So I went to the animal shelter on a whim today (I had today off) - and I found the sweetest girl.

She's older so no one wanted her and she was about to be um "transfered"
So - I adopted her :D

She's an Irish Setter Mix and is as sweet as can be - very quiet and loving but does have a drooling and gas issue

Here are some pictures of my new buddy...

Congrats!

I'm not a dog person but she's cute (dog's seem to think I look really tasty and are forever trying to eat me). I am always very much glad to hear it when people go to the shelters and adopt older pets rather than going for the cuteness factor of a puppy or kitten. She has quite a bit of gray around the muzzle and that usually means no hope for a shelter pet. Which is a shame, because older animals still have a lot of love to give, if only people would give them a chance.

Thanks guys- I'm totally excited and she's a sweetheart - very happy and excited - so we went out to play - she was a little apprehensive about the snow - then she tried to run, slipped and slid on her face a few feet - didn't seem to phase her - and now we're chilling inside lol....

I didn't name her Clancy - her previous owner did - and that woman had her for four years - and then moved but couldn't take Clancy - so poor thing was just dropped at the shelter...she's really loving though and does the cute thumper thing with her leg when I pet her in the right spot :p

 I knew I wouldn't have the patience for a new puppy - so this girl is perfect :D

And I just thought I'd dress her as Sulamith and take her with me to NOTS ;)

Nah - I already have a friend who LOVES dogs and will be the perfect sitter :)

Sorry, but I need another pet like you need another sibling.

But since you're advertising let me say:

Anyone want a three year old, grossly overweight, schizophrenic, pain in the ass cat with a crooked tail who can't seem to spend more than an hour outside without coming home with lacerations, abscesses, and all kinds of lovely bank breaking medical problems? Did I mention he's currently on antibiotics for fight wounds from a few days ago?

He's fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. Anybody? No? Gee, can't imagine why not.

On a side note: Estrange4Life, it is oddly amusing that someone such as yourself, with your sig of a guy headbanging, would be on a Fleetwood Mac board.
But then again, metalheads confuse me sometimes. I had a friend in High School who was one and absolutely hated FM because they were "too pop." Yet on the other hand, he was a huge Phil Collins fan. WTF?

OMG, she's so sweet looking, Deanna. And YOU are a saint. I have never, ever been able to understand how people can have a pet, and then one day decide they don't want it anymore. Moving across the country? I'd DRIVE my dog 3000 miles before I'd leave her behind (or put her on an airplane, which would terrify her). I just can't conceive of it. Kudos to you for saving her from, um, transformation. Poor little thing. So glad she found someone to love her.

She looks like a sweetie. A tip on the gas thing-try a higher-grade dog food. They cost more but my dogs always did much better on them than they did the cheaper stuff. Some dogs also don't tolerate canned dog food well--some do, some don't. I usually fed mine canned in the morning and dry at night. That seemed to work for them.

Thanks - this guy at a book store I stopped at last night recomended a dog food - he feeds it to his dog and apparently has spent hours scrutinizing over ingredients at the pet food store - so I'll try that food...though now the name escapes me

She's now a bit nervous - won't eat - but I bought her a chew bone thing that she thoroughly enjoyed - :D

Looks awesome? Maybe. He is cute, I'll give him that. But you wouldn't think he was awesome if you had to live with the little psycho (allergic or not).

He runs around the house meowing at the top of his lungs for no apparent reason.

If you try to approach him when he's inside, he'll run away every time-though sometimes only for a few feet and then stop to let you pet him- othertimes he dashes underneath the nearest piece of furniture. When he's outside? You can't even get within 30 feet of him. Oh well, I guess I should just be glad that he no longer hisses at anyone who even looks at him.

If he wants attention and you don't want to give it to him (for example, when you're trying to sleep) the little bastard will BITE you.

Still think he looks awesome?

Although I will say that even though he's a nutcase and a pain, I love him anyway and would never give him up. But then again, two of my four rats cannot even be safely touched because they're so ill tempered and I love them anyway as well. Ah... motherly love is the blindest of them all. :)

Oddly - I do still think he's awesome lol....I don't know I have a thing for weird quirky cats....don't know what it is...

I house sat for some folks in San Jose a few summers ago - and they had this glutonous obese cat named Wumpus - lol - such a weirdo cat - but he was so fun and amusing - granted I had to live on allergy meds all summer but it was fun....I ended up having to put the cat on a diet - he couldn't get through the pet door or anything lol...

Though your cats inability to be outside without coming back with injuries is a bit worrisome...

Can you stand another suggestion? It may help to introduce the new food slowly (both for her taste buds and for her tummy). Mix in a little bit at a time, a little more of the new food and less of the old each time. Poor thing must be feeling very disoriented. She lost the person she loved most in the world, got locked in a cage at the pound, was probably scared and confused, and then brought to a strange house with new smells and a new person. Can understand why the poor love is nervous - give her some time. Give her lots of love. Even going out and coming back after short spurts will help her see that you aren't going to abandon her. Then, when you go for longer, she'll know you're coming back. Try saying the same thing to her everytime you leave. That will become a signal that you are leaving - but that you will be back. Sounds silly, but in their little worlds, that is big.

Have I mentioned I think you're a great person for saving her! :wavey:

Let's see he's come home on at least four seperate occasions with abscesses.
He came home with a huge laceration on his rump that nearly reached his anus. (Apparently another animal tried to rip him a new a$$hole and almost succeeded.)
I've had to pull other cats' claws out of his skin more than once.
Oh yeah, and he came home one night lethargic, hissing at everyone, covered in mud and his claws were all broken and frayed. Never did figure out what happened. Neither myself nor the vet could find any wounds, xrays showed nothing out of the ordinary... hit by car and got lucky? Who knows.

But I know what you're probably thinking... Why don't you just keep him inside all the time? I never let him outside or my other cat Dunlop (named for the tire company because he'd been hit by a car before we adopted him) for that matter. My family on the other hand cannot be convinced to do the same.

No no - please- I welcom all suggestions. My family has always had dogs - but I realized this is the first time that I am a dog's primary care giver :)

I am trying the slow integration of new food - the people at the shelter recommended that - I know she needs some adjustment time - I'm actually impressed by how comfortable she already seems at my place -wasn't outwardly nervous or squemish - still I know she must be very confused and may have abandonment issues - I went to the store last night leaving her for a short period- she was fine and so happy when I got back....I'm so excited to have her in my life now - she's such a sweetie :)

Wow - that's odd - I house sat for some other cats (for someone who's allergic I've watched a lot of cats in my day) and they used to come home with odd stains on their fur, cuts etc...BUT these people lived out in the desert - I was always thankful that the cats came back at all and weren't eaten by coyotes

But yeah - then they killed a bunny and brought me the head as a little present - freaked me out...but yeah these people refused to keep their cats indoors all the time...

What drives me nuts is that although we don't live in the desert, we do live right by a creek - which is home to raccoons, possums, and all sorts of lovely ill-tempered wildlife. Not to mention is a magnet for stray dogs and punk-ass kids.

Absolutely - anytime. I would be glad to help if I can. I got my dog when she was 9 weeks old - so I can relate when you say you knew you didn't have time for a puppy! But she's now four years old - and pretty much the greatest dog in the world (though I could be a bit biased here). yeah - if I had a job that allowed me more time at home I would totally get a puppy - but I think that right now, where I am in my life, Clancy is perfect for me - hopefully she'll feel the same way :p

Already she makes me laugh - it was snowing this morning and she went out to do her business and came back to the door COVERED in snow...lol..it was the cutest thing - she wouldn't shake it off  She definitely loves the snow

Hmm, perhaps they need a consequence for what will happen if they let the cat out? Can you put your foot down?

I used to have an outdoor cat when I lived in the burbs, she was such a sweetie and stayed out of trouble but I always worried about her. One time she did not come home for a couple of days and I was beside myself. She had already been an outdoor cat when we got her so we let her continue that lifestyle. She was an awesome cat and nothing happened to her thank god. I asked the vet about indoor versus outdoor and he said "If you had seen what I've seen, you'd keep your cat indoors." My ex has to keep her in now where he lives and said she adjusted quite well. And of course here in Boston Mufasa stays indoors.

Unfortunately when I say "family" I'm referring to parents and it's a bit hard to put my foot down with them.

I also forgot to mention that I had a cat swallow a fishhook and line (a lot of people fish for crawdads in that creek and often use cut up hot dogs as bait, I can only assume he was trying to eat the hot dog). He ended up going through an exploratory surgery and over a week's worth of hospitalization and fluid therapy to the tune of over $1,000 (this was about ten years ago, so I don't even want to imagine what that would cost now). I was still in high school at the time, so that enormous bill was footed by my parents, and still they allow the cats to go outside.
I have at least managed to convince them to keep the cats confined at night, which brings down the danger factor some, but not enough.

Ahh, I see. Your parents are insane. That poor kitty that swallowed the fish hook, awww :( My cat was a chicken so she kept to herself while prowling around. She did bring home a mole once in a while, good kitty! And when we had a bat in our apartment she swatted it out of the air for us. The guys were trying to catch it to no avail but Izzy "quick paw" C got it right out of the air!

Kinda funny, but most of the metal heads I know say Stevie "Rocks" whereas Phil Collins just "Blows goats"  As for Fleetwood Mac being too "pop" I think someone needs to have a check on that lump located 2 feet above their ass, Cause Phil Collins is more "pop" (Or in his case "puke") than FM ever were.

"Bang it til it bleeds..."

ps-Hell, A few Ledgies have seen me headbangin' during "Come" at the Oklahoma City show in 2003...Ol' habits die hard

Hhhhmmm... interesting. Actually the metalhead friend I am referring to is the one that I stole my "Elmer Fudd comparison" (on another thread, don't remember which) from. Of course at the time I was rather offended by it, since I was (GASP) a Stevie fan back then.
Stevie, the perfect woman? Ok. whatever. We'll agree to disagree on that one. :)
We'll have to agree to disagree on the subject of Phil Collins as well. He is much more pop than FM (which is why I was so confused by my friend) but I like his music quite a bit.

Headbanging to come? That's something I certainly have never seen anyone do. But then again, I read somewhere (don't ask me where, it's been years since I read it) that Jerry Cantrell of AIC has listed LB as an influence, so what the heck?
I certainly didn't get the urge to headbang during that song, but the friend who went with me still insists that I had an orgasm during it. :]

And let me just add that coming home to someone who is SOOO happy to see you is awesome lol...

I got home from work and Clancy was beside herself excited....then I got her leash and she literally started jumping up and down - it was the cutest thing ever...

Unfortunately she seems to have gotten sick to her stomach today - nerves I guess  She hasn't eaten much even though I kept the same food she ate at the pound...it's Science Diet  Anyway - I'm loving this - she's so friendly and cudly :D

Not to talk about this forever, but, she physically is beautiful (looooove her fur, and her cute floppy ears) and you can tell by looking that she has amazingly "calm, sweet, loving" dog eyes! I know I'm an animal dork, but that dog is a PRIZE!!!! That dog is a gift from wherever! That dog is a blessing from all of time, just for Deanna!
I seriously, literally, want to meet her.  :p
Ok, I will stop now. :wavey: :sorry:

Congratulations, Deanna--she's gorgeous! And major kudos to you for adopting an older dog. When I was rescuing dogs in Phoenix and we'd go to the pound to get some, it was so sad to see all the older dogs just get walked past and ignored. Fortunately we were able to rescue some older ones, but they are hard to place, as most people either want a puppy or a young dog. For me, if I ever adopt another dog (but since I have 3 that is highly unlikely for the near future), I would definitely go with an adult dog.

You may have some issues with her for a bit. Rescued adult dogs typically don't show their true personalities in their new homes for about 3 weeks to a month. It takes that long to get "comfortable". She may not have anything crop up, but better to be forewarned that it's possible.

Again, congrats!!!! I'm so happy for you!

PS. Outdoor cats suck (sorry Amber)...

  I know....I had to physically move her to one side - she does seem to have selective hearing and wouldn't answer to her name - she was happy in the spot on the bed she chose lol....and when I tried to get her to move she looked at me like..."yeah..that's gonna happen...go away you're bugging me...."

Once I got her to one side though all was well....

our bed is overran with cats at night, Anywhere from 1 to about 6 cats each night...And "Ace" takes over the pillows as his throne, So odds are very very good that ya are bound to rollover on a cat.

The cats rule the joint, we are just here to feed 'em, change the litter boxes & be their personal entertainment

Sounds like our house. My father is the cats' personal doorman and waiter, my mother is the milk dispenser (I've told her a thousand times not to give them milk, but she insists on sharing what's left over from her cereal), and I am the walking cat treat dispenser. I am also the walking treat dispenser for the rats and hermit crabs as well.
The bettas and toad couldn't care less that I even exist. Oh well. They're lame pets anyway and sometimes the feeling is mutual.

THAT? Is huge. She obviously trusts you tremendously already. I'm just loving this story - I'm so glad she's going to be loved so much after what she went through. It sounds like the perfect match.

And I can totally relate to your love of her ears. I could kiss my dog's sweet floppy ears all day! Not to mention her fuzzy little face. :) They just melt your heart, eh?

She is a beauty. I love Irish Setters. We had one about 15 yrs ago., named Manti. They need a lot of room to run around and play. haha Have fun and enjoy her being part of your family.

Speaking of pets in the bed, there has been a time or two when *I* have slept on the couch, because my dogs had overrrun the bed and wouldn't budge!

Last night I had a bit of a "breakthrough" myself with my new cat. She's been pretty skittish around the dogs. At one point last night one of my dogs woke me up because he was pushing me off the bed. I moved him over and repositioned my leg, when I felt something under the covers. And there was Katie Scarlett under the covers, between two dogs, sleeping away. I was thrilled, but a little annoyed as well. This means another one to take up precious space on the bed!

Um, same with Mufy. This morning he was on the ironing board when I was done so I didn't want to put it away just yet lest I disturb his playing. Then later he of course knocked it over and nearly wasted himself. I continually execute bad judgement when it comes to that cat, he is so spoiled. But I just love him so much! :xoxo:

Mufasa likes to spread his love around, sometimes he sleeps in my bed and sometimes in my roommate's. He used to ALWAYS sleep in my roommate's bed until I threatened to stop feeding him. Just kidding, one day he suddenly decided to share himself. This week I have been the chosen one so he's been right next to my face when I wake up, what a lovely sight. :D

I rescued him from a situation where his human mom had been hospitalized and someone was feeding him but he was living in an apartment alone for a month or 2. :( A neighbor took him out and began looking for a home for him. My ex went to see this neighbor to buy a fishtank and she asked him if he knew anyone who wanted a cat. He knew I wanted one since I had to give him Raven back when he came back from Okinawa which was very painful. He told me this cat let him pick him up and fell asleep in his arms. I pretty much made my mind up then that I would take him.

When I got him he was about 6 mos old and the very first night I had him he jumped up into my bed to sleep with me. I just thought that was so trusting and sweet, like he already knew that I would take good care of him. Oh I'm misty again looking back on that moment. He is an awesome cat.

Deanna, I am so happy for you that you have your Clancy. I love animals so much, I think about you two all the time, hehe.

I go by Dog Party USA every night on my way home from work. All the dogs in the neighborhood are in the little park with their owners and I have serious dog envy! I really would love one (two) but cannot have one in my apartment. :( But I will get one someday!
