Sofia Coppola films "Marie-Antoinette" at Versailles (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050314/ennew_afp/afplifestylefilmfrance_050314171845)

PARIS - US director Sofia Coppola was due to begin filming scenes of "Marie-Antoinette", her biopic about the Austrian teen who became queen of France, inside the lavish Versailles palace, producers said.

Coppola, who took home an Oscar last year for best original screenplay for "Lost in Translation", has also written the screenplay for her latest effort, loosely based on Antonia Fraser's book "Marie-Antoinette: The Journey".

Kirsten Dunst -- the 22-year-old US actress who shot to fame as the girl who kissed Brad Pitt in "Interview with the Vampire" and recently starred in the popular "Spiderman" movies -- will portray the teenage French queen.

Dunst has already worked with the 33-year-old Coppola on "The Virgin Suicides", released in 1999.

Jason Schwartzman, Coppola's cousin who is best known for his role in Wes Anderson's quirky "Rushmore", will play her husband King Louis XVI, while Rip Torn will play Louis XV, after French actor Alain Delon turned down the role.

Coppola's set at the Versailles palace outside Paris -- where Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette actually lived -- is closed to the press, the popular French daily Le Parisien reported.

Filming, which began last week, is expected to last 11 weeks. The entire shoot will take place in France.

Marie-Antoinette was beheaded in 1793, during the French Revolution.

Thanks for that last bit, yahoo news  Okay, I absolutely LOVE historical pieces. However, this cast? Are you serious? I love Jason Schwartzman and I do think he's a good actor. However, to portray the King of France? And Rip Torn? Kirsten Dunst?? Hell, the last really outstanding film she starred in was Interview With A Vampire and she was what, 10?

I'm not sure i'm as stoked about this now that I know who is in the film

Yes, but Marianne Faithfull and JUDY DAVIS are starring in it, too. Anything with Judy Davis is watchable. And I've always liked Rip Torn in the right roles.

I'm not crazy about Dunst (she's also going to play Jean Seaberg in a new movie  ), but who knows. Schwartzman is very hit-or-miss with me. For every fabulous Huckabees or Rushmore, he has a Spun. *shudder*

That crazy bitch Asia Argento is in it, too.

Asia Argento. +25. Kirsten Dunst has suprised me with her depth and skill in some roles. It's easy for me to dismiss her, but I've seen evidence that she has something special, as well. I'm reserving judgement on her performance till I see it. I think she'll be good as Seberg. The rest of the cast does seem odd, but, truly, Judy Davis will be an amazing addition.

Judy Davis is a brilliant actress so yes, I am glad to see her name in the cast list. I also see Molly Shannon in here  Schwartzman fairs best in the satirical roles, IMO. He was excellent in Rushmore but i'm just trying to picture him in this film and I can't do it. Perhaps someone else backed out of the role so she was like, hey, i'll get my cousin. Maybe with costuming and whatnot he'll be good. The problem I have with films like this is that some of her characters will probably speak French while others (more than likely Dunst and Schwartzman) will not. If she's smart, no one will at all.

In other news...i'm glad Kate Beckinsale is NOT playing Sophie Neveu in The DaVinci Code. It's set to be Audrey Tautou and Tom Hanks

Asia Argento is a ****ing loon, but I dig her.

Personally, I think Julie Delpy would be an amazing Seberg. I've thought so ever since I read they were making a movie about her.

And Judy Davis is a goddess. She's in a class all her own. Hopefully it nabs her an Oscar finally.

What? Wait, I'm starting to see. You think Julie Delpy should be in every movie. I wouldn't want her in that, she doesn't look enough like Seberg, and, after all, Seberg was American. Nope, I would have to pick Kirsten in this case. :)

I'm a little concerned with Coppola doing this. She's not exactly a "big" moviemaker, she's only done small independent movies. It will be exciting to see how she handles this, that's for sure. I think it will turn out magnificent, though.

Don't know what to make of Molly Shannon, but she was in that stupid show with Schwartzman, so maybe that's how she nabbed the role.

-_-

Audrey can bite my ass. That's another role I thought of Julie Delpy for, goddammit.

Yeah, but Jude Law is British and he can pull off an American perfectly. Gwyneth is American and she can pull off a Brit perfectly. All you need is an accent. I'm not concerned with looks because I don't think Dunst looks a thing like her, I just want a great movie. I pray that it isn't watered-down garbage and that they actually show some of the outrageous stuff like her press conference where she propped up her dead baby to prove it wasn't black.

My thoughts exactly. You know she'll make this turn out into a beautiful film (at the very least, artistically). I'm wondering what the angle is going to be--picking out elements from her entire life up until her death? Just their relationship?

AND TAKE THAT BACK ABOUT TAUTOU!!%!#$!@$

I still think Dunst will be good, and wouldn't want to see Delpy do it. :) :wavey: However, I, too, am hoping they don't gloss anything over or water anything down.

For some reason, I get the feeling that she won't show her death. I don't think a beheading is Coppola's style. I just want it to be good because she's fabulous.

Did you ever see Luc Besson's version of Joan of Arc? That sucker was torn to shreds when it came out, but I thought it was rather brilliant in spots.

Never. Dirty Pretty Things was a wretched piece of ****. I want a refund so badly that I can taste it.

Dunst isn't a bad actress, don't get me wrong, I'm just a little put-off because she hasn't shown much of range in her acting and this would be quite a difficult role. If she can pull it off, more power to her.

It'll probably end with her riding in the back of the cart with people hurling insults and spitting on her. She'll put her head inside of the guillotine and then the screen will fade to black. That's what i'm thinking

Yes, I did see the version and I will agree, it had its moments. I will also agree to Dirty Pretty Things being horrible. It is my least favorite Tautou movie with a ****ty ending. Luckily, I rented it

Fair point. But I think she's shown range in small flashes of brilliance that she brings to otherwise...well, not plain roles, but roles where you don't expect them. And, she is a good comedienne, which won't apply to Seberg, of course, but...anyway, I see a little more in her. Biopics are difficult, though, even the very best actresses can stumble, so I hope she pulls it off, too. I do think she will look cute in "the haircut"

My sister had a tiny part in a film with Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis. She said Geoffrey Rush was such a pleasure, chatting with her and preparing with her, and that Judy Davis was the biggest bitch she'd encountered. Now I find it hard to watch her. I guess it shouldn't matter but the way she described her was in no way complimentary, to the point of revulsion. Whatever, she's a good actor.

I wasn't aware your sister was an actor. I'm guessing creativity runs in your family somewhere then? I adore Geoffrey Rush--glad to hear he's a good guy but i'm certainly not surprised about that. That's the only thing I wouldn't enjoy about meeting people. If they are colossal assholes, it sort of changes the way you view them in every aspect.

I've gotten that impression from interviews (which I hear she loathes to give), but I don't care because she's so ****ing brilliant.
