"This is a group participation, so anyone who wants to TUSK along, feel free" (1979-1980).

"Can that girl play the piano or what?!" (Don't Stop, 1980).

There are too many to name, though his canned speeches and lines form The Dance and SYW tours have the most cringe-worthy ones. Every time he speaks he sounds as if he had just been reading the dictionary and is trying to make himself sound as intellectual as humanly possible.

From the Concert for the Environment, Aug. 8, 1986

"We're really really excited about this project [Tango in the Night] not only becuase it's the best thing we've ever done, but because in the process, it's been a very healing thing, it's healed a lot of wounds that were left open for the last few years."

I went to one of the Dance shows and Lindsey was repeating his speaking parts from the Dance dvd word for word. The audience was kinda grumbling and I almost thought they were going to start booing him  I think he got the message eventually and tried to change it up a little. It was really strange, like he could'nt talk unless he rehearsed

There's also his Melbourne 1980 hooting - proving it's not what you say, but how you say it. He basically screeches "Stevie! SteevAY!! STEVAY!!! This is a song of STEVAY'S!!! It's called DRRREAMS!!!"

The written word can't do it justice.

Was it in a mocking manner? If so then I would quite enjoy that actually.

Yeah, kind of. More of a drunken manner - still enjoyable, IMO. He sounded like the husband in the movie Overboard when he's talking into the giant seashell: "Tofuti...ooohhh...I love you Tofuti."

Like when people are drunk & decide they like the sound of their own voice.

Yeah, he was enjoying the sound of his voice. If he had kept going, it would have turned into a recreation of that scene in A Streetcar Named Desire. I'm sure a tambourine would have come flying into his direction.

I honestly can't stand listening to him talk. He's so full of **** (PR).

Healing, organic, process, cleansing, reconvening, rolling my album into tango, rolling my songs to the dance, rolling my album into SYW, lounge acts, more freedom to rock, blah blah blah blah blah

it all means, "i'm hard to get along with, buy my album"

One of the most cringeworthy

1) From every single Dance show they did - "Well, time limits us a bit at this point, so we're going to play a few more then get out of here."

WTF? Everytime I hear him say that I cringe. Who flippin' cares? Of course, they eventually have to quit playing, it just seemed dumb to have to point it out - kind of like raining on the parade or something. Say something cool or funny - not something so blah.

Add to that some more things he has said in countless interviews--'putting his emotions over in one corner of the room' when they did Rumours, how his 'solo work is like painting whereas working w/ FM is like moviemaking', how 'leaving in 1987 was a survival move both physically and emotionally', how 'working w/ the band used to be bittersweet, but now it's just sweet.' :D

He can be like a broken record.

'solo work is like painting whereas working w/ FM is like moviemaking'
-Lis

From June 1981's Musical Player and Listener interview:

"They've had a few years technical experience, but they can't make the connection from feeling the song to this, to this, and do it all the way a painter paints, where suddenly all the intuition takes over and you're just there doing it. "

More to the point, Creem February 1983:

"Much as he adores being in the studio, he'd much rather be there on his own — as he was for whole great hunks of Tusk — than with Stevie, Christine, John and Mick, since "making a Fleetwood Mac album is sort of like making a movie — everything is thought out on a conscious level, and then second- or third-guessed. The approach I prefer, though, is more like painting. Painters will tell you that they often begin work with one thing in mind, but that, after a while, the work leads them in a completely different direction. "It's more of a subconscious process. Working that way, I find that I experience the work a lot more intimately. Being that connected can't help but have a vitalizing effect on the music."

Didn't he say something once, twice, or 345 times about when you've got a good thing, you shouldn't run it into the ground? lol

"I've seen Stevie's show, I've seen Christine's show. To me, they both bordered on being lounge acts, simply because they were resting so heavily on Fleetwood Mac's laurels." ...Okay so maybe that isn't so much stupid, more bitchy... (I don't know if Lindsey said this in an interview or what, I found it in a book of my mother's: Bitch Bitch Bitch.)

There's also the press conference from around the time of Clinton's inauguration, one that Stevie was unable to attend. It's on the "Unbroken Chain" DVD. Lindsey is rambling on rather pointlessly. The looks Christine gives him are rather priceless, IMO.

...neither of those were onstage...:sorry:

Yes he did say the lounge act remark, ugh, how snotty. Your mom's book sounds hilarious BTW.

And boy he does say some unnecessary things in the press thing for Clinton-- like he's trying to distance himself from FM as much as possible, that this was 'just a one off thing' and he'd been much happier since leaving the band and had his own solo thing going on, blah blah blah --and Chris does give him a couple of pointed looks LOL. Did he think he'd ever be invited to play on his own for the president of the US? A little decorum, please.

He's lucky he's so talented and incredibly hot, or I don't think I'd care for him much LOL. ;)

Well this isn't something he SAID onstage but something he did. During the MTV taping for the Dance, I loved when he put his hand under his chin during Stevie's emotional Landslide "moment". Then he has to wreck the spontaneaty and sweetness of that "moment" by doing it during every single Landslide performance for the first half of the tour. UGH. How annoying? He did quit doing it after awhile, thank Heavens, but the genuine, heartfelt "moment" was forever tarnished in my mind.

Lindsey seems to have a huge problem speaking candidly and unrehearsed while onstage. Whenever he tries it, he ends up stuttering, mumbling, repeating and rambling on and on with no real point. It does make him rather endearing and human though in my eyes.

He also gets asked the same questions over and over so he gives very similar answers, unlike Miss Irrationality who has a new life story with each day.

LOL

He's always asked stupid a$$ questions over and over ad nauseum.

"So, GYOW is about Stevie, tell us that story."

"You left FM to go solo, tell us about that."

"Rumours is the only album the public cares about, tell us your feelings on that."

AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! I don't blame him for rehearsing speeches. :(

I suppose looking at things in a vacuum it's easy to forget why he said those things. After all, it's not like he didn't have his arm twisted by the record company and didn't have band members laying public guilt trips on him to go to the inauguration. It's not like some of those same bandmembers hadn't given interviews to the press saying that they were much happier with him gone from the band so they could be a "real band" again. I just can't imagine why Lindsey might have said some of that stuff. ;)

Here are some random quotes that kind of relate. There are more, but these are some that I have off-hand.

In Conversation Batabak Interview - 1988
MICK: "Quite frankly, I think our audience was more concerned that Fleetwood Mac was still going as a band than being concerned about losing Lindsey Buckingham. And I have to say that's really how it is and it's nice to know that."

Rock Stars with Timothy White - October 31, 1987
Stevie: (about the first rehearsal with Billy and Rick) "The first rehearsal was probably the best rehearsal, amazingly enough. They've all been good, but the first one, it was like I knew instantly that when we step onto the big stage that this is going to be wonderful. The neatest thing about this whole thing is it sounds really great in this small rehearsal room. It sounds like Fleetwood Mac. If you walk outside and listen from the parking lot the first thing you would say is... it's not like you would say, "Ah, I don't hear Lindsey." What you hear is Fleetwood Mac."

That's why I love her. :D At least she shakes things up a bit and provides some entertainment. I think Stevie gets asked the same questions over and over again too, she just doesn't reply the same way every time so it's not as noticeable. IMO.

And not to bash Lindsey at all because I love :xoxo: him so much, but I have interviews from 1980, 25 years ago, where he is using the painting/movie making analogy!!! I'm sorry, but there is just no excuse for that ;) :sorry:

Look at the set list for his solo tour and there are what 8 or 9 fleetwood mac songs :laugh:I wonder whether he meant something in addition to just the selection of songs for a solo concert. "Resting so heavily on Fleetwood Mac's laurels" to me also refers to various aspects of presentation, staging, pacing -- maybe I'm reaching here. But I think something in Stevie's solo shows besides just the choice of songs themselves made Lindsey think it was all too derivative of Fleetwood Mac concerts.

I think the comparison he draws between Fleetwood Mac shows & Christine's solo shows is less valid. I saw one of her shows (apparently it was her last) in Los Angeles, & thought it had the same sort of low-key ambience & let's-try-it-on-for-fun spirit that Lindsey's '93 solo concerts had -- a nice contrast to the typical Fleetwood Mac arena-ceiling toppler. Stevie's shows are just big rock concerts, but there's nothing else she could really do.

In fact, her show was even less programmatic than his. Essentially, her show was just a solid rehearsal in front of an audience, whereas his was an intricately planned presentation of specific musical & thematic ideas with a noticeable narrative or dramatic arc.

The funny thing is David. I saw LB's show in a "lounge". For real, it was called Peabody's Down Under.

And yes Christine's show was very intimate. It was so much better than the VHS she put out. What a bad production that was.

Well, it's possible he could have been talking aesthetics  , but it has never really been an option for her to play smaller venues. She has always had to put on a big rock show. I would love to see Stevie play smaller more intimate venues where she could be more low-key and just play whatever songs she wanted. Maybe we will get to see that one day :blob2:

I actually thought that was what he was referring to. Even if it wasn't, it seems like there was a hesitation in playing FM songs and that were it up to him and without attendance issues, he would have simply played his solo work.

Ok, but in the real world he came to the realization that was'nt gonna happen. Even if you had a tour called "Were not playing the hits" (which I rather like as a name for a tour ;) ) there would still be people calling out for them and acting bored when you play new or unfamilar stuff. Maybe his comment was'nt dumb just naive. Would'nt it be really cool if Fleetwood Mac played a Ledgie concert and did all the songs that we requested? Now who's being naive :]

I guess IMO it was just an odd forum for him to make those kind of statements.

Sure, I can see how it seemed that way at the time, but I suppose I just don't really think it was that odd in retrospect. He'd finally gone truly solo and finally had an album out and didn't want to be completely buried under FM again. But he got pressure from all sides to be somewhere he had some misgivings about. He could have been less forward or blunt probably, but since he was being asked about band relations, Mick's book, reunion possibilities, etc., he needed to have it be known that he was really headed somewhere else in his life and career at that point. The band had said they were happier without him after he left, and so I don't think it so bad that he returned the favor. I suspect it was probably quite true for both parties when they said it.

Out of curiosity, who said they felt like a 'real band' again once he'd left? I don't think I've ever heard that quote. Was it Mick?

I think it was John. But my memory might be rusty. Mick and Stevie both said similar things as well, so I may be mixing it up.

Yeah, when you have jerkheads screaming out "Where's Stevie!?" at your concert, I wouldn't be too thrilled either. I get the idea that Lindsey hasn't had much of an idea that he has fans who are really into HIS music, until, perhaps, the SYW tour. Many Ledgies had a chance to get up front or meet him this tour and let him know we want a solo album and we love his music. I "told" him through a letter and a book I made for him. Joe and Lux told him, Pattie told him, etc.

Perhaps, we started a Ledgie Lindsey solo revolution. Hee! :D

He's done interview after interview of dumba$$es asking him stupid a$$ questions about things he's talked about till he was blue in the freakin' face. Bleh. He's got people screaming out for GYOW and Stevie at HIS shows. He can't even seem to do a Soundstage without her, so...sheesh. I know she only did a couple of songs, but it would be nice to have been Stevie free...that is, unless he asked her to do it and it wasn't a suggestion. Perhaps, he did. :)

As a fan, it's uber-frustrating for me to hear about these things. I can't imagine how it feels to him. :(

Mick and Stevie both said similar things as well, so I may be mixing it up.I remember Christine making the (valid) point that producing "Behind the Mask" was a refreshing change (I'm paraphrasing here) from the older Fleetwood Mac albums because so much of it was tracked live, & months weren't spent on all the picky minutiae.

She was probably ambivalent about all that, however, because I think she really admired the way Lindsey created albums.

Plus, I think all the older members of the band were excited about having two guitarists (& an extra voice) for the live situation. It definitely opens up possibilities after having been a quartet for so long.

In that press conference in question, Lindsey strikes me as nervous & uncomfortable, which in turn makes the others seem as if they were walking on a few eggshells. Had I been Lindsey, I would not want to have participated in such a press conference -- it was, after all, a Fleetwood Mac event & Lindsey was not a member of Fleetwood Mac & was really trying to forge an identity away from that machine. In addition, he was still feeling a little burned by The Book -- apologies may have been made at that point but apparently hadn't totally sunk in.

I get the idea that Lindsey hasn't had much of an idea that he has fans who are really into HIS music, until, perhaps, the SYW tour.I think you're right, Christy. In a way, Lindsey seems unaware of the extent of the admiration thousands of people have for his work -- the same boat Christine & even John & Mick are in. I have always said this band (numerous configurations) is just about the least fan-friendly of all the major bands. That's why things like fan clubs are such sad jokes in the context of this band (sad because it's hard to see young fans get bilked generation after generation).

On the other hand, I think Stevie has been the savviest of all of them with regard to fans. What people think of her writing has always been important to her, & she has always taken whatever steps she could to foster such a relationship, & it has certainly rewarded her over the decades -- not just the commercial success but people's devotion to her is unabatedly strong.

Lindsey & Chris, for example, have rarely if ever given any indication that such a relationship with fans is important to them -- or even interesting to them. This sounds harsh, but I think it's true: They have made their own beds over the years. If at this point they're unhappy because they don't know the extent or even the character of the admiration some people have for their work, they really can't blame anyone else -- including Stevie Nicks fans.

But, really, how do we know they're even unhappy about such a situation? They may be just fine with it (Christine seems to be).

He's taken steps lately to bridge that gap a little bit. Baby steps. He met with fans when they approached him, and I've never heard of him treating a fan badly. He put up that message on January 1st on his website. The SYW tour, with the guitar playing, the autographs, shaking hands, etc. was a step forward.

He's trying in his own way. :)

I think a LOT of that comes from having success, THAT kind of success, happen so (relatively) late in life. Bands that have that "fan-friendly" attitude have had the mass adulation since their late teens or early-twenties. (Beatles, Stones, most country artists, etc)

Right. I think change of any kind, after having done something one way for a long time, can be refreshing and exciting. And that works both ways - for the band and for Lindsey. From almost all accounts, there was a lot of tension between several bandmembers during the recording of Tango. When one main player takes himself out of that environment, it's undoubtedly going to shift everything, make people reevaluate, and spark a sense of renewal in some way. While some of the comments about Lindsey's leaving being good for the band were probably personal shots at him, I don't it's fair to say all of them were. Many weren't. They were about embracing change and enjoying the new situation. And I don't think Lindsey was a jerk for feeling the same way and saying so about his departure and his sense of renewal without them.

Maybe I'm missing something, but these don't seem to imply the band is BETTER OFF without Lindsey, just that they can continue to function well without him. So.... I'm not sure why he would need to get "revenge" for those things at the press conference.

What did he expect them to say? "Lindsey's gone. We blow chunks now. But come to our shows anyway." And Lindsey didn't think twice about saying the same types of things after Christine left. You could even say he went further as he talked about how John could play better without having to worry about Christine.

The anger at Mick was justified, but that wasn't Chris's or John's fault. I guess I just don't see it. Maybe there are harsher quotes out there? Otherwise I don't think it's justified at all.

'Blow chunks', I used to hear that phrase often at Marty's fraternity parties, not so much anymore!

LB said exactly the same types of things after Chris left. of course one has to put a postive spin on it, 'yes we will go on and we are still good' etc but sometimes i guess i felt like LB did go overboard w/ some if his comments. The part about John playing better without Chris around- yeesh. Someone actually asked a question about that comment in John's Q&A, and it was in the last group that went out to him before he decided he wanted to quit. Of the four questions in the group he only answered the 'easy' pet question LOL, i was dying to know his feelings about what LB said.

The anger at Mick was justified, but that wasn't Chris's or John's fault. I guess I just don't see it. Maybe there are harsher quotes out there? Otherwise I don't think it's justified at all.

LB was entitled to feel how he felt and or say whatever he wanted about leaving FM...and i suppose he may well have been pissed off at Mick about that book...but i guess I still don't really feel that press conference was the appropriate place for him to vent. ?? It's like he got all heavy and just dragged the mood down a bit. However there are other interview snippets of him and Mick, I think, where he was much more chipper and positive.

I think this is the quote you are talking about. I feel like such a nerd knowing where all these quotes come from, but here is the exact quote from Christine:

Rock Steady - 1990
Christine: "It sounds like a band playing together. It doesn't sound like lots of little overdubs put on, you know, in excess..at least on top of the drum machine type things. It sounds like Mick has gone out there and played the drums and John went out there and played the bass...it's not sort of constructed."

In all interviews I have ever heard Christine (and John too, but he doesn't talk much) give she has never had but good things to say about Lindsey, whereas, Stevie and Mick would always put their own little jabs in there. After Christine left, I felt the things Lindsey said about Christine were disappointing and somewhat disrespectable. I know he probably did not mean it to sound that way, but that's the impression I got. Even he said that he was more or less glad Christine was gone because of his own selfish reasons. At least he admitted his selfishness, but I thought Christine deserved alot more respect from a man with whom she obviously respected and admired.

John did too. From an August 1992 interview:

About the box set- "It's a four CD package and should be out for Christmas. What's even more special about this is that Lindsey's back with us, too."

how did LB's involvement come about: "The last show FM did was Christine's farewell concert. Lindsey came on and sat in for a couple numbers and really enjoyed being back on the boards with us lot. I don't think he's played w/ a band since he's left, as he's responsible for almost all the instruments on his solo album. So when this came up it was obviously advantageous to have some new tracks for the anthology and so we approached him and asked if he would be interested. And he said yes."

Interviewer then said LB's a good influence on the band, very creative in a lateral way... : "Oh yes, a genius. But it seems to me that that he needs other people to bounce off, even though he can do it all himself. I haven't heard his album, and I'm sure it will be good, but I know he thrives on bouncing ideas off other people."

Quite complimentary IMO. Really the only thing he said that was maybe a bit below the belt was about Mick LOL: ""I'm not a 'socialite' like Mick Fleetwood. He's on the go every single night, which may or may not account for his upcoming divorce." ;)

What wasn't justified? If John and Christine and Mick and Stevie all felt comfortable making comments about being happier in the band after Lindsey's departure for various reasons, was it so uncalled for that Lindsey should say the same thing about his situation? I guess I can sort of see objecting to the forum in which he made those comments to some degree, but this was the first time in a press conference setting that Lindsey was asked about these things since he left the band. I just don't think it's that hard to understand why he made them.

Mick said he thought it was a relief to Stevie to have Lindsey out of the band after he initally left, and he thought she was able to work in a more relaxed way with Rick and Billy. Stevie herself made similar comments. I don't remember, but I have to doubt that I really enjoyed reading that back when the comments were fresh because I missed Lindsey, but I didn't think Mick and Stevie were being jerky or less than truthful about it. Relations between ex-couples often just have a certain residue that makes things testy from time to time and doesn't go away. I haven't any difficulty believing Chris and John experience that too, and so I have a hard time seeing something insulting about Christine in that comment by Lindsey about John maybe finding it easier to relax.

I don't know. I suppose all these little comments they make about one another just touch the little areas of sensitivity we all seem to have about our favorites.

Lindsey sure was testy at that inauguration press conference. He seemed to be going out of his way to purposely stamp out notions in the media of a future FM reunion. I wonder why he even bothered to show up at that thing, until I recall how many times Stevie has said she called him herself and begged, threatened, and bullied him into agreeing to perform for the President. Maybe he was pissed that she didn't show for the media that day? I thought her not being there put him on the defensive to answer questions he didn't know how to answer. He didn't really want to do the show in the first place, it seems. He should have stayed away from that press thing unless the suits wanted him there to get some free press for his solo tour. It's the only thing that makes any sense about him participating in any of it.

Oh, almost forgot. Dumbest thing on stage...anything about cycles.

Dumbest thing ever...that tripe in the Destiny Rules doc about the guy in the two bedroom. bwahaha! As much as I hate to agree with Mick on any point concerning sincerity, LB is so full of it he makes Mick look thoughtful and measured by contrast. I have to sympathize with LB a little. He probably wants to scream at Mick and call him a two-faced backstabber for reversing field on the double album, so he goes into his usual pseudo-intellectual schtick for lack of a better way to express himself.

I think and have always thought that the remaining four had much more of a right to be mad at LB for leaving. I mean he withdrew at the last minute and left them in a bind. There really is no two ways about that and that is how it was not matter what reasons he said publicly. I mean, to hear LB in some of those quotes, he just sounds like sour grapes to me. FM moved on because they had to - he left them no choice. I get the impression some people think they should not have or that they did was some sort of horrible and rude thing. Again, LB left them high and dry; what were they supposed to do - never talk about it - LB certainly did not follow that axiom  If someone did that to me, I would be a little angry with them. But, the band has moved on past it, so I guess we should as well

Edit - part of the original did not post  I also wanted to say I know that LB alleged conflict in the band and a hostile work environment as reasons for not wanting to go on the road, where he felt it would be worse. But, I have always wondered why the remaining four were willing to live with that alleged strife, but not LB. CM has said since like the 70's that she was ready to quit. La Nicks could have continued in her solo stuff and really came back to FM out of loyalty and, I think, because she really likes FM. Mick,. well, he is always ready to put alot aside for $$$$ And John, who knows. Interestingly, I think there was some flickering of the LB SN romance thing (what else is knew  ) on some level and that was too much for LB to live through again. Maybe Stevie jilted him - who knows - but it was telling that she said afterward that they "finally broke up" and he replied "she'd been with lots of guys after me" or something like that. I mean I just can't help but feel that his actions were similar to those of a jilted lover. But, that is my opinion and I do not expect anyone (save most of Nancy's board :wavey: shippers  ) to agree with me.

Is this it?

The Island Ear - September 4, 1994
(About Bill Clinton)"He loved our song, it was his favorite of all time. It was perfect for Bill. Actually, what was even more amazing was getting Lindsey on stage with the four of us again. It took the President of the United States to do that. We all didn't think Lindsey would do it. I called him and said, "If you cheat me out of this honoring moment, I'll never or speak to you again." Darling, do you blame him for wanting out? He's said time and time again that at that point in time, his fellow bandmates were not the same people he had known in the beginning. Drugs, booze, greed; the whole shebang. After not having really been around it since the early eighties when they recorded Mirage, I can only imagine how disconcerting the whole situation must have been. She has said that certain songs are about people she didn't even know when she wrote them.

One thing that irritates me about how Stevie speaks is her perceived central role in any event. Not only does she convey herself (whether consciously or unconsciously) as the central role, any regular situation becomes a dramatic succession of events worthy of wide-eyed, direct to camera "this is important and I was there" presentation.

I don't hate her but it irritates me to watch her speak more than any of Lindsey's repetitive answers. Quite the opposite, he likes to downplay a situation.

And Jason, yes it just comes down to Lindsey's chauvinistic ways. I think if I were around her enough I'd become a chauvinist, assuming I weren't already.

I think that is unfair and paints LB in too sympathetic a light than the facts suggest. But, if people want to think that he was a martyr to the band and that probably means mostly Stevie's sheer unbridled craziness - they can

Lindsey and Christine were the only sane ones back then, IMO. Stevie came across as cold and unbearable, Mick came across as an annoying and greedy coke fiend, and John...I have no opinion on, really. Obviously Lindsey was a bit more smart than the others if he chose to leave such a ****ty situation.

Remember her describing when Lindsey's father passed? I don't know how she managed but somehow it became about her and what she had to go through when she handed him the phone.

Knowing her, she probably wrote a song about it.

I remember the story - I do not remember it was about her at all - she was describing LB's grief and how hard it was to hand him the phone knowing he was going to go through that. But, make of that what you will - though it is a little silly and completely unsupported to say La Nicks made that all about herself  I think she cannot win for losing with you  And she wrote a song about that? If she did, she certainly had met Mr. buckingham  Thus, my question in response to your statement "She has said that certain songs are about people she didn't even know when she wrote them" - not Diss' response :wavey:

I'm sure there was still a lot of tension between those two at that time. It must have been hard for both of them. As far as who had a right to be mad or who had sour grapes, I see what happened during the Tango era a little differently. I remember reading things before and after Tango was released that made it clear to me Lindsey didn't really want to be involved in any of it. My impression was that he got involved out of loyalty to everyone else. Before anyone thinks they have to defend Stevie, I like Stevie, ok? I have to admit I don't understand why people think Stevie's the only one who ever displayed unselfish loyalty to Fleetwood Mac. Is it just because she juggled a few contributions on two Mac albums alongside her a solo career? True, she never left the band "officially" until after Lindsey did, but I don't compare what he contributes to the band in the same category. I don't think they asked him to do another album after 5 years layoff just to have him phone in some guitar parts and vocals.

Are there any other fans who remember likewise how this unfolded instead of from hindsight? It must be hard to understand for people who've become recent fans and might be blinded by Stevie's solo fame. Lest we forget, her working on Mirage was alongside the birth of her solo career. She was smart not to leave then, even with Bella Donna going to #1. Ever hear of the sophomore jinx? By the time Tango came about, hate to say it, but Stevie's solo career was waning. She was getting a lot of negative press about her obvious drug problems and she was starting to go downhill. Even though there was an attempt to get her back on track, Stevie was past her peak, imo. At that time, being with FM again was like a shot in the arm for her entire image. Her solo career was stalled including her songwriting. From everyone's admission her contributions to Tango were meager.

I don't know where I read or heard it, but when Tango was in the works, I remember Lindsey saying he didn't know how far he was going to go with his contributions. I remember talk of him not wanting to tour well before the legendary blow up and his alleged quitting. I also remember him saying he was fired. To this day, has he ever said he quit? I remember knowing he wanted the band to hold off touring. The fact that Rick and Billy were already waiting in the wings told me it didn't unfold as simply as it appears to people who read about it in hindsight. I feel like I'm out on a limb here. Am I the only one who remembers things happening this way?

I also remember Stevie giving a few smarmy interviews back then. In one she commented on Lindsey's uncertainty staying in Fleetwood Mac. I don't remember the exact question, but I distictly remember the attitude of her answer being antagonisitic. I don't remember her exact words but in one interview, maybe in our local paper, she said Lidnsey always threatens to quit the band. He does it all the time, like he was just blowing smoke. I felt she was almost daring him to leave. I know this kind of ungrateful attitude was displayed by others in the band after Lindsey reluctantly helped them put out that album. Why am I the only one who remembers this stuff?

To the tune of Edge of 17:

Just like I do sometimes, I answer the phone, ooh, ooh, ooh,
Just like I do sometimes, I answer the phone, ooh, ooh, ooh

And the phone did ring, like a bell in the night
In my home, I was writing, like I've always done.
Said to my friends, "Everyone, (the phone is ringing.)"
Nothing else mattered.

Lindsey was no more, than a young man then
Well, he didn't want to answer the phone
Something within him
But the moment, that I answered....the....telephone.
It was bad news, on the other side.

Chorus

Well, I did not want to tell him what the news was.
Yeah, yeah, it was horrible, his mom was really sad.
Well, I see that I can't give Lindsey the phone,
It would only make him really upset and sad...and angry....
But nothing else mattered.

Chorus

My ears never expected to hear...the phone
But strange things happen every single day
But the ring does not change
So, with the slow, aching ring of the phone
I went forth, with the receiver and gave it to Lindsey...on the other side of the phone....ooooohhhhhaaaaahhhhhhhhhh.....

Chorus

Then, suddenly, there was silence in the room
Yeah, yeah, then a flood of tears, everyone heard it all
I went searching for some kleenex
Up the stairs and down the hall
I heard the phone ring, and I did take the call...
It was bad news,
It was Lindsey's mom, Lindsey's mom, Lindsey's mom...

Chorus

Should he have agreed to tour if he didn't want to? No. But I doubt he signed any contract or else Mick would have gleefully sued his pants off. It was ****ty to leave them high and dry, but considering the situation, I don't begrudge him for it and I think he made a smart move.

IMO, this is a key point to the whole argument. Stevie and Mick fans can take this the wrong way, but I've always felt LB never told his side of what really happened and he believes he did nothing to deserve what ultimately went down with the others. To revisit that topic now would be calling out the others at this late stage, something I'm sure he won't do, so we'll never really know the whole story. If obligations were made without signed deals, that's not Lindsey's fault. The fact that the band wouldn't take no for an answer when he told them he didn't want to tour, yet never sued him for breach of contract makes me wonder about the band's version of how that whole thing played out. I agree with those who say Lindsey wasn't the only sane one. He was just as emotionally crippled as Stevie. However, I think the band cut her a lot more slack coming out of rehab. He was held to a different standard. When the fur started flying it was seen from a one-sided view, but not everyone is sticking by their stories of what happened then. Makes me wonder. Fair or not, I think the biased view on Stevie's fragile state played a role in how the band viewed his leaving. He was a quitter and an A-ho for leaving. Would it have been any different if he'd never started the project in the first place? Perhaps, so I fault him for that. He was just as mentally disfunctional as the others back then. I think he carried his baggage better in the eyes of some, but I always thought he was as looney as her Nibs.
Tie goes to the runner. :]

It's always been interesting to me how Stevie's story "changed" several years after Lindsey left. At first, she was bitter and proclaimed she was so relieved and happy to be rid of Linds and working with Rick and Billy. A couple of years later she started saying she "didn't want to be in the band anymore without Lindsey" and she "should have left when he did". I think Stevie took his leaving much harder than she would ever admit and was actually quite distraught by the whole thing. She always tried to portray herself as the "strong one", the one who could handle being around the new girlfriends, the one who didn't need him anymore, either emotionally or professionally. I guess she still does this to some extent although not nearly as much as she used to.

I think when Lindsey left Fleetwood Mac it had a deep impact on Stevie...much moreso than any of us probably realize.
All the ties were now broken...there was nothing chaining them together anymore. This period in Stevie's life has always fascinated me....the depths of despair she slipped into with the klonopin, the loss of her creativity, the loss of her ambition, the isolation, the way she changed physically, the lack of self esteem. She really spiralled downward after the 87 incident. (I know she was on her way down for a few years before that too). Something happened in 93 to wake her up...perhaps seeing Lindsey at the Clinton gig made her realize how low she had gotten.

As for the rest of it, I was distraught when he left in 87 but actually it really turned out to be the best thing. It made the Dance Reunion so much more significant. Without those years to grow and heal for Lindsey, who knows if they would be together now. I doubt it.

Well, I think they sort of had to say that in the beginning. I mean what were they supposed to say - LB left us high and dry and all we could find at the last minute was these two schlubs  Actually, they had all worked together before - so I think Stevie was being sincere by saying she enjoyed working with Billy and Rick, who are both very talented people. Interestingly, FM also went through another huge change at the time, which was the addition of an second percussionist, back up singers, and an IMO vastly more complex stage presentation from the lighting on down. Also, I do not think Stevie ever said she was "happy to be rod of Linds" I thought she always couched her feelings with a sense of regret but resilliance to move on. I think later she realized it was not the same for her without LB, etc. AND - as you say, in the end it worked out for the best.

I was not saying she actually said she was happy to be rid of Lindsey. I was thinking about certain comments that she made insinuating she was happier now, they could be a "real band again" and the one Mick made about Stevie being happier and more comfortable now without Lindsey around. My point was that even though she said she was fine with it, and yes, what else could they possibly have said at the time...I think she was anything but fine with it. I think it is possible that the entire incident played a part in Stevie's decline over the next six years. Overall, I think emotionally she was significantly affected when he left the band. (and for very different reasons than Mick, John, Christine, Rick and Billy were affected) Just my opinion though.
