Hey gang!

After a frustrating fight at Blockbuster b/c none of the movies I wanted were available *or have been for a week* (I heart Huckabees and The Incredibles) I finally joined Netflix... Is it worth it?

****abees! :blob1:

I adore that movie. Was kind of torn on it when I saw it in the theater, but watching it at home on DVD made me like it much more. So funny and *everyone* in it is fantastic, especially Jude Law (who I have such a crush on in Huckabees), Naomi Watts (ditto), and Lily Tomlin.

I loved The Incredibles, too. :D

As for Netflix, I don't like them. They're shady. -_- The more you rent, the slower they're shipped. I've heard that's their policy from someone who works at the shipping center in Worchester, too. I live only miles from the shipping center and it took almost a week to get movies at one point.

Oh, and I hope you get the second disc of extras for Huckabees from Netflix! The production doc is, dare I say, more entertaining the actual movie. Dustin Hoffman will have you rolling on the floor, he's quite eccentric. And the Charlie Rose segment that's on the disc is pretty good, too.

Eh, don't worry. You'll get exemplary service for the trial period because they want to keep you as a customer, dear.

So, what you're saying is don't sleep for the first 2 weeks and enjoy it while it lasts?

I had Netflix for a looong time and never had the problems Diss is talking about, although I know others who have. I have nothing but good things to say about them. I also lived close enough to a distribution center that I'd get my DVDs immediately- I'd send in a movie on a Monday morning and have my new one on Wednesday morning.

The best thing about Netflix, for me, was being able to rent TV shows on DVD. Blockbuster and the other chains have terrible selections- they basically carry Sex and the City and 24, and that's like it. I was able to see so much without having to buy them.

 Pretty much. But when you go to cancel after two weeks, they'll offer you another two weeks free, so you really get it free for a month.

I tried Blockbuster and, personally, I like it better than Netflix. It's cheaper they seem to have just as big a selection (the only movie I tried to get that had a waitlist was Black Christmas and Netflix didn't even have it), they're much faster, and you get coupons every month for free rentals, free popcorn, and free soda at the the actual stores. I joined in November and their promotion was a month free plus a free copy of Shrek 2, I couldn't pass it up. :woohoo:

I belong to Blockbuster online and so far I really like it. The service is pretty fast and for some reason they're only charging me $10 per month. I'm not sure if that's their normal price, or a mistake but I'm not complaining. Lately, I've been watching episodes of MST3K.

Is it worth it?I love it! I've had it for about three or four months. Right now I'm on a German expressionism kick, & I'm arguing with the movie buffs on Usenet about whether "Metropolis" & the "Nibelungen" saga constitute true expressionism. I haven't seen them yet, but I maintain they do not because the subjective aspect is absent.

However, they're both in my queue, so I'll find out soon enough.

Oh man, I am loaded with X-Files information for no apparent reason other than I was obsessed. If you have questions while your watching, feel free to direct them to Janet and I

Nip/Tuck....I cannot wait for the next season.

Yup, but it's cheaper and you get more for your money (free in-store rentals, etc.). Unlike Netflix, they don't wait for your DVDs to get back to them at the distribution center before they send out new ones, they have the discs scanned electronically by the postal service and as soon as they're scanned, they send the next ones in your queue.

Oy, tell me about it. I was a wreck when I read that it might not continue, but thank the stars it is. But is it too much to ask that they bring back Sophia Lopez?

So what does everyone think now?

Alex - do you like Netflix?
Diss, are you still happy with Blockbuster?
Anyone else?

I'm debating joining one of them, can't decide which.

I'm still pleased. I only use it for movies that are hard to find and they usually have them, so that's why I've stuck with them.

(Though it took a full two months for me to get Black Christmas.)

Because everything I want to see isn't there. I'd love to watch that Canadian movie Will recommended and I've been after Solomon Northup's Odyssey for awhile now, but Blockbuster never has anything except the most popular mainstream movies. Are you saying there's an online Blockbuster service that has a better selection than the ****ty stores?

I don't want to try Netflix because I understand it's $9.95 at the least and I don't watch movies every month so it would be a complete waste to pay for a movie service every month when I might use it every two months or so. I mean, I don't even have a DVD player of my own, so...

[COLOR=Navy] I've been after Solomon Northup's Odyssey for awhile now

yes, they have the movie you have been looking for:

Solomon Northup's Odyssey(1984)
Half Slave, Half Free is the reissue title for African-American director Gordon Parks' TV movie Solomon Northup's Odyssey. Based on the autobiography Twelve Years a Slave, the film relates the story...
Starring: Petronia Paley, Mason Adams, Lee Bryant,

www.blockbuster.com

there is the option of purchasing dvds rather than the monthy service

They sent me one DVD once that was cracked, but there's an easy policy you follow & you get your replacement the next day, practically.

About 10 percent of the time, I go up to my queue online wanting to add a particular movie, but Netflix doesn't carry it. But I'm sure that's true of the other online rental companies, too.
