I love this song more then words can describe (can't we all relate to these lyrics at one time in our life: my eyes still close when someone speaks your name, my heart still stops when I stand before you, etc.) Anyways, do you think there is any chance she may do this in Vegas? I know it is a really long shot but if she does anything new I hope she does this song. I really can not wait to find out what songs she will be doing in Vegas.

It's never even been released.

She must have been unhappy with it for some reason or another if she didn't release it on TISL (thankfully), so I don't think she'd ever perform it live. She was scared ****less when she did the new songs from TISL on that tour and those were songs that she had just put out. I can't foresee her taking such a risk.

I just want her to resurrect Sable On Blonde.

Really, you think she was nervous about doing new TISL songs? Didn't she perform one for the Grammys or something?

She certainly feared new SYW songs. I still wish she would have done RTTG more then just that one night. And in the DR doc you can see that she was practicing Illume and Everybody Finds Out. Why didn't she do one of those live?

As far as EFO goes, I think it was difficult to transfer to the stage because it is so heavily produced in the studio. It may just not have worked. I hope she will do it someday, but I doubt it.

I highly doubt Stevie would do an unreleased demo-- My Heart-- at her Vegas shows.

I could see My Heart being the single/new song for this "rumored" greatest hits compilation that may or may not be coming out in 2005 that Stevie may or may not be touring to support (thanks for keeping us fans in the know, The Nicksfix  ).

If so I could definitely see her doing it in Vegas!

The Blockbuster Music Awards, and she was (nervously) shaking her dress so much it's a wonder she didn't tear it off. Of course, I thought she nailed it and by the end of the song, it seemed clear she did too, from the way she high-fived Sheryl and walked off the stage like she owned it.

'My Heart' in Vegas? To borrow from the book of Diss, monkeys will come flying out my butt before that happens. It would make no sense... for all Stevie knows none of us have ever heard of it. She seems reluctant enough to try new songs that have been released, let alone throwaway tracks from a previous record.

My Heart in Vegas?? No way.

Back when she did Gold and Braid...she was more willing to try new things, be flexible, loose...now? Forget it. Even if she had the guts to try something like that it would be dropped after the first night or Stevie would only give us a half ass performance of it from lack of confidence and nerves.

Someone said ,and I think Stevie said in that Jim Ladd interview that the Vegas show HAS to be under and hour and half, so I dont see he filling the time up with an unreleased demo...I would be willing to bet money she doesn't do that song..lol. Plus IMO it's not that great of a song

The other thread is fine as it's helpful, practical.

Let's look at it this way: is Stevie going to perform a demo of a song she deemed not good enough to go on her last album, taking into consideration she's never performed unreleased stuff before (unless it was just about to come out) and rarely even performs a lot of album tracks, let alone B-sides? Yeah right. Not only will she play My Heart, I bet she performs At The Fair, Night Gallery and all nine minutes of Castaway too. And she'll dedicate it to all of us who illegally download her songs from the internet.

I'm so sorry.

I just thought that My Heart seems like it would be good live song. And I sort of started the thread hoping to spark some interesting conversations about "My Heart", since I love the song to death. I'm just really excited about going to Las Vegas, it seems like a lot of the people who aren't going keep getting upset by the amount of Vegas threads. I guess I should have taken that under consideration.

I don't like it. Too melodramatic and Streisand-esque for my taste. The music simply slaughters it. I can see why it was left off of TISL.

Let's look at it this way: is Stevie going to perform a demo of a song she deemed not good enough to go on her last album

The general assumption here and with other posters is that songs -- "My Heart" for example -- are left off of albums because they are "not good enough."
I don't believe that is always the case. (I personally think "My Heart" is a great Stevie song).

There are numerous, varied reasons why songs are cut. More often than not, artists may record many more songs than needed, knowing that not all will make it on an album. If a song isn't "good enough" (a very subjective term), then why was it recorded at all?

I actually really like the song although I think the chorus needs some tweaking.I'm not familiar w/this song. What are the chords?

But Gold & Braid was planned for BD, dropped for some reason, & then stevie turned right around & put it in her show in 1981. We were all just freakin out because nobody knew what it was & most of us even assumed she didn't write it because it didn't sound like her.

well I mean are the chords just her typical A minor ****?

David

That's a good point actually, although Stevie pulled out a few gems during that tour (Blue Lamp was another) because she didn't have enough material I guess to fill the show.not really because Blue Lamp wasn't a gem in '81 -- it was brand new. They just put it on the soundtrack for that dumb cartoon. It made sense to sing it live.
Maybe there is hope for My Heart. I eat my words.
Feel free to whack me around the head like a dumb student. She ain't gonna sing My Coronary, we all know it......did you ever read Whack Your Porcupine" by Kliban?

David
04-09-2005, 10:58 AM
My problem with My Heart is that when it starts it sounds like it's gonna build into a great anthemic chorus, but instead the chorus is rather flat - it's such a letdown. I think the song has potential though.
Stevie doesn't work very hard on her chords, does she?

She doesn't exactly have the unerring sense of melody that Sting had with "fortress around my heart" or "every breath" or "fields of gold"

Instead she meanders melodically more like style council's "my ever changing moods" -- only without the hip jazzy quality

Just once before I die (although I'm not going to die), I want to hear stevie use a diminished 5th chord. But she can't just throw it in .... it needs to be in the RIGHT place. It has to create imagistic or sonic resolution in our minds.

I thought you had decided not to post on The Ledge anymore?

I was just being sarcastic in that post although there are plenty of people who believe that My Heart was indeed not good enough, and who are you to say Stevie isn't one of them?

Thanks for explaining the "numerous, varied reasons why songs are cut", but I'm sure Stevie's many fans who adore songs such as Julia, The Dealer and Sanctuary, to name just three, will have already figured out that songs sometimes don't make the cut regardless of how good they are. And most people here are also aware the much-loved Silver Springs was also a cut song.

You obviously haven't heard Ooh Baby.

But back to the original question. I still don't think there's any way in hell Stevie is gonna play My Heart in Vegas.

My God, trackaghost. Take a chill pill. We're not discussing the fate of the world here. I'm sorry if you felt so deeply offended by my opinion.
That wasn't my intent.

My statements were presented not as fact, but as theory, directed to no one in particular. It wasn't a dissertation. (And it had none of the unexplicable bitter nastiness that you have spewed at me.)

The irony of this is that, in actuality, we are on the same page!

I'm sorry if my post was too harsh. I realise we're not discussing the fate of the world here but then you yourself didn't post on The Ledge for a year after an argument about the Mirage video.
Anyway, your statements appeared directed at me since you quoted me in your post.

I'm completely lost as to what bearing it has that I didn't post a message for a long while after an incidental (and idiotic) spat. I don't follow your thought. Regardless, I'm not here to offend people or cause riffs. I'm sorry if my post bothered you. Let's kiss and make up, please? :)

I should have just been more specific on why I think some songs never get released. I'm making the point that the factor(s) are not as simple as a song being deemed as below par. Here are a few speculative senarios:

Too many songs recorded -- not enough room on an LP
Too many songs recorded -- didn't want the cd to be too long
After several attempts, the song was just forgotten
Song didn't fit the flow and mood of the album
Stevie didn't like the way it was produced
Stevie's producer convinced her to leave it off the album
Stevie decided to save it for another album
It was intended for a soundtrack, but never used
The record company's people didn't like the song
Legal problems regarding publishing rights
Stevie had a "Reconsider Me" moment

Back to the topic at hand...

I really think the lyrics in My Heart are beautiful. I think we can all relate to them after a breakup or if you are in love with someone you can't be with, etc. My favorite lines are "My heart still stops, when I stand before you. My heart still breaks, when you take my hand. My eyes still close when soemone speaks your name..." I think she is obviously talking about Lindsey. They may be broken up but for a few hours every night on any Fleetwood Mac tour (I'm guessing she is refering to the Dance) they do stand before one another and hold hands. And in interviews she often closes her eyes "when someone speaks his name". I don't know, I love the song and I think her voice is perfection. I love her nasally voice and her voice on this song is very nasal but still strong.

I agree - I love the lyrics. I don't care for the musical arrangement or the instrumentation. I've even gotten over my eye-rolling at "windows like the eyes to the soul"... because I've heard and read it messed up like that countless other times since the song surfaced! I always found it funny, because it would have worked rhythmically for her to say "eyes.... like windows to the soul..." I guess she didn't for some crazy unknown reason! My favourite musical part, though, is after the third chorus, when she goes, "and you understaaaaaahaaaand....." into the musical bridge.

If there is any place to resurrect "I Can't Wait," Vegas would be the place. Given the need for big high energy and dramatic production, songs like I Can't Wait, Beauty and the Beast, Rooms on Fire and Fall From Grace are great choices! With Gypsy, visual elements from the video could be re-staged -- that would be cool. "Trouble in Shangrila" and "Candlebright" would be cool too.

Stevie mentioned in a recent interview that she was nervous about what to do on such a big stage. If she consulted her fans, we'd give her plenty of grand ideas.

Nope. I think the music was a track that was sent to her. It's a typical I - IV -V type song. I think it kinda sounds like parts of "Sleeping Angel" at times, but that's just me.

I think the song is boring and uninspired, as are the majority of her "someone sent me a track and I put the melody and lyrics to it" songs.
