View Full Version : Dreams lyrics quoted in new Mariah song

In the song <i>One & Only</i> from Mariah Carey's new album <i>Emancipation of Mimi</i>, the following lyrics from <i>Dreams</i> appear right near the start of the song:

"Say, players only love you when they're playing (games)."

(Mariah adds 'games' to the end.)

Thanks to my friend Tom, who over the years I have indoctrinated well with all things FM, so he recognized this line straight away when he first heard the song.

She also seems more genuine, and she is confident enough to be who she is, despite all the catty remarks about how she dresses, etc.

I think she can be very annoying, but I have a soft spot for, hence my buying her new album. And I think it's fabulous. Good melodies and hooks, she doesn't go crazy with that voice of hers, and she keeps the ballads to a minimum. Good stuff. She has an amazing voice when she sticks to three or so octaves. Her squealing is not for me and not singing as that word is traditionally defined. I also have respect for her because though I loath the way she dresses, I think she is a genuine person. the DJ's here in Atlanta that interviewed her were later and in private very complimentary of her and said she was real nice and not really a diva, etc.

ChrisThat's kind of how I feel, too. The last CD of hers that I liked (and I honestly didn't like all of it, mainly the hits) was Butterfly, and after that something just went wrong to me. It seemed like she was either copying what she had done before or simply singing a song that was not as good as others. Butterfly might have been her peak. When I saw the first video for this new album, my reaction was Is she trying to be the poor man's Beyonce? because that's what it seemed like to me. It really seemed that she was trying to cash in on the most recent styles and not actually using her own instead. Of course, that one song might not be an indication of the entire album, but I have to say that I've lost interest. I still respect her vocal abilities, though. I think few are born with that level of talent. She has certainly proven with past live performances that she knows how to use hers well, too.

That's probably the main reason I dislike her.Didn't she take years of vocal lessons to perfect the control of her voice and then start playing around and showing off as she does in many of her songs? I think it shows. It's one thing to have that range but to know how to use it is difficult.

Well, that's what my choir teacher always said in high school. Learn how to sing well (or as well as you're capable of singing) and control your voice, then you can play around like Mariah Carey, who can do it all. My choir teacher, who was pretty rigid about the "right way" to do things, admired Mariah quite a bit.

Oh I think she can sing, don't get me wrong. But I think she can sing like every other diva out there so it really doesn't do anything for me, ya know? I like unique voices, not necessarily "the best" singers. I mean, Neil Young is one of my top ten favorite vocalists of all time if that tells you anything . I like a voice that moves me. EXACTLY. I'm not a fan of Mariah's voice per se because she's shrill and annoying with her use of it, but she keeps the vocal histrionics to herself on her new record, thankfully. I can't stand a lot of the "technically perfect" singers because they're so perfect that they're devoid of emotion when they sing. Listening to them is just boring. Back in the day, she had a nice voice because those types of diva singers weren't as prevalent. But then she started making horrific music in the early-nineties, married the King of R&B Mr. Bobby Brown, and lost everything she once had. Mariah and Celine stole a lot of her thunder, too.

I agree in part. I too love Mariah and was addicted "back in the day" and was really shocked when she changed the format of her music. But I had to walk away for a while and come back to her music and appreciate it in a different way. Yeah, she doesn't do ballads the way she used to or use her voice the way she used to, but she does an amazing job of layering vocals and really takes time to make a REAL remix and produces some nice tracks. Emancipation is an awesome album and We Belong Together is worth the price of the album, IMO.

Also, I watched Mariah about 1 1/2 yrs ago do some of her older songs and honestly, she couldn't do it. Her voice was extremely raspy. So, I guess she works what she's got. She's more of a studio singer anyway. But I still love her.

I respect her for having as much respect for her fans as she does, I think it's refreshing.

I could not agree more. She is very adamant about that and I think it's awesome. I saw her getting ready to go into Letterman and she was being rushed in, but walked off the "red carpet" to a fan she saw in a wheelchair, hugged her neck and mouthed the words, "you doing okay?" - I respect her for things like that and this isn't an isolated event.

Anyway, like they say, people build you up to knock you down. I don't like every song or everything she's worn or said or done, but in the end I respect her talent and songwriting and the fact that she is grateful for her fans...and appreciates them giving her the life she has.

In the song <i>One & Only</i> from Mariah Carey's new album <i>Emancipation of Mimi</i>, the following lyrics from <i>Dreams</i> appear right near the start of the song:

"Say, players only love you when they're playing (games)."

I did a little research and I came up with this...

Mariah Carey
Octave Range: 5 (A2 - G7)
Longest Note: 19 sec.
Highest Note(s): G7, G7#, F7, E7
Lowest Note: A2

from this page: http://www.freehostz.com/notes_and_octaves/index.html

However, I don't think she can hit G7 anymore.

Celine Dion
Octave Range: 2.5 (G3- C6)
Longest Note: 20 sec.
Highest Note(s): A5, F5, C6
Lowest Note: G3

But, the website does say it may not be 100 percent accurate...however it does list a lot of info (notes hit) that seems to make it credible

I did a little research and I came up with this...

Mariah Carey
Octave Range: 5 (A2 - G7)
Longest Note: 19 sec.
Highest Note(s): G7, G7#, F7, E7
Lowest Note: A2

from this page: http://www.freehostz.com/notes_and_octaves/index.html

However, I don't think she can hit G7 anymore.

Celine Dion
Octave Range: 2.5 (G3- C6)
Longest Note: 20 sec.
Highest Note(s): A5, F5, C6
Lowest Note: G3

that seems about right though

Also, I always love to point out that Cyndi Lauper has 4 octaves. You look at that little pixie and would never think so, but she does.

I always thought Celine had almost as much as Mariah, but I suppose not. And I have almost four octaves myself, but hell if I can actually use my voice to its full capacity. I have little or no control over it once I get to certain high notes. Forget it, especially I haven't been in choir for a long time.

But anyway, back to the real people. I've heard a lot of people saying that Mariah has a seven or eight octave range, but I didn't think that was humanly possible, actually.

On that note, a voice teacher once told me that many opera singers have only around a 2 1/2 octave range and that's all that's necessary. I guess it's not really all that important to have a large one.

I didn't realize she had that kind of range and she was going from difficult note to difficult note with ease, it seemed. She's great.

I have two words for you:

SHINE. LIVE.

I almost passed out when she performed it. Her voice has not lost a single thing. Not one note. That chorus is a killer and she pulled it out of herself like it was nothing. What a talent. And she's fantastic live. I saw a solo show of hers without Cher two years ago and she came down into the audience to sing (literally jumped off the stage and into the audience) and when people shouted out for her to sing a certain song, she'd sing it. Sometimes acapella.

Ahh, discussing Cyndi's awesome vocal talents again. Love her. I was blown away when we saw her last year - I went out & got her live DVD the next day. She is phenomenal. Diss - did you get the DVD yet?

She's coming back (or she was just here) but it was a casino show & sold out within a week or so & I missed out.

i like the coastal cities
i like the lights
i like the way the ocean blends into the city at night
it's like living on a rolling river
coastline's glittering
like a diamond snake in a black sky

I was impressed with Mariah's vocal range - until I heard more than two songs, and she tends to sing them the same way: with the basic philisophy "why sing one note when you can turn it into 23?"

unbelievable. so much technique and I'm still completely cold. It just does not say ONE thing. And the way whitney raped "I will always love you" will always be the reason why I'll always hate these singers. Dolly has more soul in her fallse nails.

I totally agree. Actaually the only oasis I found watching The Bodyguard was to hear Parton's voice coming from the jukebox for something like 15 seconds, singing thatsong in such a beautiful way. Then Whitney (and even more Kevin Costner) scared me with her acting  and deafened me with her version.
