So I've been watching the trainwreck that is another MTV-produced display of rich kids with far too much money, My Super Sweet Sixteen.

These kids go all out (on the parents' dime, of course) to have a crazy birthday/debutante/etc party, closing down stores to buy a single dress, renting Hard Rock Cafe, etc. Some of them are decent (there's, like, one girl who actually seemed grateful for what her parents did for her), but the majority of them are spoiled rich kids. Like Ava. Oh, Ava. Ungrateful selfish b!tch if there ever was one. She didn't deserve a party at all. When she was crying at dinner with her parents and her parents ignored her? Awesome.

I'm always thinking, "Holy crap! My 16th birthday was dinner with the 'rents and a cellphone." Which lead me to wonder: What was everyone else's 16th birthday like?
That show sounds like it would make me barf, in the same way that "Simple Life" does. My sweet sixteen? Well, I think I got my license really close to it, so that was good. I think just the whole fam came from stockton, and we had a meal of my choice (my mom's yummy fried in oil tacos) and my favorite cake (german chocolate) and I probably got a lot of money, and some good presents, and spent time with the fam. Although, I remember my cousins were, respectively, 1 year, and 2 months old, so that put a "baby crying" element in...it was good, but I never had a birthday party with my friends until I moved out, so.... My whole family always made a big hairy deal about my birthdays since I was the only child in the fam for 16 years, so that was really great. We did have 3 (old) cars at the time, though, so I suppose driving was the best part.

MTV makes me sick to my stomach, but what a new low. Truly classless and those parents are the ones who should spanked.

My birthday was dull. My grandmother died a few days before it.

I go to school with a lot of those people. One of my roomies last year? Her & her twin brother each got shiny new lamborghinis for their 16th birthday, and a party complete with ice scultpures. I don't even remember what I did for my 16th, so that should tell you how memorable it was . I like doing stuff for other peoples' birthdays, but for me it's just another day. I have literally forgotten mine before.

I didn't have a Sweet 16 party or anything. My aunt took me to Glamour Shots though.

I made my Confirmation 4 days before mt 16th birthday. On that Saturday my parents threw me a surprise Confirmation/Sweet 16 party at my Grandmother's house. It was nothing that exciting just catered food and old relatives that's it.

I just had my sweet sixteen in June :)

My mom totally surprised me... My friend Juli, Melissa and I were going to this big outdoor mall and after we had to pick up her sister. It was at a hotel and she had to do some dance thing...I didn't even think it sounded weird or anything. There was even a room number and everything we had to go to to "get her sister" so we went to the room and knocked on the door and my mom mom, aunt, grandma and a few other friends all screamed SURPRISE!! It was great...I wasn't expecting it at all. The only thing I could have changed would have been my mom leaving that night. She got this hotel room and it had like two stories, but she insisted on sleeping downstairs and we got upstairs..I wanted her to go home so we could have stayed up all night and been really loud. But nevertheless, it was still a lot of fun. :D
Here's a random picture while I was opening presents...It isn't a good one but you'll know which one is me becuase I have my one of many FM shirts on!

I went out with my friend Greta. We got into a fender bender picking up her books from her college (she was going to be a freshman that year). Da da. Oh, I think my mom went out to dinner with my nana and her brother and my aunt. I came home and was on my own. Fun times.

Oh, Honey. Oh. :( Well, to say something good, probably most sixteen year olds would rather be out with their friend then stuck with their fam.
I hope you guys laughed and were silly during the whole "fender bender" time....that's what i would've done... :o :xoxo:

Well, we were out for like, 3 hours. Her stepfather is super strict so had she come home in her car with her bumper totally smashed, she would have been screamed at. She went and picked up her grandmother and we went hunting for a bumper at a junkyard. Woot. Sixteen. I think my family and I ended up going to Dave and Busters a few days later. Whatever. I got a car when I graduated high school. That made up for the suck of my sixteenth birthday.

All I really remember about my sixteenth birthday was being in a knee brace. I was in a cheerleading accident two days before homecoming and I was waiting on an orthopedist appointment to find out if I'd have to have surgery or not. I think I got some jewelry that year, but that's all I honestly remember. I was about to say I got my keyboard that year but I got it the year after that, so...

Whoa - I totally don't remember what I did for my sixteenth birthday

I'm going to just pull a birthday memory out and perhaps it's my sixteenth - it may be my seventeenth...I really have no recollection lol...

So on what was possibly my 16th - I woke up sicker than I'd ever been but my mom kept pushing me to get up and get dressed etc because she really wanted to take me to this pizza place....lol - this is the last thing I wanted to do - I just wanted to die - but no - I was getting annoyed because she INSISTED I get off my sick ass and go...

We get there and she'd organized a little surprise party for me with all of my best friends and some family members lol - the pictures are hideous - I'm all pale and sickly looking - but it was fun from what I remember

I remember asking my mom to take me out on a drive so that I could learn. My parents always drove manual transmissions, so that's what I had to learn on. My folks had just bought a brand new car, and when my dad found out mom was teaching me to drive on it, he was furious. They got into a big fight, and dad took off walking. About 20 minutes later, I was on the phone in the house, and my mom yelled for me to get outside, that someone was there to see me. So I got off the phone to see who it was, and there was a blue Mustang in the driveway. I had no idea who it was. Then, my dad got out of the car. ( I was so confused... ) Then, mom said happy birthday, and it finally clicked... they bought me a car! The fight between them was totally staged, and the car had been sitting two streets over at a friend of my mom's for a month. So, this was in 1994, and they bought my a 1984 Mustang (it was ugly!) but it was mine, and in damn fine shape if I do say so. Anyhow, they took me out to dinner afterwords. And NO! I wasen't a spoiled rich kid... they damn near broke themselves to get that for me. I will always be greatful for that little car. Oh, the memories.....

Is it some trend in America to be given a car on your 16th? I think I got a balloon.

I don't know if it's a trend - I know a lot of my friends indeed got cars of licenses on or around their 16th. I got a license - I sure as hell didn't get a car - and even with my license my mom wouldn't let me drive her car

Okay, here is my sad tale, my birthday is in April and on my 16th it snowed, my boyfriend wouldn't come over to see me and didn't get me a present and I didn't even have a cake. It was awful. :( If I ever have a child I will do better.

DeadliestPoison, I do not know how you can even watch that show. I can't even watch the commercials for it without screaming at the TV. Those stupid b*tches have no clue.

Kind of. I'm sure most "rich" kids get brand new cars for their 16th. Middle class - not as much. A few kids at my high school did, but more for graduation than their 16th.

My parents got me a car around my 16th in 1991- of course, it was a 1977 Monte Carlo. We called it "The Disco Cruiser." What a hoop-dee. :D I didn't care, it ran pretty good & I drove everyone around in that big-ass boat for years.

Oh. And that evil f*cking "Sweet 16" show? I HATE it, possibly more than I've ever hated a TV show. It makes me sick. Good idea, MTV - let's put more spoiled ignorant youth on your network to make the rest of this country's kids think that that's what's normal.

My 16th? I was probably out in the woods drinking with my friends

But they were trying to teach me responsibility which I respected and was grateful for the cheap price.

orange and yellow make me throw up a little in my mouth... But not quite vomit. both don't look good on me, is why. Well, a light yellow is probably ok, but - and when taken in combination, say, in someone's decor, orange and yellow together immediately conjures up bad memories from the seventies, and the horror my mind experienced then whenever I was forced to see Orange and Yellow together.
I'm all about Black, Maroon, and Black.

I have an orange velour track suit and when I have it on my roommate says I look like a traffic cone. :D It is a lounger and I would never consider wearing it out. But I love it.

The colors I wear are red, pink, and black mostly. I love purple too and "need" more purple clothes. As far as green, I tried that neon green on and it does nothing for me but I got the seafoam green and it is a really nice color which I get complimented on quite a bit. I like wearing colors, especially in winter because everything around me is gray so I want to be vibrant!

Well, let me tell you... I had no business driving at that age. I was a dumbass driver, and don't see how I got out of my teens alive. My little one will get a car from me when she graduates high school and not a minute before. And even that depends on how she does in school. Anyhow, I understand why your parents did what they did, as far as selling you their car goes. It is a responsibility thing. I'm sure they did what they thought was right.

What dress are you speaking of? Is it casual or dressy? I have the shopping bug BAD right now and am constantly talking myself out of buying things these days. I really want a white gold/pink sapphire ring. Or a white gold/tanzanite. But I can't afford it! Oh well :)
It's actually in victorias secret catalogue right now. It's a 'bra top' dress, that cuts out just above the boob, and then has a narrow neck collar that is green and white beadwork. You know, like a strapless, except for a narrow part leading to a neck collar? And then it is mid-low calf length, and clingy but not the whole way down. Fit and flare? I guess it's kinda casual, maybe barely like...oh, wait, here it is - I guess it's not seafoam, I thought it was lighter - It's an olive. Either way, I think it will still look good.

I despise driving and put off getting my license until I truly couldn't live without it. Didn't get my permit until I was, what, 18 or 19? Sometimes when I'm driving, I have to pull over just to regroup and relax.
Well, I'm 17 and still have neither a car nor a license.
Wow, I thought it was just me. I'll be 20 this year and still don't have a license. It's getting to the point where I really need a car, though. I won't get on the bus or metro here after dark, and cabs are hella expensive. But L.A. traffic scaaares me. I've seen so many freeway accidents and bikers/pedestrians get hit (someone was killed in a hit & run last week at the end of my street) simply because people don't want to stop. Plus, trying to find parking in this city will hike your blood pressure up at least 10 points.

It doesn't help that you guys have six lane freeways out there, either.

But, no, it isn't just you, though. I am scared of driving. For some reason, the smaller the car I'm in, the safer I feel. Probably because it seems like you can control it more, whereas if you're driving those land yachts they call Buicks, the ass of the car follows three blocks behind you. And I just LOATHED having to go down and take my driver's test. One of the ****tiest things you'll ever have to do in your life. And I forced them to take a better picture of me until I was satisfied with it, there was no way they were going to use the picture on my permit. No bloody way. I looked I was starving for crank.

Anyways, about the thread, yeah. I can't believe so many people hate driving, I want a car so much. But, on the bright side, I get much more excercise than i would if I had a car. Course, then, I'd probably just drive to the gym, i suppose...

cause I have no choice too, Live roughly 89 miles from downtown OKC...So driving is a necessary evil if I want to shop, work, etc.

Btw, I've been driving since I was about 12...Havent had a ticket since 1989 nor do I plan to get one any time soon (Though I did once get pulled over by an OHP because he thought the car did not have a tag sticker, Which it did...Under all the dirt/dust...So my warning from the Oklahoma state trooper states "Driving too dirty a car" )

ps-Texans CANNOT drive worth the f**k...I laugh at how often they get busted doing 90MPH in a 75 MPH zone  What a bunch of Longhorned-asshats & tools

That's how I am too. My driving instructor had one of those big ass Cadillacs from the '80s. It was like the frickin' Titanic. I am dying to get a mini-cooper, but I'll probably end up with my mother's Civic which is, thankfully, on the smaller end of the spectrum too.

My 16th was on a sunday- the only thing i wanted that day was my license- i had gotten my learner's permit on my 15th birthday and counted the days until i could drive without an adult in the car. But, being sunday- i didn't get my license until the day after my birthday... so when my friends and i went out to party that night i still had to be driven around- at least i got to drink though! when i got home my parents gave me the keys to my new car- my dad's old car (he had just gotten a new one) It was a 1990 red mustang convertable (this was in 1996) which was really cool... but it was a ford and it already had over 100,000 miles on it... so it needed much maintenance... but it was cool

i went to a private high school where MANY of the kids are like those on the sweet 16 show... one of my best friends got her pick of the BMW lot... chose a brand new bmw with only 12 miles on it! most of the kids got their choice of cars.... my best friend my jr. year was told he could have ANY car he wanted.. and he chose a 1971 volkswagen bus with a 1969 bug engine for $2,000 !!! that thing broke down ALLLL the time! it was fun though. most of my classmates could have anything they wanted... but they weren't into it. no Ava's at my school!!

I didn't get my permit until I was 17 and had to wait until I was 18 to drive because they put a new law in place in the state of NJ a few years back. I had friends drive me around everywhere. There were a few of us that waited. Of course, the reason we waited could be attributed to my friend Lauren's mother (she was the Phys Ed. teacher) and her habit of jumping onto desks yelling, "YOU COULD KILL PEOPLE WITH YOUR CAR!)@*!@)!" during class.
