View Full Version : Question about the Street Angel debacle

Today I happened to listen the Off The Record radio special from December 1994. It's very fascinating interview. Stevie is as candid (and livid) as you will ever hear her.

She kept referencing the "English men" who were initially producing the album. She was seething about them; apparently it wasn't a good relationship. Who are they? Are they credited on the album? What other artists have they worked with? She did mention that Thom Panunzio was brought in after the fact, to try to salvage the album. He is listed as co-producer with Stevie.

I love the story she told about her experience touring in a bus ( That was a new experience for her! Being the Street Angel tour, it makes sense though). The bus's fan belt broke while in the middle of nowhere. Stevie and her girls came to the rescue and tied their "tights" together to create a temporary fan belt! I find that story hilarious...Stevie is very resourceful! lol

Glynn Johns was the original producer, if I'm not mistaken.

Yep, and they did NOT get on! Ha! Expected her to come into the studio on time and everything.

Oh my word, that's a howler. I'm on the floor.

PS: Just saw The Ring Two...and thought it was bloody fabulous. Ten times better than the first, you won't be disappointed.

Cool. I'm definitely looking forward to it. It hasn't opened here in the UK yet. The poster and trailer for it are great though.

I was quite worried at the beginning because it was atrocious, but after the first ten minutes, it rocked. They take the storyline in a completely different direction and it really worked. Elizabeth Perkins and Sissy Spacek looked like they were having a blast.

Did you see they've remade The Amityville Horror? I think it's not gonna be good - Ryan Reynolds is in it in for one thing.

Oy, I saw the poster and almost gagged.

The previews they showed before The Ring looked fab, though. Corpse Bride from Tim Burton, some remake of a Japanese horror film with Jennifer Connelly called Dark Water, and Wes Craven's new movie Red Eye (I never thought I'd look forward to a Wes Craven film  ).

It seems that Stevie's big issue with Glyn was that he apparently told her, in no uncertain terms, that Waddy and several of her other regular session men, were not welcome in his studio.
I can see why that wouldn't fly with Stevie.

I *think* she also said that he wanted no percussion on the songs.

Had she been in a better place health-wise and emotionally, she probably would have stood her ground a little better. But she realized her mistake once she kicked the Klonopin, and tried to fix things before the album was released.

His son, Ethan, would probably be a better fit for Stevie though, as you said, Sharon... and his "God's Garden" is pretty beautiful. :D

I thought it was a man singing the first time I heard it. And it never ends; torturous. I do dig Inspiration, though, and think it should have made the album, especially in place of Docklands.

First time I heard it, I actually thought there was something wrong with the disc! But I LOVE her vocal on it, and I love the lyrics. So pretty and moving.
About as close to gospel as I imagine Stevie'd ever come.

I have a feeling that Johns wasn't keen on the idea of working with Stevie Nicks, perhaps took the job as some sort of contractual obligation. He & Stevie apparently didn't have blissful vibes with each other.

The bus's fan belt broke while in the middle of nowhere. Not the middle of nowhere -- it was the Grapevine, the major north-south connection between the San Joaquin Valley & the greater Los Angeles area. It's a stretch of highway about 70 miles long at an elevation of about 4,000 feet. Vehicles overheat from time to time crossing the Grapevine if they have their A/C on. But it's a big freeway that is well patrolled.

Oy, I wondered if she had some low-hangers that I was unaware of.

To be honest, I didn't know what to make of it at first. I think I sat there dumbfounded for a few hours. :o

As for Glyn, I knew he was tough on Stevie and that obviously didn't sit well with her....I really do think it had to be more than him just being "tough" on her though.

After all, she recorded the whole album with him... she didn't fire him. And she mentioned waiting until he was back in England before she dared remix it.

I think she really was intimidated by this guy, for whatever reason, and was afraid to speak her mind. I can only assume it would have been different had she been in a better place emotionally and health-wise.

Yes I agree that Ethan Johns could produce a great album with her. Just listen to what he did for Julianna Raye and for Leona Naess (to me, that's his best production).

I liked the Ring 2 but I still prefer the first one. The first one seemed more mysterious to me cause you didn't know who the girl in the video was whereas the second one was more just trying to get rid of the girl.

I don't know what that chick was thinking back then. To put both "Docklands" and "Unconditional Love" on the album instead of the lovely "Inspiration" was a crime.

I can't attribute it to the Klonopin- if I do, what's to explain "Love Changes" and "That Made Me Stronger"?????

Tsome remake of a Japanese horror film with Jennifer Connelly called Dark Water

Uh...when are American filmmakers going to stop butchering perfectly good Japanese horror films? I'm quite sick of it. The Ring is an exception though. I can't wait to see part II.

Nothing can top Margot Kidder in the orignial Amityville Horror. I'm kind of sad to see that they're re-making it.

Why is that?I don't think Glyn Johns had any affection for Stevie's music or legacy, & that included session cats like Waddy who were part of her circle.

The effect is almost as if Johns had been handed the assignment involuntarily, & said to himself, "If I have to make an album with her that anyone would be interested in buying, it will have to be completely different from her old stuff."

That was his first mistake.

Street Angel was his second. ;)

For some reason, I don't really think Johns did a bad job of producing. I really like the original version of "Maybe Love", and I do like the original "Docklands", but I remember Stevie saying that after he went back to England, she listened to it and said that it just didn't sound like her record. I have a feeling there was probably a rift between Stevie and Glyn, not only professionally, but also personally.
