View Full Version : What's Your Favorite Sad Song?

This may be a recent topic, but I was watching that Elton John vid "I Guess That's Why They Call it The Blues" (or whatever it's really called lol!) this morning on VH-1 Classics and thinking about how sad the song and vid are and how much I used to LOVE this song when I was like 10 or so. Anyway, other sad songs I love:

"I've Been Away" by Kathleen Edwards on her new album "Back to Me" just rips my heart out. I literally tear up every time I listen to it.

I also think Neil Young has some of the saddest songs I've ever heard: Birds, I Believe in You, After the Goldrush--just to name a few.

"Blue" by Joni Mitchell gets me too.

So what are your favorite sad songs?

Sad music is my favorite!!!

Morrissey: I've Changed My Plea to Guilty/Will Never Marry
The Cure: Trust/The Loudest Sound

Erasure: Stay With Me

Peter Gabriel: I Grieve
The Smiths: Asleep
Kent: 747
Tanita Tikaram: I might Be Crying/Lovers in the City

I could go on!!!

I LOVE Lucinda. I should've put my favorite song of all time of hers, Side of the Road. And yes, the live album is out in May. There's a great cover story on her in the new issue of Tracks.

.
Hey, is that the one that goes "she ran calling wiiiiiiiiiiiildfire, she ran calling wiiiiiiiiiildfire..." and it's about a horse? That song is really sad, I haven't heard it in years, though. Fire and Rain is sad, too, Becky. I always forget songs until someone else says them. Anyway, I thought of Sometimes, by No Doubt:

Sometimes sunshine
Does not want to shine on me
And sometimes I find myself blind
At first I cannot see and then I see it's me

I chose a road when I was young
In search of fun temptations won
And all my soul I did surrender
If I had a chance to go back now
Would I redeem my moral vows
Or would I repeat for my own laughter

From now on, I will behave, but in
The back of my mind, I will be enslaved
Repeat

Sometimes I hide somewhat
Like a bulb behind a shade
And sometimes I ask myself why
Is it cause the lights are too bright
Or because my eyes are closed too tight

Sometimes I find myself blind
Don't use my brain don't use my mind
Distorted feelings always leading my way
But I must forgive myself
and let the past lay down to rest
And be prepared to face myself in another day

From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved

I probably shouldn't even tell this story! It's a total doozy!

My friend owns a building and was showing some office space in it on the 8th floor. There's a rooftop patio just outside the office that was accessible from it. But it has no guard railings around it. Just an open area. So, this couple was viewing the space and had their cute little fluffy dog with them. They let the dog out on the patio and it got all excited and ran out onto the patio. As it reached the edge of the roof, it started putting on its breaks but was going to fast and fell off the edge to its death. My friend Blake ran down the stairs to pick up the body while the bewildered owners basically stood in absolute shock. Can you imagine? Sorry you guys. I shouldn't have even told that story. Terrible, eh? This happened like a week ago. :(

Tear in your hand by Tori. It has a lot of personal significance for me and it is such a gorgeous song with incredible lyrics and atmosphere. When I saw her do this at the Wang (a theater for you pervs) it was a transporting moment. The lights were ethereal, I was so moved.

All the world just stopped now
So you say you don’t wanna stay together any more
Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and Neil’ll be hangin’ out with the Dream King

Neil says hi by the way
I don’t believe you’re leaving cause
Me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream
I think it’s that girl
And I think there’re pieces of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well

All the world is
All I am
The black of the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand

Maybe I ain’t used to
Maybes smashing in a cold room
Cutting my hands up
Everytime I touch you

Maybe it’s time to wave goodbye now
Time to wave goodbye now

Caught a ride with the moon
I know I know you well
Well better than I used to
Haze all clouded up my mind
In the daze of the why it could’ve never been
So you say and I say you know you’re full of wish
And your ’baby baby baby babies’
I tell you there’s peices of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well

All the world is
All I am
The black of the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin’
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand

I just realized there are some gratuitous "wells" in this song!

You have to see her! I've seen her in Banff twice and at the Calgary Folk Fest. She's amazing live! You can tell she loves playing live. It was really cool at the Folk Fest because they have all these great singer/songwriter workshops. And Jane Siberry was hosting one and Ani was in the audience feet away from me. I was at the very front. I'm a huge Jane Siberry fan so I made a point of being there early so I could be right up close. We're talking like maybe 3 feet away from the stage. Jane invited Ani up on stage to sing The Water Is Wide with her and the rest of the people on stage. It was great. Ani was so close to me. It was crazy. A rare experience.

Scarlet's Walk again, I couldn't get into. Too soft and sappy. Sarah McLachlan did the same thing when she his Surfacing, I think. She lost her edge.

Northern Lad!!! "First he loved my accent, how his knees could bend!" Is there a better line???!!! See, that was when she was awesome! Now she's writing soft little light songs. She doesn't bleed anymore for her songs. Know what I mean? Oh, and "when you're only wet, 'cause of the the rain". Holy crap!!! Those were the good old days. How about Siren from the Great Expectations soundtrack? One of my all time favorite Tori songs.

awwww how sad, i have a mini dacshund & that would just kill me :distress: ~

Joy Division...they are masters of the sad song. I think "Don't Walk Away (in silence)" is one of the saddest songs ever written.

I've gone through the previous posts and there are some listed that I also would have mentioned but when I think sad...
I think really sad like:
Taps- in a echo/foggy cemetary
Amazing Grace (probably at the same funeral)
Funeral for a Friend-Elton John

Maybe not quite as sad but thought provoking:
Weather Channel-Sheryl Crowe
The Kick Inside-Kate Bush- old tune but very poignant
Dreams I'll Never See-Allman Brothers
Tin Pan Alley-Stevie Ray Vaughn
Angel from Montgomery-Bonnie Rait
and from our favorites:

I'll so Afraid- Lindsey-pretty deep lyrics, I think
You'll never make me cry-Christine (and I think he did)
and Stevie- although it is unrealeased-Forest of the Black Roses and /or Mistaken Love (but someone already mentioned that tune)
Any way there are some that make me feel rather sad :( :(

Bleed Like Me - Garbage

Oh, yes. I got tears in my eyes when I first heard it. What a way to open it:

Avalanche is sullen and too thin
She's starves herself to rid herself of sin
And the kick it so divine when she sees bones beneath her skin
And she says "Hey, baby, can you bleed like me?
C'mon, baby, can you bleed like me?"

Oy. It's devastating.

All I listen to are either angry or sad songs, since I'm a little self-loathing emo kid like that.

The Pretenders - Kid, Back on the Chain Gang, The Losing, Chill Factor, The English Roses.. I could go on, as Chrissie Hynde's voice has this ablity to turn me into a weeping mess.
U2 - All I Want is You, Running to Stand Still, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, With Or Without You, One, MLK, etc.
Blondie - Faces, Follow Me
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss
Garbage - A Stroke of Luck, The Trick is to Keep Breathing, Medication, Cup of Coffee
No Doubt - Don't Speak, Too Late, Suspension Without Suspense, Sometimes
The Kinks - Celluloid Heroes
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Also, you could say "Precious," because it kicks your ass so hard that it leaves a bruise.

I'll post some more later, but my favorite sad song would have to be "Lonesome Town" by Ricky Nelson. At least it is right now. Sigh.

Similar themed song:

"Thorn Tree In The Garden" - Derek & The Dominos

It's about Bobby Whitlock's puppy.

From Bobby's MySpace site:

"This song wrapped up the Layla album, many people believed that it was about a lost love, a woman...perhaps relating to Eric and Patti. It actually was about Bobby's puppy that was taken from him at The Plantation in Los Angeles, and was disposed of. The puppy was his world at that time...having just arrived in L.A. with no family Bobby got this puppy and a cat named "Peaches". There were alot of people living at the "Plantation", so he was told to get rid of the dog and cat . When he came home from delivering the cat to a home, the puppy was gone. Bobby was so torn up, rather than beat the crap out of the man, he quietly sat in his room and wrote "Thorn Tree". He played it to the man and told him that he was his "Thorn Tree in my Garden", and that everytime he heard this song that he would remember what he had done to his little dog."

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Oh...DEFINITELY!
