...does anyone know who this line is referring to from "How Still My Love?" Or does anyone have any theories? This is one of my favorite Stevie solo songs and I've been wondering about who this could be for the longest time.
Any thoughts?

Here is an interpretation of "How Still My Love." I found it on the Penguin. The person who wrote this interpretation feels that the song is about Lindsey. It was written in 1979. Therefore, it was around the time her and Mick were having an affair, and it seems to match with their relationship better. At least, that is what I think.
The title "How Still My Love" may have been inspired by The Five Satins, a 1950's doo-wop group, and their lovely song "In the Still of the Night".
The still of the night is the most romantic time of the night, but also the loneliest, depending on individual circumstances. In Stevie's scenario, it is a time of cross-currents, crackling with energy and electricity, as two voices call out to each other, sending messages back and forth in a desperate, urgent, means of communication. The song itself (which was written in 1979, and appears on Stevie's Bella Donna album) seems to have many connections to Stevie's other songs "Dreams" and "Outside the Rain". Like these songs, it seems to be a wistful, passionate reflection on her feelings for Lindsey.
"Still the same old story
What price glory"
Lindsey and Stevie broke up in 1977, but in the aftermath, their feelings were never really resolved. Stevie is acknowledging the fact that professional competitiveness played a big part in driving a rift between them. Both Stevie and Lindsey have spoken many times about the fact that, when they were together, they had great passion, but not always the best rapport. They were both deeply involved in music and they had a rivalry there. She felt that he had trouble dealing with her popularity. She, in turn, resented him spending so much time on his music, at times when she wanted him to pay more attention to her.
When Stevie talks about "what price glory" she is partly talking about Fleetwood Mac, and partly talking about her solo career, which was just beginning at that time. She knew that it would cost her in many ways. Fleetwood Mac would resent her, Lindsey would have trouble handling it, and Stevie's own personal happiness would have to be sacrificed.
"You make it easy
In the still of the night
In the still of the night...
How still my love
In the still of the night...
How still my..."
Sometimes at night when she's alone, she remembers Lindsey, and her memories are bittersweet. Tender feelings are mixed with heartache. In the still of the night, she thinks about him. The phrase 'still of the night' is used somewhat ironically, since even in the deepest, quietest part of the night, her feelings are tumultuous, not still.
How does he "make it easy"? She may be referring to him being difficult, which makes it easy for her to be apart from him. Or she might be talking about their past relationship as lovers, and saying that he made it easy for her to be with him at night, [when they were making love], as opposed to during the day, when they were always fighting. She still remembers the loving times between them. When she sings "...in the still of the night" it echoes the line "In the stillness of remembering" from her song "Dreams". Perhaps she is saying to Lindsey, 'Our love will always be there, and I'll know it, and you'll know it, and we can't escape that.' She may also mean that "he makes it easy" by his skillful musical arrangements. She has often spoken about how he put "magic" into her songs. There were many times during the recording of Rumours and Tusk when she and Lindsey were not getting along, but they still had to work together, and sometimes the musical part - singing together, or his arrangements on her songs - were the best part of their communication. That may have made her remember the love between them and to think about what still might be, if only things were different. In the still of the night, her thoughts turn to fancy. Even though they are not a couple anymore, she still loves him, and she feels him loving her too.
"Doing all you can for me
They say you're not the man for me
Don't make it easy
In the still of the night
In the still of the night...
How still my love
In the still of the night...
How still my love"
He arranges her music - this is something that he does for the good of the band, and maybe at this point in their lives it is the most that he can do for her. Considering all of the difficulties that they have been through - breaking up, and yet still having to work together - he is actually making an enormous effort by still being able to help her in this way. However, this does not stop her from feeling wistful.
Some of the people in Stevie's life say that Lindsey is wrong for her. However, she does not share their opinion. She does not want him to make it easy for her to hate him because she knows that she really will always love him. When things are calm, she feels more of that love.
"Standing...in the doorway
Watching out to sea
Calling out to me
You go...your way
Go on...go on"
She feels them both at a standstill right now, not really knowing if they will always have a rift between them. She watches him work in the studio and feels like an entire sea separates them. She contemplates the future, knowing that her solo career represents a new step toward a brave, independent Stevie, but also a lonely one. She feels Lindsey calling out to her. She knows he does not want her to go solo and leave Fleetwood Mac behind. She acknowledges their connection, and then she says "You go...your way", responding to his song "Go Your Own Way". It is also possible that she means Lindsey is calling out to her (he is saying to her "You go..your way...Go on..go on").
"But you don't forget me
Ooo no...you don't forget me
Oooo no...my lonely one
You're doing all you can for me
They say you're not the man for me
Don't I make it easy
In the still of the night
It's...me...talking to you"
She is speaking to him directly. She specifically says "Don't *I* make it easy", meaning that she will make it make it easy for him to remember their love. Again, this echoes "Dreams" ("..in the stillness of remembering...what you lost") and "Outside the Rain" (" ... Look in my eyes, touch my face, there's no one that can take my place.."), and her promise to him that their love will forever haunt him. She will let him go, but he will never forget her, and she will never forget him either.
"How still my love...
In the still of the night...
How still my love...
In the still of the night...
It's me that's talkin' to you
In the still of the night"
During the night, he is filled with loneliness. She is lonely too, and she feels his loneliness acutely, like an ache in her heart.
(The interpretations to these lyrics were compiled through discussions on the message boards of the Penguin, The Ledge. It is entirely possible that the artists had something completely different in mind.)

That's interesting. I guess I wasn't really aware how many songs Stevie has actually written about Lindsey in her lifetime. Much of her entire catalogue is devoted to that man!(Maybe)
It's kind of crazy if you think about it, but then again, they grew up together so he's been the most constant (not to mention intense!!) presence in her life besides her family so it makes total sense.
I think the "they say you're not the man for me" line sounds like it's written more with Mick in mind than Lindsey. Maybe the song is about both of them?

Like I stated in my above post (the part at the beginning I actually typed), due to the timing of the song (1979) and what the song is about, I agree that it is about Mick. :)

This is one of all time favorite Stevie songs. Back in 1981 I heard the tail end of an interview with Stevie and she said that she was in a very sexy, romantic mood when she wrote this song. I wish that I knew what interview it was from. She did not say who it was about, however. I think that it might be about a few different men maybe but the lyrics don't seem to fit.
I don't think that it is about Lindsey however these lyrics make me think twice:
You go your way
Go on...go on
I still think that it could be about Mick or even Paul Fishkin. It could also be about Don Henley or maybe some man that we don't even know was with Stevie.

I think it is partly about Iovine. "Doing all you can for me...they say your not the man for me." He's doing all he can for her solo career....but people think he is not good enough. Oy, I dunno.

Hubba hubba, :xoxo: I wonder what (or who) brought that on!
I too agree that the song is probably about a host of men. One of whom is most likely Lindsey, the "you go...your way" is totally a tip off.
It's probably about Mick too.
I thought about Jimmy Iovine but the date the song was written doesn't jibe. I wonder if it's about a mystery man. For some strange reason I get this feeling but I don't know why...I think it's the mysterious tone of the song. The line, "they say you're not the man for me" hit me as so strange, I mean who would've said that and why?

The only thing I ever heard Stevie say about meeting Jimmy was from a long-ago interview (forget which). She said she met Tom (after having been a fan for a few years) at a Heartbreakers show in 1979 (the "Damn the Torpedoes" tour), & Tom later came round to Fleetwood Mac's show at the Forum in December 79, bringing Jimmy with him, to see Stevie & discuss the possibility of Jimmy's producing a solo album for her.

Could you imagine that meeting:
Stevie: Is there anyone from FM in here - Jimmy check under the stall doors
Jimmy: Nope - all clear - why are you so secretive
Stevie - Well, I need to be - lest LB gets pissed and refuses to produce anything again if this solo thing never pans out

I didn't know that Tom Petty was the go between between Stevie and Jimmy. I always thought that Stevie approached Jimmy because she liked his work on Patti Smith's Easter album.

1. One of the trashy rock mags back around 1980 or 1981 printed a photo of Stevie & Mick & captioned it with something about their having been going out together. Of course at the time I thought it was just totally fabricated. Wish I could find that photo; it's the earliest mention I can remember of their affair.
2. Walter Egan revealing in a Q&A here several years ago that he had fallen for Stevie a long time ago, & that "Magnet & Steel" was written about her & him.
3. Reading somewhere many years ago that Fleetwood Mac's lighting guru Curry Grant dated Stevie after he & Christine split.
4. Attending my first Street Angel show at Arco Arena & hearing Stevie introduce "Destiny." She fell in love with some guy in 1973 back in Menlo & seriously considered staying with him.

Ahhh...don't think so. Stevie and Mick are almost the same age. He might be about 1-2 years older, about the same age gap as Stevie is to Lindsey. Chris is older than Mick, and Stevie and Chris aren't even 10 years apart.
Does the song literally have to be about people with a ten year age gap? Maybe she just picked the number ten because it makes an easy rhyme?

Actually, Mick was born on June 24, 1942, and Stevie was born on May 26, 1948. Therefore, there is about a six year age gap there. When Stevie was ten, Mick was 16. Mick met Jenny Boyd in 1965, therefore Mick was 23 at the time, and that makes Stevie, 17, at the time. Therefore, "the only 10" comment isn't about Mick and Jenny and Stevie.

I thought Mick met someone at 16...
Actually, Mick was born on June 24, 1942
This seems to be a point of long standing confusion. Mick says his birth date is June 24, 1947. But there seems to be a listing somewhere that puts it at 1942, so each year when his birthday rolls around and newspapers put notices in the paper, some say '47 and some say '42 depending upon which source they're working from. Similarly, there seems to be a listing somewhere of Lindsey's birthday as being 1947, rather than 1949, so again, each year when his birthday rolls around, the notice in the paper is as likely to put him at '47 as it is to put him at '49.

Are there many other people who really believe that the "fell in love when I was only ten" line is meant to be taken literally? As in this man fell in love with a woman when Stevie was ten years old? That is not the way I hear that line at all. Not even a little bit. I figured it was meant to be poetic, perhaps used to rhyme. A different, more poetic way of saying " he fell in love with me when I was very young".

I guess that could be the case. I just always thought it was a weird phrase. The fact that she would deliberately put "when I was only ten" meant to me that something profound happened to her or someone else when she was only ten years old. I don't know...with Stevie one never knows
And it seems that Mick's of indeterminate age so...

I've had this "discussion" many a time... and let's just say, it's gotten a little heated on more than one occasion. I've always thought Beautiful Child was about Mick, and that the line is literal. It's very possible that Mick's first experience falling in love was at 16. Didn't have to be Jenny Boyd. Coulda been the girl next door. But I did always think he was 6 years older than Stevie - I seem to remember a quote from Chris one time, where she said Mick was "way older" than everyone else. The poetry Stevie uses in this song just has a different feel to it than the poetry she uses in songs about Lindsey. And don't ask me to explain that!!

Ah HA!! OMG, I can't believe it - I just went and got Mick's book to try and find out his age, and literally opened up to this:
page 29:
"I met Jenny when I was still in the Cheynes... i'd see jenny coming home from school, a stunning 15-year-old in white stockings. I lost my heatr to her immediately, I had a massive crush on her... I knew then, at age 16, that this was the girl I was destined to marry."

As far as How Still My Love...though I suppose this could still be said about anyone whom you know maybe you shouldn't-sleep-with-for-whatever-reason but-you-give-in-anyway, the "don't/you make it easy in the still of the night" really brings up images of an affair which would therefore be Mick.

Holy Crap that is so interesting. You may be right on. I used to think this song was all about Mick, then for a few years I was skeptical. Here is one thing that really confuses me...when she ad libs live "I still love you, I do need you, I wish that you were mine"...is she thinking about, God forbid, MICK?!? Does she still wish Mick wre hers? Is he or was he, really that special to her?
Sorry to those who think those two are a cute pair..I cannot fathom the thought. (that crazy girl, what was her name..the one who supposedly "did" all the rock stars and then wrote a book about it or something...well her description of, um, Mick's tusk...ahem... really turns my stomach.)
I love talking about Beautiful Child..its one of my most favorite songs ever. I cried at the last two shows when she sang it......

I know it's hard to believe Kelly, but I'm afraid so. I mean, I think that he was that special to her at one time. I don't think that she still carries a torch though, or at least that's what I would venture to guess. I don't get her former Mick obsession either, but then again, I think a lot of her romantic relationships have been questionable...starting with Jimmy Iovine! Could you just imagine the song she'd sing about that guy? The word "unibrow" would have to be mentioned AT LEAST once.

Awesome! I think all signs point to the fact that B.C. was written about Mick. Thanks!

Woo-hoo!! I'm totally there! Yeah, I went to the Phoenix show. Can you believe I wasn't able to go to the Austin show? My home town and i wasn't able to go. Sucks to that. I was and still am blown away by his magnificent showmanship. The Reality DVD really takes me back to being there in the audience, awestruck and dumbfounded. Do you feel that way too when you watch it?

I'm lost. What are all the signs that point to Mick, again? An affair? That could be anyone. The number thing? I still maintain Stevie and Mick are almost the same age. That doesn't mean the song isn't about him. I'm just saying the age part doesn't mean anything. I'm not sure that song is about anyone we know of.

I got high speed internet a couple of weeks ago and it's divine. I must have added 50 new boots to my collection. GREAT Bowie stuff. After you get it, check out this torrent site that's just for Bowie:

I got one the other day from June, the last show of the tour, and he goes ape**** on a security guard during Man Who Sold the World.
"HOLD IT! Listen, man, there's only one show going on tonight and it's mine, go conduct yours somewhere else. Get outta here! Now pick it up at the second chorus. Just like the first one, only it comes later."

 It's one of the best concert videos I've seen! Makes me reminisce of the shows I went to, definitely. Life On Mars, my word. And that Gail Ann Dorsey, what a f*cking voice! She could give Aretha Franklin and Freddie Mercury a run for their money, seriously. She's powerful. His concerts are epic in length, he plows through 30 songs like it's nothing. I really love Heathen and Hallo Spaceboy from the DVD, too.
Register at Easy Tree and Savage Jaw when you get the chance, they have amazing stuff. DVDs, live boots, demos and rarities, the works.

Aren't bit torrents the greatest thing since sliced bread? Get 'em while they're hot! I recently read about a concerted effort to go after torrent sites. Who knows how long we can load our boot collections postage free?

They are simply marvelous. I've gotten so much good stuff recently that I didn't even know existed. Bonnie Raitt, Jefferson Airplane, Franz Ferdinand DVDs, Bowie, Iggy Pop, etc. I even download the show Medium and put it on DVD after it airs.

One of the first books I ever got on FM back in 1978 stated Mick's d.o.b. as June 24, 1947. This is what is stated also in The Penguin biography section. It has Jenny Boyd Fleetwood (birth name Helen Mary Boyd) as being born in 1947. Her sister Patti was born on March 17, 1945 and in George Harrison's book Darkhorse he says that Jenny is Patti's younger sister.
According to the biography, Mick moved to London in 1963 when he was 15 to live with his sister Sally. So, that means he would have had to have moved there anytime from Jan 1, 1963 to June 23, 1963. That same year Peter Bardens heard him drumming in the garage and invited Mick to join his group, The Cheynes which broke up in 1965.
And did anyone consider that maybe Mick had his publicist or someone change his birth year so that it correlated with Stevie's Beautiful Child lyric "You fell in love when I was only ten"? Mick thinking to himself "Let's see... Stevie turned ten in 1958. I say that I met and fell in love with Jenny Boyd when I was 16. 1958 minus 16 years equals 1942. Hey! That's it! 1942 will be my new year of birth!"

There are some incredible dvds popping up all the time. The Franz Ferdinand dvds are the sheeet!
I've gotten shows going back to the early 70s on dvd in great quality.
I snagged an old Linda Ronstadt show I saw on TV in 1976.
The image was better than a lot of older Mac video boots going around.
There's some amazing stuff out there. :blob1:

Even for Mick, I think that's a little bit of a stretch!
Here's another thought - maybe Stevie thought he was six years younger than she when she wrote BC because that's what he told her!! He is very likely six years older, but as he got older, started fudging the date so he didn't appear to be so much older than all his bandmates.
Really, I think that Stevie and Mick were that much to each other. It's hard for some of us to imagine, but who are we to judge? Do I think she still holds that torch for him? No. Do I think she has incredibly sweet memories of their time together, and wonders what might have happened had he not been married, and then dumped her for her best friend? Maybe.
As I always state - this is just my opinion which I don't purport to foist on anyone. But, I have always felt that Beautiful Child is about Mick, and finding that paragraph in the book last night just sealed it for me.

 F'ing awesome. It's my favorite on the DVD. Speaking of going ape****, I wonder what he did after being hit in the eye with a lollipop (or whatever the hell it was) in Norway! Can you imagine the expletives he let fly after that little incident?

I think that's going to extremes. And to what ends? Why would Mick care about correlating his life with one of Stevie's lyrics? With all due respect, I think he has better things to do. At least I think he does, who knows?
