Billboard Bits: Summer Tours, Nickelback, BNL
Billboard Magazine (http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000827567)

Talk is starting to heat up about early summer tour packages for North America. Among the outings believed to be in the works are a Don Henley/Stevie Nicks bill, a Queensryche/Judas Priest pairing and a tour featuring Robert Plant and another high-profile artist. Another American Idols tour is also being plotted, and a North American tour by Queen and Paul Rodgers is also still a go, sources say.

Considering the success of their recent tours with the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, respectively, Henley and Nicks would seem to be a can't miss collaboration. Henley has joined Nicks on stage on several occasions during her solo tours for the duet "Leather and Lace," most recently at the last two shows of her 2001 Trouble in Shangri-La trek.

I just want straight Stevie. No Don Henley (not really a fan of his solo stuff anyway), definatly no Sheryl Crowe. Tom Petty would be the only exception. I want a Stevie SOLO tour!!!!

I doubt it is true. I just can't see Stevie sharing the stage with someone. She hasn't toured with anyone else in alooong time. What WH? Maybe RAL...I can't remember.

Well if she tours w/ Crow I will be pissed thats all I need to say! I would love to see a Nicks/Henly Tour! They could share a stage, duets, ect ect!
IT WOULD KICK ASS! This tour would probably see quite a bit of tickets. But it would be a bit more expensive though!

I'm with the few people who want her to focus on making the record. TISL is a fine LP and in her top 3 best solo lps easily .Id rather see her do good studio work than go on a geezer fest summer tour to rake in the dough that neither she nor Henley need(if anyone on here thinks either of them do they are mistaken)Stevie admits herself that while she squandered fortunes on the high life she was never anywhere near broke there were too many royalities coming in from her dual careers plus she didn't have Mick's psychotic penchant for buying real estate he didn't need.In the old days she recorded ,then toured. The break in the Wild Heart sessions for the Mirage tour being the exception but there was an album to promote.Touring with no album to promote is what these 70s bands and singers with no major labels or chance of having a successful album do now .She is not yet in that category so she should not do it and does not need to .In fact even after the album is finished I'd like to see her limit her touring this is a woman that had problems touring in her 20s and is now 3 years away from 60 for Chrissakes.

I feel the same way. Stevie needs to concentrate on that new cd or whatever cd (reissues/remasters) she plans on releasing this year instead of ANOTHER tour. Take a break, Stevie!

I posted the Don/Stevie info on an Eagles message board. A few people want to see Don team up with Sheryl Crow. instead of Stevie.

That would be fine in my book as long as Don and especially Sheryl stay away from Stevie.

This double bill does not sound like it is going to go over very well with either Eagles or Mac fans.

Take a break, Stevie! There probably isn't much for her to do on a reissue or remaster project, other than write some liner notes or gather up some old photos or something.

I mean, what would she need to record for a remastered "Bella Donna"? That's strictly an engineering feat.

I have mixed feelings about this...and Daniels site (SNL info ) is now reporting that a updated very best of Stevie Nicks is slated to be released in May! Ugh!!

I say enough of these greatest hits tours and packages I would be more excited about her releasing her re-mastered cataloge along with some left over goodies. But would much prefer new material!!!!

And besides the question remains, has Stevie over-saturated the market on the FM SYW tour the last 2 years!?.....

Every show that I went on the TISL tour Sheryl was there. I have seen enough of her thanks. What was the big deal with Sheryl Crow showing up a lot? Carlos Rios & Brett Tuggle show up a lot, too. Sheryl played rhythm guitar -- no different from anyone in Stevie's band playing. Sheryl sang some backup -- no different from what Sharon or Mindy does.

The only difference between Sheryl & the rest of Stevie's band is that Sheryl played one or two of her own songs, but that's hardly a big deal, is it? Didn't you guys find the prospect of seeing Stevie help out on "Every Day Is a Winding Road" interesting? You know ... something a little off the well-trod path for a Stevie Nicks concert? Were you that impatient to get back into another round of "Gold Dust Woman" that you couldn't wait an additional five minutes for it? Hell, you knew it was coming anyway.

I find the Sheryl Crow antagonism baffling. She didn't share the stage that year with Stevie -- she was just a part of the band. And Stevie's bands need all the star power they can get.

Stevie used to do what Sheryl did: hop onstage with musician friends. And those appearances over the years were some of the most interesting of all Stevie time: Stevie with John Stewart, Stevie with Walter Egan, Stevie with Bob Welch, Stevie with Les Dudek, Stevie with Todd Rundgren, Stevie with Bob Dylan, Stevie with Petty & the Heartbreakers, etc.

Daniels site (SNL info ) is now reporting that a updated very best of Stevie Nicks is slated to be released in May! Ugh!!You're kidding. What a bummer. "Timespace" & "Enchanted" aren't sufficient collections of her big hits? She & her label feel she needs a third hits package? Maybe she keeps releasing these things just to give members of her family design work.
And besides the question remains, has Stevie over-saturated the market on the FM SYW tour the last 2 years!?.....She tours too much. A year rarely goes by in which she doesn't perform.

I like Sheryl Crow and I absolutely love her contribution to the TISL album. I thought she did an amazing job as producer. However, I wouldn't necessarily want her to do a full fledged tour with Stevie just as i'm not sure I like the idea of Henley and Stevie together. Making a guest appearance is awesome. Come out and sing a song or two with Stevie. I'm cool with that.

To me, a tour featuring the lead singers of two supergroups just reaks of someone wanting to make a buck and line their pockets. Neither have anything to promote. Her reissues aren't out yet and although there has been talk of them, who knows if they'll even be out before the summer? I'm just not sure I like the direction this seems to be taking. I would have rather she toured smaller venues by herself.

I thought she really understod the vision that Stevie had for TISL and produced the hell out of it. Think of how much acclaim TISL garnered. It was an amazing album, IMO. So no, she certainly wasn't any worse than any of the aforementioned.

For what it's worth, I flew out to see Stevie and Sheryl for the specific reason that Sheryl was there and I might get the chance to see something a little different.
Sheryl is an extremely talented woman and does nothing but add to the package when she's with Stevie. JMHO, of course.

I am just not a big of fan of Sheryl and I did not want to have to see her every show that I went to. Not that it was that many.

Yes, I remember going up to Boston in 1981 to see Stevie sing 2 songs with Tom Petty and I was not that big a fan of his. They performed a duet that was big hit at the time. That was very interesting.

Stevie has a certain chemistry to a degree with those other artists which I don't feel that she does with Sheryl. IMHO.

I say let the woman do what she friggin' wants to do. I'd love to see Stevie touring this summer, with or without Henley. I understand touring is a great way to get the creative juices flowing, and I think some good songs could come from it for her next solo record. I also think Henley, Crow, and Shanks are all very positive influences for Stevie.

I'm not much of a Sheryl Crowe fan...and I don't like what she did with some of Stevie's songs on TISL. Sorcerer, for instance, no longer sounded like a Stevie song to me, just sounded like a Sheryl song. I can't even listen to that song, and the old demos and BN live version is one of my favorite songs. On TISL though, I skip it everytime.

As for the updated Greatest Hits, I think that is a good thing. All the songs on Timespace were remixed, remember (and some not so well). Plus, she'll most certainly drop "Sometimes It's A Bitch", "Hard Game to Play", and "Desert Angel", and replace them.

Even though Enchanted was released, I think a 1-disc, cheaper & updated GH would sell more to casual fans. And could this be an Atlantic Co. set, since she's with Reprise now? I'd hate to think TISL material wouldn't be included, but I wouldn't doubt it.

The Henley/Nicks tour sounds interesting. Not sure what I think about it yet. And I think the last double-bill tour was The Wild Heart, which she shared with Joe Walsh. If they're gonna do that, I'd almost rather she & Don share the stage the whole time and just alternate songs (kinda like with Lindsey on the SYW tour). It would make for a much more exciting show -- "Dreams" morphing into "Boys of Summer", and "Dirty Laundry" launching into "Stand Back". Not to mention lots of duets. Just a thought... But it's sad that we prob won't get any new songs on this tour.

And Stevie's bands need all the star power they can get.I would have thought that the antagonism towards Sheryl joining Stevie on some of the TISL dates would have been limited strictly to Stevie's toughest-to-please fans, but my aunt and my friend Anne went to the Pittsburgh show together, and both of them groaned and complained to me later about how annoyed they were to see Sheryl up there singing some songs when they had paid to see Stevie.

To me it seemed like more bang for your buck, but I guess others don't see it that way.

I thought it was awesome of Sheryl to take time out of her busy schedule to basically play glorified backing musician to Stevie. Seemed like a really sweet gesture of love and respect from a friend.

Is she really any worse than John Shanks or Rupert Hine or Glyn Johns or Thom Panunzio or Andrew Slater or Gordon Perry or Keith Olsen or Chris Lord-Alge or Rick Nowels, & so on & so forth?I'm weird, because I've loved the production work of everyone on that list... except Glyn Johns (assuming he's responsible for the sound of that atrocious 'Street Angel' recording of "If You Were My Love" and some of the other outtake mixes I've heard from that album), and Rupert Hine (I like SOME of what Rupert did, but I don't feel he was properly suited for the rest of the album).
(Oh, and Slater didn't make enough of an impression on me to form an opinion.)

I thought Sheryl did a terrific job for Stevie... staying true to the original demos, while adding something extra to them in the process.

And I know he doesn't seem popular around here, but I quite liked Shanks' production work on 'TISL,' too, and I'd love to see Stevie work with him again.

That's so weird, cause I thought Sheryl's harmonies added so much to stevie's songs - I loved it. And, Sheryl looked hot, I liked her outfit. I would want her up there singing harmonies with tons of Stevie's songs. It only makes stevie sound better, IMO.

So no sara or Beautiful Child or Blue Lamp or Bella Donna or Anything rare.... Oh well, I am still looking forward to this. This means that she will be playing BIG venues, so it looks like the small 1,000-6,000 venues wont be on this tour. DAMN! But I hope she will play KC! or OKC! Cuz I want to see this show!

I think it's great news. I didn't expect Stevie would do ANYTHING in 2005!

So now we have three rumors; The co-headlining tour, the Vegas shows, and the compilation. I just wish The Nicksfix would tell us SOMETHING official. Obviously they want to wait until everything is certain, but would it be so hard for them so say "Stevie is tentetively scheduling... such and such".

And I think the last double-bill tour was The Wild Heart, which she shared with Joe Walsh.Stevie & Joe did not co-headline that tour. Stevie headlined & Joe was the opener. (Same situation as the 1986 tour with Peter Frampton.)

Stevie has never toured as a solo act co-headliner or opening act, although Fleetwood Mac has both co-headlined & opened.

Atlantic and Reprise are both part of the same parent company, WEA (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic)- the new greatest hits disc will include songs from TISL. The disc itself might not actually even be under Reprise, it may be through Warner Special Marketing/Products or Rhino.

Stevie could wear white and sing Sable On Blonde on my lap in what's left of her upper register and I still wouldn't go because Don Henley won't get a bloody penny from me. And Stevie doesn't need any more of my cash, either, as a matter of fact. Lord knows she doesn't buy a new wardrobe with any of it.

Touring at this time seems silly. Considering the HIP, the FOOT, and NO NEW RECORD, I think it is preposterous. Chump that I am, I would probably go, but wouldn't expect much. Henley is a spot on singer and an excellent musician. His band, when I saw him, was top notch. However, he isn't much of a stage presence. It's not like he's a showman. And don't get me started on the bad
Henna dye job. The one off's with him were fine. A whole tour sounds painful. I have no interest in seeing him or the Eagles ever again. And "Leather and Lace" makes me cringe.
I'd rather see her rest, write, and record something new. But since when does she listen to me ? She hasn't returned my calls for WEEKS now.

That was basically a "Greatest Hits Tour" minus Garbo, Sleeping Angel, Rose Garden, And I honestly think that that was her best tour IMHO! Some people may disagree. Iwish I could go back in time and see that tour again! I think, if she does tour, the setlist wont change much from the TISL tour. I dont care either way, I am just glad I may have the chance to see her. I think were luck, Look at Madonna's fans.... probably around 50% of them have never seen her live. Most people around here can say they have seen Stevie once of more than twice.
Anyways that was my rant for the night

As a fan since the Rumours era that has seen Stevie live well into the double digits I'm going to have to sit this one out.Touring at the drop of a hat ad nausem is becoming silly. There are similar and respected artists who have a certain mystique and class because they did not do this.Joni Mitchell comes to mind as well as Kate Bush .I will be heart sick if in 10 years a past retirement age Stevie is doing the state fair and amusement park circuit but that is where this seems to be heading.

I'd rather see her rest, write, and record something new.Me too, Sparkelah, me too. :distress:

More and more though I really am wondering if there's a GOOD reason why she put off recording a new album, when all signs pointed to the fact that she was writing again and ready to head back into the studio.

Maybe her and Lindsey actually plan to make good on their claims of wanting to write a new Mac album together from the ground up? And she's biding her time while he finishes up his solo album?

Of course, I guess we should keep in mind that not a single bit of this info... the Vegas shows, the new "best of," the tour with Henley... has been confirmed yet. So we still have to wait and see if any or all of it actually happens.

The Vegas shows have been confirmed by both Taku and Jana Anderson. Taku will not be a backing player in Vegas due to the fact that he will have missed rehearsals for the shows while in Australia wrapping up Bette's tour. Jana will be backing Stevie once again and said the Vegas show dates are probably the second week of May. As far as summer tour, she said Vegas was all she knew about so far.

I only wish, in case the rumours were true, Stevie'll do also some dates in late September or October, because it would be a mess for me trying to come to see her before then. I find strange this Greatest Hits idea, mostly because she said she was writing songs for a solo album. Are they for the new FM cd then? Or will she include some of them in the GH? This at least could make her sing some of them live. :D Oh well... too many questions yet. About Henley, I guess I'll bring some crosswords for his parts of the concert. :)

Anything new with Stevie is good news to me...I think this is probably something that has been discussed, but not decided on yet..

Possibly shes planning a tour in PART with Don Henley as well as some solo shows..I wouldnt be surprised about this BEST OF STEVIE solo thing, I've been expecting it..Just like Fleetwood Mac's VERY BEST, sold a good amount--because so many ppl who bought the 1988 one may not have it anymore, forgot---whatever...

I for one would NOT be happy if Stevie was the opener for the show though..Id rather them do a real duet show if they are gonna do it..use the same backup band, join for some songs, and do some together...nice 3 hr show

I agree. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Why go back this direction when reuniting with Fleetwood Mac was such a boost to her career overall? She was doing the state fair circuit in the mid 90s. The Dance rescued her career from that. The Say You Will tour was enough of a success to warrant doing more Mac music. Going back to the greatest hits well too often, or doing a joint tour with no new music from either artist is a big step backward, imo.

I am gonna fly to Vegas, spend a ****load of money to see her and someone I cannot stand? I think Henley will share the stage with her in Vegas..to get ready for this summer thing.
Alot of the other decisions Stevie has been making really make me wonder what is going on. It seems pretty obvious the girl could not need money but she is certainly going down the route of grabbing the most cash fast. The Vegas residency gig, the double bill with Don, another GH package. Those are all about money and nothing about the fans. Perhaps her people see the end looming and want her to make them a truckload first.

I still have this feeling that we might not see a new album from her. I really have a feeling that she'll buy out her contract. Maybe this is some sort of agreement they've reached in order to make them part of the money back that they would inevitably loose if she didn't come out and make another album
 However, she'd still end up owing them money if she has two albums to go. It's total nostalgia overkill but I'm sure it'll make them a decent amount of money (the label...not necessarily Stevie herself). I suppose only time will tell though and hopefully i'm wrong.

I thought she really understod the vision that Stevie had for TISL and produced the hell out of it. Think of how much acclaim TISL garnered. It was an amazing album, IMO. So no, she certainly wasn't any worse than any of the aforementioned.

Great point! I concur! I like Sheryl Crow and her collaborations with Stevie. The thing about Sheryl is...she seems to show up everywhere, playing with everyone. Her overexposure comes close to overshadowing her talent...to the point where she is becoming known more as a celebrity than a rock and roller. Stevie was smart to keep some mystery and be more elusive.

Not sure what to think of the Henley Nicks tour. Great if we get to hear Highway Man...and dare say...some new duets!? But afraid it will be rehashed oldies tour.

I'd love love love to see her make an album and tour with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. That band really respects her and compliments her songs immensely. Plus Tom is a really mover/shaker. i.e. he had the balls to play his entire Last DJ album in concert, and then ended it with a few old favorites.

I bet his fans didn't complain one bit about the "hits" he didn't play. It was a great show and he displayed confidence and relevance by playing his new stuff. The audience was with him. Maybe some of that confidence can rub off on Stevie. Supposedly it already has - "That Made Me Stronger" - but I haven't seen it yet.

The record companies make most of their money from the sales of their artists' albums. The artists make more money on tour...I don't believe there is big profit margin for record companies.

By the way, I want to add that most every popular artist releases more than one greatest hits set over the course of their careers. Many of which were released with far less than fourteen years between them, and many without any new songs to round them out.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers has two greatest hits compilations and a boxed-set (they have two DVD video compilations too).
Springsteen has had three and a boxed-set.
David Bowie has had four (not counting the various compilations of his "early years" songs) and a boxed-set.
Heart has five greatest hits sets.
Aerosmith has had six (that I've counted) and two boxed-sets.

The list goes on.

As for the GH thing, Stevie has only put out two albums since her last GH, Timespace. Enchanted was basically another GH package....it has everything this new cd will have except perhaps one or two songs from TISL. I agree, I think she's been Stevie's best producer since Iovine. John Shanks is just awful, I hope and pray that he has nothing to do with a new Stevie album. Most of Stevie's best material on TISL was the material that Sheryl had a strong hand in and I think it's because Sheryl understands Stevie more than the other producers she's employed in the past. Other producers tend to give Stevie a very muddled sound, as if they're unsure of what they should do or what she wants. But Sheryl? She's tops.

Yes, but it's rarely the artist who actually releases so many GH compilations, it's the record company. Just look at Heart, Pat Benatar, Blondie, Bowie, etc. A lot of times it's the record company that puts them out and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the record company that is pushing for another Stevie compilation instead of Stevie herself. I remember when Aimee Mann had a new GH package coming out and she posted an open letter to her fans on her site, advising them not to buy it because it wasn't her that was releasing it, it was the record company and she didn't like it.

1975 The Best of Carly Simon
1990 Greatest Hits Live
1995 Clouds in My Coffee Box Set
2002 2 Disc Anthology
2004 Reflections: The Best of Carly Simon

The last one was the highest charting album she's had in the last 25 years.

I just hope Stevie pulls a Tina Turner and adds 3 or 4 new songs. None of the Carly hit sets have anything new.

It's a very real possibility that this might be one of those situations where the record company basically says, "We're putting this out whether you like it or not, so you can either work with us on it or stay out of it. End of story."

Hopefully Stevie will work with them, and add a few new songs to it.

And at the end of the day, it's always OUR choice whether or not we buy it. :)

He did a terrific job, IMO, capturing the "essence" that Stevie's best songs and albums have had, while... like Sheryl... adding something fresh to the mix.

Of course, I'm not someone who expects (or desires) left turns or "surprises" in the production of a Stevie Nicks album (I'm bringing this up, because I know the biggest complaint about Shanks is that his work sounded bland and homogenized -- which I disagree with).

I get the most enjoyment out of albums that fit alongside the rest of an artist's canon.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want them to record carbon copies of their past successes... I just prefer a cohesive sound. Something that feels like a natural progression, and not like I bought the wrong CD.

Shanks & Crow's production work, to my ears, sounded fresh and contemporary... but very much in keeping with the style that Stevie does so well. Sheryl's work was "better," but Shanks work was definitely not "awful," IMO.
So I couldn't have been more pleased with 'Shangri-La.' :D

Do you guys realize Sheryl's producing track record includes That Made Me Stronger, Too Far From Texas and It's Only Love. That leaves Candlebright and Sorcerer as her decently produced songs and probably the only real sheryl produced standout from Shangri La was Sorcerer. But the 3 best songs IMO come from John Shanks producing or simply Stevie herself. TISL is the best but Bombay Saphire is seriously an incredible song and Stevie does it all by herself.

But Saying that I don't want Sheryl OR John Shanks back if there's ever a new album. Or any of the other one time hacks she had produce that record. And if she records a new album she needs to go back to having a really sweet backing band. That's what I think sets her earlier stuff from her new solo stuff. Take a look at the liner notes of TISL, freaking every song features JOhn Shanks playing half the instruments or something. Go back to playing your songs live with a good band (like Russ Kunkle Bob Glaub Roy Biitan Bemont Tench and Waddy) and get a fraking good producer, hell produce it all yourself.

I personally love the sound of all seven tracks. :)

One thing I don't recall any of us touching upon in the past, is the fact that Stevie co-produced most of the tracks with Shanks and Crow.
I wonder what level of involvement she had... I'd assume it must have been something fairly substantial to warrant a co-production credit on those particular tracks as opposed to any of the others.

And if she records a new album she needs to go back to having a really sweet backing band. That's what I think sets her earlier stuff from her new solo stuff.
Go back to playing your songs live with a good band....I do agree that the tight "live band" sound of her earliest solo work sets it apart from her later albums, and gives those recordings a certain charm and vitality.

That's part of the reason I can't stand him, his production on Planets is lackluster at best, IMO. I still love the song itself, but the sound he gave it is a bit too cold for me.

Just because the songs themselves are lackluster, it doesn't mean the production is. That Made Me Stronger is a piece of stellar production to these ears, as much I despise the song, and the same goes for It's Only Love, which I adore completely. Don't forget, too, that Sheryl essentially produced Crystal and If You Ever Did Believe. While I'm not a huge fan of those two, I still think that next to Lindsey, she comes closest to understanding Stevie when it comes to production.

There is a live version out there... recorded at a Sheryl Crow club performance, where Stevie guested (a night or two prior to the release of 'Shangri-La').

Her voice sounds pretty good on it, but she can't remember the lyrics to save her soul. In fact, I don't think she sang a single line correctly after the first one.

Yes, I love it, her voice is wonderful on it, and the words make me think everytime how deeply Sheryl has been able to portray her. Actually I liked all the songs she played with Miss Crow that night. I think Stevie messed with all of them, but sounded so relaxed and willing to perform, that it makes me happy to listen to them.

Oh, c'mon. That is one of my favorite bootlegs ever, but not only is Stevie drunk as a skunk, but she sounds horrid on every track and Sheryl herself is straining quite a bit, too. Stevie comes up with notes we had never heard before. But I suppose it's worth it just for SDMHA, that sucker has me in hysterics every time I hear it.

I think like for Smile at You, it's a song that can take so many directions. But I liked what John Shanks did, he was able for me to echo the lyrics' strength with his baroque arrangement.

He certainly made it extravagant and elaborate, I'll give that to you. One of the things that I don't like about the TISL album, and Planets is a very good example of this, is that her voice was produced to have this very metallic sound to it. Her voice isn't as warm as it always is right off the bat and I think it's due to such lavish production; it's simply way too dense. Shanks just drives me bonkers in the end. Very bland and middle-aged artist AC-sounding. I would have loved to have seen Sheryl produce the whole thing.

Rock on Aimee Mann...one of the greatest songwriters of our time (right up there with Bernie Taupin). No only did she protest that erroneous compilation album...she pretty much said f-you to record industry machine.

Several years ago (after years of being screwed around by her big label) she submitted an album that they rejected, wanting something different. For the sake of her art, and not wanting to bow down the idiotic studio bosses, she bought the album back...and went completely independent! She released it herself. She's now on indie label and doing very well. She performs in Portland frequently, and I never pay more than $25 to see her. Much respect for Aimee. Check her out!

That would rock. She was supposed to sing it at AHI '01 and even talked about rehearsing it on the radio, but for whatever reason opted for Leather & Lace again. I think it would sound fantastic, and even if it missed the mark I'd admire her more for trying it than for going with the safe choice.

I actually like Don & wouldn't mind seeing him. I could do without the more expensive tix, shorter individual sets, and higher competition for good seats, but I'd still go. If I disliked the idea that much there's always the alternative of staying home . Who knows if it'll even happen.

Yes and they were produced well. You may not like these songs and hell, they may not be the best Stevie has ever done, but I think Sheryl did a damn fine job with what she had to work with. Sheryl also produced "If You Ever Did Believe" and "Crystal." I personally love the sound of all seven tracks.Sheryl's a capable producer & studio leader: she knows her stuff & she's got the chops, thanks in large part to the At-The-Knee Syndrome. I don't consider her one of the great producers -- she doesn't advance the craft, she just dwells within its parameters. But I don't think it's her aim to create a "cinematic" producer out of herself in the tradition of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson or George Martin.

I think "It's Only Love" is her best production on "Shangri-La"; the fuzz-jangle electric wending its way through the fabric is a toughening touch, & an obvious nod to Clapton.
One thing I don't recall any of us touching upon in the past, is the fact that Stevie co-produced most of the tracks with Shanks and Crow. I wonder what level of involvement she had... I'd assume it must have been something fairly substantial to warrant a co-production credit on those particular tracks as opposed to any of the others."Fairly substantial" is fairly vague. My guess is that Stevie doesn't sit at the board, or at least directly in front of it. Jimmy Iovine once told an interviewer on the radio how Stevie stood behind him (literally or figuratively) for the mixing of the live "Edge of Seventeen" for the 7-inch single. He pushed the sliders, she said "I like it" or "I don't like it." That's probably as good an indication as any of what she does in the studio when she's not laying down a vocal track. Seriously involved production & engineering in a recording studio -- especially these days -- takes a certain inclination of mind & a playful approach to technology that Stevie, Christine & John seem not to have or want.
I do agree that the tight "live band" sound of her earliest solo work sets it apart from her later albums, and gives those recordings a certain charm and vitality.I don't think you can hold "Bella Donna" or "The Wild Heart" up as examples of self-reflexive, producerly production. Iovine essentially brought the L.A.-area session players together, mic'd them properly (an engineering task that apparently Shelly Yakus played a part in), rehearsed them a bit, & then let them play . . . & that was how most or all of those tracks were done.

The tipoff is that when you watch them play a show from 1981, the song sounds almost exactly the way it does on the album (barring the variations in ambience & mix that you'd expect from a stage & a soundboard).

Iovine's "understanding" of Stevie is -- or was -- essentially nothing more than understanding that she & her band sounded good live, with clean, dry signals & a minimum of post-amp FX.

I never thought of that album in quite that way, actually, but I think you're right. For me, though, while I still like it, it's missing a lot of magic and it's way too poppy and fluffy for me. The self-titled one and The Globe Sessions were very dark albums, and C'mon C'mon is just pop with no real message or point. It doesn't really have any tracks like Redemption Day or Member's Only or Hard To Make A Stand, which I think is unfortunate. Her voice cuts through you on that sucker and the simplistic lyrics say it all.

I just pray that her new album isn't chock full of saccharine lovey-dovey material like her Don Henley duet on C'mon C'mon. Or I will positively die.

I also was a bit disappointed in C'mon C'mon but the London version with two extra tracks made the difference. Missing is probably my favorite Sheryl song and I Want You is fairly close to the top. Combine that with Diamon Road, her version of It's Only Love, Safe and Sound and you've got a great album. I typically do skip the first three tracks and Lucky Kid, but otherwise it's pretty good.

To get back on track: Any tour that occurs with or without Don Henley would be aces in my book. I would rather Stevie tour while she's still got the drive and record later on when she doesn't feel like touring.

That guy did kill himself but it wasn't because of Sheryl. He was a raging alcoholic and I think he was also manic depressive. The impression I got from No Fool to This Game (a Sheryl bio) is that the guy probably would have killed himself anyway due to his alcoholism and depression. I think the media tried to link it to Sheryl for sensationalistic reasons. I'm sure it didn't help matters when she didn't credit him on the album.

I think it definitely made her look like an opportunist. She made a lot of connections in the business early on and clawed her way to the top thereafter. I think she probably used some people and stepped on a few backs to get there. When I heard that she went on a late night talk show and claimed that Leaving Las Vegas was autobiographical I couldn't believe it. Actually, after I found out that only a few of the songs on TNMC were autobiographical it lowered my estimation of her. You can make up a story and sing about it, whatever. But when you sing something with conviction and try to present it to the world like it's a page out of your own life and then later say it was made up, then it feels like, as a fan, you've been deceived. It's disingenuous, and it tainted my view of Sheryl from then on. I still like her music, I like her voice, but I question her motives in the music biz sometimes. I question her authenticity as a musician.

Personally, I don't consider TNMC a Sheryl Crow album because it isn't. She was simply a part of a band at that time. I think she has incredible talent, but I do find her disingenuous, like you said. She's more of a celebrity these days, too. I mean, playing in the backyard at the Big Brother house? Doing concerts on airplanes for American Airlines? Ugh. But at the same time, we had Stevie telling us for years and years that her stage persona was her and she dressed like that offstage and so on, but then she told In Style a couple of years ago that it was pretty much BS.

Her voice *soars* on It's Only Love. The last minute of it, jeezum crow. My brain turns to mush and I get goosepimply all over.
Well, if we're gonna gush about Miz Crow then my choice would be-

"I crossed the canyon a thousand times...
But never noticed what was mine
What you'll remember of me tonight-
Well, it almost makes me cry
Yeah, it almost makes me cry!!"

That sucker is spine-tingling for me. Yeah- her eponymous album and The Globe Sessions are excellent albums.

However, all her other "celebrity" crap leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And I despise Tuesday Night Music Club. She just shrieks and shrieks and shrieks.... "Run, Baby, Run" is chinese water torture.

Well, in most photos of her offstage, she is in some flowing outfit  - granted it is not the "black dress" but it is similar  AND in more than one interview where she said that, the reporter noted that she was in some Stevie esq. garb.

I LOVED the song "C'Mon C'Mon" :

C'mon, c'mon
C'mon, c'mon c'mon
You lay down with angels
To feel yourself again
You¹ve got everything you need
Under your thick skin
I know where you're going
I know where you've been
When it comes to playin' games
You will always win o

CHORUS:
C'mon, c'mon c'mon
Break my heart again
For old times sake
C'mon, c'mon c'mon
Break my heart again
For old times sake o
You can't see your shadow
Reaching for the sky
Lay your head down on my bed
Please don't ask me why
Why am I leaving
Why don't I know
Something deep inside me
Is forcing me to go
You say you need me
But you can't tell me no
When I ask you to stop me baby
You just let me go

CHORUS

You took the best of me
And threw it away
Too bad the rest of me
Still wants you to stay
Want you to stay
You say you need me
But you can't tell me no
When I ask you to stop me baby
You just let me go
You just let me go

Perhaps because I have lived it from both sides  Ohhh where are those angels :o

All in all, I am not a huge fan, but I think she is a formidable talent and a nice person. I think she, like everyone else, fought to get where she is and that left a bad taste in peoples' mouths.

I didn't care for that one, I thought it was very cheesy. The opening line "You lay down with angels to feel yourself again" is so lame. Stevie sounded good on it, though. I like Sheryl when she writes her "stream-of-consciousness" songs like You're An Original and A Change. My favorites will always be Redemption Day, Member's Only, and Riverwide (that one is haunting). Doesn't get better than that for me! :D

I never heard that part.

I never heard that part.

They had a segment about it in her episode of Behind the Music and it was the first I had heard of it. It's all pretty strange, but she had also been accused of not giving the band their proper share of the credit and so on for the Tueday Night Music Club album.

I think it definitely made her look like an opportunist. She made a lot of connections in the business early on and clawed her way to the top thereafter. Interesting. I've never read the book, so I'm off to Amazon to check it out. I never knew that she claimed LLV was for real. The imagery of the song is great but it's not something I could readily associate with her personally.

 But at the same time, I don't question Stevie's authenticity. She is an original and I don't doubt for a second that that she is still in love with music. I don't get the sense that music is "just a job" for Stevie (even if she does go out on a GH tour this summer! ;) I've never gotten that vibe from her. Music is in her blood, there's no escaping that for her.

With regard to Sheryl, I have to wonder each time I hear something new from her whether she's doing it for the cash cow, (you know, business as usual) or because of her love and passion for music. I get the sense from Sheryl that her music career is only a job. C'mon C'mon didn't help matters as it was so utterly uninspired. Also, I kind of hated how she rode Stevie's coattails back when they were collaborting a great deal. It's like she wanted to be associated with Stevie at all times in the hopes that some of Stevie's star juice would rub off on her. I know this sounds harsh and I don't really mean for it to, but these are things that get on my nerves about Sheryl Crow. Like I said, she's talented and I like her but she needs to get back to the music and what music means to her instead of playing airplanes!

As far as General Admission goes for the Chevrolet Amphitheatre they dont always do that. I have been to shows that were only general admission but when lisa marie and chris isaak came last year they had it setup with seats and everything. The only area that was general admission was the back part which would be considered the lawn area at the post gazette. So I can guarantee that when Stevie comes there it will be setup the same way.

Regarding Sheryl, I personally dont care what she does in her life as long as she keeps on putting out more music. She posted on her website that her new album is done and should be out soon. I cant wait to hear it. She is a great musician, songwriter and producer.

Oh, I agree. C'mon C'mon was such a blatant attempt to sell lots of records that it did make you question Sheryl's authenticity. I mean, she was supposedly depressed and didn't even want to record it while it was being made, yet you don't get many glimpses of that when you listen to it. Instead, you get pop schlock like Steve McQueen and that godawful Henley duet. It's just crap for the most part.

With regard to Sheryl, I have to wonder each time I hear something new from her whether she's doing it for the cash cow, (you know, business as usual) or because of her love and passion for music. I don't think she rode her coattails, I think she's just a media whore and will take any exposure she can get. :xoxo: If she's working with another artist, she's going to milk it for all she can get out of it, that's her schtick and it's rather grating. But I also think Stevie benefitted *greatly* from it and I don't believe TISL would have been the big success it was without Sheryl's involvement.

For cripes sake, she may be a master at self-promotion, but it makes her look like such a flake. This Lance BS is already getting on my nerves. Overhaulin' on TLC? Surely you jest, Sheryl!

Agreed 100% Not only did Sheryl's involvment in the album give her a new sound that perhaps would not have come through with some other person in the producer role but it also gained Stevie new fans, IMO. I remember around the time TISL came out, Sheryl did a lot of press as did Stevie. Some of Sheryl's fans became Stevie's fans and some (clearly not all) of Stevie's fans became Sheryl's. All in all i'd say her relationship with Crow has been more positive rather than detrimental to Stevie and her career.

*Yawn* to a tour with Henley, IMO. My DREAM is a tour with Petty...why the HELL hasn't this happened yet???!!! It's so friggin' obvious!!! I love a lot of Henley and Eagles music, but I agree that we could expect a sky-high ticket price (what Henley charges is ridiculous, and there's a chance he could talk Stevie into charging more than ususal), and though it would be cool to see them collaborate on a couple of numbers, it's Petty who ROCKS and would spark some serious fire in Stevie! I'd much prefer to see that "influence" on Stevie's tour, as opposed to Don's which would be more intense and studious. I admire his intelligence and wit, and these aspects of him can be charming, but when it comes to bringing these things to a Stevie tour....once again, *yawn*.

Also, Insider anyone????!!!!!!!!!

I'm not too fussed whether Stevie Tours with Don Henley or not. Since i live in Sydney, Australia i haven't ever had the chance to see her live as a solo act (though i did see her twice in March last year when FM were in AUS)

I'm heading to Canada on a Working Holiday Visa in one months' time so *IF* she does do a tour this summer then this means i'll have a pretty good chance at seeing her *at least* once in the US

Any more news on this possible Vegas show in May? I have a choice either NOTS New York or Vegas, cant do both so wondered if anyone had any more news?

Eh, she is quite the opportunistic wench, but there's no denying she's incredibly talented and makes awesome music. That book, though, is devastating to her. No wonder she wouldn't cooperate with the author! Seriously, if you're not a fan, reading that book certainly won't make you one...

I, personally, liked it because it talks a lot about the songs themselves for TNMC and her self-titled album. Found all that stuff fascinating because I think she's an incredibly gifted songwriter.

I checked Amazon and it's out in paperback now, so you don't have to spring almost $30 for it. :woohoo: And they have the preface and intro on their site for people to read.

What is this book called ? I must have it.

As far as Sheryl being an opportunist....I have heard enough stories to know she is smart about who she gets to know, who she works with, and in the past, maybe even who she has slept with. Who cares ? Who hasn't done it ?

The people who work with her alone attest to her talent. The list of musicians as well trained, multi-talented, and down to earth that she can be compared to is short indeed. I find her dealings with the press and her absolute whoring out of her relationship with Lance Armstrong to be suspect and devoid of self respect, but it's her career. And even though Stevie is an icon because she has been around for a hundred years, Sheryl has a truckload of Grammies, she is hot as hell, and is tremendously respected by people in the industry. She had at least as much to offer Stevie as vice versa. When they first worked together, Stevie could hardly get arrested. 1996. Hello ? Our girl was a joke at the time.

The photo they used of her on the cover looks like Amy Brenneman to me, not Sheryl Crow.

I agree with all of that.

To me, while she may have been quite opportunistic and done ****ty stuff to further her career, she obviously had what it took and had the talent to back it up. It's just that the choices she makes and the way she whores herself out is just mind-boggling at times. Starbucks? American Airlines? Big Brother? WB teen shows? The First Cut Is the Deepest?!

Oh, and American Express. ;)

Oh, she has questionable judgement, to be sure. I wonder how beholden she is to her manager, and how many of these decisions just get made without her.
Nonetheless, she is making truckloads of money, and is wise to make hay while the sun shines. It's not as if she isn't also creating very respectable art, and laying the groundwork to become a legend. For god's sake, the Beatles had lunchboxes, socks, and candy made with their images. Yoko is still whoring poor John's art at the drop of a hat. That's worse than anything Sheryl has done. She is making some stupid moves, but none of them are career killers.

Like I said, I like her collaborations with Stevie. I think she's a kick ass producer of Stevie's things and they do harmonize well. But on the other hand, there are things that annoy me about her. Let's just say that I kind of have a love/hate thing with Sheryl Crow.
Yeah, Sheryl kinda bugs me sometimes, too- in a love/hate way. I despise Tuesday Night Music Club and first impressions have a way of lingering around. The next two albums were great, but I still have the bad taste of the first item. And her gums on her upper teeth are way too exposed and that grosses me out....

I don't think her production on TISL was all that stellar- just straightforward AAA rock, nothing new. However, I do think she's a great musician and a great singer. I would probably be more impressed with her songwriting abilities if she actually sat down and wrote an entire album on her own without having to collaborate with other people. That's just me, though.

As to riding on Stevie's coattails, I don't really think that happened because Sheryl didn't need a ride and Stevie was wearing a jacket at the time so, I don't think there was much fabric for Sheryl to hang on to.

That's the biggest flaw I've always seen in the "Sheryl was riding Stevie's coattails" argument.

When Stevie & Sheryl first met and dipped their toes into the waters of working together, Stevie was coming off of her lowest selling album and pretty much the lowest point in her career, in general.

Tom Petty might have gotten a song written about him for his words of encouragement, but, through her deeds, I think Sheryl is probably just as responsible for helping Stevie regain her confidence, and recapture the spark that had always driven her. If not moreso.

It wasn't a "riding coattails" thing -- it was a demonstration of mutual love, admiration and respect.

If asking someone to write their songs because they can't seem to have a hit anymore isn't riding on the coattails of another's fame, then I dunno what is?

But I see what you're getting at. ;)

I think the relationship between Stevie and Sheryl definetely helped Stevie. I don't know that Sheryl benefited out of it, except for friendship maybe gained some fans as well... MANY Sheryl fans bought TISL, if you would have posted on Sheryl's board when the album came out, long time Sheryl fans, some very young, who didn't know much about Stevie at ALL bought TISL just because Sheryl was on it--and were eventually turned on to Stevie... The same as many of us fans buy an album, IE CMON CMON because of Stevie's contributions...

Like Sheryl's contributions or not, I don't think there's any denying that it was a beneficial relationship. Not only was Stevie talking in interviews, like people normally do for promotion--Sheryl was mentioning Stevie in SOME way nearly in EVERY interview she gave...they always say, no promotion is bad promotion..

I think it was a win-win situation for Stevie. She aligned herself with a respectable artist, not some new pop chick..so I think it worked..and I agree that had Sheryl not been involved at all, TISL would not have done as well as it did. Of course we all know it was no blockbuster, but it had a nice debut and moderate success..

I was a Sheryl Crow fan before I was a Stevie fan - she's been successful since her debut album  - so I agree that Stevie's the benefiary out of that relationship :)

But I don't really sit around analyzing their relationship...I'm a fan of both so I was thrilled when they started doing stuff together....I'm still a huge fan of both :D

I agree completely.

And about leaving a bad taste...Sheryl did that for me when she claimed someone else's writing as her own (LLV) and not only that, but also claiming that it was autobiographical. Sorry but that's poor form imo.

She also didn't give the TNMC players much credit for anything on that album and they are the ones who created it for her, the sound, the style, all the arrangements, everything. Ethics anyone?
