I have mixed feelings about this whole thing - if something huge is built there, will it show the world how proud/patriotic/brave we are? Or will it say "hi, we're all assh*les over here & we really want to give you something else to blow up."

Opinions?

No, it will show the rest of the world how tacky and tasteless we are. His towers are fugly to look at. But I pray that the current name "Freedom Tower" is 86'ed.

I was talking about tacky and tasteless in a Vegas thread but it's equally at home here..

"Freedom" as a name is bound to piss off some extremist group for a start and almost begs for a repeat of the awful events of 2001 to happen as I'm sure it would enrage those that destroyed the towers in the first place by waving the name "Freedom" in front of them..

As for Trump's idea... Well, they look too similar to the originals which is going to upset many families and be a grim reminder to anybody that sees them.. What a stupid thing to do.. :(

If you were to ask me I'd question the whole moral issue of building anything there in the first place.. It's a site of a mass murder. It should be respected and left vacant apart from a fittingly subtle memorial and not have a great big f**king monument with a patronising name attached, but that I suspect is what the American mentality seems to want (no offence to any individuals in the USA but I tend to question the morality of the States far more than I did pre-9/11 and pre-Bush). Any large structure in my opinion would be vulgar, tasteless, obscene and an insult to the people that died that day..

I kind of feel like it should just be left as it is.

And I agree that his models look too much like the originals.

Which is exactly Trump's taste. I agree it would be a good idea to leave the site free of such monstrosities. Just build somewhere else and don't use that design or name.

Actually, I'm all for rebuilding the towers just exactly as they were (with the exception of some more state of the art evacuation techologies...and maybe anti-aircraft defense weapons on the roof). Would be a big "F-U" to the terrorists.

"Knock 'em down, we'll rebuild 'em...and kick your ass if you try that crap again".

Don't you know? We love to tear down beautiful, old historic structures and then proceed to clutter up our city skylines with billboards and fugly buildings. It's the American way dammit.:laugh: Oy vey with the Trump

i think the fugly glass 'freedom tower' is just tacky.

trump rebuilding the towers doesn't make much sense to me, you want to build the same thing? didn't we see how that turned out?

as for building nothing there, well that doesn't make sense either. it's a tiny island with zero room to expand. there's plenty of open office space around town right now, but who's to say that ten years from now that space won't be looking mighty nice.

i can see the 'it's a graveyard - don't build there' side of things. i just happen to favor the 'life goes on around you' side.

personally, i have never been down there. i lived in nyc for two years before and for two years after, and never once was i tempted to go have a look. and no, i can't see why someone feels compelled to go. i have no desire to relive that day or the emotions of that day.

I think they need to build a memorial at ground zero like they did in Oklahoma. I thought the way Oklahoma dealt with "what to do with the land now" was priceless, and a very nice way to honor the victims.

What I'd like to see would be five towers, all of which would look like the old two towers. However the two right towers and two left towers would be about a quarter of the size of the middle tower. I'll let you visualize that for a minute. Yeah, THAT'S what we should do. Let's not mince words here folks!

At first I thought it was crazy, but now I'm starting to like the idea. I can't imagine anything else in that area and that part of the skyline. The "Freedon Tower" design looks hideous. :distress:

Keith Olbermann (MSNBC) wrote a good article on this...

He was on Larry King last night talkin about it, I actually think it's a good idea...although he made a good point to say that it's going to be hard to lease out these new towers..
