er---- You win!

Are you suggesting we all list are 10 favorite songs? Is this from an article? Is this like that episode of cheers where CLiff was on Jeopardy and the real answer is:

What are 10 songs I have never heard?

I have a tendency to change my mind, particularly because my musical tastes have altered dramatically since the hell that was high school (which was a mere four years ago  ), but here goes...(and I do include folk songs)

Fleetwood Mac- "Sara"
Ani DiFranco- "She Says"

No way. Asking for a list of top ten favorite movies is what I call the hardest question EVER. Perhaps someone should start that thread so that I can list 110.

Well, I like everybody's list thus far & I have learned a lot. My list is the best, however. I notice most of you have stuck to the modern rock era, which creates a narrow purview into the window of the soul, whilst simultaneously generating a hyperstylized rubric of encomious yet maladaptive plenitude.

How come nobody voted for the theme from "High Noon": "Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin' "?

Someday, you're going to be reaching up to that high shelf for your thesaurus, and it's going to fall and THWACK you on the head and it will hurt.

I'm just sayin'.

Someday, you're going to be reaching up to that high shelf for your thesaurus, and it's going to fall and THWACK you on the head and it will hurt.I don't use a thesaurus -- that's why my sentences don't make sense! I apply a Lindsey aesthetic: I use the words for their abstract sound. Except in a post like this one, where I want meaning.

I can't recommend any good thesauruses (thesauri?), but I can recommend some good reference books:

Wilson Follett's "Modern American Usage" (1965)
Bryan Garner's "Oxford Dictionary of American Usage & Style" (1989)
Sir Ernest Gowers's "Plain Words/The Complete Plain Words" (1965)

I have these three & I really do recommend them highly. Wilson Follett, Jacques Barzun, Bryan Garner & Ernest Gowers are four of my heroes.

Those sound nice enough, but unless they have entries for "McJob" and "jiggy," I totally don't care. Dig it?

The Tower
05-03-2005, 04:42 PM
"Company" - Rickie Lee Jones
"Blue" - Joni Mitchell
"Love's Recovery" - Indigo Girls
"Happy, the End" - The Innocence Mission
"Ten Years Gone" - Led Zeppelin
"Gypsy" - Fleetwood Mac
"Sisters of the Moon" - Fleetwood Mac
"Dream On" - Aerosmith
"Fogtown" - Michelle Shocked
"Welcome Me" - Indigo Girls

This completely excludes anything from the jazz/standards era. They are completely different eras and I can't compare them.
