I was in the parking lot of a local beach area Saturday night around 10PM when I saw this thing. It had the face of a cat but looked bigger I went into my friend's SUV and I tried to take it's photo and it looked right into my camera, My camera (this is my new Canon Rebel K2 35mm) was on AUTO and I could not get the shutter button to move. I was not happy. I put it all on Manual and I finally got to snap a photo but by then the cat was moving away. Does anyone have any idea what this is or is it just a very large house cat?

Here is the actual photo that I took. The line is thanks to CVS crappy photo lab.

And here is the same one that I crop and enlarged, however it came out very grainy. :(

Judging by the markings I'd say it is just a house cat. But its hard to tell with that picture and I don't know what sort of animals are native to Rhode Island. Could be something wild, but doesn't look like it from what little I can tell. I know that doesn't help much. :sorry:

a housecat to me, I own a rather large housecat ("Ace") who is larger than some Wildcats that reside in this area (The wildcats in the area have ears like lynx's and are 'Bobtails'...aka 'Bobcats', Beautiful animals.)

One thing I love about living in a small rural community is that we see all types of animals from bats to rattlesnakes to Bison/Buffalo to my favorite the Timberwolf

I can do without all those animals. Yes, I am a baby and I don't like wild animals. But they do sound beautiful.

Yeah looks like a big housecat. We get some pretty sizeable ones around here too.

Incidently ( and speaking of wild animals) here's a Great Blue Heron I rescued this year...

Don't feel bad because the picture quality is bad thanks to my lack of photography skills and CVS's awful photo lab.
I can't seem to find anything about what animals that are native to RI myself.
All that I know is when I saw it I got out of there really fast because it was kind of big. It was most likely just a large cat thanks to all of the rats in that area. There are a few eateries in that area that attract them.

I think that my next attempt at wild animal photography will be at the zoo the first Saturday of March.

Yeah... He was horribly injured and trapped in my back yard compost heap. I called a local wildlife shelter and they told me how to catch him so I could bring him to them. That was right before we left when I realized this would be my last chance to get a photo!

You? Are the bomb. :xoxo:
And, Pattie, I know everyone is saying that just looks like a big housecat, but it looks stranger than that to me. Did you get a sense of it's size? Cause it looks really big to me. Also it looks like it has a strange face/body shape.

someone finds a snake and tries to kill it...It grates my nerves cause I love snakes

Several years back, Late one evening I was sleeping peacefully (Worked the daytime shift) and Deb made it home from work and she must have been getting ready to take a shower when I heard her scream basically 'blue murder' because in our towel cabinet curled up in a nice size ball was a beautiful 1.5 foot long snake!

So being the dry sense of humor person that I am I just reached in the cabinet picked this snake up in my hands, Opened the front door and released it into the grass outside then proceeded to go back to sleep without saying one thing to Deb the whole time.

Moral to the story-I hate being woke up when I am asleep, Unless it is a MAJOR emergency do not disturb the a-hole in his bed

Hey thanks Amber and Pattie! I'm lucky since the shelter is only about 1/2 hour away...and besides...what else was I going to do...let a freakin' BLUE HERON die in my yard??? His wing was really mangled and even when I went to capture him he was so weak he didn't put up much of a fight. Very sad.

And this ain't the country or anything (I live in an immediate suburb of Philadelphia), but my husband has made a habit out of photographing all the local wildlife that finds its way into our yard. We have photos of opossums, racoons, skunks, and even a wild turkey! We live on a street that dead ends at a creek, and there's deer down there. My husband always finds baby snakes and frogs in the yard too!

Maybe I'll post some more local wildlife photos if I feel like re-sizing them...

Yes, Amber it was larger and as a matter of fact I ran like the Dickens when I saw it. Even my friend who was with me thought that it did not look like a normal cat. That photo does not do it justice. I wish that I got that photo of it looking right into my lens. Darn automatic camera. Now I know why they have manual settings I just don't know how to work it yet.

Were they able to rehabilitate the heron? Just curious. I think lots of kinds of herons are endangered, or something, due to loss of wetlands/habitat. But, hey, what isn't endangered nowadays? I would enjoy seeing more photos.

Maybe a Main Coon mated with a bobcat? It looks really weird, though, like some kind of bear/raccoon/cat. Obviously, I know that's not possible, but I'm just saying...something strange seems to be going on! Oooo, mysteries of nature, I love it! :p

I never called to find out about the heron. I didn't have the heart since they told me when I dropped it off that things didn't look good for it. Not only was his wing mangled but twisted around its break like three times :distress: . On the ride, too, I'm giving him a pep talk the whole way because he was SO listless, I thought he was going to die right there. "Don't die in my car, Mr. Heron, we don't have far to go now..." I am glad I did it though!

poor thing... :distress: At least you knew it, once. :)
We used to live in a shack by a pond, and there was a heron that was always there (it was a really small pond, too!) and my mom always made a big deal that it was there. Now I know why. That was pretty cool.

Hey, pretty cool! I don't think i've ever seen one, live. We get lots of possums and 'coons. The best animal thing I ever saw was when I was walking down my parents road near dusk, and I suddenly got this prickly scared feeling. (There was a mountain lion attack before on my parents road)
so, then, I look up the hill from the road, and there was this weird coyote/wolf/mottled looking thing.(it didn't look like a dog, coyote, or wolf  more like some weird mix) then, I look down the hill in the woods, and there was a deer. So of course, I'm thinking "why is the coyote ahead of the deer?" And then my hypothesis was that they had both smelled a mountain lion a 'comin, and were running for it!

The funny thing is that we started with a pile of bird seed and we started to notice that after dark it attracted all sorts of other things often multiple things and multiple species. It's all cool to us, we don't mind sharing the space with them. They were here first...

Indeed! Although I shudder in anticipation of the day one of my cats decides to get in a fight with a 'coon! Man, one was on my porch once, ( I have had many such experiences with 'coons) and I live upstairs, no less, and i was shouting at it and making all kinds of noise, and, well, they just don't give a crap! Nah! I think most cats know better. We have 4, and they're pretty stupid, but not stupid enough to pick a fight with a wild animal.

The skunks are completly intrepid as well. I was standing on my back steps and out of the brush comes a skunk, just waddling along. I don't even think he knew I was there! But I said something (I figured best to let him know I was there...I mean...who wants to startle a skunk?) and he looked up but just went back to his thing. I suppose he's got the big guns, so he fears no one!

Cool pictures, Sugar!

That's one of the things I miss most about where I grew up (totally backwoods part of NY). We used to get tons of deer in the summer, because of the apple trees in our backyard. It was normal to see all kinds of stuff... foxes, coyotes, even a black bear once. We had a long dirt road as our driveway and I remember one time I was walking to the bus stop to get to school, and came to a group of like 30 turkeys in the road. They actually started following me, not chasing or anything, but like every time I would cross to one side of the road and then back, they would too. Creeped me out so much . The only "wildlife" we really get out here are the crows that eat the cat food we put out for strays.

I saw one last year while visiting some friends with my boyfriend. It wasn't even dusk yet, he was out early. Sean was like, "I wanna pat him." My friends were like, "Noooo." But I knew he was just kidding. :D He loves animals though and would have pet it if it didn't have that heinous keep away device. A friend of mine got sprayed in a tuxedo. He is in a band and it was after a wedding gig or something. He had to take his clothes off in the barn and leave them there for weeks.

Only thing is that I'm thinking about starting a vegetable garden this year. The groundhogs are gonna be a problem!

That would be cool. I've seen deer in my neighbor's yard, and I saw a fox in this area once, but that's it other than the scavengers I've already posted!

There was a little road I would take to my old work that had a bunch of turkeys on it. Once or twice I was even late to work because it was "Turkey Crossing Time" when I got there. And there is no way to encourage a turkey to hurry!

I saw a blue heron last summer while having dinner down in Siesta Key :sigh:. It was standing on the railing around the deck which was where our table was. It was so cool and I did get some pics which are somewhere. I'm so terrible at organizing them. But I will try to find it. It was sooo neat because this spot was right on the intercoastal and the sun was setting. Awesome moment.

OMG Pattie! Is this what you saw? I just saw this animal on The Today Show and thought of your post. A lynx looks very similar to a house cat but it has a very short tail, like only 4 inches long. The wildlife guy said they can be found in New England, although I'm not sure what it would be doing in Rhode Island because I'm sure he meant up north further.

This is it's size.
"Average Weight: 6 - 13 kg (14 - 30 lbs)
Length: 75 - 124 cm (30 - 50") Short "Bobbed" Tail (7-12")"
Okay, I was looking for information on their territory, and I found this website that had different kind of cat hybrids.... It has nothing to do with this, but it was kind of strange... http://members.aol.com/jshartwell/hybrid-bigcats2.html
oh, here's one about domestic/wildcat hybrids..

If you scroll down, they have a lynx/bengal hybrid.

I'm thinking maybe someone has it as a pet. It's illegal to do so in RI but that wouldn't necessarily stop someone. It is also still possible it was a main coon or other large domestic cat. But something about it's silhouette makes me think it was a lynx. Also, it has been so cold, maybe it wandered down from the north. I was in Plymouth a few weeks ago and saw these arctic ducks I have never seen before and also a seal. I don't know. It's neat to think it was a lynx though!

It's a liger.

You know I can't even remember it now. I just wish that I could have gotten a better photo of it. Thanks for posting the info.

I know that the seals are showing up on the shores of RI. A friend of mine got a nice photo of one last week.

I am going to try my hand at photographing some animals at the zoo Saturday morning. If I get anything that is OK I will post some.
