View Full Version : Not Make Believe

I just wanted to share with you all that I've been having a little love affair with "Not Make Believe" lately.
It all started the other week, when I had some friends over for dinner at my apartment. I had my I-Pod plugged into the stereo on "Shuffle," and NMB came on. One of my friends (a casual FM listener who doesn't have SYW) was like, "Wow, this is a good song." That kind of got me thinking about it again.
I think the melody is one of Stevie's catchiest of recent years, and Lindsey's production is interesting -- I like the bongo/drum fills. The only thing that keeps it from being classic are the lyrics, most of which are cliches or simply boring. Still, it's hard to believe this tune was left off the main album.
Anyone else have thoughts?

Oh, Joe will tell you all about my relationship with that song.

I absolutely *despised* it for months and months and months, but then one day it came on my car stereo, I started singing along, and fell in love with it. The lyrics are pretty wretched, but I could care less. Should have replaced Silver Girl or Thrown Down or Say You Will.

Me too. I used to just listen to the first few seconds of the song and would cringe at the sound of Stevie's voice and then skip the rest of the song. Finally one day I decided to listen to the whole thing and the song has now actually grown on me and I like it.

Good to see NMB get some love!

I don't mind some cliched lyrics (Christine and Lindsey and Stevie are all sinners in this department!).... if they're nice and short, for me they're better than a whole string of phrases that make no sense whatsoever. But yeah, the production of the song is it's best point.

Still, I even like the TISL demo. By the way, they kept at least one excess cliche out that for the SYW version - "It's written on the wind"

Oh god... the wall of sound. That deserves another thread. A flaming thread!!

 Really? I actually think it's one of Stevie's best recent vocals! Her voice has such a nice feathery quality in the first verse -- it reminds me of her 70s vocals. I forgot to mention that as another of the song's selling points for me.

Sorry, I can't get over the line "Sometimes it was too heavy." Yikes.

I can live with that -- what I'm not so fond of is the stuff she stole from other people, especially the Dickens quote and the song's title.

I've always liked this song, even the TISL demo. Yes, there are cliche lyrics. So? It's catchy. I love Stevie's vocal on it, she sounds so young. The spacey production really works as well.

I would have rather had this than Destiny Rules, which I think is horrid and her worst vocal in years.

I also love the Wall of Sound TD, and prefer it to the SYW version by far.

I would much rather have Not Make Believe on the album than Silver Girl. I love the production! I agree, her vocals on the first verse are very nasally and for a long while, it turned me off from the song. After I got over that initial shock, I really started enjoying the song and feel like it fits in so well with her TISL and SYW songs. I like the theme she has going on.
The "sometimes it was too heavy" line is so so..it is very Stevie so I can deal with it.
The one part I really do not get is "they both rushed by, like a thief in the night, taking no prisoners, just like the first time"...(sorry if those are not the EXACT words) What on earth is she referring to? I understand the Dickens reference and the "taking no prisoners" line always reminds me of Peacekeeper. I just do not really understand that line.."taking no prisoners..just like the first time". Maybe I just do not get it.
Cathy tune with awesome production!

I adore this song. It has a very underproduced song to it....like the music was recorded in a cave. I dunno if I would have liked it on the album. The flow from LMZ/NL to NMB makes all the different. It's still up there on my list as a favorite. :wavey:

the wall of sound version:

* ...has no friggin' fragment of "wall of sound" in it
* ...has some nice strummed guitars extra but totally lacks the brilliant bridge of the albumversion
* ...does not stand for long because the song is too repetative without the bridge

Lindsey's outtrovocal rocks, though.

Not Make Believe is ten times better then Silver Girl. I'm gonna burn me one with that switch. Good idea.

I would much rather have Not Make Believe on the album than Silver Girl."Silver Girl" has grown on me considerably, but I'd still switch it out for "Not Make Believe."

"NMB" is catchy and spritely, and has a terrific vocal.
I love the story she tells in the lyrics, and the use of the Dickens reference actually enchances it for me, as it instantly conjures a sense of grandeur.

Oh come on ChiliD, that production never ever has that Phil Spector "space" in it. It's just "bricked full" That's something else then the lightness and depth of the good old real wall of sound. I only know it as an MP3 but even then.... If Lindsey ever came close I think you can hear it in Someone's Gonna Change You're Mind. Nice joke, though. :)

Now THERE'S a classic oxymoron.

Spector leaves no "space" in his production, hence the "WALL" of wall-of-sound.

Now THERE'S a classic oxymoron.

That's language. Of course I know where "wall" refers to. But The brilliance of Spectors' "wall" was that it was layered and full, yet light and transparent. That's what I mean with "space": no "emptyness" but a threedimensional sound. The space in in the depth of the production. Like Lindsey does in SGCYM. That Thrown Down version is thick and flat. A wall it is, but not in terms of the great PS-"Wall Of Sound". To my ears, that reference is misused here.

Interesting, Gerald! "Thick and flat" is definitely how I'd describe that version, and I see what you mean about Spector's songs having more virtual space.

Since I'm to blame for the wall of sound moniker, I hereby commission you to give the demo a new name! Or you could even do a separate thread/poll?

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that "Thrown Down" (WOS Version) is not a Lindsey production? After all, didn't it surface on that German TISL advance CD? That indicates to me that the WOS version could well have been recorded for TISL -- with Lindsey on guest vocals. Whatcha think?

Interesting..

If it turns out not have been produced by Lindsey I wouldn't be surprised. It is not his style at all and really freaked me out when I first heard it, thinking that his production sensibilities had done a 180 for the new album.

Kelly
03-15-2005, 08:10 AM
That could be. I remember Stevie saying the song had been produced at least twice but she was unhappy with the way it turned out so she pulled it off TISL for Fleetwood Mac. I also remember Sheryl saying in an interview that Lindsey was guesting on the album. The way she described it, made it sound like it was going to be more substantial than just his guitar in I Miss You. I have long thought it was likely that he guested on TD with her on vocals. Whatever happend, the album version is much much better, IMHO. I like the extra guitar on the WoS version but the added lyrics on SYW, make the song for me. Without those lyrics, the song lacks some of the emotional power she is trying to convey. It has always been one of my favorite songs on the album and Lindsey did a fantastic job producing it.
It would have made a super concept video too.

The "wall of sound" version (sorry, Joe, I've always hated that nickname too :o ) originated on the 'Trouble In Shangri-La' acetate.

It was meant for 'TISL,' and features Stevie's backing vocalists. It was probably produced by Sheryl Crow (and co-produced by who knows who else), since Sheryl discussed a really terrific appearance by Lindsey that was going to be on the album and really please the fans. She could not have been talking about his tune-out and you'll miss it guest appearance on "I Miss You"!

Anyway, in my opinion, based on these facts, it's not a Mac version at all... outside of the fact that Lindsey is singing on it with Stevie.
I highly doubt John or Mick are on that version at all, given that it was recorded for 'TISL.'

So, in my eyes, it's the "TISL outtake version," and that's that. :)

chiliD
03-15-2005, 04:20 PM
I disagree with ya, Johnny. There's a completely different version of TD that is somewhat similar to what we know as the wos version except you can definitely hear that it is not Mick & John as the rhythm section...and it sounds more "fitting" to the sound of TISL. The WOS version is definitely Fleetwood Mac.

I'd have to agree with JS - the prominence of Stevie's backup singers sells it for me as a TISL outtake. I always wondered why they were so present on what I thought was an FM track... now it all makes sense.

Joe - you came up with the name "Wall of Sound"? Don't you love having affected online fan culture to such a degree that your nickname has become the definitive one - at least for now? :)

blinker12
03-15-2005, 11:13 PM
Glad this has finally been cleared up (at least IMO)! It never made sense to me that the WOS version was Mac. A summary of the reasons:

_ The prominence of Stevie's backup singers.
_ It appeared on the German acetate TISL -- this alone proves it predates the Say You Will sessions.
_ As Johnny Stew notes, Sheryl's promise that there would be an exciting Lindsey guest appearance on TISL.
_ An earlier version of "Thrown Down" is never discussed in the "Destiny Rules" film. If they had entirely scrapped the first version and re-recorded, it's likely there would have been some reference to that in the doc.
_ The new lyrics in the final version... indicating a significant amount of time passed between the recording of WOS and the final.

Well I recently did a computer reformat so I don't have the WOS version to reference for starters  Without hearing the other TISL track that JS mentioned, I can't say - but from memory I'd agree that the rhythm might be John and Mick. But who knows..

Nancy - yep; when I got back from a month in Japan at the end of 2002, the version had been leaked and was being touted as the first leak of an actual SYW track. When I heard it I hated it (in terms of it being a new sound for FM) and suggested that it was produced to be like a 'Wall of Sound', a nickname that I noted was taken up from that thread onwards. Only the person who said it first would ever remember who first said it :p And anyway as Gerald pointed out, it wasn't very appropriate to begin with!

Second, I must say that I really like Not Make Believe, but I think there could have been more in the way of production. It sounds unfinished to me. I would have really liked more background vocals, like a nice harmony vocal here or there. Or something else in the background of the chorous.

"Make Believe"
from "Showboat"
By Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II

Only make believe I love you,
Only make believe that you love me.
Others find peace of mind in pretending,
Couldn't you?
Couldn't I?
Couldn't we?
Make believe our lips are blending
In a phantom kiss, or two, or three.
Might as well make believe I love you,
For to tell the truth I do

Your pardon I pray
'Twas too much to say
The words that betray my heart.

We only pretend
You do not offend
In playing a lover's part.
The game of just supposing
Is the sweetest game I know.
Our dreams are more romantic
Than the world we see.

It was cool when Mick did his vesturbation thing during "Oklahoma".

Holy christ I bought that bonus disc.

I haven't heard it for a couple of years because I can't find it. But now I'm wondering if I ever played that 2nd disc at alll?! What was it? like cuts from earlier albums?

It was Lindsey's version of Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit", Stevie's outtake "Not Make Believe" and "Peacekeeper" & "Say You Will" from the AOL Sessions promo performance.

It was Lindsey's version of Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" . . . .

Which I must say I thought was good!!!!!!

I like Not Make Believe in terms of the musical structure and interesting drumming and phrasing. But, I think the lyrics are trite, even for her, especially IMO the red ones below - commentary from the peanut gallery -

It isn't just that we cause each other such pain
Everywhere we go now, at home or at play
It hurts my self-esteem, it hurts my everything
I am reeling, oh, it hurts my feelings

Sometimes it was heavenly
Sometimes it was too heavy
Sometimes it's just too much for me
Well, I want to run away

But then there are the things that cast doubt away
Those things that made me stay for so long
Not make believe then
I'm not make believe now

It's not make believe then
I'm not make believe now
I didn't understand then
But I understand now

It was the best of the times
It was the worst of times
And they both rushed by
Like a thief in the night
Taking no prisoners
Just like the first time
Adventures in paradise
Just like the first time [I mean REALLY  ]

Then there are the things that cast doubt away [this one is phrased beautifully IMO]
The things that made me stay for so long
Not make believe then
I'm not make believe now
It's not make believe then
I'm not make believe now
I didn't understand then
But I understand now

Then there are the things that cast the doubt away
The things that made me stay for so long
Not make believe then
I'm not make believe now

It's not make believe then
I'm not make believe now
I didn't understand then
But I understand now

I would much rather have Not Make Believe on the album than Silver Girl.

I would rather have Stevie burping the alphabet than to have Silver Girl on SYW. I really loathe that song. In fact, and I didn't even realize I felt this way until right now , but I think Silver Girl is a LAZY attempt on Stevie's part. L-A-Z-Y. It goes nowhere! She really should have left that one in the vault never to have seen the light of day. As Simon would say, it was VERY self-indulgent of her to put that on SYW.

Actually, I've grown to like "Silver Girl"...by far not my favorite, but I don't think it is NEARLY as bad as I originally thought.

I'd put "Not Make Believe" in place of "Running Through The Garden"...now THERE'S a stinky song.

I also have grown to, not love, but appreciate "Silver Girl" - its okay, but not as bad as everybody says it is.
