ABC News: Peter Jennings Has Lung Cancer

40 minutes ago Television - AP

NEW YORK - Peter Jennings, the chief ABC News anchorman for more than 20 years, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will begin outpatient treatment next week, the network said Tuesday.

Jennings, 66, has been feeling ill for the past several months and was replaced Saturday on coverage of the pope's death by anchor Charles Woodruff. He last anchored "World News Tonight" on Friday.

Jennings informed ABC News staff of the diagnosis Tuesday morning and said he will anchor the broadcast when he feels up to it over the next few months as he begins chemotherapy.

"There will be good days and bad, which means some days I may be cranky and some days really cranky," he told ABC News employees in an e-mail.

Charles Gibson, who's in Rome for the pope's funeral, and Elizabeth Vargas will be Jennings' primary substitutes on the evening news.

Jennings first anchored ABC's evening newscast for two years in the 1960s, and was a Europe-based correspondent for the network after that. He started again as an anchor as ABC tried a multi-anchor format starting in 1978, then took over the broadcast himself in 1983.

How sad! Hopefully, he will have a full recovery. :( Get well, Peter.

NO! Not Peter. I love Peter in a way that's possibly unholy. Aww, man.

I'm not surprised. The dude has been smoking three/four packs a day since he was in his teens.

Has he quit smoking??

Out of all the AmNet anchors, Peter is by far my favourite. Probably because he was born in my country - Canada! I also had the great pleasure of meeting him just about ten years ago - he was here working and I was but a green, green newbie to the biz. And he came and asked my opinions, and listened to my point of views. He was so classy - a great gentleman. So I was very sad when I heard of his illness today - I hope he has a fast and easy recovery.

BTW, what I've read is that he quit smoking 20 years ago, but started up again in the wake of September 11th.

Smoked for 20 years then resumed after 9/11? He doesn't seem to have a chance. George Harrison smoked for just as long and well...

This may not be good news for John Mcvie either, if he still smokes.
