View Full Version : Underrated Albums

So this is a bit of a spinoff of Dissention's thread... Which albums do you find underrated? I'm talking stuff like OSOTM, Heroes Are Hard to Find, the bastard red-headed stepchild that is the second album... etc. Albums you love but they don't get the love they deserve, or hated albums you love. Including but not limited to Fleetwood Mac.

Here's some of mine -

Blondie - Plastic Letters
U2 - October
The Pretenders - Viva El Amor
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peepshow (any SATB, really)
No Doubt - The Beacon Street Collection
Garbage - BeautifulGarbage
Stevie - OSOTM
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You're Gonna Get It!
FM - Mirage

Just out of boredom. We have no work to do today in school, and yet they make us come in. Wtf.

U2 - October

I totally agree. Might as well stick Boy in there too.

Talking Heads - Little Creatures
Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door (everyone always says how it wasn't as good as the earlier ones...I think it's just as good or better  )
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (Of course :p )
Pink Floyd - Animals (For some reason, never really gets the attention that WYWH, DSOTM and The Wall get)

Marilyn Manson- Mechanical Animals
MC5- Back in the USA
Morrissey- Your Arsenal

The Pretenders - Viva El Amor
Stevie - OSOTM
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You're Gonna Get It!
FM - Mirage

When it comes to music, I don't really think along the lines of underrated albums - I usually think in terms of underrated artists, so this thread is a bit difficult for me. It would take a great deal of thought to come up with a list of my own.

Of those you've mentioned-
As much as I love the Pretenders, I wasn't particularly impressed with "Viva El Amor" none of the tracks really stood out to me and I didn't find the album particularly memorable.
"Other Side of the Mirror" - I am of the not so popular opinion that Stevie's solo career started great and then went progressively downhill with each new album. This one, being the fourth solo release, is no exception.
"You're Gonna Get It" - I suppose this one is a little underrated and tends to get lost in the shadow of the album that followed it, "Damn the Torpedoes," but when I think of underrated Petty, I usually think "Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)" - which tends to be ignored because it is stylistically very different from anything else Petty has done.
"Mirage" - I'm sorry but I really can't stand this album. It's reheated Rumours but without the magic. Don't get me wrong, I like "Gypsy," "Hold Me" and some of the others, but as a whole I just don't like it.

That's actually my favourite Beatles album.

Mine too! A lot of it is sentimental, for me. I remember my dad picking me up and dancing with me to Let It Be when I was a kid, and my grandma used to do this great, hilarious dance whenever "Get Back" would come on- her name was Loretta, and she loved bopping around whenever they'd sing "Get back, Loretta!"

It's a great album.

Yeah, at least in Bowie circles. I don't understand the dislike for it one bit, it truly is one of his best albums. It doesn't get much better than Sunday and Heathen (The Rays) in terms of Bowie.

Well the Pixies rawk! So cool Bowie covered that song.

Heathen wasn't underrated here in the UK. It was even nominated for the Mercury Music award in 2002.
He was beaten by Ms Dynamite that year I think.

You know I actually really like the Hours album. I totally love the track Thursday's Child and Seven and Survive are pretty good too.
The one I've never liked is Earthling. I just didn't get Bowie doing the jungle/dance thing. I like I'm Afraid Of Americans (great lyrics) but the rest I can't take to.
The only other Bowie albums to get a thumbs down from me are Tonight (apart from Blue Jean and Loving The Alien) and Never Let Me Down (no redeeming tracks at all!).

I do love Bowie though, I even like the first Tin Machine album!

Some of the albums that you guys are posting are surprising to me. A lot of them aren't underrated at all. U2? Seriously? Do they have a single underrated record? I have no time for U2 but almost everyone else on the planet thinks they're still brilliant. I think after Zooropa, they fell apart. A lot of people thought Zooropa stunk, but I liked it.

My underrated albums are:
Sarah Slean- Day One
Jane Siberry - Maria
Those are the only two I have disagreed with the critics on

Overrated albums are :
Morrissey - You Are the Quarry (critics loved this one. I think it's a good album but half of it is skip-worthy)
Radiohead - everything after Kid A. I think they have been stuck in a routine since Kid A. Their music has lost its magic in my mind
Bjork - Medula. I was really excited about the release of this record, but it was such a let down for me. The critics were peeing themselves over it but I find it a very difficult album to listen to.

That's all I got right now.

To Be Honest, I beleive Bowies worst album was Space oddity..I really dont go for the whole Mammas and Poppas thing.

Plus why the albums from Outside to Relaity, really is udneratted is because, Bowie messed up when he did his lovely Tin Machine movement which I guess lsot his fans, but Never Let me Down and Black Tie White Nose..sort of let younger fans leave. Its sad becuase he seems to be coming back with bigger and better stuff. If he does a new album, i hope it is oriented like Low or Lodgher was. Who knows.

As for other choices for underrated albums, Is Elliott Smith's either/or considered underrated? I've always considered it his best album, by far. I spent high school being so emo to that record before people were emo.

I also like Morrissey's You Are The Quarry quite a bit. It's uneven, but most of his records are. First of the Gang to Die, Irish Blood English Heart, and Let Me Kiss You are great, great songs. The Morrissey album. I know. Some songs are amazing. But a song like All the Lazy Dykes and that crappy Take me back to Camden (is that the title?). Barf!!! The good songs are ridiculously good though. And the new Live At Earls Court is so so good! When he played in Toronto, we went back stage and met all the band. It's cool to see them all in the sleeve of the album. They're super nice guys. Didn't meet Morrissey, but I gripped his hand tight from the front of the stage. Didn't get up to hug him. album ("The Lizard") their hit was the ballad "Love Is On the Way"...But the self-titled disc absolutely smokes that release and 99.9% of the releases from the period when "hair metal" ruled!

Bad thing is that Saigon Kick was wrongly called "hair metal", When their debut disc is a combination of David Bowie type lead vocals, The Beatles backing vocals/instrumentation & a heavy rock/alternative vibe

Just find their debut and if you dont like the second track "What You Say" you may need a brain transplant cause yer brain has gone "buh-bye!"

Have you heard Queen of All the Tarts? I couldn't believe he left that one off of Reality, it would have sounded perfect nestled between New Killer Star and Pablo Picasso. Just like I was shocked that he left Conversation Piece off of Heathen.

Who knows.

I quite like a lot of the Tin Machine material and I *love* Black Tie White Noise. They reissued BTWN about a year ago as a boxed set with the album, a disc of rarities (that weren't all that rare, unfortunately), and the makin-of doc on DVD. Gave me a new appreciation for it. Never Let Me Down was good vocally because he stretched his voice instead of using that low baritone all the time, but gawd, what an atrocious album. I can't wait for a new album. I do wish the tracks from Toy would surface, though.

Ok, trivia time...what's the link (or "degrees of separation") between Tin Machine & Fleetwood Mac?

Oh no! Such hostility! It's not only his unattractiveness that I disliked about him. I found the songs that I heard of his to be a little boring. One of my friends loved him and lent me a record. I wasn't moved. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. The comment definitely had a tone of humour to it. I guess that doesn't come through when it's typed. Oh and by the way, I'm glad he stabbed himself in the chest too! JUST KIDDING!!! Maybe this guy will help to carry the message ------>

I don't care if it was said in jest or not, it's still a extremely stupid comment.

I thought it was funny. Not the stabbing part, the ugly part. But i don't know anything about who you are talking about, so that's probably why I didn't care. But, it's not the first time someone has called a singer/actor/whoever ugly on the ledge...

Exactly. It's like saying, I don't care for Stephen King's books because he's not nice on the eye. What difference does it make? It's not like he's an actor.
And he did mean it, because he later clarified his statement by saying that it was not only that he was ugly but also that he was boring.
Anyway, whatever, I'm out of this argument now.

I wouldnt call Elliot Smith ugly, but everyone has their opinion. I want to be a singer/songwriter, but i really dont need people looking at my looks, cause then i wont have any fans lol. Either way, he was a good artist.

Funny that a little statement about someone being ugly can start something. So, if I say I'll tapdance on the Pope's grave when he dies, are you going to flip out too? I AM TOTALLY KIDDING ABOUT THAT BY THE WAY. I was raised catholic, and though I hate all the Catholic church stands for, I still think it is very sad that he is dying. It's sad to see anyone deteriorate like that. The whole Schaivo fiasco nearly killed me. It was so sad, though she was in all probability unaware of what was happening to her, knowing what she was going through.

I have this sort of thing with musicians. I have to be somewhat attracted to them to really appreciate them to their fullest. I know it's a shallow outlook, but I is what I is. I'll give you that Elliott Smith was talented. I can see that. I don't dig what he did. And I hate to break it to you, but physical beauty seems to matter in the world whether we like it or not. People want to see beautiful people like this guy ------>

Elliott was one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, and his death is a loss to the world. Period. He struggled with an enormous amount of issues- and he's gone now, and it's terribly, terribly sad for people like me who are gigantic fans of his work. You certainly have a right to your opinion- I just think it's a stupid and callous one, especially in light of the fact that he's no longer here.

And it's unfortunate that you earlier intimated that your opinion of his talent is based solely on what he looked like. That's so, so, so shallow. And as much as people bitch about the current state of the music business today, it's statements like that- I can't appreciate their talent or enjoy their music because they're UGLY- that perpetuates the commercial availability of image over talent. So pat yourself on the back for that one.

I'm gonna bust out the Elliott banner I was rocking several months ago, so I hope everyone can stomach looking at considering how ugly he is.

Don't worry, again, some people only think a few people are funny. And you might have to talk in just the right way. But even if you do, it might not matter, cause those people are only nice to people who are already their friends anyway. I'm very proud of you, but why be down on others if they are happy, nice, and like emoticons? I don't get it. Why tell others they are not funny, or not as cool as you? I'm sure lots of people have been through things, but some are cynical, some are not. Neither one is necessarily better. I (Although, I do prefer my good friends way - she's had a heinous life, but she is always smiling, and always nice and friendly to everyone she meets. She sees the good in people, doesn't look for the bad, and only says something less than nice if the person does something really bad, and even then she tries to be respectful). I'm very proud of you, but why be down on others if they are happy, nice, and like emoticons? I don't get it. Why tell others they are not funny, or not as cool as you? I'm sure lots of people have been through things, but some are cynical, some are not. Neither one is necessarily better. (Although, I do prefer my good friends way - she's had a heinous life, but she is always smiling, and always nice and friendly to everyone she meets. She sees the good in people, doesn't look for the bad, and only says something less than nice if the person does something really bad, and even then she tries to be respectful). I dunno, it's very perplexing to me, is what.

Well, thank you. I'm not saying I've had a henious life. I'd do it all over again because I love where I'm at right now. I've always been cynical, and if I see something annoying, yeah, I'm gonna have something sarcastic to say. I'm just a bitch like that.

Have you moshed? So fun, but I haven't been in a heavy one. midlevel mosh was my limit, what with my short size, and limited weight. still - elbows OUT! is fun.... :D

well, it seems strange to make fun of people for using emoticons, and then be mad at someone for making fun of someone's looks. And if you're sarcastic, and a bitch like that, why get mad at all the same for doing the same thing? I honestly don't get it.

Honey, I AM cynical and bitter. That all started back when I was eight years old.

And, don't call me a child. I've been through some stuff that would make your skin crawl in my fourteen years of existence. I know how to get myself through anything. Try being in a group home for a long period of time without anyone to help you cope except your mother for five ****ing minutes per day. Try doing that without killing yourself. I've done it. Those experiences made me mature and strong. Say whatever the hell you want. I'll take it.

I'm sorry if you've had a troubled childhood and it's good that you are strong enough to get through thingsbut what makes you so special?

Hundreds of thousands of children have much harder things to deal with yet remain content in the knowledge that it's either not going to be like that forever or there is somebody worse off than them.. Stop the self pity and get a f**kin' grip. ;)

I have to admit I've never moshed or crowd surfed. I'm too delicate for all that.
I have, however, stood at the front at many a concert and been squashed, elbowed and almost had my hair pulled out!
Now I get annoyed when people even push me a little at concerts.
I'm getting old
I remember having the most evil purple/red bruise from an Alice In Chains concert once and being so proud hehe

-_-. That's the point. Emoticons bug the **** out of me, so I make fun of them. I've been teased for my looks throughout my adolescence. And I'm actually really pretty, not to toot my own horn. I hate it when people put others down for their looks. It's one of the cruelest things for people to go through. Think how you'd feel if someone called you a dog or something. You wouldn't be happy. It hurts to see it happen to others when you've experienced it yourself.

And I'm not getting mad. I'm biting back.

Well, maybe all the same likes to use emoticons, and it bugs him when you make fun of them. Do you not see how, possibly, what you are doing may be something you don't like other people to do? The point is, you are making fun of people for things, he is making fun of people for things. Glass houses, throwing stones, and all that. And, no, I don't usually love it when people make fun of people's looks, but it's going to happen. I just try not to do it myself. I mean, Dissention does it quite a bit, never heard you say anything to him.

Uh, HUH?

At what point in Kate's post was she in any way self-pitying or asking for sympathy from any of you? All she did was point out things that she's gone through that has made her more mature than your average 14 year old- which she is.

In fact, in a post ABOVE yours, she even said this:

I'd do it all over again because I love where I'm at right now.

To me, that in no way implies that she's getting Woe-Is-Me on anyone's ass and is in fact trying to deflect any sympathy that might BE coming her way.

That was so unnecessary.

How do you define what is mature or not for 14?

No, the fact that her childhood was even mentioned implies self pity. Why bring it up unless you are trying to justify something? I've had tough things happen in my life, I have close friends who have gone through almost unimaginable grief in childhood but I don't feel the need to point it out in public on a forum. Maybe it's for sympathy then? I don't know

Of course she would do it again, it's more than likely been character building and given her a stronger outlook and opinions but then if you haven't had a childhood any other way how would you know a different way to grow up?

Most of the last 3 pages has been unecessary in my opinion..

Kate never ONCE brought up her childhood. all the same did, by loudly bitching that he was arguing with "a child." She was simply responding to what was an idiotic statement from HIM, and a stupid assumption that she was unworthy of having discourse with, upon seeing her birth year.

Amber, there's a difference between criticizing the use of emoticons, which are COMMONLY considered a blight of the Internet, and criticizing a much-respected artist's music (who died tragicially young, and it's STILL undetermined whether it was a suicide or murder) because the poster thinks he's UGLY.

Yes but by stating he was arguing with a child was he not correct? Whatever his intention or your interpretation of his statement it was factually correct. Or am I wrong?

14 is still classed as a minor in the USA is it not?

My original argument was basically defense of my character, because all_the_same called me a child, a remark I find offensive, personally, because to me, it means immature. Everyone thinks I'm some hard-assed bitch. You know WHY I'm such a hardass? It's because I went through stuff like that. It built up my character. I only said what I said because of a remark that offended me, and I wanted to defend myself, and my maturity level.

Please. I've heard countless people on this board, y'all included, make fun of people cause they were ugly, or you thought their clothes were ugly (a personal pet peeve of mine) or whatever snarky, arbitrary thing y'all decided to come up with. Apparently because you are the coolest people in the world. No, it wasn't in the best taste, but calling someone ugly (especially if you think they are ugly) is hardly a capital crime. Come back to me with that the next time you morph into someone who is always nice, always says good things about people, and never criticizes anyone. OK?

Being called a child to me does not mean being called immature though. I work with people between the ages of 16 and 61 and to be quite honest the 16 year old girl I work with is totally capable of holding a conversation at a mature level with anybody. She is still a child in my country however..
