Gay school club splits Cleveland

CLEVELAND — In a North Georgia community that values politeness next to godliness, what would incite students at the lone high school to jeer a 16-year-old classmate as she walked down the auditorium aisle, rose in hand, during the annual Valentine's Day assembly?

In the words of senior Stephen Milhollin, Kerry Pacer did something "unheard of in White County": She founded a club for gay students and their allies.

The possibility that the Gay-Straight Alliance soon will be meeting at White County High School has swept this town of two traffic lights into a state of anxiety as it waits for the controversy to be resolved at tonight's school board meeting, if it's resolved at all.

The undercurrent in the debate is more Old South vs. New than straight vs. gay. As newcomers have flocked to the Georgia mountains, they have brought with them attitudes and assumptions at odds with Appalachia's deep-seated conservatism. An uneasy détente usually prevails, but sometimes the volatile mix of ideas combusts.

"You say the word 'gay' around here and people run and hide," said Cheryl Fister, a 42-year-old transplant from Ohio who arrived seven years ago with her husband and daughter. "We were all put on earth by a loving God. If you're with somebody you truly love, even if they're of the same sex, you must be doing the right thing."

A town divided

A native son doesn't see things that way. "If these kids feel that being gay is completely normal, then why are they putting their sexuality on parade?" asked Kenneth Monroe, 56, a feed supplier who traces his family's roots here to the early 1800s. "It's not the kind of thing that goes over well in the mountains."

The founding of the GSA seemed like a done deal earlier this month when a group of students led by Kerry, her mother and a member of a homosexual rights advocacy group approached the school administration. Paul Shaw, the school superintendent, told them the GSA might be formed as long as it met the criteria for all extracurricular clubs.

"The administration is opposed to this action, but the Equal Access Act requires that students be allowed to form a club if there are other noncurricular clubs operating at the school," Shaw said in an e-mail to the school faculty. "It has been suggested that I spend tax dollars to fight the law. I do not believe I need to spend tax dollars on a case that cannot be won."

As word spread, the atmosphere in Cleveland, birthplace of the Cabbage Patch dolls, became charged. Calls jammed phone lines at the school's office. Letters to the editor of the local weekly teemed with opposition to the club. And beyond the booing of Kerry, her younger sister Lindsay was told to change when she wore a shirt to school that the administration "considered inflammatory," according to Savannah Pacer, the girls' mother. The shirt displayed the word "hate" with a diagonal line through it.

Worried about what was coming from the pulpit, Shaw visited last week's meeting of a local ministerial association to "ask us to tone down the rhetoric," said the Rev. Phil Hoyt, a Methodist pastor.

Amid the furor, the students provided the school with a list of the club's six members, bylaws and the name of a faculty adviser, a ninth-grade English teacher. The GSA has begun to meet informally, with Kerry as president, but the high school "is trying to thwart its formation by stalling" on formal approval, said Beth Littrell, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union's Georgia chapter, which is advising the GSA. "These kids have done everything that every club" at the 1,000-student school has "done to get officially sanctioned."

Despite the superintendent's advice, the White County Board of Education might bow to community pressure and ban the GSA, although a legal challenge from the ACLU would likely.

Having moved to White County a decade ago, the Pacers, who have lived in several other states, are among the newcomers. Savannah Pacer, a native of New Jersey, is active in Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, an organization that counsels the five GSA clubs already existing in Georgia schools.

The incident in the auditorium illustrates how passions have filtered down from adults to kids. Clutching a rose given to her by a female classmate, Kerry, an openly gay junior, joined a procession at the Sweetheart Assembly the Friday before Valentine's Day. Boos filled the air as Kerry followed in step.

"Everyone at school is like 'It's against God. It's against God,' " Kerry said. "They tell me God is watching me, but who is watching them?"

Cultural change

Kerry said Principal Bryan Dorsey had made it clear "he wouldn't make us jump through hoops to get started, but that's basically what he's done." Dorsey has not returned recent phone calls seeking comment. He did respond once, right after news of the club spread, saying he "would not tolerate threats, intimidation or bullying."

Kerry's face is well known in Cleveland, although it's usually shaded by the bill of the purple cap she wears to work at a popular sandwich shop. She was an object in motion Sunday morning, filling orders for the after-church crowd.

A brisk walk from the shop is the Cleveland United Methodist Church, where Hoyt delivers the 11 a.m. sermon. A New Yorker by birth, Hoyt has spent the past 20 years ministering to North Georgia congregations. All the communities he's familiar with are in the grip of cultural change, he said, including White County. "A lot of folks who are moving in have different life experiences, different ideologies," he said. He regards the controversy around the GSA essentially a "theological problem."

"Part and parcel of a lot of these mountain towns is the centrality of religion," he said. "They're already sensitive to change, and here comes a challenge to their moral convictions."

At the Kountry Kupboard, up the highway from the church, the back section is considered the locus of Cleveland's small talk and gossip. Fister, a cashier, looked over her shoulder in mock fear as she talked about "coming to the Bible Belt."

"We wanted to get away from the grime and the noise and the crime," she explained. "We wanted somewhere we could live off the land and purify our souls."

But Fister conceded she cordons herself off from local people when controversy flares because her views conflict so much with theirs. "When the talk turns to gays, it eventually turns to religion," she said. "That's when I kind of bow out."

This is why when people say "I do not have hate for gay people but they are against God" - I think it is hate and they are wrong. The people booing the poor gay girl in this article are kids, not adults. The people saying hateful things like "God is watching you" are kids, not adults. Where did they learn to behave like this? Well, they learned it from their pastors and parents. Interestingly, I highly doubt that the kids having premarital heterosexual sex or otherwise unrepentently sinning are willing to turn that high moral judgement on themselves. That would be too honest and less hypocritical

AND - this statement pretty much sums it up - "If these kids feel that being gay is completely normal, then why are they putting their sexuality on parade?" - that, in a nutshell means go back in the closet so "we" other unrepentent sinners do not have to look at you.

Thus, the state of rural Georgia and I suggest most of rural America.

  that caught my eye as well...in my high school there were so many queer kids they pretty much stopped trying to do anything lol - I once got some negative remarks from a vice-principal though on a shirt I was wearing that said, "Hate is not a family value" how dare I.

The vprincipal told me I would later regret doing things like that and boxing myself into one label..lol....I'd like to see her now old prude...

Anyway - that story is sad - and it just makes me sick - I feel like this country is on a major backslide in terms of issues such as these :distress:

I was told in 8th grade to not even bother trying out for the snare drum line in high school because "freshman were never good enough to make it" well...I am SO glad I didn't let that asshole stop me from trying out - because I made it my freshman year and it turns out the band director had been scouting me out for the last year of middle school :p - I"ll never forget going up to the jerk who told me not to try out at our first game with my snare drum on lol..the look on his face was priceless :p

VERY NICE Deanna! I want to know where the counselors were, I never saw one and man oh man did I need guidance! Apparently you had to seek them out. Whatever. Maybe they wouldn't have even helped me, who knows. No one helped me with my college applications and stuff and I couldn't ask for help, still have trouble with that. So I only applied to one school and thankfully got in. But for my ego it would have been cool to be accepted to a few! :D

I didn't have any help with my college app either - I did the same thing - applied to one and got it - no actually I also applied to a school in Chicago and got accepted - but I couldn't afford to go - didn't have any guidance in how to apply for financial aid, scholarships etc...:distress:

But yeah - I think things worked out for the best - and how they were supposed to work out for me :) I couldn't ask for more in my life right now....:D

Walt must be doing veritable SPINS in his grave! Oh the indignity! Our degenerating FAMILY VALUES!

on a side note, many of the original Fairy Tales were much darker and more graphic, I believe it was the Brothers Grimm who sanitized them and softened them for mass consumption...I read something a long time ago by Tanith Lee that was more along the lines of the original Snow White or Rose Red (I forget which) but I wish that these original tales were more available, I'd like to read more of them

The Grimm's are the ones who made them so dark to begin with, but with each new edition, they lessened the sex and incest and instead intensified the violence. If you can get them from the library, get these books:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811816753/qid=1109356404/sr=8-6/ref=pd_ka_1/102-4536514-8786567?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

I'm a fairy tale buff, so I've read the original stories and they're darker than dark. Incest, rape, child abuse, serial killers; the works.

I read the excerpt of the first book you listed above. Gorgeous. Macabre in the best way, I just HAVE to read these. Thanks for the tip, I have never heard of these.

And I love this, "...the stories collected in the nineteenth-century folktale anthologies ...had their origins in an irreverent peasant culture that arose in conscious opposition to the feudal state's ruling class. By overdoing it in the realm of storytelling, these narrators were able to alleviate--if only temporarily--some of the tedium that marked the daily life of their audience ... "

I like them, too, my mom had this giant book of original creepy fairy tales that were very different. Snow White and Rose Red sticks out in my mind the most, but they were all way better than the washed out fairy tales.

Did you watch Faerie Tale Theatre when you were a kid? I was HUGE with those things. I couldn't believe it when they released every episode on DVD last month. I snapped that sucker up faster than I'd snap Jake Weber up off my doorstep. I love all of them, they're truly great.

And I used to go to the Saturday matinees to see the Cannon Movie Tales with my grandma, too. My favorites were Hansel and Gretel with Cloris Leachman and Beauty and the Beast with Rebecca De Mornay!

I think I did not watch it, maybe a couple of times. Yeah, wasn't it real life people acting out fairy tales? If it's the one I'm thinking of. Yeah, I just looked it up, that's the one. I didn't really like kids shows with real life actors, or muppets, either, when i was a kid. I liked cartoons only, or, just regular adult shows. I actually would probably enjoy it more now. Have you watched them? Are they good to you as an adult? Oh, by the way, I have $3213 in my pocket, so I think i'm finally gonna rent some movies this weekend. I will get Wendigo, for sure - :D

Oh, I've watched them over and over and over and over, they're just fabulous. The budgets were very low, but the stars attached to them was jaw dropping. Shelley Duvall, Robin Williams, Susan Sarandon, Billy Crystal, Ellen Barkin, Lesley Ann Warren, Christopher Walken, Klaus Kinski, Anjelica Huston; the list goes on. And a lot of the humor was very adult, I dig it. When it comes to fairy tales, I don't think anything beats that show. Shelley Duvall produced it and you can just tell that a lot of love went into making it a fantastic show.

"

Plot Summary for
Wendigo (2001)
George is a high-strung professional photographer who is starting to unravel from the stress of his work with a Manhattan advertising agency. Needing some time away from the city, Jake, his wife Kim, and their son Miles head to upstate New York to take in the winter sights, though the drive up is hardly relaxing for any of them. George accidentally hits and severely injures a deer that ran onto the icy road; after George stops to inspect the damage, he's confronted by an angry local named Otis who flies into a rage, telling George that he and his fellow hunters had been tracking the deer for some time. An argument breaks out, which leaves George feeling deeply shaken. When George and Kim arrive at their cabin, they discover that it's next door to Otis' property, and they soon find that a dark and intimidating presence seems to have taken over the cottage. Since, when they stopped at a store en route to the cabin, a shopkeeper told Miles about the legend of the Wendigo, a beast from Indian folklore who is half-man, half-deer, and can change itself at will, the child begins to wonder if the creature might have something to do with his family's sudden misfortune."

Guess What, guess what!? I went and got Wendigo and Heavy, but that wasn't the exciting part. I was walking over to "Horror, Monsters" to get Wendigo, and I looked over, and saw a category called "Cult Actresses". So of course i had to go look. Isabelle Adjani was right at the top (i don't think she's cult, but whatever, I have a cult like love for her :p ) And they had all the usuals, but then I spied one I hadn't heard of!!!! :blob1: :]
It's called "Mortelle Randonnee" (Deadly Run) and here's what the back says:
"Catherine (Isabelle Adjani) is a seductive predator - a serial killer who lures wealthy men to their death. Beauvoir (Michel Serrault), a solitary detective know as "The Eye", is in pursuit. Convinced she is his long lost daughter, he shadows her through Europe, concealing incriminating evidence and helping her elude the police. But when Catherine falls in love with a blind artist (Sami Frey), Beauvoir's jealousy leads to a fatal accident, which once again sets her on a murderous path. Based on the best selling novel "The Eye of the Beholder" by Marc Behm, blah blah, nominated for five french Cesar awards."
:blob1: :blob1: Yay! Nothing better than Isabelle when she's crazy, which is always!!!! oh, 1982. Had to share, I'm so excited! :wavey:

My weakness is Snyder's honey mustard pretzel pieces. I hate mustard with a passion, but those? Are divine.

I've only seen a couple of episodes, but Jennifer Beals IS hot. She seems to have gotten hotter over the years, sort of like Virginia Madsen. *fans self*

Sideways rocks, man. I love Paul Giamatti and I love Virginia Madsen, so I almost had an orgasm when I saw the trailer for the first time. Love Sandra Oh, too, she's a riot.

I don't think Alexander Payne has made a bad movie. Election, Sideways, About Schmidt; every one was hysterical to me.

I thought Sandra Oh was good in it. I just could not get into and did not buy into that whole teo guys on the road thing. Plus, I thought it looked like some idiot got a hold of a handycam and said, hey let's shoot a movie  Interestingly, I LOVED Election :she has the wettest (*&&^ I have ever seen" and, my fav., "PICK FLICK" :wavey:

Myth of the Fingerprints...never heard of that one - I actually only knew of Laurel Holloman because of The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love - one of my favorite movies in high school....lol - I once had a movie night for a bunch of band kids and made everyone watch that - luckily everyone liked it - or maybe they were being polite :D

Anyway - she was a bit too butch for me in that movie - so I like the softer her in L Word :D

And Strand!?! I can't believe you didn't like Sideways - you're like Elaine and the English Patient lol...I thought Sideways was great - I was thrilled that I left feeling as though I got my money's worth :D

Really? I thought Sideways was awesome, made me feel warm and fuzzy. Virginia Madsen just made you melt and Paul Giamatti is so likable it should be a crime. And Thomas Hayden Church is just hilarious. I've loved him since Wings. :woohoo:

Did you ever see Citizen Ruth? I still think that's one of Payne's best movies and it's one of the funniest I've ever seen.

Last time he came over, though, I told him to be quiet like, 3 times. He was here for six hours though, talking the whole time, and he arrived just after I got home from work so I didn't get any alone time. I'm glad you liked it, but I would have been livid. I want someone to take care of me when i'm sick, at least a little. But then, i'm a huge baby when i get sick cause it rarely happens.
