This was inspired by the Stevie contest, where quite a few ledgies showed their lovely vocal abilities...I'm just wondering how many others are musically inclined.
Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
What genre of music would you prefer to create?

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I took piano lessons for eight years and played the flute in band.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
Not very well. Alto.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Neither.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
No.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
This isn't necessarily musical creation, but I wish I were more classically trained in piano.

Yes, I can sing...Dont know my octave range or voice type.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Nope, Dont write songs, lyrics or music...
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
Nope...Have thought about attending a local RIAA certified Recording Engineer course
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
Metal and/or Hard Rock...Definitely not the type of music associated with most Fleetwood Mac fans

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I can play rhythm guitar. I'm working on piano/keyboards (as of now, I'm at "stevie-level" :( )
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
Yes, though I go off key a lot. I'm a baritone. My range (I just figured it out by seeing which notes I can match on the piano) is A2 to F5. so...like 2 + octaves..
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Both. Though, in my opinion, I need A LOT of work.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
Of course. I really just want to join a local band though.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
Indie-alt-country-dark-rock

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
i started on piano at five, moved to clarinet (a fling, really) and ended on violin. i can play a guitar, but it requires so much concentration and time, i can't say that i play.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
if i catch some flattering acoustics, absolutely. and range? that would be whatever stevie's currently rockin' because i've been 'doing' the vegas show kind of well.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
ummm, i can sit and play chords on a piano for like, three hours. i don't necessarily consider that to be composing.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
dreamt of it? this little girl wanted to be a rock star or a spaceman, though rock star was always number one. then debbie gibson came along, that might've steered the dream a little towards pop stardom. then GNR came around and i was back on track.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
that really hott singer/songwriter genre. bitter like ani, incoherent (at times) like tori, funky like mike doughty, sexxy like stevie, and irreverent like steve poltz. but of course, that would all be just ME.

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?I took violin lessons in elementary school but retained nothing from them. One of the things I regret is that I wasn't disciplined enough to start learning something at an early age.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?Yes, and I have about a four octave range. I'm a soprano.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?I've written a few that were horrible.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician? So many times that I can't count them. I was once all-consumed with it. I was even going to major in music in college and learn how to play the piano pretty late in the game. Then I settled for studying to be a history teacher on the college level, which I think might actually be better suited to me. I always think I want to be a famous singer but in reality it seems that I much prefer to sing alone in my room most of the time.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?I would do alternative country if I were a famous singer. It would be kind of country, kind of folk, kind of rock in some places.

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
**I play percussion and have been for about 15 years or so
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
**No, I can't sing but I do it often lol...not sure what my actual octave range is
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
***No - I wrote some drum cadences in high school - but nothing else
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
**Oh yeah - I thought that was going to be my career path until I discovered public radio  I dropped out of the college music program - then joined up with two friends and we had a great little rock band - we were pretty popular in our little town - it was a blast!
What genre of music would you prefer to create?

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I can play a little piano. I've been playing for a while now.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I'd like to think so. For a while, I could hit like, Ann Wilson type notes, but I lost all that a while ago. Now, I'm in the alto range, I guess. I sound like Natalie Merchant/Chrissie Hynde/Patti Smith, if that gives you any idea.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Just lyrics. Angsty, 15 year old girl lyrics.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
All the time. I've been taking steps twoard it for years, and I think I'm reaching something big now.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
I'd love to play rock. Prefferably alternative, punk, or garage. I want to combine my influences into a sound that's all my own.

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I started playing piano 11 years ago. I picked up flute when I was in 5th grade for band but I never really enjoyed it.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I have more of an alto voice, but there are some soprano notes that aren't totally out of my reach, I'd just rather not sing them. I've bounced back and forth between the two in choir.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
I try to write songs, let's put it that way. I have lyrics without music, music without lyrics, and somehow a couple of them ended up finished. I'm feeling kind of held back by writing solely on the piano so while I have time this summer I'm going to pick up guitar and see if I can make that work.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
I'd love to be a session musician. I've had my share of front and center and I don't like it all that much. I don't want to be a rockstar, I just want to work with them. I can't imagine doing anything but music in my life and still keep my sanity. It's the be all end all ultimate everything.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
In a utopian world? Classic rock, hands down. Pop, rap, country... not my thing. I could do them if I had to, but it wouldn't be the same.

I've bounced back and forth between the two in choir.Yeah, I think I know what you mean. I'm a soprano but I did alto in the choir in high school. It was a weird situation though, because I was doing in mostly because the other girls couldn't sing alto for whatever reason, and even though I wasn't an alto, I was there and could sing the notes. I would've performed better as a soprano. High school choir isn't all that meaningful, though. Still, Curtis got to do All-State Choir, and that is pretty cool. I just did All-Parish. Woohoo.

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I've been playing piano all my life. I've never tried to learn anything else, which seriously irks me.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I can carry a tune, but I don't sing. I wish I had Peter Gabriel's singing voice.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?Hehhehhehheh.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?Yes. I wish I could have built some sort of career out of music, but alas I did not. I play in a Fleetwood Mac cover band now -- we play in casinos & community parks & **** like that & we even make a little money, but we don't do it for a living.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
If I had been blessed with compositional genius, I'd create fugues & partitas & "Goldberg" variations, & I'd push past the bounds of the sonata-allegro form, beyond even Beethoven's forays into the Cosmic.
Or I'd just write some beautiful chorales in the manner of Parry & Vaughan Williams -- paeans to the pre-War bucolic English countryside when breeding meant something more than just animal husbandry.

I played flute and alto sax for six years for school.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
uh, sort of... I have a fair range, although, I can't sing as high as I used to. I was an alto in choir, mainly because my friends were. I don't have "the gift", though, that's for sure. The gift is being able to make up harmonies that are perfect at any moment, throughout any song. I struggle to make up most of mine. Also, I don't have the most beautiful voice quality.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
No. only song parodies.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
totally. well, not so much a "musician" as a singer.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
musically, funk. singerly, rock. I'd love to play bass, and make up superfunky kickin slap poppin bass lines...

guitar, since I was 15. Before that, I tried keyboards, clarinet, recorder (lol, but anyone can play that one)
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
yeah, been in a couple of choirs, none right now though. Used to sing alto, now soprano. Which is sometimes a little too high. One of the many women who are between soprano & alto :wavey:
forgot the range question.. Not very low, but I did hit a high a once. Intentionally!
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Well I make up music sometimes but I'm too lazy to write it down. Besides, it never sounds as good the next day as it did at 2 at night
But I "arrange" easily. Meaning, turn a song into something I can play on the guitar rather than try to copy it to the detail.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
Oh yes, I even tried to get into the academy of music. Was too f*cking nervous to sound decent though. And I didn't quite fit in there, I couldn't do jazz.. couldn't play with a pick.

I play acoustic guitar a bit. I think I got my first guitar at 14, so that was, um, about 12 years ago. Honestly, I'm not that good at it, but I love playing anyway. Also, I've been learning the keyboard for a couple years now.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I've been singing since I was little. I have no clue what my octave range or voice type is, or even how to figure it out, for that matter.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
No music, just really bad lyrics.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
I started dreaming about being a singer when I was 6, after I made a whopping $11 singing "The Wild Side of Life" at a party my parents were having. I haven't stopped dreaming about it since. :)

Meh...does the triangle count? (kidding). I used to own a keyboard when I was little and could kind of play by ear. Had not a clue which key was what but could go back and reproduce the sound I heard after a while of trying (basic songs, obviously). I can dabble, I suppose.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I've been singing for years but at the insistance of my parents who are degree-whores, they refused to pay for an excursion to a music academy. I'll be paying for that on my own after I get my degree. Alto to Soprano. I feel most comfortable at Mezzo-Soprano (which is in between the two) but have had to sing all to fill voice parts for chorus and whatnot.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Only lyrics. The old addage...you don't use it, you loose it...applies to me and my sightreading ability. I would have to take more music classes before I could physically sit down and write a peice of music. I do, however, write lyrics and have had many copyrighted.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
I've always wanted to be a backing vocalist ever since I heard Patricia Russo (Meatloaf's female sidekick). I still think she's the ****. Of course, Lori Nicks and Sharon Celani are my favs. as well. Think about it...you get to friggin' sing...the spotlight isn't on you...you stand there for an hour and a half, two hours...sway, smile, wear nice things...travel the world...and get paid doing it. I honestly can't think of a better job. Seriously. I'd be in hog heaven if I ever had the opportunity.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
I love listening to jazz standards but I think what I write is more than likely in the pop/rock genre.

Yes, alto/sop
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
Yes. 1 song - music only, tons of lyrics.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
Considered it after receiving an offer to join a band in San Francisco. My daughter was 7 years old at the time. I turned it down. Otherwise, I've been in a few "garage" bands that never played out. And I've done several gigs with a Sweet Adelines chorus. :D

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I play guitar--electric and acoustic. I have been playing for almost a year. I have been a dancer most of my life--tap, ballet, jazz, and modern, so I haven't had the time to devote to an instrument, but I always wanted to play one. I have decided to make time to do it now, because I'm finally out of college and have time to devote to playing music.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)? Yes, I have been singing all my life. My voice type is really alto, but my range is pretty vast: low soprano to bass, if necessary.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics? I write poetry and songs, but no music.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician? Not really
What genre of music would you prefer to create? I love all types of music, but I especially enjoy playing and singing (because it is best suited to my voice) rock and country.

Thanks for the compliment. I guess I got a little of my voice from my mother. She has the most amazing voice; I wish I could sing like her. She was offered a recording contract fresh out of high school, but her parents refused to let her take it. They didn't think that was the right kind of life for a "lady." They wanted her to go to college, so she went and gave up her dream. I just have to tell myself that she grew up in a different time (She graduated high school in 1965) than I did, and things were different then, especially in Tupelo, Mississippi (which is where she grew up).
Although, she turned out to be an exceptional teacher (I guess that is the silver lining, if there is one). She doesn't like to talk about it. It is really sad.....what could have been for her. :distress:

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
I started playing clarinet and moved to the oboe. The band needed tuba players, so I picked up the tuba for marching band. I played bassoon throughout high school and majored in it in college. I'm a serviceable rhythm guitar player- I prefer playing 12-string acoustic. I'm a better piano player and I prefer it to all other instruments these days.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I am a tenor. I've been singing since I was a little kid. I also majored in voice in college. My "chest voice" range is B an octave below middle C to C# an octave above middle C. With falsetto, I can go fairly high, however I don't really prefer my falsetto voice.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
I have many songs under my belt. My band released two CD's- both to not much acclaim, although I am proud of them. The music industry is all who you know and has nothing to do with talent.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
I was a working musician supported by my day job for 15 years. Sometimes fun, sometimes not so fun. It's not all it's cracked up to be. Again, unless you have connections or don't mind sacrificing your muse to banality, the music business is not for you.

Although, she turned out to be an exceptional teacher (I guess that is the silver lining, if there is one). She doesn't like to talk about it. It is really sad.....what could have been for her. :distress:
Jeez that's awful, never hold your kids back!

Do you play an instrument? If so, what kind(s) and for how long?
Okay, I mostly play my six string (since I was 15). It's been awhile since I've played piano, but I used to do that, too (started age 10). I have bongos at home and a pan pipe. I play anything that's available, even if I don't know how to play. I don't know how to read music for guitar, I just either make it up or figure things out by listening.
Can you sing? What is your octave range and voice type (i.e. tenor, alto, etc.)?
I DO sing, but am I good at it? I don't really think so. I wasn't born a goldenthroat, that's for sure. I'm pretty critical about my voice, but singing is something that I can't help doing. When I was in high school, I was an alto, but I was better suited singing with the tenor boys :D.
Do you write songs? Just music? Only lyrics?
I compose both just music and music with lyrics. I don't have much care for lyrics, so some of my songs have vocals where I'm singing pure jibberish.
Have you ever dreamt of or seriously considered being a musician?
Oh yeah... I'm not doing much of anything else with my life, really.
What genre of music would you prefer to create?
Well, I can't say until I know all of the genres out there. I hope to never be faithful to just one genre, though.
Actually, some of my songs are posted on this CBC related website, if anyone is interested in hearing them. You'll need RealPlayer to hear them:
