We have a visit by our District Manager tomorrow to look at standards and presentation in the store. My boss knows this but he wants to rip out the window displays tonight and put in a promotion that doesn't start until the weekend..

He's going to make a mess of it tonight, as usual, and tomorrow we will get marked down for it being not inputted correctly or half finished... Why does he do it? I just want to know why....

Amsterdam is party town. London is great but expensive. Paris is ..well...Paris and fun. Greece I hear is the best place to party and it's cheap, like Spain but these aren't European countries.

If I had my choice for New Years...I'd go to Greece. Europe gets very cold and I don't think Greece gets as cold.

Well you have to come to the UK for sure.. For a start I love London for all it's high points and problems (back down there next week actually), the architecture and parks are really nice. Plus you have to stop by and visit us UK ledgies!! It would be rude not too....

Secondly we have good scenery around the country, if you are a Nicks fan a visit to Rhiannon territory in Wales is a must.. Be prepared for UK weather early in the year though! (Ask Christy about English winters!)

I would also personally visit Italy, doesn't matter where but I've heard Florence (Firenza) is nice. The south of France (Cannes, Nice, Monaco) is one of my favorite places..

Norway Holland and Belgium are good countries too..

Amsterdam... Chill out city...

London can be expensive but it's my favorite Euro city. ( You guys get a crap exchange rate too which doesn't help)

Greece will be warm and cheap but it's kinda boring, scenery wise..

Paris of course is the capital of France and apart from the South of France I've always been the victim of rudeness (They hate the English and vice versa I think), But, France from a scenery point of view is stunning, just don't expect to be treated with respect (they still have an anti-American feeling from Iraq too)

How anti-American are they feeling? We were actually thinking of Paris first but we are open to other cities. London is the one place over there that my roommate has been to. I have been to Amsterdam but it was for work so I saw hardly anything and would love to go again. Maybe we'll go there! The winters there are pretty mild if I remember correctly, especially compared to New England.

I think the Anti-American feeling is quite strong, the French opposed the Iraq "liberation" but are now quick enough to want their contractors involved in the rebuild of the country  I disagreed with the reasons for going into Iraq but from the information I read it seems France had a nice agreement over oil with Saddam so they are a bit pissed still... But I wouldn't not go just because some locals might (will!) be rude because it's a place you must see at least once. The countryside is really nice.

I have been to Amsterdam 6 years running and it's a fun city. Lots of clubs and places to go. In April it's chilly ( 50's) so I can imagine their winters...I guess compared to New England anything seems mild, even New Jersey. Mari would know...

Paris was fine for me. I don't know French and I felt fine. It gets FREEZING there. I was there in February and it was 20 degrees everyday. Maybe that was rare but I told myself that Paris only in spring! No fun climbing the Eiffel Tower in snow LOL.

London, I want to go back there because that's fun. I had someone to stay with so it's alot cheaper.

That's all I have been to though. So many more cities to explore! You are so lucky SuzeQuze you can go!

how about people talking to themselves?

< complain >
The colleague I shared my room with today, started out with a coveted racist slur about another colleague (grrr) , and then as usual she's been talking to herself on a level I can just hear for the rest of the day.
Some more of those negative remarks about various people, just in a way that you don't realise what she's saying until 5 minutes later. But it's always the other people who make mistakes, never her. You can't tell her about a mistake she makes anyway because she'll go mad. And she's very chaotic so there have been plenty of things gone wrong!
Oh, and she's the type to complain to the bosses that the rest of us aren't nice enough to her. All so indirect and manipulative, I hate that.
I got along really great with the other woman I share this room with, but it's not likely she'll come back (recent bancruptcy of part of the company).

REALLY?!? That's surprising. When I was up in Canada (a 1/4 century ago), I remember people complaining that they got treated really poorly and snobbishly by the French people. Exactly the reason for the general dislike for Americans to begin with.

I think the British Empire invented elitism Lux, America have just fine tuned and perfected it.. Which is the reason the rest of the world has a tainted view of American culture. The "We do it bigger/better/taller/faster/longer/greater" policy and the "If it's not invented in America it ain't ****" policy too.. Not saying Americans all think like that, certainly the ones I know don't (Christy and many ledgies included :xoxo: ) but it's a general feeling for sure...

I totally agree with you Amber, Americans are a friendly welcoming bunch (you are an example of that :xoxo:  ) but there is a definite belief that America is superior in the world arena, it's why so many countries have disagreements with the States, because America interfere with the policies and internal actions of other countries far too much (usually because they have something to lose) sometimes with direct consequences (Vietnam, Iraq, Iran etc). This is why they get targeted for terror attacks more by extremists. As I've said before, it's not so much noticed inside America but when you travel around other countries especially in Europe and Asia you get a better picture. Look at the treaty on global warming and reduction of burning fossil fuels, everybody agrees on it except the USA, they won't sign because they are the biggest users and abusers and there is a belief they are above it....

The French are generally arrogant and rude as people, based on my opinions because I've never conversed with a pleasant one in 30 years on the planet.

The Brits are seen as either "reserved" or with a weed up their ass by other countries and they have a thug mentality when abroad which I also believe is true because I'm ashamed to say I've experienced it so it's all about generalisations..

The English are a strange bunch, there are probably about 40% of us that are very friendly and happy to talk to perfect strangers (especially tourists) and hopefully I'm in that catagory. Of that 40% about 35% live more than 50 miles from London. The remaining 60% are made up of very conservative introverts that will not want to even say hello, assholes that would rather kill you than smile (they tend to favour the London Underground), backward folks that don't even know one accent from another and those other kind of people that don't care one way or the other.. Bath is nice and so are the people, London is just London, whatever it is, you can find it there  and Cardiff I'm told is nice too, although thats a discussion in itself because there is a feeling that the Welsh have a problem with the English but nobody else..

I totally agree with you Amber, Americans are a friendly welcoming bunch (you are an example of that :xoxo:  ) but there is a definite belief that America is superior in the world arena,

On many levels America is superior in the sense the world looks to us for help be it through the UN or on other levels such as support for third world countries or more recently the Tsunami victims. The US gives more aid than anyone else, esp. if you consider the private donations. I know it is seemingly less when looked at via the GNP fraction of govt. aid, but I think that is an unfair method to judge America by as America's GNP is not comparable to the rest of the world's GNP, etc. But, even if that number is used, it is still a staggering sum and far more than anyone else, though no other country can be held to America's standard - which is my point  So, while I think that does not make us any better than anyone else, I think it makes the rest of the world resent us a little -- sort of in the way really rich people are hated pretty much automatically by some even though they may be nice people. That having been said, America, like England, France, and really all larger countries, has done some pretty crappy things. I am not taking away from that. I am just saying that when something horrible happens in the world a la the Tsunamis - the world looks to America to lead, which we did because we sent our military vessels there with manpower to help, etc. I get that we had a vested interest because American companies are heavily invested there, but I think we would have helped despite that. I base this on the outpouring of American private donations, which clearly were not influenced by the fact that Hilton has three properties there, etc. So, in the end, I think that part of the resentment of America's place in the world or part of the forein view of superiority is that people do and do not want to depend on us. I know I would resent being in that position esp. when the giver, here America, rarely does so without strings attached - though that applies really only to the govt. aid and not the American Red Cross etc.

Look at the treaty on global warming and reduction of burning fossil fuels, everybody agrees on it except the USA, they won't sign because they are the biggest users and abusers and there is a belief they are above it.... That is not exactly true on a couple of levels. First of all, the US was correct IMO not to sign the original Kyoto Treaty (though many subsequent and perhaps better versions existed) because it excluded third world countries and IMO Russia only signed onto it because it knew the US would not and because the WTO complicated it into doing so even if it was a benign gesture. Having said that, I think there ought to be a stronger treaty than that and the US should sign it. Thus, I object on an academic level only.

The French are generally arrogant and rude as people, based on my opinions because I've never conversed with a pleasant one in 30 years on the planet.

I know many many nice French. I do say, however, that it is a little difficult to get along with a nation whose rail workers strike in objection to the shade of green the rail stations are painted  Plus, they are rank hypocrits in their politics a la "let me make money off of SH but US don't you do the same" - both of which mind you were wrong

You can argue that America gives the most aid and I can tell you that America is the wealthiest nation and so this is proportionally expected. We've argued this before but you can't see it. If Australia was the wealthiest nation then we'd be giving the most aid, big deal. It's simple mathematics and we've been through this. It doesn't have a lot to do with the American tradition of raising its children to believe they live in the centre of the world, the most superior place, the most free, democratic and blessed place. It's plainly arrogant and that was what we were talking about, nations thinking they are superior.

I agree America owes the world to some degree - sort of in the same way really rich people should give heavily to charity - though the world is not to be contrued as a charity per se. But, in the end. America gives the most aid of anyone and that aid is FAR larger when private donations come into the picture. Yet, you just cannot say that is a good thing. It is all bad bad bad with you in that aspect.

As for America being the freest - I suppose that is subjective and, therefore, not worth arguing.

Oh bleh, you're a lunatic. The point was that America as a nation holds itself above the world. If you don't see that portrayal you really need to take a big step back.

I never said it did not. I implied that the rest of the world perpetuates that by seeking our aid, which you say we owe because presumably we are what you say.

Who are you even talking to? I'm not even talking about aid. I'm talking more about the education system, the media and the general society bringing children up to believe they live in the best country and then telling the world this.

Really we've argued about aid. You want to include private donations and I don't think you can include private donations without then also weighing in destruction by private groups. If America wants to wave about good deeds from private parties you surely won't be surprised when you reap the whirlwind from destruction caused by these privates parties which you seemingly want to be done in your name.

Blah Blah Blah - I brought in our aid as a demonstration of why the world looks up to us a little if not a lot, thus perpetutating the American superiority theory you espoused and I agreed with. If you can't fallow along, you can't play :p

As I mentioned in another thread, I think America should stop all donations private and public. Let's see how fast her doors get beaten down by pan handlers then

Finally, boy, my donation to the highly destructive American Red Cross sure helped the even more destructive McDonald's build in the Congo  It just galls me that you cannot admit EVER that maybe America is not so bad after all and despite its bad acts. But, to each their own I guess.

I love the English. I love, love, LOVE the French. Haven't has as much luck with the Italians (no offense Romy!).

The problem with America is that most Americans have such a tee-vee fake reality point of view. No one realizes or pays attention to politics and the people in power. The worldview on America isn't really about the nation, but about the political/corporate infrastructure. Is it the fault of the people? Yeah, to a certain degree. However, most of the ignorant masses are basically the equivalent of children. 53,000,000 Americans all knew the score on Dubya, but still voted for him. Sickening yes, surprising no. Human nature, though. Politics is politics no matter what country one is talking about. I think America is more of a target because it's the wealthiest country in the world. Power corrupts. I don't necessarily think that the average politician in America is any more evil than the average politician in any other country.

Yes, thank you, it is the people in power that have this attitude and then brainwash everyone, or attempt to, but it isn't everyone. The America sucks bit is tired because it doesn't just suck it has its good points as well. We just have to get rid of some of these morons in power and make sure the people are better informed with real information. But to paint America itself as bad is over generalizing and untrue.
