Ok, I made sure that I was well prepared and had about 13 rolls of film and extra batteries. I took 2 256MB SD cards and 1 extra 64MB SD card for my digital point and shoot Pentax Optio S4. I took my Canon Sure Shot 85 point and shoot 35mm and my new Canon Rebel K2 35mm SLR. I saw in a photography book that adding a red rose would be a nice prop for a photo shoot so I decided to stop and get one. Well, finding a really photogenic red rose a few days after Valentine’s Day was next to impossible. My local Stop and Shop did not have the best quality of roses so I decided to go to a florist. I stopped at one on the way to my friend’s house and still could not find a nice red rose. The only suitable rose was a pink one so I bought that one.
So my friend Kim and I then head over to our friend Donna’s house. Donna is the friend who is getting married. We get there and keep in mind that she lives right by the ocean with beach access just a flight of stairs down from the property. Kim was doing the videotaping so she went down to the beach area to get a few opening shots. I stayed inside the house and waited for Donna to finish getting ready.
There is a beautiful view from her backyard and she has these sliding glass doors that overlook everything from her house. She had some decorations over the glass door area so I decide to take some photos over there. I had her pose with the rose. It was a beautiful bright sunny day. A took a few shots of Donna with each of my cameras in front of the glass. That is where my big obstacle of the day took place. The subject came out looking too dark and the outside view was crystal clear.
I was able to fix this by just keeping the flash on. I did not however, remember to do this all of the time.
It was a very frosty 29 outside. We decided to try and go out and take a few quick photos. It really did not seem too cold outside. I thought that it was actually very nice. I was able to get some nice photos of Donna against the fence with the crystal blue ocean in the background. The view was just fabulous.
The wedding ceremony and reception took place all right there at Donna’s house. I took a few a photos before the ceremony of things like the cake and some little bride and groom bears that she had in the house. Then some guest started to arrive and I was able to snap a few shots of the guests with gifts in tow.
I wanted to take pictures of the ceremony with the flash off and I was having a real struggle getting the right exposure in front of that glass door. My friend who was doing the videotaping was also having the same problem.
I was hoping that they were going to have the ceremony outside because it really was not that cold. All of the guests had arrived and they were now just waiting for the pastor to arrive. When he walked in the first words that he said to Donna were “You are not getting married outside, it’s too cold”. I have to say that I was not too happy about that. I don’t think that Donna and John were either. It really was gorgeous outside and the ceremony was not very long. It could have been done but the pastor was about 125 years old. They were married right in front of the glass door.
I was able to stand off to the side and not in anyone’s way for the ceremony photos. The ceremony was normal except for the fact that the pastor kept calling Donna ‘Debbie” instead. He had to be corrected a few times and it was actually pretty funny. We all had running jokes about it all day. I used my SLR for most of the photos at that point. It was the only one of my cameras that was fast enough to be able to capture everything at the right moment. I also had it set to the AUTO mode. That was not the best choice that I could have made. I really should have put it on Program mode and kept the flash on BUT I did not want to have a distracting flash going off while they were exchanging vows. As a result I have silhouette pictures of Donna and John holding hands, kissing, etc. I was able to capture the right moment but not the right exposure. The photos actually look cool in an odd sort of way. I tried to edit them in Photoshop using ‘Fill Flash” but that just intensified the grain. I used Kodak Portra 400 speed film.
Then the guests came up to congratulate the couple. I used my digital without the flash to capture the interaction. The digital was a bit too slow but I did get a few good shots. I went around taking some shots of the guests chatting, etc.
A buffet was served after so I put my cameras down for a while so that I could eat. I went outside after and took some more photos of the newly married couple. After maybe a half hour the bride and groom cut the cake and I was able to get some good shots with my digital. The party did not last too long. Kim and I stayed to capture a few more pictures and video. We all went down to the beach after and John threw some food out so that the seagulls would fly over the ocean. It looked like a scene from the movie ‘The Birds”. I got a few pics and I got a few good ones on my digital. The couple then went back inside where we watched them open the gifts and I captured it on camera. Kim and I stayed a bit longer and I just finished the few frames of film that I had left. We then wished the happy couple best wishes and a good night.
In the end I took 9 rolls of film and went though 2 256MB SD cards and one 64MB. I was only able to get 3 rolls developed so far. They came out good for the most part except the ones near the glass door.
I also had a strange problem with a red streak on the last 2 or 3 pictures from the photos with my SLR. I have no idea what caused that. I was only able to get 2 rolls developed so far and it is on both rolls.
The only camera that was able to capture that beautiful blue ocean was actually my digital. The ocean looked faded with the film.
I’ll post a few photos later.
