Yes folks, it's that time of year again - when the music, film and interactive industries invade my fair city for their spring break.

Robert Plant is the keynote speaker this year - and yes, I'll be going to see his new band, that's a no-brainer. I heard the single on the radio the other day, it's catchy!

I also plan to see the New York Dolls, and hopefully The Donnas (who are opening for Billy Idol!). And I'll be at Elysium Sat. nite for Japan nite. I like how they mixed up the genres this year for Japan nite. Petty Booka rules!

The latest season of the Real World is currently being filmed in Austin as well. Their "job" is to film a documentary - they'll be following a band throughout SXSW. I don't know who the band is, but it's probably someone local - I can't imagine you'd get much footage from just one band playing a 45-min. set in one SXSW showcase.

Okay, so here's the link - I know it's a lot to sort through, but you can click on genre, city, country, etc. to sort the list alphabetically by one of those categories. Y'all did good last year w/ the Scissor Sisters and a few others I managed to see! Thanks!! :D

Is our lovely Minnie Driver performing again, Livia? And maybe you'll meet another Soprano this year. ;)

I'd catch The Crickets with Nanci Griffith at the Austin Music Hall, I think Griffith is pretty good.

Your memory is impressive! No Minnie Driver this year...she got replaced at the Oscars by Beyonce and was supposedly inconsolable. Aaaw....my uncle always says she should be a porn star w/ that name....

Yeah, I always do the Music Awards on Wed. nite, which normally ends at midnight or so. The larger venues are Antone's, Austin Music Hall, La Zona Rosa and Stubb's - so anything at those venues is pretty easy to get into, without worrying about them being full and not getting in... I'd love to catch John Doe at the Cont. Club, which only holds about 200 people.

I've been too busy at work and the rest of my nutty life to really peruse the website and the local entertainment rag is usually more forthcoming w/ the buzz band info, but I haven't heard much ado about anyone this year yet.

How about you, Tracye? I know you're gonna read this! LOL

Look what I found - may be a good spot to mingle with Drea De Matteo again, assuming they're still together ?

Uh, you best believe I'll be at the Robert Plant show. Unfortunately he's playing on the same night as my girl Kathleen Edwards. Hopefully she'll be playing a day show too. I AM NOT missing Robert Plant. It's the closest I'll ever come to seeing Led Zeppelin in my lifetime.

Billy Idol and The Donnas? Better get there early! Sounds like a good show, I think I'll camp out at Stubbs that night. They are playing at Stubbs right?

Yep - Wed. nite. I'll have to make a mad dash from the Awards show to Stubb's, and hopefully get in!

I agree with Sharon about Ray LaMontagne- fantastic. And the Frames on Thursday- you really should see them. They are the best, and so good live. The new record, "Burn the Maps," is fantastic. Seriously. See. The. Frames.

On Friday, there are some great ones- Ash, Raveonettes, The Kills, Stephen Malkmus, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Rainer Maria- but the lineup at Stubb's looks fantastic. Aqualung, Bloc Party, Kasabian, a DJ set w/ Fischerspooner, and the NEW YORK DOLLS. That's what'd I do. Although No Depression has Caitlin Cary and Robbie Fulks, too.

Saturday, the only band I'd want to see is PHOENIX. I LOVE PHOENIX. Go if you want to dance.

Check out Ray LaMontagne (amazing voice) and the band Magnolia Electric Co. (very Neil Young crossed with Will Oldham), who are awesome!

Oh and Martha (sister of Rufus) Wainwright is pretty good too, as is Graham Coxon, the ex-guitarist of Blur.

Willy Mason is great, The Frames are a fantastic Irish band and their live show is a lot of fun, wow there's loads, Mary Lou Lord, Caitlin Cary, Calexico, John Cale, Idlewild...

Ed Harcourt! He's a fantastic British singer-songwriter and he's fantastic live!

Wow, the festival sounds excellent. I wish I could go.

Thanks!!!!

my highest recommendation would be Keren Ann. i'm tellin ya, she's the sweetest thing since Twix. i saw her last year in an intimate concert and i just melt, other than this must-see, you may wanna consider Embrace, John Cale, Charlie Sexton, Aimee Mann and definetly Kasabian.

The new Raveonettes album is out in May and is AWESOME. We've been listening to it non-stop. It's got a totally different vibe, but in a good way. There's an awesome cover of "My Boyfriend's Back" on there.

I'm with Tommer, Keren Ann is great.

I can never go to SXSW. Ever. I won't eat, drink, or sleep. And I'd be depressed at all the acts I'm missing.

So glad you love The Frames, Hayley! They are adored in Ireland but haven't really made an impact anywhere else. They're a great live band. I haven't heard their new record yet though.

Livia, Bloc Party are getting loads of press here in the UK, they're being touted as the next big thing, as are Kasabian, so Hayley's right, they may be worth checking out too. Willy Mason is excellent too, not sure if I mentioned him before.
I totally missed the fact the New York Dolls are playing. Very cool.

I LOVE The Frames. They have a lot of roots here in Chicago, and are a little more well-known here than anywhere else in the states. I definitely recommend the new record- it's different, but it's good. Really, really, really, really good.

Bloc Party's starting to get buzz here, too- I like them. Kasabian I'm biased on, because I'm helping work that record, but I like them a lot too.

Local college paper compared Phoenix to Fleetwood Mac!

Daily Texan (http://www.dailytexanonline.com/news/2005/03/09/Entertainment/Check.Out.Whos.Coming.To.This.Years-889506.shtml)

"I gave my mom a copy of this CD for her birthday. She actually liked it. "It reminds me of Fleetwood Mac," she said. Actually, she wasn't so far off. It's sort of like Fleetwood Mac in their prime, only a lot cleaner, and with a French guy as a singer. Again, this comparison should be taken as a compliment, as hard as that might be to understand."

You'd love it! You just gotta accept the fact that you can't be in two (or five or ten) places at once! My rule is to fly solo - I'll tell my friends what MY plans are, if I run into someone, great. If not, I'll make new friends! Or just enjoy the music. That's the advice I give - and wear comfy shoes, bring a larger purse than you think you'll need - you will collect all kinds of schwag (sp?). People literally hand out CDs, stickers, keychains, etc., like candy to kiddies on Halloween.

I've survived 2 days, 2 more to go....Robert Plant was amaaazing last nite! Soundtrack of Our Lives played before him - meh. And the band before them was wild - Legendary Shack Shakers? Something like that, from Nashville. Hillbilly punk - they were CRAZY! Earlier last nite, I saw a hip-hop band from Seattle called A Gun Called Tension, then I went to see John Cleary - funk band from New Orleans. Quite the variety of music indeed....

I went to the Austin Music Awards show Wed. nite -shook hands with Beatle Bob and Roky Erickson - Nancy Griffith singing w/ the Crickets was the highlight for me. After that - Billy Idol - GREAT show! Got my pic taken with him and saw Rosanna Arquette there. She has a film in the film fest - a documentary called "All We Are Saying," she interviewed a bunch of rock stars - it looks interesting.

If you wanna see pics and/or read reviews - go here:

I've got a VIP pass (which means, free beer and free food) for the free show at Auditorium Shores - Ian Hunter and Alejandro Escovedo (local favorite) - that will be over by 9 - then I'm headed to the Emo's/Stubb's part of town - The Kills at 10, the Raveonettes at 11 (same club) - the Stubb's lineup is Aqualung, Shout Out Louds, Kasabian, some DJ, Bloc Party and New York Dolls at 12:30. Bands playing at the same time? The Frames at midnight (other side of town), Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies at 1 AM (close to where I'll be) and Pretty Girls Make Graves at 1 AM (also close to where I'll be). If the New York Dolls is as packed as Billy Idol was, I'll need to be at Stubb's by 11 or earlier to ensure entry....I may leave the Dolls show early to catch one of the other bands down the street. Or not.

Let me know if you saw the Frames- I was listening to their live CD "Set List" all day today. Too bad Ray LaMontagne cancelled- he's great live. Let me know how the Raveonettes were, too, if you saw them- they're playing at the Double Door here in May with Autolux opening, which is going to be awesome. I really like their new record.

Tales from last nite:

Ian Hunter: Free beer and free food, how happy can you be? VIP seating, literally ON the left side of the stage, 15 feet away from the man himself - took a few pics. He did "All the Young Dudes," of course - "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" (duh, I didn't know he wrote that?!), it was really cool. But no Cleveland Rocks?? That was a disappointment....Anyway, I had to stay for all of it 'cause it was so good...which kinda backfired, because the line at Emo's for The Kills and the Raveonettes was insane. I waited for about 15 minutes and hadn't moved an inch, so I said "F*ck this, I'm going to Stubb's."

Waited in THAT line for an hour while listening to Kasabian. They're supposed to let badges in before wristbands, but they were letting in both, a little bit at a time, which was good for me, but if I had a badge, I would have been pissed - that line was as long as the wristband line - so then I waited in line for 15 minutes to pee (I don't do port-a-potties), another 10-15 min. to get a cocktail (a double!) and finally sat down and got off my feet. I saw the Dolls come in the side door, to the right of the indoor stage, 10 feet away from me, and get escorted to the remote dressing room. David Johansen looked very thin, like Iggy Pop, and weak! I mean, he looked like there was something seriously wrong with him, like he needed to be held up. The guy sitting next to me saw them play at the private Spin party earlier yesterday, and said David was drinking a lot. But once they hit the stage, he was completely different!! They rocked, it was a great show!! I kept thinking how awesome it must have been to see them at CBGB's in the late 70's. I was up front for the first few songs, then my claustrophobia kicked in and I got outta there and headed for the side of the stage...they finished at 1:40 or so....

I high-tailed it to Nuno's and caught the last 3 songs of Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies, which was cool. There was this guy there who was the spitting image of a younger Mick Fleetwood, I did a double-take - and took a profile pic without him noticing...

Tonight is my "whatever" night - just cruise down 6th St. and let my ears guide me. I do plan to end up at Antone's for Phoenix.

NEW YORK - Hours earlier, Hilly Kristal joined rock's royalty inside a Waldorf-Astoria ballroom for the latest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions.

By the morning, though, Kristal sips a cup of coffee and pops an antacid as he considers the future of his own piece of rock history: CBGB's, the venerable birthplace of punk. After 32 years in business, the world-renowned club on the Bowery is in danger of losing its lease.

"Even at this Hall of Fame thing, people were coming up and asking, `What can we do? What can we do?'" Kristal recalls, sitting at his cramped desk just inside the club's front door. "It's very discouraging after all these years."

Kristal says the club owes $91,000 in back rent — through a bookkeeping mix-up. (His landlord concurs, but still wants the money.) Come August, when its lease expires, he expects the current $19,000 monthly rent to at least double, although Kristal's landlord says there will be no new lease unless the old mess is gone.

"Show me you can meet your current obligations, and then we'll talk about new ones," says Muzzy Rosenblatt, executive director of the Bowery Residents' Committee. "His destiny is in his own hands."

Rosenblatt's group holds a 45-year lease on the building, where the agency houses 250 homeless people above the club. CBGB's is their lone commercial tenant; their rent feud dates back five years, when the committee went to court to collect more than $300,000 in back rent from the club.

The agency currently is in court trying to evict CBGB's, citing the current unpaid rent and Kristal's alleged failure to repair code violations in the legendary club. Kristal is battling on both fronts.

"I'm energized," says the gray-bearded owner. "I'm going to fight."

For fans of the dank storefront bar, its demise would mean the demolition of the Empire Punk Building.

"I consider it a historic place," says Tommy Ramone, drummer in one of the club's most enduring bands. "It would be like losing a landmark of sorts, you know?"

CBGB's, with its familiar white awning, holds a special place in the city's music history. It was here that the Ramones, the Talking Heads and Blondie created the punk scene for small crowds that paid a $1 cover charge.

"CBGB's allowed bands — original bands, no less — the freedom to go and play and do whatever they pleased," recalls Tommy Ramone. "It was a good fit."

Rosenblatt is aware of the club's legacy. He and his future wife shared their first kiss inside the club, although he's quick to add that nostalgia won't keep its doors open.

"I will not subsidize CBGB's at the expense of the homeless," Rosenblatt said. "I can't allow my own sentimentality to impede our ability to serve homeless people."

For Rosenblatt, that's one of the major problems in his agency's dispute with Kristal. He estimates the committee has spent $50,000 in legal fees and expenses to collect back rent from the club and to force Kristal to bring his space up to code, taking money away from the homeless.

Kristal suggested that greed was at the root of his problems with the landlord. A new tenant could afford a much steeper rent, and the building housing the club is now worth many millions of dollars, he said.

Back in the early '90s, when the neighborhood was still dicey, Kristal considered buying the building — but he couldn't raise the needed $4 million. The majority of money generated by the club now comes from T-shirt sales, he said.

Kristal was considering several options, including turning the space into a museum during the day. The club is already a repository of rock 'n' roll memorabilia, with every spare inch of its walls covered in posters, fliers and stickers for hundreds of bands.

Several wealthy benefactors have also stepped up with offers to rescue the club, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. "It's an icon of the New York music scene," the dot-com billionaire said by e-mail, confirming his interest.

Kristal doesn't know if that will help.

"You raise $50,000, $100,000 — big deal," he said. "This is going to be $20,000 a month more, at least. It doesn't make sense."

Yeah, I'd heard about CBGB's problems - looks like a benefit concert is in order! That place just can't disappear!

I forgot to mention something funny at the Robert Plant show - some dumbass toward the front kept yelling, "ImmigraTION Song, ImmigraTION Song!" Everyone around me was laughing and saying to each other, "Dude, it's ImmigRANT Song, maybe if you got it RIGHT, he'd do it....but I don't recall Robert Plant asking for requests." LOL I guess no one around dumbass guy was correcting him, because he kept yelling it in-between songs.

Long ass line again for Stubb's - I wanted to see Aimee Mann, but blew it off. I heard the sound was awful and from this review, it sounds like I didn't miss much:

http://www.austin360.com/sxsw/content/sxsw/reviews/19reviews.html?urac=n&urvf=11113734261400.5800783336826792#mann

So, I went to see Rachel Fuller - 18th Floor Crowne Plaza: The one and only Jerri Hall was there, joined Rachel onstage and didn't exactly sing, but rather spoke some lyrics. I took a pic of her onstage....and had to call my friend Bruce in SA to tell him. He's the Will to my Grace, and he WORSHIPS Jerri Hall!

I stuck around for the beginning of Raul Malo, and headed down 6th St. for pizza and wherever my ears took me. No one made enough of an impression on me to remember who they were - some punk band from Germany - just other random sounds spilling out into the street - worked my way back to Antone's for Phoenix. This always happens to me at least once during SXSW - a cab driver tries to rip me off. I took a cab earlier from Antone's to Stubb's for $4.50, or something like that. I hailed a cab in front of the Driskill to take me back to Antone's - 1/2 the distance of my earlier cab ride. The driver (Roy's Taxi, should have gotten the cab number to report the prick) asked me where Antone's was, I told him and he said he was going to charge me $10!! I said, "Uh, I don't THINK so, a**hole - I live here M-Fer, and you are NOT going to rip me off," and I got out and slammed the door. The next cab was a yellow taxi, he was a doll and couldn't believe what the other driver had done. Anyway, Phoenix was running very late, didn't start until almost 1:30, but I LOVED them! Pinetop Perkins was hanging out by the restrooms and shoe-shine guy, selling his own cds - I took a pic w/ him and talked to him for a bit. SWEET man!

TWO after-hours parties later, and finally drove my tired ass home....can't wait 'til next year..... :p Oh, and thanks for all the recommendations, wish I could have seen more, but that's the case every year.

Oh, I'm glad you at least got to see Phoenix! I LOVE them. Was listening to "United" and "Alphabetical" all day yesterday in the car. I'm going to see them and Dogs Die In Hot Cars next month.

That happened to me once with a cabbie in Chicago. I told him to **** off and reported him not only to his employer but to the city's transportation association.

Livia, did you ever get to see the Frames? I saw them at a free day show on Thursday afternoon. Some radio station was doing a live show, can't remember which one. They were really good. Since it was "Patty's Day" they did a laid back acoustic set, I guess because they wanted to drink and just have a good time. Anyway, they were amazing. I can only imagine what they would sound like "plugged in." It must be a mind blower because the acoustic set was powerful enough.

And you didn't miss much with Aimee Mann. She is absolutely wonderful, I love Aimee, but the sound was piss-poor and she took 45 minutes to set up! Argh, my feet and back were killing me but of course but that sums up much of my experience with SXSW...waiting in lines, waiting for bands to set up, etc. I was glad that she played "Wise Up" and "Save Me" two of my favorite songs of hers. She also did "Humpty Dumpty" from Lost in Space. I was hoping for Pavlov's Bell, but she never played it.

I caught Bobby Conn at a free day show too. Man, you must really investigate those free day shows...oftentimes they're better than the nightshows! And they're free with free beer! You can't beat that **** with a stick.

For all you hardrock/metal fans: check out Isis. I think they're from L.A. if I'm not mistaken. They will blow your ass out. I am not kidding at all. No hyperbole here. They are an amazing band. If you're acquainted with the Japanese instrumental band Mono, or the American band Mogwai, just imagine a combination of those two bands but cranked up past 11 with a metal edge. Oh. my. god. Amazing.

And what more can be said about Robert Plant?...the man still shreds. His voice is in top notch shape. I couldn't believe he could still belt it out but he did. I'm still reeling from "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, " I can die happy now that I've heard that song live from the man himself.

Edit: oh yeah, I was on the front row for Robert Plant and he smiled and winked at me twice ~sigh~ needless to say I was transfixed.

I kept the Wed. XLent on-hand for the daytime schedule. I noticed at 3 PM that the Frames were playing somewhere at 1 PM, and then the next day I found out they didn't end up playing until 5....oh well....

The year I had a badge, I did ALL the daytime ****, the tradeshow, all the nighttime showcases, I did it ALL - had a blast, but it nearly killed me.

"Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You," nearly made me weep!

From today's Austin American Statesman - so THAT'S who the guy with Jerry Hall was!

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/auto/epaper/editions/tuesday/news_24f31d1137f54071004a.html

"Lovebirds at SXSW

Here's a couple that knows a bit about being married to someone more famous.

Actress Jerry Hall and San Francisco Chronicle Editor Phil Bronstein (the former Mr. Sharon Stone) were listening cheek to cheek to Rachel Fuller's South by Southwest showcase Saturday night at the Crowne Plaza. Also seen in the company of Hall and Bronstein were former Gov. Ann Richards, writer Bud Shrake and entertainment attorney Rick Pappas and his wife, Adrienne.

Hall was there not only to give moral support to her best friend Fuller (whose boyfriend is Pete Townshend) but also to add some spoken-word pieces to a song Fuller wrote about Jerry and Mick Jagger's custody dispute over their dining room table.

The New York Post, meanwhile, reported spying the couple at Finn & Porter, chatting with Robert Plant and cuddling over dinner.

In case you guys are interested, the Robert Plant and Aimee Mann shows from SXSW are now on Easy Tree. :woohoo:

I didn't download Plant because there are too many leechers right now, but Aimee's show downloaded in twenty minutes and it kicks. Driving Sideways and Dear John are fabulous.

Here's what to do:

Go to http://www.bittorrent.com and download the client.

After the client is installed, search for a torrent on Easy Tree. When you find one that you want to download, click on the title and it will take you to the download page. You have to click the .torrent file at the top of the page and it will start to download for you. It'll ask you where you want to save it on your hard drive.

Once it's all finished downloading, you'll have to download two tiny programs in order to listen to the files. One program is FLAC Frontend and the other is mkw Audio Compression Tool. I'll get you the links if you want, but gimme a minute. :xoxo:
