Gas prices might increase 24 cents
Fri Mar 4, 6:19 AM ET Business - USATODAY.com
By James R. Healey, USA TODAY
Gasoline prices could rocket 24 cents a gallon the next few days, as stations across the USA scramble to keep up with big jumps in the prices of oil and wholesale gas, a veteran energy-price analyst forecast Thursday.
"It's going to be brutal, horrendous," says Peter Beutel, president of energy-price tracker Cameron Hanover. He has followed energy markets for nearly three decades.
Thursday, light, sweet crude oil for April delivery traded as high as $55.20 a barrel in New York before closing at $53.57.
A 24-cent jump in the price of gas would bump unleaded regular to a nationwide average of about $2.16 a gallon, blowing through last May's record of about $2.06. It could go higher as increased warm-weather driving in another two months pushes up demand, and therefore prices, forecasters say.
Adjusted for inflation, gas would have to hit about $2.95 for a record.
The price increase translates to "$90 million a day, every day that it remains in effect," which could be several months, Beutel says.
"Petronoia is in full flower. Retail gasoline has some 25 to 28 cents a gallon in increases ahead just to catch up to what has happened with wholesale (gas prices) since Christmas week," says Tom Kloza, senior analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. He foresees a record-breaking peak but not until the last half of this month. "What I can't determine is whether that level will last, like it did last year" or drop back as refineries ramp up gasoline production.
Petronoia is Kloza's description of when petroleum traders become irrationally afraid there won't be enough oil and gasoline later, so they buy now, bidding up prices.
The government's short-term-energy-price expert thinks the analysts are overreacting. Oil and wholesale gas prices have increased a lot, agrees Michael Burdette, senior analyst at the U.S. Energy Information Administration, but it takes about eight weeks for those changes to be completely reflected in pump prices. "In the next eight weeks, (wholesale gas) prices will change, so it's a moving target." At worst, he sees a dime jump in the near future.
Seasonal maintenance and other disruptions had U.S. refineries operating at just 89.3% capacity last week, lowest in four months, making traders jumpy about supplies.
The U.S. dollar has fallen in value recently, also, and foreign oil sellers, who control most supplies, want more dollars per barrel to compensate.
Those factors outweigh the U.S. government's midweek report showing ample supplies. U.S. inventories of crude oil, from which gasoline is made, were up a hefty 8.6% from a year ago and up 0.8% from the previous week. Supplies of gasoline were up 10.1% from a year ago, and even with a week ago.

It jumped from $1.89 to $2.09 yesterday!!!!!!!!!!! I think that's the record high.
I was wanting to trade my SUV for a newer one this year, but I'm seriously considering keeping this one for bad weather, and buying a Honda or Toyota for all other use.
But I also own a U-haul that gets 5.5 mpg. I almost can't afford to take any jobs out of town anymore. $60 for one tank of gas!

I just told my dad. He hadn't heard yet and usually he knows everything a while in advance. He's pissed. I mean, really really pissed. We own a gas station and he ends up putting out more money to buy and doesn't make a lot off of it. I don't know if you guys are aware of this either but here in the state of NJ, when you buy diesel fuel, your taxed by the federal government and then partially by the state. At the end of the month, the state of NJ makes you fill out paperwork that you must send to them and they end up getting .13 1/2 cents per gallon--it's paid directly to the state of NJ. There's a lot of other things that make absolutely no sense that goes on that if I got him on here, he'd rage about that most people probably aren't aware of.
It's as low as 1.76 here....

I got lucky though...I pulled up to pump gas, and the guy came out and said they were out of regular and med. grade, so I could have premium for the price of unleaded  Don't know how much of a difference it will make...since I NEVER get premium! If you get a compact Honda or Toyota you cannot go wrong. I have a subcompact Toyota and the gas mileage was amazing when it was newer and now it is still excellent. 52 mpg highway is what I believe was the claim and I think that it was close to reality. When I first got it it was $10 - $12 to fill it! Man, where does the time go? Where does my money go? (check shopping thread)
Do a search on google for Honda gas mileage. Then another for Toyota gas mileage and see what you get.

Thanks. I was hoping maybe someone had owned both, and could tell me their real preference(maybe there's not a big difference). My aunt has a 95 Tercel (with about 60k miles!) that she was wanting to trade in. As SOON as I told her I'd give her at least what the lot would give her, her daughter instantly wanted it as a second vehicle. She had no interest in it before I spoke. She can't even afford two vehicles! But, at least she kept me from getting it. Oddly, we're as close as two cousins can be....
I'd KILL for 52 mpg!!!! A trip to Nashville in my Blazer takes two 20 gal tanks roundtrip. Really about 35 gals, or $70. Lessee, at 52 mpg, it would take me about 10-12 gals, or $20-24! Yep, I GOTTA make a change.

I'm able to haul 8 "intelligent" moving lights, IN their relatively big cases to jobs. Without the SUV, I'd be driving my Uhaul, using THREE times as much gas. Try that in a Nissan Sentra. :woohoo: Just because alot of people don't use them for hauling, doesn't mean everybody doesn't use them for that.
Also, there have been two night IN the past week that I couldn't have gotten home from work without 4WD.

Can you get a smaller SUV? Or will that still be too small? I've been looking into them. I really wanted a Saturn VUE, but I've heard reliability isn't good after a few years (per Consumer Reports.) I'm considering a Jeep Liberty, mainly cuz I've always bought American & I'm having a hard time dealing with possibly not doing so in the next year or so. I've heard they're not all that comfortable though.
The best rated small SUVs (according to CR) as far as safety, mileage, features, reliability, etc are Honda CRV & the Toyota whatever. I can't afford either. I was loving the (I can't believe I'm about to say this...) Hyundai Tuscon at the auto show last month. 4WD w/ everything for under $20,000. But 99% of the damn thing is made in Korea. I don't know, I just don't know.
Why the hell are all the affordable and safe and stylish vehicles made overseas? Rhetorical question, I know why. Just pisses me off.

Unions. They don't want to pay our American working men and women to produce good, quality automobiles. It's all about the bottom line.
Plus the Germans and the Swedes have us whipped when it comes to engineering. Probably has something to do with their superior system of education.

When I was in college, I was driving past a car garage and a ****ing tire comes rolling out into the street, I hit it, and it bounced into the air and into the back window of a minivan. I felt really bad, but I also felt kind of happy in a sick way.

My theory is: Avoid the lane with the minivan in it. They almost ALWAYS drive 10mph under the speed limit. And, while we're vehicle ranting- on a 4+ lane, the LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Move the HELL OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite was honking at people who wouldn't pull over into the pullout lane on the fun, harrowing, windy (wine - dee) drive to Stinson Beach...
"pullovah! pullovah!"
Hello, is me riding your tail a clue?
*sigh* and they say impatience isn't a virtue...

Don't even get me started on those Hummers, though. Every time I see one, I feel something evil come over my person and just want to jump on the hood and take a piss on it. :oMe too! Ugh! Have you ever seen a Hummer limo? I haven't, but I've heard that they exist.

My friend Rain drives a minivan, but she has 3 kids and a husband, and the kids' friends. So I have to forgive her...She drives pretty well, though, but when she's here, I have to be all "This isn't Chico, you have to drive faster! and jet outta the lights! C'mon! Ok, switch lanes!"

Truly. I wish I carried a sledgehammer with me for the moments I am stopped at a light with them. Not that they would ever know.

Voted for Bush? They'll reap what they've sown.

That was a whole TV show? I thought it was just a catchphrase, or, at the very most, a cartoon...

I do think Honda/Toyota is like apples/oranges. I travel up north which is about 180 miles round trip. This doesn't even take me a full tank of gas, probably 3/4 which is about 6 gallons! My car is probably the equivalent to the Tercel re mileage, it is a Paseo, which they don't make anymore.
Damn your cousin, how dare she rip that out from under you like that!
My ex had a Honda Civic while I had the Toyota Paseo and he felt they were both da bomb.

I saw a red shiny one at the Mt Washington hotel this weekend with plates saying MYOB. It was obscene. I see the limos in the North End all the time, very silly.
When people first started buying up asSUVs I was surprised by how many people didn't care that they were gas guzzling polluting machines. Idiots.

I think Honda's look a little cooler, so that's probably the first one, although mpg is my ultimate choice(I can feel my SUV manhood shrinking as I type this.) Seriously. :( FWIW, I LOVE being up in the air, where I can SEE everything around me.

Well, we're so close, we're more like brother/sister, and she's always competed for anything I've wanted. She's NOT a real go getter. Only for what I want.

What about the Honda CRV? The hybrids claim 51mpg, the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic hybrid. The Prius has a futuristic, sporty look. I must have smoked too much crack or somethng to think my car would have gotten 50mpg like I stated earlier. It was probably more like 40. Woops, my bad.

Fortunately, I can take metro to work and most everything else is within walking distance. I still have a car but I only use it once every couple of weeks. I'm thinking about selling it all together, it actually feels liberating NOT driving a car.

Even 40 sounds like a dream, compared to 15/19 mpg. Thanks.

Same here. Although I don't think I'm going to sell it though I have thought about that. I walk to work which is fabulous. It's free and it's good for me. I hope that sort of cancels out the years I commuted 350 miles per week. Thank god I don't have to do that anymore.
