?

What?! They're all breakup songs!!! I'm shocked...shocked! But, shmey, whatever works for you....I mean, it's fine, if you don't want to know the reason why love keeps right on walking on down the line. or if you don't want to be on the road to paradise, and want a lover who don't get old, or if you'll never live to see the beauty, the beaty, that same same beauty again - hey - who am I to keep you down? But you know, if you don't love her now, you will never love her again, so just remember that! :wavey:

Best song to cry to: "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart." I cried to that when I broke up with my first boyfriend when I was 14 and I was the one that broke up with him. We just wanted different things in a relationship. He wanted a body and I wanted a nice boy ;) I later dated him a few times when I was a Senior in high school and darn if he didn't change in that four years  so I dumped him again ;)

The best guy did come into my life a few years later. He was worth the wait too

Go and have some fun and maybe someone you will fall in love with will be around the corner. Good luck :woohoo:
