I'm going there April 5-10 for a National Nursing Convention. I just wondered if there is any site seeing I can do with my friends and what dining places i could hit up.

I think there is a lot of natural beauty, but you can't buy alcohol in stores, or something. And there are no bars? I dunno, there is some really weird alcohol thing there, you might want to research it. OOOOO! You can tour the mormon temples! You can debauch some young, gay, mormon boys! Watch out for lynch mobs, though.... (my first was a mormon, I hold that memory very dear.... )

No worries. There are plenty of bars and booze. That's just a myth that there is not.

Utah? Nope. Never. Never will. I'm still bitter at them for giving us Mitt Romney.

Really? My friend went there for a ski trip or something, and had a very different story to tell. That's great, though, if what you say is true. :)

Yup. There are bars everywhere. They deem all of the "members only" to get past the law.

Sweet. maybe it was something about regular stores, not buying at certain times, etc.

UTAH STATE-OWNED LIQUOR STORES are the sole dispensers of carry-out liquor, wine and real beer. There are a number of these stores hidden throughout the state. They are closed on Sundays, holidays and other designated times. Lack of competition keeps the selection severely limited. Prices for wine and liquor are fixed with a minimum of 61% mark-up over cost, plus high state taxes. For real beer, the mark-up is 75% plus taxes, making the retail cost of some six-packs well over $10.

They must not have many drunks!

I use to live in Utah and SLC is very pretty. Hogle Zoo is fun if you are into alot of walking around for a few hours. Hubby and I took our kids there when they were little and we had a lot of fun. There are places to go party and have a drink too. SLC is probably not as LDS as some would think anymore. They even have fun things like Rocky Horror Picture Shows complete with crazy audiences and yes, a few LDS do show up dressed up too.

Park City is cool place to visit. Can be expensive but they do have some great places for shopping. Also, Temple Square is nice and people are very friendly and it is an interesting place to see. You can go to the Tabernacle and hear the choir practicing but not into the Temple. They have a great Visitor's Center. The malls are really nice and a great place to eat and have a beer is the Bohemian Brewery. If you are into seeing celebrities, Orem and Provo has Osmonds everywhere including Donny and Marie  Robert Redford can be seen sometimes in Orem and Provo since he lives up in Sundance.

It's about the last place I'd mention to visit. Although I've never been. My last job was headquartered there and my ex boss goes out there every so often and he HATES it. He is also gay and fabulous and likes the drinkie drinkie. But, yeah, to drink out you have to become a "member", it is so odd. My friends visited the temple and said it was wild to see. I'll ask Mike if he has any recommendations and pass along.

I've been to Salt Lake City a few times and did the whole Temple Square thing, and actually had a good time. Regardless of how religious you are (I'm not), the Temple is really amazing to see.

It's really not all that bad Curtis.

I'm from Utah ~ born and raised and still here. :) And I'm not a Mormon, and I have a drink whenever I want (Long Island Iced Teas and Jack Daniels with Coke are some of my favourites!). The liquor laws are a bit odd ~ you can't have more than one alcoholic drink in front of you at the same time ~ but don't hold it against all of us...we didn't make the law, and we're not fond of it, either. :) Your trip to Salt Lake will not be a horrible one, if you don't want it to be ~ there is plenty to see. Up by the Capitol is so pretty ~ lots of history there. The University of Utah is nearby; a wonderful campus, and the Hogle Zoo is nearby as well, as was mentioned before. There are some crime and gang problems, in certain areas, like most big cities...but it's not a bad place to visit. If you didn't see the Temples here and there, you'd forget you were even in Mormon country...and I think the Temples are pretty to look at, no matter what your faith. The Mormons don't jump out and grab you, and force you to come inside. :p Have a good time on your trip!
