View Full Version : Behind Blue Denim...theories, proof?!

The lyrics to Blue Denim...

Does anyone have any quotes from Stevie regarding who this song is about? I always thought it was an incredible statement about Lindsey, but the timing doesn't line up properly (relating to how long Stevie worked on the Street Angel album and the copyright date on the song). Up until I realized this, my take on it was that it was about seeing Lindsey again for the Inaugural Ball:

"Saw him the other day
Saw him again yesterday
**(Inaugural rehearsals?!)**
I wonder if I'll ever see him again
He reminded me of blue denim"

"I knew him another day
I knew him another way
In some ways he'd forgotten me
In many ways he got to me"
**(Reflection on past relationship and how it felt to see him again?!)**

"I turned away so he couldn't see
I turned away it could never be
I never thought he would walk away
But I lost him again yesterday"
**(She never thought he would walk away from FM but he did in '87, and she writes this after the Inaugural Ball is over:"I lost him again yesterday"?!)**

The end is an almost eerie projection when you look back on it:

"So I'm going away for a little while
To remember how to feel
And if I find the answer
I promise you
I'll come back and get you"
**(Stevie going into seclusion following the SA Tour and then coming full force back into the public eye with The Dance, reunited with Lindsey)**

I'm normally not into analyzing lyrics so intensly, but this kills me every time! Besides, who else does Stevie know with eyes the color of blue denim?! ;) Did anyone ask Stevie about this song on Ask Stevie (not that it will neccesarily help my case, but still...)? Again, any insight or quotes from Stevie would be appreciated.

I think a quote of Stevie's regarding this song was posted recently, I can't remember but if you do a search it'll probably come up. I think Stevie said this song was about a man who dates a homeless girl, and eventually the girl has to make him believe she'd dead because she's bad for him... something like that...I don't think it's about Lindsey.

I think that might have been Street Angel she was talking about. Not 100% positive, but I think I remember that.

Blue Denim I do think is about Lindsey. Maybe part of it is literal (clearly she lost him and she was always seeing him again). She could have tried to reconcile with him at another time that we don't know about, and he may have rejected her. You know how Stevie writes... She might have written some or all of the words eons ago in her journals, and then gone and pulled them out when she was trying to get together songs for Street Angel. But, yeah, I agree. It screams Lindsey. Not her most poetic little ditty about him, in my opinion, but the sentiment is clear.

Oh, and just looking at your title - I got NO proof!! Just my humble little opinion.

Considering BD is written in the first person, it doesn't seem likely to me that it is about a homeless girl. That sounds like Street Angel. IMHO Blue Denim just screams Lindsey. It is such a melancholy song and sounds like it is totally about seeing him at the Inauguration. This line gets me everytime:
"He runs from the sight"

You can hear the pain and despair in that one line, as if she is reflecting on the power she USED to have over him and now she fears he wants to run from her. (he is successful right now with OOTC..she is a mess, physically, emotionally, career wise)
I think the timeline fits perfectly for it to be about the Inauguration too. Plus, she was at the end of the barrel creatively. Lindsey has always been a source of inspiration for her for some reason. Not to mention she has written about his eyes before.

BTW..no proof..just my own speculation. It's one of the only songs I like on Street Angel.

I heard that Stevie was somewhere Lindsey was (back during SA period) and they saw each other, but it was like he didn't even know who she was...he pretty much looked right through her...and you can see that "story" in the lyrics, if it's true...

Agreed. I also think it was about Stevie seeing Lindsey again at the Inauguration.

When I hear Street Angel, I think Mick. It screams about the relationship they had in the late 70s. Mick is definately the "Charles Dickens character, with your top hat and scarf." IMO.

Maybe Stevie did have an encounter with LB prior to the Inuguration that we don't know about? I don't have the CD in front of me, but I think the song is Copyright 1991 or 92. (The Inauguration took place January '93.) Unless she could have copyrighted the song in a slightly different format (perhaps only the parts about him leaving FM were there at that time?) in '91 and added to it after the Inuguration...could she technically do that without "re-copyrighting" it? Again, maybe they did see each other wherever earlier on...maybe they saw each other briefly for the boxed set (though I don't get that impression), or maybe he came to a TimeSpace show (though that seems unlikely to me as well)?

When I hear Street Angel, I think Mick. It screams about the relationship they had in the late 70s. Mick is definately the "Charles Dickens character, with your top hat and scarf." IMO.

Just because I've known of Stevie talking about the "homeless girl story" behind this song since shortly after Street Angel came out, I never thought of this obvious interpretation! If it is in fact about their relationship, it's sure an interesting and creative way to tell the tale. I'll be listening to the song in a whole different way now...

It's hard to tell who she's talking about in her songs sometimes since she switches "person" so rapidly back and forth!

I thought that too. I think SA (the song) is about what she says it is about which in a nutshell is the street urchin loving the rich guy so much that she makes him think she is dead because she realizes their love is not enough to sustain a relationship between two vastly diff people. I also think that relates directly to FM, esp. at that time.

Personally, I love this song.

I think Street Angel is typical Stevie - about many different things!! She may have explained it away by saying it was about a homeless girl in the way she said the GDW was about groupies and Landslide about trying to make it in the music business. But deeper below, there are probably a few other layers - and Mick may be there, Stevie herself may be there, etc.

I think even if Blue Denim was copyrighted in '91 or '92, it could be about seeing Lindsey again. I remember, too, that incident mentioned above where she said she saw Lindsey and he basically looked right past her (to the white sand... Oh. Sorry. ;) ) Anyway, I think it's more than likely that Stevie and Lindsey may have encountered each other somewhere before the inauguration. They both live in and around LA, and they're both in the music biz. There are parties and events galore they could have been at...

See this is what irritates me. She writes songs and then releases them several years down the road and you can NEVER know exactly who they're about because by the time they're released she's with someone new! Like the stuff on Belladonna is either about Mick or Lindsey (most likely) but she was with Paul Fishkin or Jimmy Iovine (or some such nut) at the time of recording/release and you're like, huh? Now, who is this about?

You heard that? Wow...it's interesting how people interpret things so differently. I aways thought Blue Denim was an intriguing, different song for Stevie. Lyrically, that whole chrous is written in third person. As I hear it, and as it appears in the lyric sheet, the correct line is: "They run with the sight." She's referring to his "blue-gray eyes."

However, the theory about the subject matter/inspiration seems very viable. When in doubt of what a Stevie song is about -- defer to Lindsey! It's a safe bet.

"He runs from the sight"

You can hear the pain and despair in that one line, as if she is reflecting on the power she USED to have over him and now she fears he wants to run from her. (he is successful right now with OOTC..she is a mess, physically, emotionally, career wise)

Well, I don't know, but I still think was being just premonitional (is that a word?) when she wrote the last lines:

So I'm going away for a little while
To remember how to feel
And if I find the answer, I promise you
I'll come back and get you

Exactly what she did!

" they run with the sight" ..that's about his eyes and that makes total sense...

I totally thought this song was about Lindsey. If she wrote it around the time of the Inaugeration...I would be surprised.

I was thinking of his one night stand with the BTM tour. Seeing him that night must have been really crazy for her. That was in 91 right? That would make more sense.

The copyright date on "Blue Denim" is 4/27/92. And the date on the master reel is 9/19/92 (if I am correct). So yeah, it had to be written BEFORE the inaugeration in January 1993.

haven't posted in ages....but to add my 2 cents I always though the line "so I'm going away for a little while to remember how to feel" refers to her going to rehab....I don't know about the dates and timing, but I always think that one small part of the reason she got off the drugs was for Lindsey....even though they weren't close I think his "looking past her" probably devastated her, and was a catalyst of sorts......so that maybe the next time he saw her he would recognize her as the girl he used to know.....

I found this quote:

"Well, I wrote this... um, it's a song about this guy who came into my life, but left just as quick. And his eyes were that intense, that it just makes you, even if you didn't know him, you would go, like, 'wow.' And you could be, like, the toughest person, but those eyes would make you be whatever he wanted you to be."
~Stevie Nicks, Pittsburgh, PA 102.5 WDVE 7/94

Now,if it was written about Lindsey, first of all I don't think she'd have reason to hide that..she's been pretty open about all the songs that are about him.
Secondly, the fact that she says 'this guy who came into my life' suggests that she hadn't known him previously..also the 'even if you didn't know him' suggests the same.
I think it's pretty close minded to think that this song is about Lindsey. It of course COULD be,but I've seen lots of people with an intense 'blue/gray' eye color. It's really not as uncommon as people think.

Yes it could be about anyone with beautiful blue eyes, but I think mostly she uses the 'blue eyes' code to talk about Lindsey. If I had been in her shoes, in 1994 I wouldn't have said either it was about him, because she said they had barely talked in those years. It could have been a bit embarassing to admit that she had written a 'I'll come back and get you' song about him.

"it's a song about this guy who came into my life, but left just as quick."

Does Brett Michaels have blue eyes? I imagine he could be a possibility, as Stevie talked of him VERY fondly in the 'Timespace' liner notes, and he fits the bill, when it comes to a man who seems to have left her life as quickly as he came.
The timing would be right, too. Since "Love's A Hard Game To Play" was recorded in 1991, and "Blue Denim" was copyrighted in early 1992.

Thanks for posting that quote, Bryan.
An additionally interesting thing about it... for me, at least... is that it's taken from an interview with our local rock station (which has always been very Stevie friendly). :D

Egads, that quote only reinforces my belief that this song is about Linds. For the umpteenth time, I do not think that all her lyrics are about him but for whatever reason some of them are. In 1994 they were not speaking. He came back into her life briefly to make the appearance at the BTM show and the Inaug.......Stevie has been dishonest when asked about song lyrics many times. Blatantly dishonest. Stand Back?!? At that time in their relationship, I would think the last thing she would want to admit publically is she wrote a song like that about Lindsey.
Could be about someone else completely but the whole eye thing....she uses certain words, feelings, phrases over and over when writing about him.

There's an old film from the 50's called "Blue Denim". If you can find it, check it out. I know Stevie has written songs that were inspired by films before.

I disagree about her openess on which songs are about Lindsey. After all these years of giving different stories about the first important composition of her career, Landslide, that tells me in the past she did not want to admit how many songs he's inspired. Maybe not every song is about him, entirely, but I think he's somewhere in almost everything she's ever written. Her unwillingness to admit until recently that Landslide was about him is significant.

She's blowing smoke by impling in that interview Blue Denim is about a stranger. She doesn't come out and say she didn't know the person. She implies the person just came and went. He had blue eyes. He could have been anyone. Yet, the line that really gives it away, imo, is... "understanding me and understanding you, is not an easy thing to do." Does anyone think she'd be saying that about a stranger, or anyone else besides LB?

I agree that, if the song is about LB, the chances of her admitting it at the time are slim. True, Stevie is honest about the content of her songs in that she never flat out lies about their inspiration, but she can most definitely be vague...as she's allowed to be ;) . And as with Landslide, I'm sure sometimes time dissolves one's need to be guarded about a song's subject matter. This is just pure speculation, totally just a possibility, that's all, but I mentioned Don Henley because of the film "Blue Denim". It's an old black-and-white about two kids that have definite paths set for their lives and expectations from others, committments, etc., and they fall in love and the girl gets pregnant. It goes through all the craziness they each experience in their minds because of the situation. And what to do about it.

I'm just wondering if the song could be related.

Interesting. I'm not familiar with the film, so thanks. This pulls DH up to be a much stronger contender for me. Especially because Stevie likes old movies, and comparing someone's eyes to blue denim is a pretty random thing to come up with without a trigger point. If it is about him, apparently Stevie had a much more subtle way of telling their story than he did :o . Of course, we don't know either that Stevie was never pregnant by Lindsey (it's none of our business, obviously, but we just happen to have the DH pregnancy confirmed).....

Actually I agree with everything you are saying. In my above post I was saying she has been vague or purposely misleading about the meaning of her lyrics in the past so this BD quote could be smoke. She often changes the meaning of songs in interviews even when they are in part about Lindsey. I agree with you that he is often intertwined in much of her writing..although I know many people around here strongly disagree. Personally, I think she does not want to admit how often or how much she writes about him, hence the misleading or vague responses. There is no way I can see this song being about a stranger. Why would she come back and get a stranger or someone insignficant? She is talking about how this man is now seeing her differently and that hurts her..he obviously knows her from the past!

BTW..you mentioned Landslide above, Glitter. Why in your opinion did it take so long for Stevie to talk about the real inspiration for that song? It was always pretty obvious to me that "I've built my life around you" was referring to Lindsey but there were those who believed she was referring to her musical dreams or her Dad. The emotion that flowed from her during Landslide on the MTV Dance taping was way more powerful and much deeper than Silver Springs. (for me) It was very genuine and there was so much vulnerability and love in her eyes.... the way she turned her body towards him when she started to choke up.... the complete spontaneaty (spe?) of the embrace and the "thank you's" at the end. I think it is my most favorite part of the concert.

All discussions of forgotten chimps aside...

My opinion of Landslide has not changed in 30 years. I always thought that song was about her relationship with Lindsey. Prior to the dedication in Boston I often posted about it whenever I wanted to point out how Stevie is not honest with herself about her lyrics, not necessarily that she is purposely dishonest in interviews when asked about her songs. I've always thought Stevie never wanted to admit to herself what that song was about because it says a lot about how conflicted and perhaps uncommitted she was to that relationship long before rocknroll excess became the default explanation why it didn't work out between them. I think she was always conflicted within herself about that song and what it said about her motives in being in a realtionship with Lindsey. I think she sees the whole thing differently now. Maybe that's what you're seeing with your observations on The Dance? Perhaps she's not as conflicted about it anymore because she sees herself differently and their relationship differently?

Now, don't get me started on Edge of 17 or Stand Back. :] :] John Lennon? Puhleeez! Welfare lines? Nice try, dear.

Although I see what you are saying, I think what she says is not necessarily untrue or conflicting. For example, she said Landlside essentially was about her Dad in the sense that the changing she was thinking about was leaving the music business, where she had had maybe marginal success and taking her dad's offer. But, she chose to stay in the business. So, her father is in there somewhere and she correctly states Landslide is about her dad as well as LB who taught her to play it, was her music business then, etc. Interestingly, she never said it was just about her father though  Same thing for the welfare line in SB in that although the song itself is about a larger topic, that line could be about being forced to stand in some kind of line. Thus, I conclude in general her songs have a general theme that she often does not say and many supporting themes which she says. They all exist if you will in those songs

Edit: I reread that and thought it came across as I am right and everyone else is wrong. Though that may be the case    (levity) - I most certainly am not saying anyone is wrong or anything like that - I am just saying my view

BLUE-GRAY EYES. What more proof do you need?!!

Yes, there are other people in the world with blue-gray eyes. But how retarded would it be for her to use that for every blue-eyed guy she dated. Come on.

Of course she's not going to say it's about Lindsey in 1994. I mean, look at the pics from his BTM tour appearance, which probably inspired this. She is huge. I love Stevie, but I'm sure she thought she would look really pathetic if she told interviewers this song was about Lindsey. I'm sure they would interpret it as "He liked me when I was hot but I saw him the other day and I looked so fat that I wanted to run and hide so he couldn't see."

BLUE-GRAY EYES. Duh.

I was just going to..Wait..WHY bother trying to open shippers' minds to a broader opinion??

You don't come across that way to me. :D

I agree with you especially about the multi-dimensional aspect of the songs. I think most of Stevie's songs are like that. They have different levels and different meanings. There are several correct ways to interpret her songs. I go for the direct approach in what seems obvious to me. Other people see other things. All can be true without one thing cancelling out the other. That's why I believe I can say a lot of her songs have Lindsey in there somewhere, even when he is not the topic or the main event, without also being in the camp of people who think they are still hung up on each other.

No disrespect to shippers, but I don't believe their current realtionship is anything but professional. I'm not even sure it was ever as romantic as what a lot of people think. Even though I think both have a strong presence in each other's songwriting from the beginning to the present, it doesn't translate that I think it means they're still hung up on each other in a romantic way. To me, it's more like, you write about the things that bother you or upset you. I think it's hard to argue they didn't always push each others buttons. That's as far as I take it.

Oh wow..Stand Back is another one. A welfare line? A made up fight between two people? WTF? Honestly Stevie..you need to come up with something better than that. Writing lyrics like that on her wedding night says alot to me as well...it indicates where her state of mind was at the time.

As for the rest of it, I hope this doesn't turn into another shipper bashing thread. Just because people think Lindsey is intertwined in alot of Stevie's lyrics does not mean they are completely unreasonable and unable to look at other opinions logically. I feel like Stevie is in alot of Lindsey's writing as well, not nearly as much as hers, but still there. God forbid I say that on the blue board or even the Rumours board. I would just be some delusional crazy shipper. The fact is though, I think they both write about each other. What that means or why they do is another story. Most of the time people write about what inspires them, what they have deep feelings about. Those feelings could be anger, fear, pain, loss, love..whatever. It certainly doesn't mean they are carrying a torch for each other in my mind. (although CERTAIN lyrics do make me scratch my head...like Thrown Down)

No kidding!! "In the middle of my room, I did not hear from you..." Exactly who was she hoping would step in and tell her not to marry Kim??

Even though I, too, believe Lindsey is in MANY of her songs, I'm not convinced this is necessarily about Lindsey. There were a lot of guys in between Lindsey and Kim. And somehow to me, it just doesn't sound like a Lindsey song (don't ask me to explain that). That's just me. But it is another reason I COMPLETELY agree with this:

Thrown Down? Stevie and Lindsey for sure. She says as much. It was written during the Dance and is about Lindsey and her. Do I think they're carrying on some great torrid affair now? I go back and forth. Usually I fall just ever so slightly to the "they have definitely been back together (in 1997-98), they have been apart, and they have probably hooked up since but are not together" right now side. Tomorrow, I may think they are. I do believe both carry unbelievably strong feelings for each other with them - closure? no way - and those feelings continue to come out in their music.

I could care less about trying to directly relate the subject matter of Stevie's lyrics with actual people or events. Her lyrics are often so oblique and subject to conjecture. I see most of her songs like dreams - full of imagery, feelings, disconnected senarios etc...nothing that really makes literal sense...but it creates a certain mood or impression.

I even think that Stevie doesn't really have a master plan when in comes to subject matter. She plays off her emotions and interweaves numerous factors/senarios and vague references into her lyrics. (She has mentioned something to this effect).
This is her folly and her genuis -- depending on your perspective.

Her songs, by her own interpretation, seem to often change meaning, depending on the Time/Space she is in at the moment. Landslide is a good example of that.

 I agree, and it's an element I really like in her music, her songs are always open to new meanings. There are some returning patterns and subjects, but I think she uses them to symbolize a lot of things, situations, memories. IMO she also talks of precise facts, friends, lovers and likes to send very private messages every now and then, but for me, in most cases , the "you " or "he" she writes about, can mean many events and people at the same time.

That is so true Lis. I am just one of those who enjoys trying to understand certain songs. But IF Beautiful Child was indeed written, way back when, about Mick, I would prefer to think she was thinking of someone else now when singing it. I definately do not want Mick in her, uh, timespace.

No, all Stevie's songs are not about Lindsey. This is confusing to you still? BLUE-GRAY EYES comes from the song "Blue Denim" and also the Buckingham Nicks song "Cathouse Blues."

Must be about Jimmy Iovine.

Interstingly, I think in the BN days, La Nicks wrote a lot (see Curtis!!!!!) more about things she saw on t.v. or in real life as opposed to the LB obsession, though that certainly was there in many songs. For example, she said (in a radio interview for TOSOTM) that Crying in the Night was about a lady in a western or something like that. Similarly, Cathouse Blues sound like a honky talk ditty while watching Gunsmoke. Anyway, this was just a ramble in a thought tossing way

Just finished watching "Blue Denim" a film from 1959, it struck me as odd that the context of the film surrounded unplanned pregnancy and abortion, and yes in good ol' 1959 PSA style it was a bit cheesy, nonetheless, Stevie came to mind. Yes I know I enjoy reading into Stevies' very opaque lyrics, hey what can I say they incite that analytical part of me, so I may be in left field but I can't help but correlate the similar circumstances and wonder if she ever watched it? Who knows? I simply found it interesting, thought I'd divulge my thoughts somewhere!

This reminds me of a similar theme involved in the movie "Street Angel" which is a silent film about a young girl with good intentions doing illegal things to help her mother, but when she tries to run away, her past keeps coming back to her. I think this has a lot to do with the theme of Street Angel the album, and trying to escape her own troubled past.

Agreed. I also think it was about Stevie seeing Lindsey again at the Inauguration.

When I hear Street Angel, I think Mick. It screams about the relationship they had in the late 70s. Mick is definately the "Charles Dickens character, with your top hat and scarf." IMO.

Me too!I loved it from the very first time I heard it-a very strong and powerful vocal IMO.It puts me in mind of Grace Slick's vocal on "White Rabbit",which blows me away every time I hear it:nod:.Peace all:wavey:

When SA originally came out, I remember there being discussion that Blue Denim was about Jon Bon Jovi. It also works within her explanation of some guy who came into and left her life quickly. Someone else in the thread mentions Bret Michaels, which is also a good possibility and appropriately timed.

Although I can not recall the specifics of the conversation from that time period, I do remember thinking Blue Denim being about Jon Bon Jovi made a lot of sense; there's also plenty of internet discussion about his varying eye color . I don't take credit for coming to this conclusion, nor can I credit the person from back then who stated this (it was just too long ago), but I always thought it made a lot of sense, fit in the timeline perfectly, and have always been perplexed that Jon Bon Jovi has never again been discussed within the context of this song. But since that time I have always thought Blue Denim to be about him.

Just my .02 cents...

I don't think she has even a remote clue as to what she wrote this song about. Unless it's a super old song, she most likely wrote it during the Klonopin haze. She has no conviction in her voice as she's searching her memory banks for the Blue Denim file. And when the says it was "probably" written about LB she ends the sentence with a question mark. However, the "understanding me...understanding you...is not an easy thing to do" totally suggests her relationship with Lindsey so who knows. I think maybe part of Lindsey is in there but maybe some other stuff too.

It's actually one of my favorite Stevie solo songs.

DO YOU THINK THINK THIS HAS TO DO WITH SHONDRA RHIMES KILLING OFF DR DEREK SHEPPARD?

I THINK SHE WAS HIS MISTRESS AND MEREDITH (see ie 'Monica" and Everyone Finds Out from SYW dvd) having the last name Gray...and when she was having her breast implants removed...she saw Meredith and realized it could never be...and McDreamy came in so Stevie turned her head because she didn't want him to A. bust her with his wife thinking she was stalking/creepy and B. she didn't want him to know her boobs weren't real...

But,

If Meredith didn't survive hospital shootings, drowning, plane crashes...etc....etc...

Stevie would have gotten the answer from Shondra that Meredith did a Katie Heigl move....and publicly will shame her for 40 years...after all, She made them who they are...

I digress...

So, do you think that might be the answer she was waiting for? A Crystal Vision?

See this is what irritates me. She writes songs and then releases them several years down the road and you can NEVER know exactly who they're about because by the time they're released she's with someone new! Like the stuff on Belladonna is either about Mick or Lindsey (most likely) but she was with Paul Fishkin or Jimmy Iovine (or some such nut) at the time of recording/release and you're like, huh? Now, who is this about?

I like that. I never cared to know what a song is about exactly. I want to form my own personal connection to the music. :-) Knowing what a song is about exactly, is like reading up on the personal lives of porn stars. It just ruins the experience.

Chris Rea has a song called Valentino, which is absolutely beautiful. It was my favorite song.

Until I read it was about his dog.

HIS DOG.

Forgive my ignorance but WTF is this? Ha I like how over a period of a few days, I've come back to reading this over and over.
