Okay, this has probably been posted already too, but perhaps you feel like beating a dead horse?

Worst Stevie Lyrics:

"I remember him
He was very young
No one spoke like him
He was someone"

I nearly barf every time I hear those words. And the fact that she OPENS the Trouble in Shangri-La album with that kills me!

Another one that drives me crazy is...
"Love is very powerful"

Stevie? Seriously? You can do better than that! I do love that woman though!

Really? I <3 those lyrics.....reminds me of a boy I once dated.

I dislike:

-"Children of the world, the forgotten chimpanzee"

-Desert Angel...the whole damn song

-"I want to fly through the world in a golden ball"

-TMMS chorus

She started a whole album with
"you can ride high atop your pony,
i know you won't fall,
cuz the whole thing's phony"
..............what a silly word to rhyme with pony

yup! The fact that she integrated the word chimpanzee into a song is pretty awful! I don't know. I'm still not a fan of "I remember him, he was very young..." It just doesn't have a good flow to it. Sounds awkward.

Another doozie is:

"It hurts my self esteem. It hurts my everything. I am reeling. Ooh, it hurts my feelings!"

Barffffff!!!

Another one I love. But when it comes to me, I love everything Stevie writes (expect Desert Angel  )....

"I am a cliff dweller, from the old school" is fairly bad, but it fits so well into the song that I have grown to love that line! :D

There's a line from ghosts that I don't make any sense out of:
of course I looked it up, and I was singing it wrong for years...that always happens-- you sing whatever lyrics you thing she's saying, although....

To feel the empty spaces she's feeling
She depends on her music like a husband

Makes little sense...why feel what she's already feeling?

"I want to fly through the world in a golden ball"

I want to FLY through the world in a golden ball, many of the cities I never saw at all...how could you hate those lines? Oh well, to each his own.

Actually an interesting side note, I was watching an AOL interview with the lead singer and the drummer of The Killers, and Brandon (Brendon?) Flowers, the lead singer, said that he didn't like not being able to see more of the cities because they're too busy setting up and then getting ready to leave. These Sweet Girl lines popped in my head right away.

Back on track, I agree with "It hurts my self esteem. It hurts my everything. I am reeling. Ooh, it hurts my feelings," which all_the_same mentioned, as the worst lyrics Stevie has written. Also, on the Fall from Grace demo, I love the verse that goes "Falling down a crystal ball into crystal stairs, I'm doing the same things over and over..." but then ends the verse with "Going in for repairs." Ugh.

"Begins to begin" is one of my favourite phrases in all her songs. Not crazy about the wolf on the run, but I like the imagery. It's like the "fast like a jet plane and then fast like a star stream" - I like how she uses repetition in her phrasing.

She started a whole album with
"you can ride high atop your pony,
i know you won't fall,
cuz the whole thing's phony"
..............what a silly word to rhyme with pony
Another verse that I happen to love! It's not the fact that those two words happen to rhyme but what that verse implies.

Yeah, I like it a lot too. Of course, I think that song is perfection, so...

Phony's kind of an odd word, one you don't hear much anymore, maybe that's what bugs people?

Except for Sandy in Grease, that is "you're a fake and a phony and I wish I'd never laid eyes on you!" *throws pompoms on the ground & stalks off* :p

Even though I love The Blue Lamp (and make no mistake, I do LOVE this song) I find it a bit odd that she wrote a whole song about a lamp. I mean...it's a lamp...come on. Lamps are not interesting, they're not romantic, and I don't care if it's a Tiffany lamp, it's downright silly. Not to diss Stevie or anything but the lamp inspiration has always struck me as a bit strange.

I hate to say it because I totally sing this with my friend Rachel constantly but...

I like the coastal cities,
I like the lights,
I like the way the city blends into the ocean at night,
It's like living on a working river,
The coast line is glittering,
Like a diamond snake in a black sky
Ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhh (Lindsey hauntingly sings that part)

I love this part. I think it's aces.

Her strong vocal, the harmonies, the power of that song & the rest of the lyrics override those little teeny tiny problems for me. ;)

Besides, I tie the "face becomes thin" line to the earlier "the woman is so tired so the woman disappears" part. It's so sad.

"unbraid with all the love that you have like a soft silver chain" I don't like to envision long, gray hair being braided and unbraided in a song. Doesn't sit right with me somehow.

Or, "don't hide behind your hair, it's a bit of gold and braid" (yet another braid reference) great song, silly phrase....

"in your finery hey, hey" the use of the word "finery" is utterly hilarious to me.

"sunflowers and your face fascinate me." sorry, but this makes me laugh every time.

Quiet now, songbird, just for one night
Well, I know that you love to sing
Oh, baby, well I know that you love to write

Dissention mentioned "Night Gallery", which is just horrible. The Nicksfix Lori question about "Why didn't you stop Stevie from taking drugs?" Well, the answer should be apparant from "Night Gallery" and others like it- the reason Lori didn't stop Stevie from doing drugs is because she was doing them right along with her. DUH!

There have been some doozies listed, this is my biggest stinker:

"And as all this comes to an end
So go the lilies of the valley
From this hour on
Brilliant is your danger
Darker than the image on the wall
Is the fear of it all"

"Ooh, sometimes your frightened
And you don't know why
There's been a few things
Well, I know you really loved a lot
And then one day
In your bright blue sky
Well, I never did say why to you...
Why... You must know...
He said No not really"

"Memories fade like the wind
Oh, and she says
No, this will never come again
He says, Oh well... who can tell?
She says...I think you walk a thin line
Walk a thin line
She said you must know
He said No not really..."

"Then there are the things,
Misunderstandings...
Well I know that there's a few things
That you really loved a lot...
I know, in spite of what you say,
One thing that I really wanted,
I really wanted you...
This will leave you
Haunted in your mirror"

At least "Silver Girl" is coherant and tells a story that most people can figure out. Whereas-

THey (the words) do tell a story, (Silver Girl) but they are much uglier and stupider - The song you posted sounds coherent and pretty within itself, to me. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like, "like a diamond snake in a black sky". I mean, wouldn't it be "like a diamond encrusted snake"? That sounds even worse. What the hell is a "diamond snake"?
The coastline is glittering like a diamond snake in a black sky. She's talking about the view of looking down at the earth at night and seeing the lights of civilization- it looks like a "diamond snake".

I think it's pretty good imagery. My only problem with these lyrics is that she used them in "Destiny Rules". That was lame.

It occurs to me that, for Stevie, this really isn't that bad. I've never heard it sung, though, so maybe that makes it worse...It certainly holds no candle to: "You're a frontliner...you put it all on the li-hine.......OOO and your consistent....HEY, and that's good....etc." To me, those lyrics are near the pentultimate of badness. The one you posted also couldn't touch the flaming crap bomb that is Silver Girl. IMO.

I've wondered if that's why she cut it from the album, because she recognized it was incoherent. Or maybe it was because it sounded almost exactly like that Risky Business song (train scene). Maybe she ripped it off and remembered Waddy saying "don't ever do that again" regarding lifting the Edge riff from a Police album. I've always wanted to know why she cut Mirror.

She supposedly didn't the like the way it came out. And after hearing it, I agree. But she probably loves her inane lyrics in that mess, while I happen to think those are the journal pages that she should have housetrained her doggies with.

Maybe she was smart enough to realize how much the song sucks...... Nahhhh. Actually, I recall her saying somewhere that it was the planned title track for what became TOSOTM. You know how she is with her title tracks songs ("they've gotta be killer"). Perhaps, she thought it was good but a little to sucky to be a title track. I think it's too sucky to be a B side from Street Angel.

P.S.: "Paper Doll" sucks ass, too!! UGH!!!! ( :p Amber)

At least "Silver Girl" is coherant and tells a story that most people can figure out. Whereas-

"And as all this comes to an end
So go the lilies of the valley"

and

"Then there are the things,
Misunderstandings...
Well I know that there's a few things
That you really loved a lot..."

make absolutely no sense whatsoever. I really do think that this song was a complete cut and paste scrapbook job from journals. Just like that other piece of **** "The Nightmare". PUKE!

On the other hand.....

"Bella Donna" is sheer greatness. I happen to like "Thousand Days". "Sister Honey" is kinda  .

I hafta agree with you there. Hello Stevie?!?!? Rivers end in the sea- remember "Crystal"????

Oy.

I love many of the lyrics that have been mentioned. A river can totally be neverending for me and I see diamond snakes in black skies quote often (No, I'm not on anything  ). :] This made me laugh...and laugh! Hi, fellow Oregonian! I'm in NE Portland, where are you?

I guess lyrics are a subjective thing. The things that make me cringe most are when Stevie switches from first, to second, to third person --all in the same verse. I don't even think she realizes it. It makes her "messages" less understandable and hard to follow. Also, when she butchers language rules (granted it's acceptable to certain extent in music). But this one bothers me:

"The earth and the sea and the sky....IS at rest with the ocean."
Why couldn't she just say "ARE" ?

GateandGarden
03-21-2005, 09:28 PM
In the realm of demos...

I love "Belle Fleur" and it puts me in this incomparable dreamy kind of mood, but I always thought the first verse came off as silly and elementary-

"Men and women
Livin' in the canyon
Indian dancing
All night long
They form a circle
Hand in hand"

And "Something Exquisite" is another demo that I like, but I just think this part is laughable and the inclusion of "ever" makes it worse-

"If you do not run the race
Then you cannot win it (ever)
How will you know if you do not do it (if you do not run it)"

When you wear nylons, do you, like, bunch it up or roll it with a safety pin to hold it in place? Do you have any idea how funny the thought of a tiny leg is to me? I'm practically pissing myself over here! :blob1: <---like this guy!

Actually, for SYW and TISL, I came up to PDX and took my syster and niece to the shows. During the SYW show, my niece, who is a die hard 17 year old punk rocker, kept saying during Lindsey's songs, "Isn't this guy done yet ? I came here to see Stevie." I take no responsibility for that !

I think that's tied with how much of "Thousand Days" is borrowed..no, STOLEN from "Whole Lotta Trouble." I think "WLT" is a much better song, but that's me.
Actually, I believe that "Thousand Days" was written before "Whole Lotta Trouble". WLT was written during the Tom Petty/Bob Dylan Australia tour and I think 1000 Days is from 1984 and the RAL sessions.

That and the fact that this line-

"But I like some kind of TIME/LIFE edition,
Tradition, competition...
Being the only thing that I really have to remember
The great singers and the great players"

appears on the back cover or RAL.

Didn't she incorporate the "great singers/great players" line into "Has Anyone Ever Written...." at the end of the song at some point? For some reason, I'm remembering it.

too many quotes to quote, so here goes:

"unbraid with all the love that you have, like a soft silver chain"
personally, love the song and the imagery. my (ex)boyfriend used to braid my hair at night before bed when it was reeeeeally long so we wouldn't get tangled in it. it was such a beautiful and romantic gesture, i love that memory.

"the coastline is glittering like a diamond snake in a black sky"
from out at sea, when you look back at the city lights, with the reflection, it totally looks like, well i don't know if i would have called it a 'diamond snake,' but it could.

"yesterday i was fascinated by somebody else"
i love this lyric, very singable.

how about Rock A Little? that song is garbage. i love stevie, and i will defend her (occasionally ridiculous) lyrics, but RAL crosses lines that even Silver Girl and WTTR...Sara don't come close to. maybe it's the vocals that KILL the song for me. oh wait, add Desert Angel to the inner sanctum of crap. almost forgot.

As much as I love Rhiannon, when she sings it live and says "Will you ever win? Wellllllll... I don't think you do!", that is a change of tense and it really isn't particularly good writing. But holy crap! Does it ever sound good! Listened to Rhiannon from the Rosebud Film and Live at the House of Blues in 1994 tonight. Nearly had a stoke they were both so good!

Stevie is not the most intelligent writer, but she is a very emotionally vested writer. Her songs are like children to her; children who belong in the special needs classes.

I've learned to gloss over the inexplicable change of tenses, awkward phrases, odd or pedestrian word choices, over reliance on iterations, incomprehensible and oblique references, etc. I still find enjoyment in her music, including her most questionable songs and lyrics, especially if I don't analyze them too much.

I think one of her issues is her ego. Because she has so much conviction in what she writes, she doesn't edit herself; everything is too precious. And while I believe she has an artistic intelligence, I can't expect her to be cohesive writer. Just listen to the disjointed way in which she speaks; it's the same way she writes.

Rock music gives writers an allowance to twist and mangle language/syntax to a certain extent. Stevie, without even realizing it, takes full liberty of that allowance.
There is no one like Stevie, and this is one of the many reasons why.

To counter this thread, perhaps we should start a thread on lyrics, verses and phrases that highlight her brightest lyrical moments.

"It's just like a river, it's never ending" is pretty bad, as is the "you can't have him" stuff in EFO.

Ok, you selecting this is really baffling. Stevie is talking about the grief caused by 9/11, comparing it to a river, which, since it has no obvious beginning or end, "doesn't end."

Frankly I think "it's just like a river, it's never ending" is on par with U2's line "stuck in a moment you can't get out of"....both talk about the continuing reverbations of the 9/11 tragedy.

Isn't the line actually "to fill the empty spaces she's feeling"?

Even though I love The Blue Lamp (and make no mistake, I do LOVE this song) I find it a bit odd that she wrote a whole song about a lamp. I mean...it's a lamp...come on. Lamps are not interesting, they're not romantic, and I don't care if it's a Tiffany lamp, it's downright silly. Not to diss Stevie or anything but the lamp inspiration has always struck me as a bit strange.

If you take it THAT literally, my guess is you basically don't really get the song. The imagery is a blue lamp but obviously the song is actually about a breakup from someone, not a song about a lamp.

How's about the entire song Thousand Days? It makes me embarrassed.

Quiet now, songbird, just for one night
Well, I know that you love to sing
Oh, baby, well I know that you love to write
Well, you live by the light of the moon
I live by the light of desire
Oooh, says words to her over the phone
Just how many people are there with you now?

That song made question whether or not she was nucking futs.

So - you clearly don't know "Thousand Days" is about her friendship with Prince. What's crazy about about this lyric? I think it's pretty obvious that its in essence a translated conversation between her and Prince: "you love to sing", "you love to write", "you live by the light of the moon, I live by the light of desire". "Just how many people are there with you now?" probably was a direct quote of Prince, since he sometimes criticized her indulgent lifestyle.

I've found this thread baffling because most of the quoted lyrics actually aren't bad or embarrassing, and some of them are actually very good! It's confusing to me to see Nicks fans posting that seem to think everything she writes is trite.

I've always figured Nicks lyrics are wordy and vague snapshots of what was happening in her life at the time. If you don't have the context, as most of the time we don't, I can see that sometimes they'd be baffling if you were trying to read them as being literal. So she's often verbose and not totally clear, but that doesn't mean she's bad.....somehow people still connect to her songs even though they're really basically personal mythology from her life.

The only lyrics of hers that I dislike (and not saying they are bad lyrics, just that I don't personally like them) are where she ties a song way too closely to a particular event/time. "Desert Angel" doesn't work for me because it's too specific. "Illume" and "Soldier's Angel" are better because the lyrics are disassociated enough to make them more universal. I can listen to the latter two anytime and connect with the loss and tragedy they are communicating; I listen to "Desert Angel" and the shout outs to "Operation Desert Angel!" at the end just totally blows it for me.

And many of her lines are really great:

He was singing, and undoing the laces...undoing the laces "Sara"
To survive the distance everyone fights...everyone fights...and the fire flies "Fireflies"
I've shaken your faith in me...No, you've shaken my faith in everything else "Thrown Down"
Must secret loves secretly die? "Secret Love"
Long nets of white cloud my memory "Rooms On Fire" (startling, when you consider she was basically subconsciously reflecting on what Klonopin was doing to her before she consciously realized it!)

I agree with a lot of this. I think Nicks is something of an "Id" type writer....there's a lot of emotion coming out in her writing, and it can *seem* at first glance to be incomprehensible.

But let's take Lindsey's criticism of the verses in "Thrown Down". The first verse is third person, the second verse shifts to first person. It doesn't throw me off at all, because the effect (to me) is that Nicks basically steps closer to the listener and gets more personal in the second verse. In the first verse she's observing from a distance - "this happened, that happened", in the second verse she's confronting Lindsey directly. It would actually have detracted from the song to put all the verses in the same tense - Nicks' artistry comes through on it.

One song that I don't get, again not saying it's bad just that I don't understand it, is "Two Kinds of Love".

I've never understood from the song exactly what the "two kinds of love" actually are.....unless the line "estranged from each other for their very survival" is a hint. She says "the two of us...widow and the dove" so I think it's another "conversation I had with Prince" song, but this entire section:

Ooh the two of us
Estranged sometimes for their very survival
Outraged at each other
Engaged to each other in their hearts
but they live apart

...makes me think it has to be about Lindsey. So basically, a song relaying a conversation she had with Prince that included talking about her relationship with Lindsey. But I'm still not following what the "Two Kinds of Love" are.

"Touched By An Angel" has the cringe worthy..."Everything was the same, except that everything was different." I can understand where she's coming from, and I get what she's trying to say, but it just doesn't work, some how.

yes that's the line.

Although the song overall is a bit of a mess, I've always found it to be such a great insight into where she was in her life at the time… recalling all her romances and affairs and yet still ending up alone

to fill the empty spaces she's feeling
she depends on her music like a husband
and she knows it's not good to fall in love again
one day they were lovers
one day they were friends
and there was nothing else to say

It's hard to know where their career would be right now, had the political backlash never happened. I remember that overnight my radio station went from playing 2 Dixie Chicks songs an hour to playing NONE. It was more unsettling to me than if they'd started burning books at my local libraries.

Stevie once said in an interview that Two Kinds of Love means the sexual vs. the soulful, compassionate love that people feel for each other.
"One for the way you walk" - the sexual /checking out the bod things like the swaying hips or a certain bounce a person might have.

"One for the way you love me" - like holding someone's hand while they're crying or gently sweeping the hair back from someone's face or wiping a single tear from they're face in times of distress.

My take on "widow and dove" is basically War and Peace.Widow: A black widow spider kills her "partner" immediately after mating with them - WAR.Stevie has said that she and Lindsey were very passionate but that was IT.They were ready to kill each other after that.

Dove: signifies peace, harmony, and soulful love - compassion, not passion =PEACE.:xoxo::angel:

"They run from the one who hunts them, They drop to the forest floor...frozen" I hate the lyrical changes she made to this song. The obvious references to that horrible movie is clunky and takes away a little bit from what was a great song.

"Well the conversation rings inside my head, Well you know me better than I know myself, Can you write this for me? He says no you write your songs yourself"......Why is this the chorus? it's not an embarrassing line you can just ignore, it's repeated throughout the whole song lol

"So she stares at the stairs, ooh there are many things to stare at these days" LOL
