View Full Version : Soundstage might never see the light of day

OK, I was over on another board (cough, cough) and I came across this startling info.
It seems that someone recently attended a Wallflowers taping and a tour guide mentioned Lindsey.
It was said that Lindsey insisted on doing two takes of every single song, and that even when that was all said and done, he didn't like the performances/final product enough and will not give them permission to air it. So apparently it is Lindsey's decision for his Soundstage not to air--he's exercising his right of refusal.
Keep in mind that this is second hand info.

I really hate to say this but that might explain his tone about the whole thing when I talked to him last Sept. in Philly. It really did not seem like his #1 priority. :(

don't you know that we're waiting?
we are waiting, we are waiting...
i can guarantee you that the performance is better than you think.
and ps, stevie's not the only one with 'phonebook' fans.
when everything went to **** onstage last year, people were content to watch you work out for F sake! no one left, no one bitched, they stood and watched you do push ups...
it's been two years, babe, and you're trying my patience. sign the damned thing over, NOW!

When it didn't air in '04 I started losing hope. Fans lucky enough to be there are the only one's who'll ever get to experience some of those songs other than on bootlegs. We should have known better with his track record. Why, oh why didn't somebody sneak in a tape recorder? GOS will probably never see the light of day, officially. Much thanks to whomever leaked those songs. I play them at least once a day.

I suppose when you've got nothing to promote or aren't interesting in promoting, PR really isn't all that necessary. I suppose if FM does indeed record another album or at the very least, tours once more, they could air his Soundstage in conjunction with that.

I was referring more in terms of the general relationship with the media. It's already difficult to find news about his solo career, to behave like that wouldn't encourage any Tv to work with him on a similar project in the future, I think.
But nothing is official yet, and in any case, he can always change his mind.

Ahh...sorry. Very true. When people don't count you nor look at you as a viable solo artist, you're already up the creek without a paddle so-to-speak. I still can't believe he ended up doing Soundstage. To throw it away does seem to show a lack of consideration on his part. Then again, you know Lindsey...if the right 500 people heard it... ;)

I was perplexed myself back in August of 2003 as to why he was doing this show. He did not have anything to promote at that time. His response to me in Philly about the whole Soundstage question was really odd, too. I really did not get a good vibe about the whole thing and I was really afraid to post that. I still don't want to say what he told me at first but then he did say that it would air this spring. Something is fishy.

He'll never learn. :distress:If someone acted like this in some other business, we would call it illness. But in "artists," it's called "perfectionism" or "the artistic temperament."
Lindsey was actually mixing a live album CD of Soundstage at one point with Mark Needham, but that stalled, too. Maybe he felt the show would make a better audio than video. (I got to hear some stuff from it, like GYOW, which sounded just like all the other GYOWs to me.)
I don't think the audio or the video will ever legitimately see the light of day.

I had forgotten someone posted (it may have even been you) knowing that Lindsey had been in with Mark Needham. Would WB have been releasing the audio or would it have been through PBS like the Live In Boston DVD? At any rate...very odd.

i would take the audio, but seeing him perform those songs is the aim.
oh, and overdub it to the max if you must, make it perfect, whatever. i'm fine with the highly unreal Dance, those countless hours spent mixing in vocals and all that is what makes it such a fabulous and pristine album. otherwise, it would be a boot.

I'm pretty sure that Lindsey will be first, 'cause that so called "chinese democracy" (or is it chinese democrazy ;)) should've been released in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001,... :D Besides, I have faith in Lindsey!
People, we all know that Axl has done NOTHING since "the spaghetti incident?" in 1993... except for a few "live concerts" (I mean the ones that he showed up, so that would be two or so) And yeah, Lindsey hasn't made an album since 1992, but he sure was busy, just look at gift of screws (I know, it's not an official release, but he was busy!!) and of course, the reunion with FM, SYW and a few guest appearances.
Speaking of Guns 'n roses: look at what Slash, Izzy, Gilby Clarke, Matt Sorum, Steven Adler & Duff Mckagan have done since their days with the band.

Well, if we aren't afforded the opportunity to purchase it honestly (which most of us would), then I hope some unscrupulous Soundstage employee swipes a copy and leaks it...so we can get it for free.
Missed opportunity = lost revenue.
When it comes to commerce, marketing and serving a huge fan base...the powers that be (band members included), their actions are entirely idiotic!

I would say Lindsey due to the fact I don't believe Axl will ever front a band again after doing a "Jacko" , wrecking his looks and retreating into his own little world.. Having said that I don't know what the hell Lindsey is thinking of doing, unless he releases something and takes it on the road in the next 18-24 months he's history. He ain't The Rolling Stones who can go on and on and still (I feel) get better with each tour... He needs to do it now or give it up for good..
The ultimate nightmare would be Lindsey joining Gun's 'N' Roses  By the time they got an album out they would have to be wheeled on stage...
Screw Guns anyway.. They were awesome in their era but the talent has gone on to do other things.. Izzy and Slash are better off without them.

I have it on TIVO and have watched it twice already. She really was gorgeous. She didn't have to do the "I'm so pissed off" look to be sexy either. She could smile and laugh and she always looked hot.
Maybe that's my issue with Lindsey. I think he tries too hard to look sexy. It's totally transparent to me. The gyration over intro of Stand Back was, in three words? Don't go there  As for his facial expressions, he's got that whole pissed off look thing going on (please see above  ) and I guess either you like that or you laugh at it. Here is what he wrote about Lindsey.
Monday, 3.3.03
Not sure what I wrote to the contrary, but the internal weather is fairly sunny. Yesterday was one of the top 5 L.A. weather days ever as far as crystal clear sunshine goes. You can see every window on every house on every hill. Rare occurrence. Those days really fill me up. Friday night the work peeps and I went to see Fleetwood Mac. Pretty freakin rad, I must say. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to meet anyone from the band. Like, not even Lindsay Buckingham. Oh yeah, maybe I did. I realized watching him that we have sorta similar playing styles, so that was really cool to hear blaring loud. The show was put on in a giant sound stage with full arena-sized sound and lights. And Miller sponsored it, so the cans of MGD, High Life & Lite were just flowing. Stevie was cool as all hell. If I didn't have a few great Moms already, I'd want her as well

I agree he seems very real and not the run of the mill rock star. I think he's never been that comfortable in the spotlight, so he frequently vacillates between overt shyness and over the top stage antics. The recent outgoing stage persona is mosty to take the pressure off Stevie I'd say. No matter what her public thinks, I think she appreciates not having to carry the show all the time like she has to in her solo career. To hear some people tell it he's just a hot dog trying to intrude on Stevie's spotlight. I agree he's not everyone's cup of tea, but that leaves all the more for us!
Thanks for that pic Christy. HOT!

++200.......... I love you!
Lindsey is sexy in my eyes and I am not a fan of the guitar masturbation intro to Stand Back. I find him to be sort of little boyish in many ways, (see DR doc) and his vulnerability is really charming. Plus, his eyes are amazing and when he plays over top of you whilst staring through you? Sheebus. I don't think he tries too hard at all, I just think he has more confidence onstage and it shows.
Diss...Lindsey..geriatric? Cause of his gray hair?

Story of me waiting on a new Lindsey Buckingham solo album
The year was 1996 and I had just bought the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers disc She's The One. To me, Lindsey's backing vocals on Walls were one component that made this song Tom's best in years. In the album booklet, it says that Lindsey Buckingham appears courtesy of Reprise Records. I took this as an indication that a new solo album was on the horizon. You all know how wrong I was, but more on that later.
At the time, my mother was training in a computer course to keep up to date with current methods at a bureau pool facility that already had something new and then special: the internet. I went there a few times to surf online (being still in my teens, the boss allowed me to) and visited the website of Reprise Records, among others. First, it said the record was going to appear end of summer. When the end of summer had come, I was dissappointed that the record had been pushed back for 2 months. The year after, The Dance was released. At least something. When I was on holiday in Scotland in 98, I bought the soundtrack to Twister, which has the beautiful Lindsey and Stevie song Twisted on it with drums by Mick. Another glimpse of what's to come, and when my uncle got an internet connection the next year, the Reprise website listed Lindsey as a candidate for a new release for next year. Come 2000, they had taken his name off of that list. Duh.
Since then, I don't believe news of a new Lindsey solo album release, until I've got it in my hands.
It was great to hear the 1st song from Say You Will. What's the World Coming To and Steal Your Heart Away are the 2 best songs on that album for me, with Stevie's Destiny Rules close behind in 3rd position. Miranda is brilliant too.
Then, I went looking for downloads of Gift Of Screws, with my own DSL. Apart from 2 songs that I still want in full CD quality, Down On Rodeo (can you hear me Annie?) and Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind (the horn section shines!), all of the other songs were somewhat unpleasant to listen to because they suffered severly from having been transferred through the internet so often (digital hiss!). But though I can't understand what he sings, there are great melodies.
Now that Lindsey has taken so long with this, I highly doubt that his A&R man still takes him seriously, and is somehow not keen on working out a promotion model that Lindsey might blow up again by stopping the release. That's why the A&R guy probably tells him about how much more money and recognition he would get, if he transformed his material into an FM project. It's only logical for the label to do it this way: if he does not allow them to release material of which they believe it will sink in today's marketplace anyway, they do not need to drop him from their roster and this way they have an option for the next FM album, which will sell as big as the last one.

But he's still the only guy who can play "World Turning" with the requisite approach!
I was listening to Chicago 95 of "World Turning" yesterday in the car on the way to Ralph's to pick up more of the Copper River sockeye salmon because they have it on sale this week for $11.99 which is incredibly inexpensive considering that most of the time it's priced around $15.99 to $16.99 & THAT'S at most of the retail outlets throughout the Southland, so anyway I was listening to "World Turning" from Chicago 95 in the car yesterday, & you have Dave Mason playing the riff to what sounds like "Life in the Fast Lane" while Billy Burnette just chugga-chuggas on his rhythm part & the CLAVINET of all things plays the finger-picking guitar part ... & there's another question ... I only remember Steve Thoma playing keyboards on the 1994 & 1995 tours, but there's another person playing keyboards, too. On some songs you have a Hammond as well as another board of some sort, & similar situations. For example, you have somebody playing acoustic piano on "We Just Disagree" & you ALSO have someone throwing down string pads. Now sometimes one guy can do both, but you can always tell from the piano arrangement whether it's ALL that one guy is doing or whether he's doing something else, & this piano part on "We Just Disagree" is definitely ALL the one guy is doing. So who else is playing boards?

He's a sick individual.
I know another sick individual in Disneyland. He's got an anal pass, that's why he loves LB.
Listen to me from disneyland: This show is gonna air and his dvd is going to shelve.
I know the chance of airing soundstage is still very small. But I think Lindsey's learning. Not in the pace we want him to but it's going to happen. So is his new solo-outing. Three years after SYW is still incredibly fast in his book. He also knows that time is running out and the world's turning.

Lindsey Buckingham embarked on a productive and storied solo career....Not to nitpick, but three albums in twenty-four years does not a "productive" solo career make.
I am thrilled that LB's Soundstage has an airdate though... I've been dying to see it (especially "MURROW!"). :D

I'll have to rely on some kind soul capturing the broadcast and putting it online, even just bits of it (ie, Down On Rodeo :p ).
Glad to hear it's finally coming though.

Well, they also made it sound like he was gone from the band for 18 years. More like ten.

Does Soundstage release DVDs of all their shows or at least make them available? Are the DVDs all the songs performed or just the ones on the show? Sorry if this has been asked for, I just skimmed the thread for a refresher.

I just found a listing for Lindsey's Soundstage in Boston. It's scheduled to air four times from July 22 through July 30. I'm looking forward to finally seeing it. :blob1:

Hey everyone,
I know this is a weird time/place to introduce myself, but this is my first post. A lot of you already know me from other boards and e-mail lists (Enchanted, the now deceased Burnish, and *gasp* Mick's "chatroom"), and I would have been on the Ledge much sooner (like, years ago) but I had issues w/ the activation e-mail and could never seem to join. But I'm finally here and I noticed this thread because I was the one who originally posted the information on another board about Lindsey exercising his right of refusal. This was told to me by a coworker who attended the Wallflowers taping. Now it looks like Lindsey's Soundstage might be airing after all, and I'm really excited about that! :blob2: Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say "hi," and I may be posting again soon about the Stevie/Don and Stevie solo shows because I'm on the fence about which ones to attend.
Nice seeing/meeting everyone!

Oh, great, now you're forcing me to put away my Big & Rich CD and pull out the Live In Chicago 1995 disc. I'll get back to ya in a couple of days...I'll solve the mystery.

I'll get back to ya in a couple of days...I'll solve the mystery.Since that show was done as a TV broadcast, maybe the clavinet on "World Turning" was added in the studio. I sure don't remember anyone other than Steve playing keyboards at the Northern CA shows, but sometimes those guys are offstage.
Maybe Steve is playing it, & I only imagine I hear a B3, too (although listen to 2:13 to 2:16). But that still leaves the mystery of the two boards on "We Just Disagree."

Okay let's go all the way in positivism. (that's my middle name).
Lindsey's Soundstage was delayed a few times due to the fact it had to coincide with his new solo-album. Now it's listed to air end of July. Some reruns later and my prediction will be true: The album sees the light of day on my 40th birthday: sept. 23rd.
Come on Stefan, p*ss some acid on this post. :D

Gerald, personally I think Lindsey has been holding onto his new album this whole time just because he wanted to release it especially for you in time for your 40th.
He's a lovely bloke that Linds!
He's got 10 years to make me an album for my 40th, although I don't know if that's giving him much time.

So your acid p*ssing has nothing to do with reality? Glad you say that yourself.... :p
