I was just wondering what people like to do in their spare time. Tell us about it.

I really don't do too much right now. I am trying to get into photography. I seem to like it. I collect Fleetwood Mac stuff but I have not done that in a while. I go though phases I guess. A few years back I used to be into metaphysical studies but I lost interest after a while.

I read a lot - anything - but right now I have decided to get caught up on my childhood reading lol - I never read Laura Ingalls Wilder books as a kid - so I'm reading them now :D

I like to write
paint
rollerblade or bike
watch movies
make jewelry (though haven't in a long time)

I used to make candles - until a pan full of hot melted wax spilled onto my hand - that was SO painful - I haven't made candles since :p

Apparently, sitting at my computer is now a hobby. I read excessively. I like to play outside. I like to play Volleyball and Softball, but haven't been lately. Letting my cats in and out at their whim. Sometimes I make jewelry. Singing. Yoga. I like movies, but don't watch as many as I want. Oh, and I became addicted to Crystal Maze this weekend.

I exercise every day, though I don't necessarily enjoy it.

I read a lot. Lately re-immersed in the novels of Graham Greene. I'm also terribly crafty- I crochet, mainly. Some knitting. I sew. Can work with beads and other forms of jewelry, and lots of papercraft- specifically origami. Drinking was a hobby- one I can't have anymore. And if drinking counts, then so does smoking- since I tend to roll my own. That's a hobby!!

My mom crochets - and I've always wanted to learn - I'm hoping she'll teach me next time I'm home - it just seems like such a calming hobby - and she makes the most beautiful blankets - I've got three of them at home and I think I've got another one waiting for me in New Mexico :D

The usual... when I have money I like to go to movies (or rent) and concerts or comedy shows. I'm such a geek for museums, art galleries, documentary screenings, IMAX films, etc. I used to go horsebackriding a lot when I was a kid (never had lessons or anything though) but it's pretty expensive now. Taking pictures, fiddling with computer stuff, reading, swimming, trying to find things to be involved in on campus, volunteering, hanging out at the beach. I used to sketch, but not so much anymore. Collecting FM stuff, discovering new music.... Is shopping a hobby? That too.

Yeah ditto on the computer thing. It's like frickin heroin. LOL

Things I enjoy doing daily:

Surfing the net
Watching TV
Listening to music

Things I love to do, but don't seem to do anymore :( :

Write poetry and stories
Bowl
Rollerskate
Play guitar

Things I'd like to take up as a hobby:

Painting (I can't draw for crap...I would just like to see what I'm capable of making.)
Singing (I sing when I'm home alone, but I wish I had the guts to sing in front of others.)

Well let's see -

I seem to collect animals - currently own 21 hermit crabs, 4 rats, 4 bettas, 2 cats, and a toad.
I collect cds and movies - own approximately 400 of each
I used to collect Charming Tails figurines, but have run out of space for them.
Even though I'm really just a Buckingham fan, I still collect Fleetwood Mac stuff - including solo material from Stevie and Christine. I also buy anything Walter Egan releases - even the Brooklyn Cowboys stuff, which I don't like.
I like to write short fiction stories and am in the process of writing my first novel. I'm not a prolific writer, though. I'm too perfectionistic with my work and get blocked too frequently to get anything completed in a reasonable amount of time. If anybody's interested, you can download (MS Word files) three of my stories at http://missvicky.741.com/fiction.html
I am also a Renaissance Faire nerd. I have two different costumes, both pirate costumes but one is a dress and the other is basically a man's outfit (and I started wearing them long before the Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out). Of course a friend of mine swears that it's not so much a Ren Fair costume as it is my "weekend outfit." Since part of my costume includes two different whips, a flogger, and leather cuffs. Okay, so I have something of a bondage fetish... so what? They actually stay boxed up except when the Faire's in the area.

I think that's basically it.

I spend time going to auctions and antiquing. I sell antique and vintage items on ebay (part-time) and have a booth in two local antique malls. I find it very interesting and a fun way to learn about all types of things.

It is the furthest thing from my legal career, and that is a very good thing!

Wow, Curtis, you lead quite the exciting life. I would try to hang out with you, but I don't know if I could keep up with you, reading nursing books and all...

JK - hey, do you want mine? :wavey:

I read, mostly fiction.
Love to go to/rent movies, but I don't as much as I'd like.
I like scrapbooking, but I haven't been into it in a while. I'm making one for my Goddaughter's first birthday next month.
LOVE photography, but I've never taken any classes or anything.
Camping. Cabin, tent, whatever. We go at least 3 times every summer.
Walking (at parks, through the neighborhood, doesn't matter)

OK, I just realized - my oh my, don't I lead an exciting life...

Oh um, ok, alrighty then. Just for ****s and giggles or an active, functioning fetish?

****s and giggles.

Like I said, they stay boxed up except when I'm going to the Ren Faire, and then they do nothing more than hang from my belt, along with my dagger and other assorted trinkets.

I have amassed quite a collection of metal handcuffs though. I have four pairs, one of which has fuzzy covers to go over it for comfort. :D (I only actually bought one pair of cuffs - and not the fuzzy pair, either - the rest have been given to me.)

I am as single as they come, so all that stuff just gets stored away and not used.

When it's been others' scripts, short dramas without much of a point but aesthetically appealing cinematography. Most young filmmakers seem to want to tell their story, what makes this worse is that most don't actually have a story but like making angsty films because they look good. The trouble is that most audiences don't give a **** and just want to be entertained, which suits me fine because I love comedy. I've only turned one of my own scripts into a film (actually 2 but the legalities resulted in friends threatening to sue) and this was a mockumentary. Not in-your-face comedy, more a case of highlighting film structure by changing it slightly and catching the audience off-guard right when they think they're in a serious moment. This particular one was a real documentary about pet funeral directors. The elements of comedy worked as we hoped when the audience tried not to laugh due to the subject of death, but found that they couldn't help themselves. I love making them feel bad about laughing and generally taking the piss out of our subjects.....although I haven't yet faced them with a copy of it so that won't be so enjoyable.

Your documentary sounds very interesting, especially for the comedy elements  . Are you thinking to send your work to festivals? It's a good way to promote it and find a distribution.

Woah, crapping on a lot. I like subtle comedy that takes the piss out of my society and film structure itself. Perhaps I could make a porn film that mocks itself. Or perhaps I could just make straight porn.......hmmm. Actually I did start to write a porn script with someone once but it turned into some Kubrick style piece and then I realised he wanted me to be in it and I swiftly backed off.

Tsai Ming Liang has just done the same with Tian bian yi duo yun. It's a porn movie that mocks itself, mixed to a crazy comedy, a musical and the usual essay about contemporary loneliness. It has just won a prize at Berlin Film Festival not that it proves anything, but who saw it said it's his best work.

I can draw really well, but haven't done that in a long time. Of course, an internet addict. After having my daughter I don't really do much other than watch cartoons and and other little kid stuff. The closest I've ever been to camping is going to Hampden Beach in an RV last year. It wasn't planned and I just got roped into it. I want to go canoeing or kayaking bad. They have "kayak around tomales bay, and hike to point Reyes" things here. I'll probably go sometime or another, I like to hike, too. Come to think of it, we showered probably a lot more than "truly hearty" chicks would have... probably every other day. Also, our tent was totally macked out and cush, compared to everyone else's. The boys we hooked up with there were like "I wanna stay in your tent!" :)

yeah, you really gotta like camping more than being clean shaven, I guess, to truly enjoy the experience. At least for a few days. I, personally, have never been able to grow much of a beard, so it's not as big a problem. However, I do get very antsy when my hair gets greasy. I do not stay in less than a four star hotel if I can help it - Do I strike anyone as the camping type

Interestingly, I did it when I was a boyscout - I hated it then. I like being in the woods and all. I just do not like sleeping in a tent.

When I went down the Amazon in the late 90's, we slept on a boat that would be no stretch qualify as luxury. We had a shower with river water and a toilet, but that is about it. I enjoted it, but wnet straight to the hotel pool and then bathroom once we got back to Iquitos.

It was a TON of fun. We delivered school supplies to the Yagua Indians on, mainly, the Nappo River, which is a tributary to the Amazon River.

My mother, who is not once to mince words, looked at me when I told her I was doing this for like two weeks and said in a Southern accent "You DO realize there are no five star hotels on the Amazon and just exactly what the hell are you going to do, buy the Ralph Lauren safari collection, stand on the bow of the boat, and throw pencils to the children like you are in some Mardi Gras parade?"

Taking pictures, fiddling with computer stuff, reading, swimming, trying to find things to be involved in on campus, volunteering, hanging out at the beach.Tiff, you'd be crazy not to major in seismology or fluid mechanics while you're down there at SC, given the fact that two amazing research organizations are located right on your campus: the Southern California Earthquake Center & the USC Tsunami Research Center!!!!

You could be a world-famous scientist, like Professors Synolakis & Borrero, for God's sake!! I'd even come visit you & you could introduce me to all the seismologists & engineers & we could pore over their recent studies.

My newest hobby is looking for Indian Artifacts. I've found a few things but i'm just getting started. I also enjoy gardening and fishing.

I would love to get into photography. In High School, I was in yearbook and it was exciting to develop your own film. Our yearbook sucked bad that year though.

I used to look for Indian Artifacts as well when I was in grade and high school. We found some arrow heads and some tools. Nothing really huge - but it was a very fun thing to do.

You are so weird sometimes. How do you ever do anything? If people are pissing in the river, or lake, it's so few parts per million, or gets washed downstream. Millions of people have swam in water forever, and most are just fine. The ocean? That's too much water for me! Can you swim on the Cape?

When I was little, my grandmother's friend had a pool that she'd let us use, but she said that if you peed in it, your wang would get shocked. I believed it.

I don't really swim on the Cape, no one can really swim in the ocean, I just wade in the water or park out on the beach.

My dad has quite the arrowhead collection. Most of them he collected as a child, but it's really cool.

It was actually funded by the national broadcaster as one of a few projects to be aired. That meant we had some executive producer from a broadcast network breathing down our necks, and like always, he looked and behaved more like he was in the mafia (not good on my nerves). He had a habit of poking his nose in for five minutes to view weeks and weeks of work and just saying "no, do it again". Fortunately they really liked ours but we still had to edit it to be in the regular documentary slot, in other words we had to ease up on the piss-taking a fair amount. Anyway, we recently won a national film comp with it and received funding for a future film. That gave us a shoe in to be granted approximately $50 000 more but my filmmaking partner and I just had a falling out and so I have no idea what's happening.
*sigh* The hard, complex life of a filmaker. :distress: If only you worked in an office everyday, doing something so mundane you could never possibly care about it! Ah, the happy, happy, stress free life you would lead then! :woohoo: Every day would be a fantabulous party of nothingness for you! Sure, you'd still have to listen to a-holes, but without the stress of actually working on something creative that you love! I tells ya, you've chosen a hard road, Lux...

Just ****tin ya, L-muffin. I hope everything works out, and congrats again on your award. :xoxo:

Surely I could never be as much of a household name as Professors Synolakis and Borrero. I think you should go back to school and study seismology, David. You're the only person I know who reads tsunami reports and geological data for fun. How come you never went into research in that stuff yourself?

Of course! I'd love to say "My agent never gets ruffled!" :) And I think your natural lack of verbage will make others nervous, which will then enable you to take advantage of them. At least that's what happened to me. JK. But the fact that you were fairly silent for sure made me say more stupid ****, and there was a level of uncomfortableness there that I think would help you in that career. People would be like "She just stared at me, and so I kept raising my offer... "  :xoxo:

Well you're right, it's a very hard road. Successful filmmaker? Chances are not high and the reality is that filmmakers also work these jobs because they don't earn an income. Also filmmaking is a small percentage creativity. This is the main misconception about it. Producing a film is as creative and doing data entry. The film set for this last short film was only 2 days but I can assure you it took a lot more sitting about at a computer writing standard film documentation. And talk about stress. My god. We were co-producers, co-directors and co-writers which meant that no matter what end of the scale it was, from pleasing the executive producer to someone tripping over a cable, it's all our responsibility. It's all too frequent coming across people who think filmmaking is a breeze. It's an incredibly tedious and risky *profession* to choose. Plus I was a producer at university and so I basically did specified law.

I know you kid but it's kind of irritating when others assume that this line of *work* is a breeze and an opting out of the real working professions.
Ok, ok, sorry! I never thought it was a breeze, quite the opposite, but I still think it's a labor of love, which makes it better. Just making a little joke, folks.
I know it's extremely difficult. But if I could choose to do that, or something that I'm doing ( ) I'd still choose that in a second! I still think it's more creative than Data Entry, especially if you thought up the concept for the film. Don't worry, though, I already knew it was hard, and never thought it was opting out of a real profession. Quite the contrary, like you said, the chances of becoming a successful filmaker are slim, so I know it's a hard road.

Sounds like my kind of guy.

The closest I've ever been to camping is going to Hampden Beach in an RV last year. It wasn't planned and I just got roped into it. I had one change of clothes, no razor, a couple towels, and that was about it. After two days, I was out of my mind. Finally just got up and walked to Hell and back for a disposable razor, a t-shirt, and deodorant.

There's a great campground down in Truro, very close to P Town. It has showers and they are VERY clean, I was impressed by the cleanliness of those and the other "facilities". Also, it is on the beach so you just walk down a path and you are there. It is woodsy, but not too much so because it's just the little scrub pines. Plus, not a lot of mosquitos since it is on the ocean. I went there a few years ago and had such a wonderful time.

Omigod, I LOVE your mother!

Omigod, I LOVE your mother!

Child - she was like Auntie Mame. When asked once by a yankee sales clerk in Sak's ON Fifth Ave. - how old she was - she relied in an indignant yet Southern genteel manner "Somewherah between menopause and death!"

She is great. I must write a book one day.

My other fav. was when she has a new knee put in a year ago and the lay Catholic lady minister came around to administer the Eucharist - my heavily demeroled up mother matter of factly expressed something to the effect of "You PAPISTS do not allow any other Christians to have the Body of Christ - now get out!"

Then, when she had her left breast removed after opining "it has served its purpose and I have ALWAYS worn gay deceivers" - she would let no man in the room until her nurse had applied her make up and fixed her hair. Interestingly, she had the make up lined up to the portable dining tray in her room complete with post its on each application that said such things as "not too much rouge"

There are many many more!!!!

I need to write that book

I'm with you, I'd die. I need a shower and a shave. I feel like the biggest scrub if I can't shave every day.

My friend's husband absolutely refuses to go with us to our annual cabin camping trip (for the last 11 years) due to the public shower issue. It doesn't bother me one bit - there's stalls & everything, it's not like you're out in the open for all to see.

Of course, the insects in the bathrooms are not my favorite thing about camping...

Hobbies?!?! I have a kid!!!!

OK, well when she's not dominating my world I, too, write, mostly short stories, but I have about 100 pages of a young adult novel as well.

I've also needed to accept recently that apparently cooking is a bit of a hobby (as un-"modern woman" as it sounds :] ). I've started with Japanese cuisine because I was bored with what I normally do. So far the miso soup has turned out very well!

I suppose I could consider theatre a hobby, though I have a real love-hate relationship with it. I acted for years, and even worked as a freelance theatre electrician for a few years right after college (when actors and acting were beneath me  ). I went back to acting when I realized I was a much better actor than a tech! Not doing anything with it right now, but it still feels like a major part of my life.

That's plenty...along with the 4-year-old...

As a single mother, my hobbies include cooking, cleaning, laundry, taking the child to and from school, doing some mundane tasks at work for 8 hours, making sure homework is done, making sure beds are made, feeding the dog, making sure teeth are properly brushed, worry obsessively about her going to public school next year, and going grocery shopping once a week. Oh ya... I pay the bills, take out the trash, fix overflowing toilets because someone used too much TP, and watch cartoon network constantly.

Sometimes, I go to the bar.

I forgot a hobby -

I go from one sh*tty job - were I work my @ss off and am totally taken for granted and paid pathetic wages - to another. I just started the most recent one yesterday and I don't know that I'm going to last a week. The manager is already pissing me off and I don't need this. I can stay at home and get treated like sh*t and not have to wear a uniform or be anywhere at a particular time.

Strand--you're killing me. Now we know where you get your refined sense of humor from!

And I'm with you--100%. To me camping out means having to stay in anything less than a four-star hotel.

My hobbies include reading--both books & magazines--fiction and non-fiction. I really like biographies, history, and anything to do with "Old Hollywood"--or new Hollywood for that matter.

I have a fairly large DVD colletion and of course collect Stevie & FM stuff, including boots.

I also have a vintage purse collection. Specifically, I collect only Whiting and Davis & Mandalian mesh purses. I also have way too many designer purses from the modern era. It's a compulsion with me. In fact, shopping in general is a passion of mine.

And of course, the ole' internet is a passion. How did I ever live before I had a laptop PC and a wireless network set-up in my house?

Unfortunately it's non-redeemable so it has to go to a project in our name. I want him to pay me my share and just take it but we're not even really speaking so that will have to be the first step before we discuss this. In terms of the added funding, the director must have a screen credit and sometimes the producer aswell, plus it's basically assumed that the person pitching is the director. It would be so much simpler if I were to direct but seeing as I'm in ****ty position right now and have other priorities, it's just causing all sorts of problems and my partner is an editor. We can get a producer but it'll be harder convincing them to take on another director and a project where my only contribution is writer. Basically what it comes down to is almost being forced to make a film because if we waste the funding we have there's no way we'll ever get it again. Being forced to direct a funded film, it is an odd problem, but one all the same. Dammit, why couldn't we have just won cash? Sorry, just venting.

Hope you'll find a way to make this funded film. Anyway, for your next projects (i'm sure there will be  ) if you'd ever be looking for some indipendent producers who leave creative freedom, there are a couple of Italian ones who love to produce in all the world, are always looking for new talents, and usually do a pretty good job.

:D Jason, I adore her. She sounds just like my great-grandmother on my mom's side, born and raised in Alabama...until she was sixteen, then came the first of her (at least) six marriages to usually wealthy men.

One night at dinner my aunt's boyfriend said to her, "So, Granny, just how old are you?" Her response: "To you, MICHAEL, ah am Missus Hendrickson!"

When staying at her cabin up at Clearlake, said aunt's friend did not want to abide by my great-grandmother's curfew 10:00, saying that it "wasn't the law, 11 is." Hannah Leroy's response: "In this house, to you, ah AM the law!"

No one ever knew just how old Hannah Leroy (my great-grandmother) was. Upon inquiry? "Well, even I can't tell you that. The court house with my birth certificate burned down." Gee, think she was the one holding the match?

...though y'all probably know about my hobbies

The biggest one right now is getting through this semester. I often think it isn't humanly possible to read all the books I have to have read by the end. :distress:

But, besides that, there's

*my student job, supplemental instruction for a freshman English class
*reading for pleasure (novels, historical stuff, gay stuff)
*writing poetry (though I don't do it as much as I used to)
*collecting stethoscopes/auscultation (y'all know about that)
*collecting FM stuff and listening to music a lot
*playing around online and on The Ledge (I really haven't gotten to do much of that lately)
*writing in my blogs
*talking on my cell phone too much

After that it gets even more boring so I should end it there.
