View Full Version : FWM: Touring This Year?
I know this might have been asked.. But does anyone know if FWM will tour this year (2005) or possibly next year? I'm hoping for a new CD from them as well ;)
Thanks-

Uh, I don't think we've heard anything concrete, or else we'd be talking about it endlessly. We all hold out hope, though. I think the consensus is that, if anything, one of them will be touring solo. And probably after the last half of the year.

Bummer. I guess all we can do is hope for the best.

Well, last September I did hear from a few band members or extended members that they were thinking of touring again this summer. Of course things always can change but I really hope that they do a few shows here and there. It just seems like they have some kind of unfinished business.
As for a new LP I think that Lindsey has said that he is coming out with something new this year but I will believe it when I see it.
I don't think that we will see a new Mac LP for a long time. :distress:

I certainly hope they DO NOT tour again this summer IMO they should have stopped the SYW tour after the Austrailian leg.I saw them twice on the 2003 leg and refused to go here in 2004.The SYW album had quit selling by then and they ran the risk of seeming to cash in on a summer tour like many oldies bands that do nothing but that .The addition of "Sara' to the set list was predictable.I'd rather keep my memory of seeing it performed live in December of 1979.They do not need to and should not tour this summer. They will really be percevied as one of these summer oldies/cash in bands if they do.

I'd like to see Lindsey, period. Never have. only Stevie solo and the Mac. He does kick a lot of ass, I've come to realize, and yes, Holiday Road would be great!

Is there any chance of Lindsey teaming up with Mick and John for a tour? It just seems to me like they really were on fire and their chemistry was so great. Plus they were the ones working his new solo stuff. It'd be weird for the three of them without Stevie, but perhaps if they just backed up Lindsey on a solo tour and Stevie had a seperate solo tour without them.
I personally would kill to see Lindsey with Mick/John/a hand full of others backing him up rather than the army of guitarists he had for his OOTC tour...

I could care less if they seemed like cash cows. I understand many people think they toured too long but I enjoyed it. The last three shows were the best of the entire two years IMHO. It is pretty obvious they made little to no money on the album. Touring is how they support their families. (song royalties, album royalties, blah blah, not enough) Nothing wrong with working hard.
I loved ALL the set changes made for the second leg, too.
Sara was breathtaking..different from 79 but equally lovely. I quite enjoyed seeing Stevie change up her hair and really work the song. IKINW and Red Rover were great as well.
As for solo touring...it seems unlikely that any of them will have a solo album to promote this summer..does that mean they should not tour? How about just a few dates? Maybe they like performing for the live audience? Maybe one or more members NEEDS the money? Maybe they like connecting with fans face to face? Maybe they are greedy cash cowns. Who knows. I am for whatever they want to do. Tour as a band, tour solo, go into the studio. I hope that at least one member will do some type of shows this summer and I have no problem paying to see them.
BTW...I like the idea of Lindsey touring with Mick and John but frankly I can't see that ever happening. I doubt Stevie's managers would go for the idea of Fleetwood and Mac plus the lead guitarist touring without Stevie. The same goes for BN. I cannot see Stevie and Lindsey doing any type of small tour should they EVER put BN out on cd. I am afraid they would feel it was disloyal to Mick and John.

my dream is the three of them only rockin'out small clubs for 90 minutes at a reasonable price. ONLY then I will come over to the states again........

I doubt Stevie's managers would go for the idea of Fleetwood and Mac plus the lead guitarist touring without Stevie.Stevie's managers would have nothing to do with it. It would be none of their business should Lindsey decide to tour with the Mac rhythm section -- Lindsey & Mick wouldn't call their tour a Fleetwood Mac tour.
In fact, Lindsey & Mick scheduled some shows in Ohio & California in 2001. The shows, which were billed as "Mick Fleetwood & Lindsey Buckingham," were announced in the summer calendars of some venues, including the Interlochen Arts Festival (Michigan) & another venue in Kettering, Ohio. These shows were ultimately canceled, possibly because work was going to begin on the Fleetwood Mac album.

The SYW album had quit selling by then and they ran the risk of seeming to cash in on a summer tour like many oldies bands that do nothing but that ."Ran the risk"? I think both the 1997 tour & the 2003/2004 tour were widely perceived as oldies/nostalgia tours. I think that'll be the cloak they hang on any future Fleetwood Mac shows, regardless of the specific context. When old farts mount big tours & big productions for big money, that's the popular view.
Your point about the album sales is problematic to me because by that reasoning, the band should have stopped touring around March 1980 instead of continuing through September.
The addition of "Sara' to the set list was predictable. It was predictable once one of the band members talked about the strong likelihood of adding it. For the twenty-three years preceding that (except for a few shows in Europe in '88), it was anything but predictable. In fact, it seemed like fantasy (or phantasy?).

I don't know much about the music biz, and maybe I'm naive, but I don't think the four of them have anything to do with the inflated ticket prices. If you go back and read articles from around the time of The Dance, Lindsey was specifically asked about the ticket prices, and he made a crack about the exhorbitant price of Eagles tickets ($150) and said Fleetwood Mac would never be asking that kind of money if he had anything to do with it. Here in Canada, the price was $150 for top tickets for this tour. I can't remember what my US tickets were - but I know by the time I put exchange on, they were way more than $150. I think one was $181. I think the people in charge see FM as a band with a potentially wealthy audience. Older, established, probably for the most part professional. That spells $$ - and they (the industry officials) probably figure if they can get it, they'll charge it.
As for touring... I would love to see any touring - anything that gets them out there and closer to me! ;) But I'm also dying for a new Stevie album, a new Lindsey album, and more so, a Buckingham-Nicks II album. My biggest fear is that we've seen their last tour.... :sorry:

You know this.... how?
Darling?
Honestly, I think there really are a lot of business dealings and such that artists are left out of. The music biz is not at all about the craft or the art or the creativity. That's the artist's part (real artists, not the pre-fab Britneys et al). The rest of it is all controlled by the money-makers. To them, artists are "product" and tours are "marketing opportunities." I think they set the prices, not the performers. They look at the numbers, they crunch them, they say this is what you have to charge to break even, this is what you have to charge to make a profit. We'd be silly and naive to think FM toured for... 15 months was it?.... because they couldn't stand to get off the road, or because there was huge demand. Sadly, they needed to add those dates to make back what was spent. It wasn't about what they wanted to do - it was dictated by the industry officials.

I think they are aware of the ticket costs and they must on some level know. I base this one:
the amount they get per show (WELL over $200,000 for the four)
the private 727 (as opposed to a bus )
the luxury suites (drops in the bucket IMO)
the 10 or more backing musicians/singers - etc.
and many other perks.
I do not begrudge them one bit as I would do the same. AND - apparently they priced themselves correctly because the market sustained the price for the most part in that the tour sold well - not sold out mind you - but well enough.

The artists are the ones who are really calling the shots when it comes to ticket prices, look no further than the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood Mac had a contract to get a minimum of $750k a show. That's what set their ticket prices.

Tell that the family living in the box in a vacant lot in a slum. I am sure your $10 on something you did not need could feed all of them. Thus, it applies to us on that scale. Personally, I would like to see Stevie and Lindsey do solo tours. Then, Fleetwood Mac should get their butts back into the studio and do another album, and then tour to promote that album. They need to make this new album sooner than later. It shouldn't be like Say You Will, which came out SIX YEARS after The Dance! They are getting up in years, unfortunately, and they need to start putting this valuable time to use. If they wait another six years like they did with the Say You Will project, we may never see another album. :distress:

I would love another tour--in any and/or all combinations of Stevie and Lindsey.
I don't consider them a strictly nostalgia band. However, many people do--and they expect to hear the old songs. That's just a fact of life. These songs mean something to people. They were songs played at the prom, or ones they made out to, or just stuff that helped them make sense of their lives. On the last Atlantic City show--there were these women in front of us and one of them, from the start of the concert, was going into spasms, screaming for Rhiannon. I just wanted to tap her on the shoulder and say, "Relax, dear. A concert without Rhiannon? Never. She's on her way." I didn't do that and it was almost worth it because the woman nearly fell to the ground when the opening notes sounded. She was just floored that she was hearing Rhiannon live.
It's a kick. And for many in the audience, it is a big nostalgia trip. And I like being around for that ride, but I personally love the new stuff even more. And they have been giving us a little bit of both.
What they can't give us is youth. Ours or theirs. And I'm afraid the day will come when concert promoters or whoever will not book them because they are "too old," and not enough of a draw for the younger audiences who spend more at these things (allegedly. My VISA card would prove them wrong).
As long as they can ride out this wave, I'm right there with them.
They put on great performances. They make me extremely happy and I just feel fortunate to have the experience that just a decade ago, seemed like a completely impossible dream.

The jet, hotel rooms, massages, various personal expenses get paid for by the band after the tour is over. Yes, I am sure they try and figure out what they will spend but their nightly take was negotiated before they went on the road and their expenses are paid for the members when the tour is completed. If they want to pay for extra expenses, like the jet, that is their choice...they earned the money. It's not like the accountants and lawyers sat down and said, ok, Stevie wants a jet, a masseuse, a luxurious suite so we have to jack the ticket prices up. She pays for her expenses. They would still earn the same set price per show even if they took a bus and stayed in the Econo Lodge because that is what the investors feel the band is worth to them.
As far as ticket prices...who really believes the band sits down and decides the prices? Of course they are involved to some extent but the people that front the money for this tour must have alot of say in how much is charged per seat. That is how they recoup what they invested and earn money. The band makes the same amount no matter what.

I think that might be rather sparse. Unless Stevie wants grab a guitar and jump in on rhythm (actually even if she does), I think they need some support guitar. It's not a matter of how talented Lindsey is, without the back-up, GYOW would end up being some simple power chords or just incredibly sparse. You mean the way it was from 1975 to 1982? Because the rhythm guitar on GYOW during those years was a very minor addition to the sound -- almost negligible.
However, there's the organ . . . I still don't know how I feel about that. I suppose it's okay to have somebody play the organ on things like GYOW or I'm So Afraid.
Same goes for Brett, without him they drop half the act. I don't like the growing presence on stage but most of their songs would hardly work without rhythmn guitar or keys. Most of their songs worked beautifully without rhythm guitar onstage, & many of their songs would work just fine without keyboards. During the years with Christine, the keyboards were about half the time not a prominent part of the texture, just some little dillies off in the sonic background. Apparently, it's difficult to get a keyboardist-for-hire to sink back into the background.
Of course, the real problem with keyboards-for-hire these days for Fleetwood Mac is that they overrely on keyboard hardware rather than actual keyboard playing. So it's not really Brett we should blame but the whole band because it's the whole band who agrees to the overuse of computer chips in these state-of-the-art synthesizers (which provide everything from instruments to vocals to "found sounds").

As for Stevie brushing up, it seems dubious. We have recordings of her playing "Rhiannon" thirty years ago & we have recordings of her playing "Rhiannon" six or seven years ago, & over that twenty- to twenty-five-year period, she shows no progress whatsoever in her playing.
It's the damnedest thing I've ever heard.

Remember the random thumping of keys that was Dreams on the Rumours doc? I suspect Lindsey has a more adquate musical intuition that allows him to in the least avoid stumbling over the notes. Most who are so skilled at one instrument have an automatic advantage when it comes to sitting at a piano.
La Nicks can play it better than the chords she played in that sniglet of Dreams - on the ABC special for the TISL tour, she plays a little of HAEWAFY and that little bit sounded delightful if not melodic. But, she is no pro by any means. I do think, however, she knows enough to provide a chord rythm to the three others
Interestingly, Stevie actually played guitar onstage in the early 70's  and has said she could again if she practiced. Thus, she has some talent in guitar as well, though no way near approaching LB's

Well I'm not sure what HAEWAFY is but I believe you. I would appropriate the last bit to say that her guitar skills are not approaching even my 'I can play Day Tripper and Norwegian Wood' *talent*.
THAT BAD  :xoxo: ;)
I have never heard her play guitar unless she does so on an old boot and I so not know it. If Brian J. reads this or maybe David - do either of you have anything where La Nicks plays guitar. I think those were Mac pics I saw - but they could be Fritz or BN ones
Interestingly, CM played guitar on, I think, the Tusk tour. But, I may be wrong on that.

La Nicks can play it better than the chords she played in that sniglet of Dreams - on the ABC special for the TISL tour, she plays a little of HAEWAFY and that little bit sounded delightful if not melodic. But, she is no pro by any means. I do think, however, she knows enough to provide a chord rythm to the three othersHer best playing & singing simultaneously was "Sisters" on the 20/20 program in 1980. But Stevie's piano "style" just isn't something I can imagine being of much use to Fleetwood Mac in a live setting, & I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. Being able to play some chords is not the same thing as being able to play those chords within the context of a band: with the latter, you have to have the ability to "lock in" & blend -- it's an additional set of skills.
Interestingly, Stevie actually played guitar onstage in the early 70's  and has said she could again if she practiced.Did she actually play during a concert? It's possible that the photos we have are from rehearsals for GYOW (we talked about the Rumours rehearsal & her guitar playing in an old thread).

It's a very little-girly sound, but it's clean & on the meter.
Interestingly, CM played guitar on, I think, the Tusk tour. That was it -- the first leg of the tour when the band played "Save Me a Place." My hunch is that Chris is better on guitar than Stevie is; Chris played bass in an old band in the 1960s. But maybe any difference in skill between those two would be minimal. Stevie just isn't, in general, terrifically gifted as an instrumentalist. Doesn't seem to be her thing. . . .kind of like John's two or three examples of "singing" over the years.

Yea - her style is not exactly an accompanying one - to say the least  I was just thinking about all the garage bands I have heard where the "keyboardist" just literally plays three chords to fill out the sound. Personally, I think she would be too nervous to do it becuase her playing is not that great. But, her playing on the SOTM demo is good - not great - but good and if I remember correctly it was in that segment as well. I think she can play fairly well but in a simplistic manner. I think she just does not want to play too well lest they make her on stage

That very well could be. She is not in her stage outfit. But, they are old pix and could be prior to the black schpeel.
I think it would be interesting to see LB and La Nicks play by themselves - just the two of them - to Lansdslide and, perhaps even more so, SOTM or GDW. That would be STUNNING to me, esp. after having grown tired of the methodical performances of these two over the last 30 years

I think LB and La Nicks have both said CM is a true classically trained musician, while neither of them are. I nfact, LB and La Nicks have said they consciously eschewed any significant formal training because they feared the structure would box in or inhibit their creativity. In fact, although she probably can read a chord sheet, I think La Nicks has said she cannot read music - not that that is any indication of talent becuase many, like Elton John, cannot as well. But, I agree, I think CM was the most musically talented in the band as far as knowledgeable playing -- I miss her :distress:

Hey! I can give you some blues ramblings, which I'm going to guess is more than can be said for Stevie. Oh if you could only have seen me back when I was forced to play Jesus songs for my school. I blame them for my subsequent self-repulsion.
The visual of you singing to Jesus is one I shall keep for a long long time

I think LB and La Nicks have both said CM is a true classically trained musician, while neither of them are. In fact, LB and La Nicks have said they consciously eschewed any significant formal training because they feared the structure would box in or inhibit their creativity.Which is just silly on their part. Moreover, I think too many fans mystify Christine's "classical training." All that type of training really means -- unless you're being trained as a concert pianist -- is that 1) you are being taught to read music using any of the traditional method books like Schaum or Thompson, 2) you are learning something about the classical repertoire & composers as you go along, & 3) you are learning music theory in a traditional way.
Classical training doesn't necessarily make you a better player. It just builds your frame of reference.
I think CM was the most musically talented in the band as far as knowledgeable playingAs in instrumentalist, I think Lindsey or John has more talent than Chris (who is technically very ordinary but who has an alluring personal style of playing). And going back, Peter, Jeremy, Danny & Bob Welch struck me as more talented instrumentally.

I pretty much agree - I was just saying that CM's "knowledgeable playing" was perhaps better in the sense she could actually sit down and read a sheet of music, etc., as opposed to LB and La Nicks who must rely on instict, limited formal knowledge, etc. I was commenting on the ability to read music tends to open up things more quickly to someone than not being able tyo read it. I was not saying CM was technically better or that her end result was better - though in the case of songs like "Songbird" and "Why" that may be true to my ears, which is of course subjective
Having said that, I am unsure if Peter, Jeremy, Danny & Bob Welch read music. If so, then that argument would not apply to them. But and in any event, IMO - no one has been able to have any better playing (trained or not) than Peter Green. I think he is amongst the top three best I have ever heard.
As for La Nicks on Whole Lotta Trouble - who knows - there is alot going on in that song  - so it is hard to tell who plays what

Yep, she plays guitar on the "Twisted" demo, as well as rhythm guitar (and harmonica!) on "Free Fallin'," and synth guitar and synth strings on the "Sweet Girl" demo.
She's more of a dabbler, than a musician. :)

Like that freaky aliens singing sound on Peacekeeper that is clearly audible on the Buffalo boot. Gah.

Just catching up here ... but I can't help but ask... what difference does it make if she plays or not?
Stevie's primary instrument is her voice. Why is she seen as less of a musician because she plays rudimentary guitar and piano? I'd venture to guess that Lindsey on drums would be migraine-inducing (not to mention hilarious) and John on keyboards would have the dogs a-howlin'! Is Mick less of a drummer because he can't sing?

I was just saying it could five the four a fuller sound. I agree La Nicks is a musician - I do not think she can play an instrument very well as she readily admits, but when she wants to - she can make her voice sound like the best solo from any player

I, of course, think she has charisma for the ages. Sometimes i watch her live performances from back in the day, and i weep with the beauty that I will never see the likes of again. yes, I'm a cryer. or a weeper, whatever. Especially at beauty. For instance, sometimes i weep when i'm watching gymnastics, cause it is so impossible and magnificent. Or at various other sports triumphs. Most often it is at musical performances, or acting performances. What can i say, maybe i am overexpressive. (maybe  ). Don't worry, though, I rarely weep in public. :D But crying is a great way to relieve tension. I mean, you always feel better after, and it's cheaper than therapy   Kind of like sex, but more readily available to me, and more private.
Maybe i'll call on a racial stereotype here and say that Italians are too emotional, and possibly crazy? :)

Banjo is no struggle for a guitarist. Moreover, Lindsey's been playing banjo since his late teens or early 20s -- his folky days. He didn't learn banjo just for "The Dance."
He plays most of the instruments on all his solo albums. His most interesting piano track is the one on his first solo album for "September Song." He says he doesn't have any trouble with most plectrum-type instruments, but he's not really a pianist.
Of the various keyboard tracks Stevie has recorded for her solo albums, the one that stands out as obviously Stevie is the electric piano on "Love Changes": it's a rhythmic series of chord changes at the top of every measure that's just right for Stevie's ability.
