Who among you has heard this album? I just bought it last night and I am in love with it! Apparently Jack White produced it and even sings a duet with Loretta, which is the second track on the album and it is AWESOME!! This album downright rocks! It kind of reminds me of the last couple of Johnny Cash albums where he covered NIN, Soundgarden, etc. and played with rock musicians adding "a new twist on old songs." I am so impressed with this album, and a bit bewildered that Loretta agreed to such a rockin' forum with which to present her songs (all of which she penned), but then again, it kind of makes sense. You'll see after you hear it. Her voice sounds wonderful too, and there's a few acoustic songs on the album that showcase it nicely. Anyway, I highly recommend a listen.

I've had the album for a long while now
It is, indeed, a great album - I love it - and it's the first on which she's penned every song - so she has said she's proud of that.
I've loved Loretta (though not as much as Dolly) almost all of my life - and this is one of my favorite albums definitely

Yes, this disc rocks. I only got it about a month ago, after hearing dissention rave about it in various threads for the past year or so. I like the songs themselves, and in fact have been singing them constantly ever since. But the production is what really pushes everything into a new realm for me. The CD has a very spooky vibe running through it, which diss said may be because Loretty's house is supposedly haunted, and some of the music was recorded there.
Other fave tracks:
"Mrs. Leroy Brown" - I now want a huge pink limo...
"Portland, Oregon" - and a sloe gin fizz... great duet!
"High on a Mountain Top" - can't get this one outta my head.
"This Old House" - if it could talk, would say 'Welcome Home!!!'
"Miss Being Mrs." - sooooo heartfelt... and I didn't realize Doolittle had died. :(
"Story of My Life" - 'What I wanna know is what happened to the cash?'

Those are my two absolute favorites on the album
I also really like the title track :D
--As a result of Portland Oregon I also like Sloe Gin Fizz...I'd never had one - and then after hearing that song I was curious...so I tried one..they're good!!!

Ah, yes, the miracle elixir that is gin... ;)
Except I can't drink it any more. Shortly after I turned 21, I got blasted on gin-and-tonics, to the point that I was actually experiencing visual and auditory hallucinations. (Oh, yes.) To this day, if I even smell gin, I get goosebumps and break out into a cold sweat. Never had a SGF tho - perhaps I should re-visit the drink. Can't be any more noxious than tequila...

Same here, but it was straight Southern Comfort.
Never again!
I haven't heard the entire yet, but I adore the songs I've heard (Portland, Oregon & Miss Being Missus.) I really need to buy it.

I love it, it's probably my favourite 2004 album. The songs Loretta wrote are awesome and she sung them with all her soul; Jack White did an incredible job producing it, he was able to make palpable all the love and respect he has for her. There 's an incredible harmony between them, the kind of harmony I wish for Stevie and her next producer. I love all the album, but to choose some tracks I'd say Portland, Oregon (beautiful video too, Sophie Mueller is a real talent), Miss Being Mrs, Have Mercy, Mrs. Leroy Brown  and Women's prison, the ending with Amazing Grace and the guitar solo are so beautiful.
Great, great album.

Van Lear Rose is one of my favorite albums of all-time, it's divine. She has never sounded so fresh and vibrant as she does on it. Her voice is the most beautiful it has ever been, she hasn't lost a thing. I think Jack White did a phenomenal job producing it and it seems to have lit Loretta up like a firefly. It's just too good. She sings it like she's pouring out her soul.
My favorite tracks are the title track, Story of My Life, This Old House, and High On A Mountain Top.

It is the best album of 2004 in my eyes. It is just terrific---beginning to end. I think the real kicker for the album was Jack White. He gave it the edge that made it even better. I have had it since the week it came out in April, and I'm still not tired of listening to it. My favorite tracks: "Van Lear Rose," "Portland, Oregon," "Have Mercy On Me," "Miss Being Mrs.," and "Story of My Life."

I actually have the same problem for the same reason when it comes to gin. Except the incident was actually on my 21st birthday...it tastes like rubbing alcohol to me, and I do not have picky, delicate taste buds... gin - *shudder*

Gin (like tequilla) is an acquired taste and not for the faint of heart. Sounds like you were just burned out on it. That sucks.

 Although...I loved it from the first moment I had it - in a gin and tonic made with Bombay Sapphire...while listening to Bombay Sapphires
Gin and Tonic is my favorite drink ever as well....soooooo good!
I also don't mind tequilla so much...the only alcohol I really have an aversion to is Vodka - yuck...baaaad memories...

I love it too. Funny thing is, the first time I heard Portland, Oregon I thought Loretta was singing with another woman! I laughed for ten minutes when I found out she was singing with Jack White.

"Portland, Oregon" was never given a chance on CMT, Even though the song & video were alright...
I tried giving this album a listen and it sounded good, Not my taste in music though (Which has changed as of late...Back to listenin' to heavy rock/metal (Not the US crap known as metal) and the like.)
More power to Loretta
Btw, if I am goin' to drink alcohol gimme "Black Tooth Grin"

"Black Tooth Grin" is a combination formerly known as "C & C"...aka Crown Royal & Coca-Cola
But it is also a Megadeth lyric from "Sweating Bullets"

(Not meaning to sound rude here :o ) It is and has been getting recognized on CMT. It was #1 on the CMT's Top Twenty Countdown two weeks ago, and it was #5 this week.
It has been on their countdown for weeks now. I think it is getting a lot of attention.

I am NOT a country fan (save Loretta and Dolly Parton), but I have to give homegirl props because it's one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

excluding their excuse for a countdown ya rarely see the video in regular rotation..I have grown to absolutely HATE (!!!) CMT which has become yet another one of Viacom's lameass "music television networks", with hardly any emphasis on music (CMA is much preferred), Too many TV shows that have as much to do with country music as Assleak Simpletarded has to do with singing live and staying in tune/key while doing so

Are you f'ing kidding me?!?!?! April!?!?! Jeezus where've I been? That was almost a year ago.
Yes, it's an amazing album. I've been listening to it non-stop.
I wonder what Loretta's old-school country fans thing about all the rock on the album. I definitely think she was interested in tapping into a younger audience.
