I love epic songs. Songs that seem like they go on forever and it's good, because you never want them to stop. Ones that build up that anticipation, bring you to that point and back down again. I would have to say some of my favorites are:
The Rain Song (Zeppelin)
Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd)
LA Woman (Doors)

How funny - I've been thinking about Meatloaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" for the past few days... That thing goes on *forever*.

Layla by Derek and the Dominoes
First you get that rockin' guitar driven sound, then it progresses into the piano solo at the end. Sigh. Gotta love it.

I forgot about that one! I shouldn't have....I just put it on my epic songs CD  That is why the epic songs topic was in my head this afternoon. Great song. Love it from beginning to end!

Hmmm...well, meatloaf songs, like somebody already said. I always think of Wheel in the Sky, and More Than a Feeling (don't shoot me) as epic songs, but i'm not really sure if they are. They definitely have that cheesy good epic sound, to me. I think Magic Man has some epic qualities, as well.

I was just listening to Magic Man (a live version) and was thinking the same thing. I should have put that one on my CD, too.

November Rain! I totally forgot about that one! I have to remember this stuff when I go to download songs. It seems like I get to a computer with DSL and forget everything!

Devil went down, really? I guess so, it tells a story and all. Definitely on American Pie. that's like a super epic.

Ah, yes, Bonnie/Jim is usually epic. I, personally, think Faster Than the Speed of Night is much more epic than Total Eclipse, but...uh...you have so much bonnie that i don't have. I think i'll PM you right now. :D

Oops! I forgot "Faster Than The Speed Of Night"! :o
And I definitely think "Total Eclipse" is epic... seven minutes long, a delicate piano & vocal intro, verses that build up steam as they go, an instrumental interlude that takes the song into its crescendo, and then finally a quiet, reflective ending that brings everything full circle. :)

yes, you are right about Total, but i did not realize it was so long. I guess time flies when you're having fun and belting your ass off. And you are right about it's musical qualities.
How could you forget Faster? God, I love that song sooo much. The fast piano, the big drums, the screaming vocal, the quiet parts, which in the end lead up to that high, high yowling with a fountain of aggressive drums behind it, and that piano, always fast, always underscoring...uh...oops, sorry, I dorked out about one of my favorite songs...hehehe...*insert sheepishness* :o
But Total Eclipse is one of me and my friend's songs - we never know the same songs, she is AFA and knows way other songs than i know. But on this one, we duet beautifully. And she usually makes up an awesome 80's dramatic dance to go with it  *sigh* Good Times... :D

American Pie, by Don McLean ?
Long Long time ago
I could still remember how the music
used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
that I could make those people dance
and maybe they'd be happy for awhile......
But February made me shiver
with every paper I'd deliver
bad news on the doorstep
I couldnt take one more step
I cant remember if I cried
when I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
the day the Music Died....
So bye bye Miss American Pie
drove my Chevy to the Levy but the Levy was dry
and good old boys
were drinking whisky and rye
singing "This'll be the day that I die"
"This'll be the day that I die......."
there's more of course, because its EPIC!
(I STILL know the whole thing by heart)
I also want to suggest that Bruce Springsteen's early stuff had epic songs in there, and KISS's Rock and Roll all night and Party Every day could go on forever...also, believe it or not, Gordon Lightfoot did some epic songs, the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald comes to mind...

Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues
Breath deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless images spent
Empassioned lovers, wrestlers one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion...

And since I can't stand to leave Lindsey Buckingham out of any conversation that he can be in anyway related to, let me add:
D.W. Suite from Law and Order
Frozen Love from Buckingham Nicks
I'm So Afraid from The Dance

I love the 11 minutes and 3 seconds version of "Time Has Come Today" by The Chamber Brothers. It is just so cool and trippy! Great, 60s, psychedelic song. The shorten version just isn't even close to the original in greatness.

Definitely Jim Steinman songs from Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell and it's follow up many years later. Bonnie Tyler's Faster Than the Speed Of Night, the title track and the big hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, Streets of Fire soundtrack with Nowhere Fast and Tonight is what it means to be young, Talyor Dayne's Original Sin from the Shadow soundtrack.
I would also say that Queen has some epic songs as does Floyd and Zep. I love songs that are so broad and massive in sounds and story book lyrics.

Achilles Last Stand--Led Zep
I LOVE this song. I've watched it on the Led Zeppelin DVD so many times, it's ridiculous. Easily my favorite (long) Zeppelin song. No Quarter is a very close contender, however.
Lux, it appears you and I share a love for Pink Floyd. Shine On YCD is definitely one of my favorite Floyd tunes. I could listen to it over and over. I like how they put both parts together on Echoes so that we have a version now where it's all one long piece. I even like it on Roger's live CD from 2000. (Awesome concert by the way, so happy I was able to see him.) Other epic (or maybe just crazy long) Pink Floyd songs I love...A Saucerful of Secrets (the end with the wailing always gets me, especially the live version on Ummagumma), Dogs (although I used to run on the treadmill to this song, so I had to hold off for a while because I was starting to hate it!), and the whole Atom Heart Mother Suite (I LOVE the part where it says "silence in the studio" and then flares up again...greatness!).
Going to listen to some of these now. Thanks for reminding me. :)
Brad
One of my other favourite Floyd songs is Fearless.
I like Meddle for One of these Days and Echoes, but I guess that's about it. Never really got into Fearless. But, I'll give it another try in a sec since you mentioned it! In my current state, maybe it'll appeal to me more!

or what about Allman Brothers..."Come on into my kitchen....cuz it's goin be rainin' outside....." always puts me in a good mood....and Gregg Allman's Queen of Herats? The horns on that tune and his voice....magic, passionate and blues....
