Hey - so my sister just mentioned that she's heard that Estelle Getty has dementia...so I tried looking stuff up on th web to no avail - she can't remember where she heard it....so any of you know anything about it? Is it true etc.....sad considering she's the youngest of the Golden Girls right? anyway...just thought I'd ask :p

As far as I know, she has Parkinson's. She was fine until about four years ago. Her last project was, I believe, Stuart Little. They did an Intimate Portrait bio on her a couple of years ago when she was just starting to get the shakes and tremors. :( She's a real spitfire that lady, I wish her the best and hope she isn't in much pain.

I also heard she has dementia, as well as Parkinson's. I think the dementia was brought up durig the recent reunion of the Girls last year....the reason why she didn't attend.

Yea she does have it. Bea Arthur has recently said at the new Golden Girls DVD release party that Estelle doesn't remember her anymore :( :( :(

Entertainment Tonight talked about Estelle on Friday's edition actually... advertising the segment with one of their typically sensationalistic taglines: "Descent Into Dementia!"
As if it's a new ride at Disney World. :distress:
They talked to Rue McClanahan, who said that Estelle's condition has deteriorated to a point where she no longer remembers her, Betty White or Bea Arthur.
She related the story of one of Betty's recent visits to Estelle, after which, Estelle told her caregiver, "that was a nice woman."
(Betty herself related this story in a recent interview, too.)
It's all very sad. :(

I believe Rue McClanahan is the youngest by a whole 10 years and THEN Estelle Getty is the second youngest, but her, Bea Arthur, and Betty White are all within a year of eachother. I'd say Betty's aged the best, considering she's the oldest.

Oh that's sad.
Lifetime has really bought the Golden Girls out. I love watching it on weeknights after work. What a great show. When I was little, I just didn't get it.
I am sorry to hear about Estelle. It must be so hard for her friends and family..but maybe not too bad for her unless she is getting the head shakes...my grandmother had that but gets shots her her eyes area because she also has vertigo and the two just didn't mix.

I think it's common for people with Parkinsons to also experience dementia. My grandmother had Parkinsons and used to think that bears were after her and that her nurses were trying to push her down the stairs in her wheelchair. The paranoia can be really disturbing. It's very difficult to watch someone go through that. Fortunately, she had good days mixed with the bad.
I too love the Golden Girls. When I was a younger, my mom used to tell me I wasn't allowed to watch those "filthy old women," but of course I did anyway. Now with Lifetime, I can watch them every single day. :p So there, mom! At any rate, I hope Estelle isn't suffering terribly.

Thanks for all the info guys!!
My mom never minded me watching the Golden Girls - she was pretty lax with my tv viewing....I just couldn't watch R-rated movies :p - I'd go across the street to a friend's house to watch those haha...
My best friend, however, was banned from the Golden Girls after she used the word, "slut"
I used to love that show - and still do - I can't wait until May when Season 2 comes out on DVD :D

Okay, I have to ask about this. Did you honestly think Punky was funny? When you watch it now do you think it's good? And if so, is it good for nostalgic reasons, or do you actually think it's good? sorry, but during the big punky craze at my school  I watched the show and thought it was really trite, etc. Maybe I missed something?
Oh, and - LHOP was good, i'd watch that again. :p

I got the first season for purely nostalgic reasons - but watching it - there are episodes I really like still....and some I don't.
I don't like the episodes that are split into little like segments...like when Henry takes the kids fishing or walks them to school...
But I like the full episodes - I don't find them uproariously funny - but they're still entertaining to me :D

I don't find it funny (though I did as a six year old), I just find it entertaining and good to watch for nostalgic reasons. The same cannot be said for Small Wonder... I didn't find Gilligan's Island funny in the least, but people love that show. It's a mystery to me.
I have a hard time envisioning a little kid watching Punky and finding it "trite," though. Maybe unappealing, but not "trite."

Remember they shot some of them as 15 minute epsiodes because of Sunday football? I used to get so mad.
And I still laugh my ass off at Mrs. Garret and Henry. They're hilarious and had great chemistry.

Right there are shows that I used to watch that I now realize are just bad - Small Wonder is one of them...
Gilligan's Island is another...
Sadly I can no longer watch Three's Company though I loved that as a kid....
Anyone remember that one show, Out of This World? Where the girl could freeze time by touching her finger tips together??

well, I was 10 or so. I just thought the acting sucked, and the plotlines were unbelievable and the dialogue was overly sappy. I think trite is a good word for all that. Perhaps i didn't think of the word "trite" when i was 10, but...I might have. I think i did wish, however, that my hair was straight like punky's...

Yeah, unfortunately he's another one who alligns himself with the very same political party that's actively seeking to make sure he has no rights and that would just as soon spit in his face as look at him.
I never can figure that out, but such is life. Maybe he feels he can bring forth change from within the party, as the Log Cabin Republicans do.
Anyway, that's another conversation for another time! :)

And I'm surprised he hasn't had his Republican status revoked after corrupting America with Desperate Housewives. :p

I remember Estelle's Intimate Portrait where they talked about how she was there in New York starring in Torch Song Trilogy when AIDS first broke in the gay community. Bless her little heart, she really did a lot to help those who were suffering from it. She's an original and a true class act, IMO.
