Just feel like venting, but I'm sure a lot of younger Ledgies who like older (60's, 70's, and even 80's) music can relate.
It really irritates me when older people treat younger people like they don't know anything just because they're young. I'm not talking about life experiences - but simple factual things. They're older than you, so therefore they must be right.
I'm talking about things like what happened at my work yesterday. My friend, who is a major Fleetwood Mac fan, was at the register when the song "Magnet and Steel" came on our sound system. The customer starting singing along so my friend asked her if she was a Walter Egan fan. She said "Oh is that who this is?" and my friend answered "Yeah, with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks on backing vocals." And the stupid lady told my friend that she was wrong and that it was CHRISTINE singing, not Stevie! My friend explained that she is a FM fan and an Egan fan and that she'd seen FM twice on their last tour. And the lady still insisted she was wrong saying "Yeah well, I was around when this came out, you weren't so I'd say I'm right about this one." My friend told her she wasn't so the lady said "Well I'm going to check my albums when I get home, 'cause I know I'm right."
What's even worse though is back when Carnie Wilson had her stomach operation, some ladies at my then job were talking about it and one of them said "You know, Carnie Wilson, Dennis Wilson's daughter?" When I corrected her she insisted that Brian Wilson is the one that died and that Dennis was the father, and of course, that she had to be right because she was alive back then and I wasn't.
Anybody else have this problem?

Ah yes- I have, indeed, had this problem...
Too many times to remember....but I can recall a couple of times....
In high school we had this teacher who claimed to be the biggest Beatle fan ever...well the only problem was he didn't know didly over squat about the Beatles!! He was constantly getting information wrong...very simple things - and then my best friend and I would call him on it.....he stopped even mentioning the Beatles when we were around....he'd alway insist HE was right because he was around when they were
Then I was at a store once when that Kenny Loggins/Stevie Nicks song came on....a woman SWORE that it was Linds/Stevie and not Kenny Loggins  I finally just gave up even arguing....SO annoying...
Um....lets see...I can't think of specifics but I know this very frustrating thing has happened to me.....but eh - what can ya do...there will always be stupid people around :D

What a b*tch. "I know I'm right cuz I am." Blech. But you WERE right and she is obviously so concerned with being right that she felt like a huge assmuncher when she realized she was wrong.
I don't remember this happening to me with the age thing being the factor. But my Mom always has to be right so I've gotten into it with her. Also, my ex from a long time ago started a huge fight with me because he insisted that Stevie sang all of the songs on Rumours. I told him Lindsey and Christine did too and he told me I was wrong. I looked at him like he was on crack and he got so pissed at me. YOU ALWAYS THINK YOU'RE RIGHT blablablabla. What a pain in the ass he was.

My husband and I are a a bit older (36 and 37) and we have a tendency to hang out with younger people. I have found that people in their 20's are so much more mature and grounded than I was at that age. Sometimes I do find myself thinking I'm somewhat superior to the younger people who work for me (ha!), only because of life experience, though. I would never SAY anything demeaning to someone just b/c they were younger, though! One last thought- most of you younger people ARE smarter than us oldies. I know this by the math homework my fifth grade step-son brings home every night! :D

Not only do they treat you like you don't know crap about crap, but since I look like I'm a teenager, I get treated like one...even though I'll be 30 next year.
I went to Best Buy one time and was looking at FM albums, an employee came up to me and said "You like Fleetwood Mac? You're too young to like FM." I was like "They're my favorite group, I love them. And btw, I'm 27 years old." He goes "Well, you're still too young. I remember listening to them when I was in the Army back in the 70's." Goody for you, here's a doggy bone. Now, can you tell me who sings Black Magic Woman? LOL I didn't say that, but I should have. He probably would have said, "Santana."
Sigh....people are dumb.

One of the doctors I work with was talking with me about music & such. Mac was brought up & she told me she remembers hearing Don't Stop all over the place her senior year of high school. She graduated in 1976. I am 17 years younger, so she kept insisting that I wasn't around then so I had it wrong.
I had to find the specific release dates on the internet for her to finally believe me. And then she was pretty ticked about the fact that she had it wrong.

oh god i hate this!!!!!
I have a great story for you guys....
about a year ago i was bartending and a FM song came on- i was singing along and a customer (about 45 or 50 yrs old) asked if i liked FM so i told him that i love them etc... he goes "well my grandfather discovered Fleetwood Mac when Stevie Nicks started the band in 1967 in Phoenix. He also engineered their first album which they recorded in a tiny little studio in phoenix in 1967." i couldn't help but laugh and tell him that Peter Green... England... 1967 etc.... and he goes "no it was stevie in phoenix in 1967." and i go "dude, first off, stevie was in college in san jose in 1967. She didn't even know who FM was! And besides, Christine McVie was the first woman to join FM and that didn't happen until several years after the band had started." this went back and forth for several minutes and he just insisted that i wasn't born yet so i have no idea what i'm talking about and that his grandfather discovered FM when they started in phx in 1967 so he should know.
then he asks me if i know what marching band was used in tusk and i go "yeah it's the USC marching band and they recorded it in dodger stadium." and he just stares at me open- mouthed and doesn't say a word. f*cking idiot. he seemed to really hate me at that point for "arguing" with him- but he still tipped $20 on a $78 tab. i hope he went home and researched the history of FM.

I usually say(when I'm 100% sure), "I'll bet you $100, right now!" I stick out my hand, to shake on it, and won't retract it! "C'mon, $100, right now!" That usually makes them realize that there's a chance they might be wrong.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm 16 years old and people at my school think I'm a flaming retard for liking Fleetwood Mac and the other kinda music I like. They think it's "old" and older people should be listening to them.
This kid in Spanish today was asking me what songs they sang and of course I said Landslide and Don't Stop since he wouldn't know anything else. He then insisted that he didn't know the songs, even though the girl next to him started singing Don't Stop, and then the girl next to me asked if they sang "that white wing dove song" I of course then had to fill her in.
I also hate how kids my age are stereotyped for liking that rap music and being such screw ups. Whenever I have a Mac shirt on I always have adults giving me funny looks. I'm really starting to get annoyed by it. GAWD.

I've told this story before, but as I've demonstrated many times around here before, I'm not above repeating myself. ;)
We had a student teacher in my art class when I was about 16 years old. It was a well-known fact that I was a Mac/Stevie fan and the subject somehow came up in class. Said student teacher told me he LOVED Fleetwood Mac, and they were one of his all-time favorite bands. I was suitably impressed, of course, but then he boasted, "I even have 'Mystery To Me' on vinyl -- you know, the first album Stevie ever recorded with them."
I explained to him that Stevie wasn't on 'MTM'... that the album was released in 1973 -- two years before Stevie and Lindsey recorded their first album with the band.
He argued that Lindsey joined the band in '75, but that Stevie was already working with them. I told him that Christine was on 'MTM,' and perhaps he had her and Stevie confused. He said he didn't, then proceeded to rattle off the titles of several of Stevie's songs (none of which were on 'Mystery To Me,' by the way. ;) ).
He then told me, "I'm going to bring my copy of 'MTM' in tomorrow and prove it to you!"
Danged if he never mentioned it ever again. ;)
Another funny incident was with the photographer who was taking my senior pictures. We were allowed to bring in our own music to listen to during the session, so I brought in 'Other Side Of The Mirror.'
He told me how much he LOVED Stevie, but always preferred her work with Jefferson Airplane.
Despite my attempt to politely correct him, he absolutely insisted it was Stevie, not Grace Slick, who was in Jefferson Airplane.
One of the things that makes this incident so hysterical is that an entire decade later when Josh (Josh2003) had his senior photos taken by the same photographer, they had the same Stevie Nicks/Grace Slick conversation!
These days I mostly just smile and say, "ok," when people have their Mac-related facts all mixed up.

I had something kind of funny happen at work today. I was taking to a coworker and he is always busting me about liking and following Fleetwood Mac around. Well, he had his radio on softly but I could hear Stevie’s voice on Landslide clear as a bell. So I stop and I kind of point to the radio as if to say "OK. I know that you have something to say". So he looks at me and says 'what"? I say it's Stevie and well it's Fleetwood Mac actually. He tells me that it's The Dixie Chicks. I had to explain to him that yes The Dixie Chicks did cover that song but the version now playing was Fleetwood Mac's. He looks at me like I have 8 heads. He tells me that he thought The Dixie Chicks did the song originally. So needless to say I had to explain that Fleetwood Mac did the song in 1975, Stevie wrote it and the band performed it on the Dance which is where that single came from. Then he tells me 'gee and I like that song, too' as if to say " hey. I like Fleetwood Mac and I don't even know it.

I always have problems with people in their late twenties, it seems. I've encountered a lot of people around that age who were under the impression that they had the wisdom of a person in his or her seventies. They have this attitude like I'm 28 and you're merely 22, so I know oh so much more about the world than you do. This is really, really annoying, to say the least. Sometimes I really want to tell those people that most of my friends are in their fifties and are far more mature than they are, so it would be nice if they'd get off their high horses. My older friends always say they were jackasses when they were in their mid to late twenties; they were convinced that they just had everything figured out at that point. I hope that doesn't happen to me. I can't stand to be condescended to so I dont't want to start condescending to others.
Oh, now I can't resist.
"Don't.........condescend to me.....Take your leave......Take your leave...."

I don't have any FM stories in relation to this topic; I'm being more abstract, basically. I've run into a lot of people who think that there old age of 27, 28, 29 or so has revealed to them all the secrets of life and how to live it and such.

I will be 29 next month and I STILL haven't lived. LOL I have learned a lot of stuff and especially from mistakes. When I turned 26, something clicked in me and I changed. I'm not sure WTH happened, but it was something. I feel like I wasn't an adult, until that moment.

I love being smart, yet dumb, yet misunderstood, yet not not really. I love being complex, yet simple, yet moody, yet consistent. Also I am pretty, yet ugly, that's always fascinating. Plus, nice, yet mean. Giving, yet Stingy. It really goes on and on. It's all part of the Cancer enigma. (include dorky yet dorky).
Thanks, though, that is quite a compliment coming from one of the nicest, most thoughtful, smartest people on the Ledge. :) :)
Oh, as I look at my post, you can also add: Self absorbed, yet interested in others.
Why, thank you for the compliments! :xoxo:
I really like the part about having a nebulous grasp of everything without having too many details about anything. I think that's me. But there are a few topics about which I know some ridiculous, petty details in comparison to other people, like auscultation, of course. I know some details here and there, but they are only details about things no one cares about, anyway.

Isn't that just the way? I love learning about all the different things that different people know, on the Ledge. But, you have to admit, you are going for a degree, so probably have some higher knowledge in the skill you are involved in learning. I've always admired degree people, they have a stick toitiveness that I lack. (somewhat - I have it in some areas). It's always been so hard for me to decide that I want to concentrate, and learn about, only one thing. :distress: It seems so narrow, to me, to not learn about everything together. Because everything affects everything else. I suppose, If i was put to the test, I might get a sociology degree. But this paralegal thing might actually get me a good job! so I can travel...and goof off...lol, I'm like, the quintessential dilletante slacker.
Oh, and you deserve the compliments, else I woudn't give them. Everyone knows, you are hella nice!!! I'm sure it's the consensus.

Everyone knows, you are hella nice!!! I'm sure it's the consensus. :nod:Yes, I suppose I could say that I must know a lot about English because I'm getting a BA in it within the next two semesters, but I have so many posts with grammatical errors and intentionally and unitentially misspelled words! Besides, every time I think I know a lot about something in particular, I encounter someone else at my university who knows a hell of a lot more about it than I do (or ever will). I was just crying today because of this girl in my Women's Lit class who knows everything. I mean, she's read everything and can reference everything and she never forgets any of it. And I hate her because she's double majoring in English and History. I would be doing that if I hadn't blown all of my electives and then some on theatre and music classes and majoring in Social work for some unknown reason for two semesters when I started out. I dabbled in other things and now I'm jealous of those who already had everything planned out. This chick I'm talking about is younger than me but further along in her degree programs because she takes so many hours every semester and works her ass off. And then she brags about all of it, in addition to actually standing in front of people and bragging about how all of her professors think she's so cute and they would give her As just for that if she didn't actually earn them. Okay, wow, that was a tangent. I think I stopped addressing your post after my third sentence, Amber. :sorry:
Oh, and I meant to say thanks for the compliments again. :xoxo: Is it really the consensus? I'm sure there are some who would beg to differ. But they're probably nice enough not to say so!

It's okay. We all have seen that girl. sometimes we may have been that girl. Think about that girl, but in the way that that girl helps you be the best girl that you are. remember, no one has your experiences, no one has your insight. People will always be more successful and smarter than you. So what? It doesn't mean they are actually smarter than you. Oops, I left in the middle of this, then talked to my really nice friend on the way, so I forgot the rest of what I was saying. anyways. Uh...I don't really think there is anyone on the ledge who would say that you are less than nice.

But we all have something unique to offer, regardless. I think so, anyway.
Oh, but about me being nice... There's someone who's getting on my last nerve, and I don't think I'm going to hold back if that continues. At this point, I'm just waiting around to see if this person annoys me enough to where I have to let out my claws and be the bitch that I always act like in my head. Then someone else will be the nicest, definitely. I would already elect Suze, Justin, and some others for that post.

Yes, we do all have something unique to offer. Lots of people recently underestimate me, but I know it isn't true. I know what I know, I'll sing what I've said, it's the thing that I keep in the backamyhead! (to quote Graceland :p ).
Well, as for the other part, you may be talking to the wrong person, as my claws are nearly always out. I would suggest that you keep to yourself, but if you do say something (which is ideal, that you can actually say something) to keep it calm, logical, and without rancor. I'm sure you can do that, you are a Libra! and I don't think you need to elect someone, I think you are diplomatic and smart and thoughtful enough to say it yourself, if that's what you want to do. Try not to get to angry, is the key, you lose power that way. (believe me, I know, I have the quickest temper in the west, and it has not served me well. Even though I have tons of good will, that temper is never productive. ) But, hey, if you snap, try to do it wittily, with aplomb, and you may not come off too bad. Many times, in these situations, other people are thinking the same as you. Other advice? Smack that Bitch UP!!! JK.

No matter what you do in this life, you've already accomplished being a wonderful person... and, in my book, that's the only thing of any true value. You're compassionate, gentle, thoughtful, and someone we need more of in this world.

I have a problem with doing that sometimes because I'll let things build up because I'll try really hard not to say something but then I can't go without saying it any longer. I'll try to remember what you've said if and when the time comes for me to say my piece. I know how unproductive it can be to get really angry. I got really, really angry at Brandon one time, and I wound up not only sounding not so intelligent, I also said things I didn't even mean. So, you couldn't be more right about the anger thing.

You're compassionate, gentle, thoughtful, and someone we need more of in this world.:xoxo: Gosh, you are so sweet. And those are all the things you are! Those qualities come through in you even at unexpected times, like when you write an epic post about how you love some Stevie song that Josh thinks is crap. I get all teary-eyed and sometimes I don't even like the song myself. It was really good to get up this morning and see that you'd written this to me. People hardly ever really knoq (or it seems that way to me) how saying things like that can really make others feel 100% better. :)

Just echoing what everyone else said....don't worry about that girl. There will always be people like her and you will encounter many, many more pompous asses as you further your education. The only thing that matters is that you're doing your best. :xoxo:
And never underestimate theater classes. :D Most of my friends as an undergrad were theater majors. In fact, I was kind of adopted as an "honorary theater major." They threw the best parties.

My former roommates and I used to throw some of the cast parties at our apartment. :D With the exception of the BLT party (which totally got out of hand), they were all amazing. Fond memories. :)

Actually, I'm lucky. People say I have an exquisite taste in music for someone my age, and that I amaze them with my knowledge of the subject. Yeah, I get ignorant comments at times, but I just tell people to **** off. No big deal. It doesn't bug me.[shrug]
