Where is everyone planning on staying?
And what nights are you going?
We're going Tues & Wed.
Debating Flamingo & Imperial Palace.

Uh, I marked Flamingo - does that help you make up your mind? Why do you want the Imperial again?

I think the Flamingo. A lot depends on how much my friend is willing to spend.
Going to the show on Friday. Will probably get there on Wednesday and stay three nights.

The Aladdin May 10 and 11, Bally's May 12 (they had a special price for the 12th and I couldn't resist!)

I was going to stay at the Flamingo but I am staying 7 nights and it was just too much money. I found a cheaper hotel almost right next door.

Would accomodation be hard to find in Las Vegas during May? I'm tossing up whether or not to buy tickets for myself for a few shows (will anyone else be going on their own or do most people no others from this forum? ) and then worrying about flights + accomodation in 3 weeks time when i fly to Vancouver from Australia (i'm currently in Australia and am heading to Vancouver to live for a year on a work visa).
Do i just buy the tickets now and worry about accomodation & return flight (from Vancouver to Las Vegas) in a month's time? Is it too risky? Will the shows sell out quickly? Any previous visitors to Las Vegas who can offer some advice? Help!

It seems like you should worry about your accomodations, but not your flight so much. Some hotels don't hardly have any rooms available for may right now, I think. Depending on where you want to stay, of course.

If you want to get a cheaper flight you might want to make sure that you book about 21 days before your travel date. I am not sure how fast Vegas fills up in May but the $ might go up if you wait. I would check around the different hotel websites and see who has what deals. The hotels usually will charge the first night's room and tax amount to your credit card right then and there when you book. It is refundable if you cancel within either 78 or 48 hours before arrival date mosrt of the time .Make sure that you check the hotel's cancelletion policy before you book just to make sure.

I was joking. I've never been in Circus Circus and The Stratosphere is basically this big cement looking deal. It does have a roller coaster on the roof.
Circus Circus has the rotating bar that Hunter Thompson talked about in his book, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. However, I understand that it is only open on the weekends now and serves only juice.
There is one casino downtown that had the strangest smell to it. :distress: It was a dump. I was going to say I was staying there but I couldn't think of the name of it.

Circus Circus is not bad, but you have to stay in the main tower. The motel in back is trash. My best friend was up $3000 in roulette there, so it can't be all bad, lol!
Stratosphere is actually pretty nice according to my brother. Of course, you are 100 miles away from everything :p

This is true, but there is a metro station at the Sahara (next closest hotel to the statosphere) and that will take you straight to Ceasar's. The metro works great (now).

Now we know where to go to gamble.... Roulette? geez, I didn't think that had very good odds.
It doesn't. It has the worst odds of any game in the casino, unless you just play black or red, which is only 2-to-1 (you double your $ if you win.) I've seen people walk up, lay down $100 bill on red & they've got another $100 just like that. Of course, I've seen the same amount of people lose their $100. I could never do it - I like to waste my money sloooooowwwwwlly!
The payout for numbers is 35 to 1 (which is not that great if you have one $1 chip on the number - but if you have 3 or 4 chips on one it adds up nicely  ) My friend grew up in a gambling family (several family members are bookies :p ) and she gets "feelings" about numbers. I always thought it was bull****, but how else do you win $3000 over 2 nights at roulette? She got me hooked, I've won a few times, but the most I've been up is about $150 or $200 (I was thrilled, nobody else seemed to care - pocket change for them, I guess.) I set a limit for myself & stick to it. It's easy, you don't have to think. I have, however, ignored "feelings" before & it always bites me in the ass. In general, though, I just pick the same #'s every time & sometime's they're lucky, sometimes not. It's fun, but I can see how people get addicted to gambling.
Slots, on the other hand - I have NO luck with them. At all. Ever. OK, once I threw a $20 in a machine cuz I thought it was a 50 cent machine - it was $5. I won $60, cashed out & left. :p Mark's parents have won over $1000 on slots on several different occasions. They must have the touch - I obviously don't.

Ha, I asked my boss at work and he explained roulette to me. same as you just did. I think I will get a "feeling" about numbers, too - I'm kinda good at that, sometimes. Or at least a color. I think I'll have to play roulette once, just cause i always see it on TV and it looks glamorous... Seriously, though? I want to see if someone has a trivia gambling game. I'm good at trivia. *never second guess your first thought* . My parents always play slots in Reno...I can see myself totally being addicted to pulling the lever - but the good thing is I can play low money slots. My friend picked all the Keno numbers once... but with my luck on lotto, that probably won't work for me.
Hey, I'd be thrilled, too, if I was up $100-$200! Wheeeeee, I won, I won!!!! I think I'd be good at keeping my money, though. And you can bet, if I ever was up...oh, say more than $200 - I'd keep the bulk of that money! okay, maybe $300. It would be hard for me to keep from thinking about all the stuff I could buy, or bills I could pay...course, with the free drinks, who knows? Anyways, blah blah.

The Stratosphere actually has really nice rooms with jacuzzi tubs. However......... I am deathly afraid of heights- even so, I decided I was going to try and "confront my fears" and have lunch in the rotating restaurant at the top of the tower...
Not a good idea. The whole place sways back and forth and back and forth and there are complete full panel windows from top to bottom. The windows actually curve under the floor of the restaurant, so no matter where you look, there's an optical illusion of no floor and straight down drops.... Ai, yi, yiiiiiiiiii!!!! I hated every minute of it!!! The food and service are fantabulous, though- top of the line ****, baby.

Oh, then you'll just LOVE their newest ride! Mark & I had the privelege of watching crazy people try it out in Ocotber (it wasn't officially running yet  )
This one looks like a roller coaster car. It's on a short straight track (maybe 50 feet long?) You get in one one end, the track tilts down a bit so you're looking at the strip & then the car speeds toward the other end, where it jolts to a dead stop. Then you get to hang over the strip for a couple of minutes & do it again- oh yeah, it looks fabulous  No thanks!

My palms are soaking wet right now.... Who on earth would want to ride that thing??!?!?!?!? That is horrible. Could you imagine if that thing broke down in any way??? I mean, people have been stuck on roller coasters at the top of a loop and all that stuff. Could you just imagine being stuck out on the end of that track for an hour or two??? And how would they get you off the track??? What if the brakes or the part of the structure that stops the car broke??

I'm surprised you Californians are, like, catching a gnarly Stevie show when, like, you could be, like, catching a wave, man.
We are not surfers, necessarily, we are just like, and all, several things. Sheesh. In addition, instead of saying things, sometimes we also "go" (So thennIgo - why did you say that?) Also, things can still be rad. Many things are also "sweet", but that's pretty common. And? you must speak pretty quickly, in run on sentences. You will encounter words that you never knew were contractions before. "Imminahbe" (I'm going to be), for intance. also - "Sinnyways" or "bh'innyways" (so anyways, but anyways). And on a variation..."S'Iwzall" (so I was all) and "'nIwazall" (and I was all) . And it's best to contract any words that can be, and group together as many contractions as possible. "S'iwazall - what'reyouginnado?" Try to avoid pronouncing consonants, if you can...make all 'T' sounds into 'D' sounds, it saves time, and declarifies your sentences. That way, you can talk faster! ok, so this may be mainly me and my friend Rain, (we're so happy to talk to each other, we both talk fast :p ) but I'm sure some others are like this, too... there's also "b'Imminuh" (but I'm going to). I'll leave you with a final sentence example: "S'Iwzall (so I was all) - whattayou think we should do? and he was like - Iowno (I dont' know), where'er you guys goin'? And then this girl comes up, and she'wzall, 'there's a sweet show at Blakes'. And we were like, let'sgdhthah (let's go to that)! And I'zall - I'minna godethe bathroom, I'll meechou there. Then this guy comes up, and I'zlike (I was like) - dude! watch where you're going!" (Dude is widely used.) It is also advisable to say "No Whay!" at anything astonishing. :wavey:
Fair warning to ledgies I'll be meeting - listen close! And if I have to repeat myself more than once, obviously, I will become impatient!  JK, sorta. (yes, sorta, not sort of). But, I fairly expect the southern ledgies to confuse me, as well. ;) yay! I can't wait!

Thanks for translating, Amber. At least now I'll know what the hell you're saying on this trip. :D
Actually, the way I talk is similar to the way you describe - lots of "So I go, blah blah blah..." and "I was like, blah blah blah." I've also been told I'm a "fast talker," so I think we'll get along fine. :)
Now Theresa & her Canadian accent? That's another story. She doesn't think she has one, but count how many times she say "ay." For example "wow, the hotels here in Vegas are really big, ay?" And "about" sounds like "aboat", etc.

Very funny, "ay".... Maybe I was actually saying something regarding a boat....now I remember, I said "is that a boat in the water?"
Oh ya, the correct spelling of "ay" is actually "eh",
