View Full Version : What do you boycott and why?

As per the other KFC thread - I thought I'd ask if you all boycott places?
Which places and why?
I boycott McDonalds- well because it's crap :D
Also - KFC because I don't like it and because of the information I've learned about their treatment of chickens
-Krispy Kreme - because I like Dunkin' Doughnut's better - and I have a big pet peeve about places that spell words in their title incorrectly
I don't think I have an active boycott against any other places....

Oh yeah - BUT Dunkin' is more of a shortening of Dunking, so that's okay - and donut is an acceptable way to spell doughnut :D That's how I justify it

As per the other KFC thread - I thought I'd ask if you all boycott places?

I don't think I have ever boycotted a place. Strange but interesting question.
I do however, 'boycott' veal, i refuse to eat it. For some odd reason what i have heard about the horrible life/slaughter of the baby cows for veal disturbs me more more than the slaughter of any other animal. I don't know why this is, but that's me. yes, the KFC things does upset me, but as I hardly ever go there anyway, I guess don't see a need to boycott it.
The only other thing I can think that i 'boycott' is the boy scouts, for their whole discrimination policy. I don't think I'd let my son become a boy scout on these grounds (not that he wants to be one anyway.)

None.
I think that if you look somewhat deeply into any corp., you will see bad things  Thus, they are all bad to some degree - so why discrimminate  But, that is my line to draw and that is where I draw it  I do not begrudge other people for drawing it elsewhere
I do, however, write businesses letters when I think they do bad things that i see.

Yep, every company does dirty deeds, Jason, so, what's the point in boycotting all of them. But, if boycotting means not shopping there because they suck, then sure, I boycott.
I hate Wendys' food, I don't eat it, is that considered boycotting?

I dispise Wal#$%^&*Mart with a passion, So I rarely try to have to shop there (I will sit out in the car as Deb shops for what lil' WFM has that we need...Which is usually Cat Litter & Paper CD Sleeves). Only good thing about the location of the Norman Wal#$%^&*Mart is that Best Buy is now located on the premises...And I love BestBuy (Wider/Larger & Better selection of music & electronics, and best of all music that is not subject to CENSORSHIP which is a big thing for those fartheads from Ark-i-saw!!! )
I also boycott Krappy Kreme donuts, We tried 'em when a store opened in OKC and had the worse case of 'the trots' on record...F**k Krappy Kreme, F**k 'em in their stupid ass donut holes!
I also boycott those considered assholes, You can't shoot 'em/kill 'em since it is 'supposedly' against the law...But trust me, Make asshole hunting season legal and I will be the undisputed Grand World Champion!

Yeah - my reasons for boycotting certain places aren't political or deep - many are just selfish reasons....:D
I also hate Wal-Mart - sadly I still go there when I need cereal becaue they're the only ones in this town that sell the cereal I eat :(
But it's such a horrendous place - going there is definitely an exercise in anger management.

my hatred of Wal#$%&^Mart is due to their business practices with a company I was once employed with (Unarco Commercial Products of Wagoner, OK...Who manufactured ALL of the shopping carts at ALL of the Wal#$%&^Mart's worldwide).
What kind of company pays $5 for each shopping cart when total labor costs (Hourly labor, parts & material) around $45-$50 to manufacture each cart? And when the company who is manufacturing the carts tells Wal#$%&^Mart "That is not a physically possible deal in the business sense, We will lose $$$$ on this contract", What was Wal#$%&^Mart response? "We'll take our business to Mexico for even cheaper labor then..."

I have not bought French wine since 1995 - when I first heard about France's testing of nuclear weapons in the waters of the Mururoa Atoll in the South Pacific. They refused to stop despite global demands - and it's had environmental and atmospheric implications. France first started to do this in the 60s (before I was born).
I don't boycott WalMart because I don't really see the difference between WalMart and any other big grocery chain, or video chain (cough.. Blockbuster... cough), or coffee chain (Starbucks, Second Cup). They're all the same. To shop at Blockbuster, or Best Buy, but shun WalMart to me would be hypocritical.
What else? I boycott all fried fast food because of the health implications (but it's a personal one; to each his own). I don't lecture people who eat fries.
Can't think of anything else. The wine is my biggie.

Oh, and United Way. Also, Wilson's Leather, for obvious reasons. I dislike the Gap because of their prices and other things I've heard about them. I'm sure there's more.
Oh yeah - The Pittsburgh/Ohio grocery store chain, Giant Eagle. Disgusting prices. And this isn't technically boycotting, but I refuse to go to the ER at the hospital near where I live, because my appendix was on the verge of bursting, yet they still wouldn't see me. I've been seriously ill and I still refused to go. My mom almost pulled me to the car to go, but I refused, because of the way they treated me. Also, Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. My grandmother was in there for six months, and the lack of care she recieved there was partly responsible for her death. :distress:

Emergency rooms are the pits, but I go to them every time I have strep throat. I'm not patient enough or enough of a tough guy to schedule an appointment for later on and then wait longer for a prescription (the ONLY prescription I will ever accept because I never take prescription drugs). I need pain relief ASAP. And the Tylenol with codeine that they have at the ER is also helpful. :D

I boycott Nestle products, for their unethical marketing policy about the powdered baby milk, breaking a World Health Organisation Code on the marketing of breast milk substitutes.
This is what Nestle does (from: http://danny.oz.au/BFAG/ ):
# Nestlé and Wyeth (the other big producer of powdered baby milk) provide free milk to maternity hospitals in the Third World so that newborn babies are routinely bottle-fed.
# When newborn babies are given bottles, they are less able to suckle well. This makes breastfeeding failure likely. The baby is then dependent on artificial milk.
# When the mother and baby leave hospital, the milk is no longer free. At home parents are forced to buy more milk, which can cost 50% of the family income.
# Because the milk is so expensive the child is not fed enough. This leads to malnutrition.
# The water mixed with the formula is often contaminated. This leads to diarhhoea, malnutrition and often death. James Grant, Executive Officer of UNICEF, has said:
#Every day some 3,000 to 4,000 infants die because they are denied access to adequate breast milk.
# 1.5 million babies die every year from unsafe bottle feeding.
# Breast feeding is free and safe and protects against infection - but companies know that unless they get babies on the bottle, they don't do business.
Here there is a list of all Nestle products (I had to say goodbye to a lot of candy bars :( ):

The latest news on the boycott are here:

on Feb.7,2003 when I fractured my tibia I had to wait in pain to be admitted into the ER (At the hospital were my Deb works no less  )
Ah, Nuthin' like the extruciating pain of having to sit in a wheelchair and try not to black out from the shock of seeing your foot just danglin' like a kite in the wind (While turn 45 degrees to the extreme right) and then finding a new meaning of pain as your biting into a towel as the ER RN's somewhat pop my foot back into place as they put a splint on my foot/leg (And have the Dr. non-schalantly look at the X-Rays and say "Yep...It's broke"...Well "No **** Sherlock", The large SNAP of the bone sound made that somewhat obvious along with the fact my foot is dangling like a breast of some 90 yr old woman, And I didnt have to attend Med School for 8 years to tell ya that  )
Just dont get me started on IHS (Indian Health Services, Or as I call 'em Incompetent Health Services) and their world reknown incorrect diagnosis' that they finally correct...A week later!!! How sad it is that I am STILL feelin' that pain in my right hand from their f**k up!!!!

Is that part of a wider protest against the Catholic Church and its ideologies in general? Just curious, as I'd assume not every doctor in the place would be Catholic, and that at a time of life-saving need, a Catholic hospital might come in handy. But as one who also does not support many aspects of Catholicism (many many), I'm curious about this.

Yeah, I'm not sure about that. If I was in an accident and about to die and the nearest hospital was Catholic...I'm not sure if that's the "hill" I want to die on (no pun intended). But, I certainly wouldn't go for everyday medical treatment, whether all the doctors there were Catholic or not.

I don't shop at WalMart, because of their censorship policies and deplorable business practices both here and abroad... but also because I just plain hate their stores. There was always broken merchandise on the shelves and stuff all over the floor. I don't eat at KFC (or any fast food place besides Subway) to begin with... it's a habit I formed in the three years I was a vegetarian & I've never had any desire to start going back. I've seen one too many burger cooks scratching his balls on the job, anyway. Crotch flavor? No thanks. Other than that I don't really "boycott" anything, but given two options, I'll always make an effort to support the more progressive, ethical one.

Wal-Mart, just as most of you have said earlier. Too crowded and I just hate going.
K-Mart, never had an item ring up at the correct sale price.
Circuit City and Best Buy because they never seem to have what I want lately and the help at both stores is just clueless.

I boycott zoos, aquariums, and places like Marine World. I don't believe that wild animals should be kept confined. Although I recognise and respect the fact that many of these places have breeding programs in place for endangered species and many, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, also do rehabilitation and release of sick and injured wildlife, I cannot excuse what is essentially imprisonment of these beautiful creatures. Additionally, I am aware of the fact that most of these places are making strides to improve their facilities and provide environmental enrichment for the specimens on display, I've seen too often (and firsthand) the ill effects that captivity has on the animals -- from physical damages resulting from illness and injury, to psychological damages from confinement and boredom.
I would very much like to boycott chain pet stores such as Petco, but the fact of the matter is that I don't really have much choice in the matter. I am strongly opposed to their treatment of the animals they offer for sale and have often seen dead, sick, and injured animals in their displays. However, I don't have a choice in the matter. These super-stores have driven the privately owned pet stores out of business and the supplies I need for the animals in my care cannot be found in places like grocery stores or Walmart (who I would also like to boycott because of horrid conditions of the fish in their pet department). I have rats, a firebelly toad (which I acquired second hand), and hermit crabs (and yes I know that they are harvested from the wild and unable to breed in captivity, but I was not aware of that when I acquired them and have done my best to provide them with adequate nutrition and environmental conditions and thus far they are doing well). Unfortunately, the necessary food and supplies for these animals can only be acquired (in my area) either online (mostly through the websites of chain pet stores and I cannot afford the ridiculous shipping costs) or at Petco. A very bad case of catch 22.

Circuit City and Best Buy because they never seem to have what I want lately and the help at both stores is just clueless.
Any CD store at the mall. Overpriced and clueless help need I say more?
I make some at BestBuy mad cause I will just walk over to their computer and see if they have in what I am looking for on DVD/CD without asking for assistance...Some of those working at the Norman BestBuy store wouldnt know assistance if I "assisted" my foot into their asses and they called 9-1-1 ("Is a joke") for "Medical Assistance"
As for mall CD stores, Havent made a purchase in one since around 1993 (Ozzy Osbourne's "Live And Loud" set), But I did try once in May 2001 to purchase a new release by some "dead guy named Stevie Nicks" until I laughed myself out of the store at the clerks ignorance

PetsMart for pet supplies, been in PetCo once and browsed around, wont be goin' back.
We have adopted 2 of our cats ("Ace" & "Shioban/aka the Woodchuck") through two reliable local "no-kill" animal rescue shelter at PetsMart.
I wonder though, I betcha "Pets & People" (Great people who run one of the BEST 'no-kill' rescue shelters around) often wonder which igmos adopted "Ace"...Gee I wonder who "Ace" adopted too,

I went to Best Buy a month ago looking to get rid of my gift card. I was looking for 'Paint Shop Pro" The clerk proudly pulled out 'PRINT Shop' I had to tell him that it was NOT the same thing. DUH!
I was also looking for the Golden Girls DVD set to which the clerk told me that it was not out yet. Hmm, funny how there are some people who DID get it for Xmas.
As for Paint Shop Pro I ended up getting it that same night at Staples (Thanks to Dad who bought it up as a joke) and it was even on sale. The clerks were more then helpful, too. ;)

ive been on a year-long "boycott" of restaurants in general
ever since my mother almost died from the coiled wire stuck in her potato pancake...eating out has lost a lot of its appeal
making food at home is where it's at as one knows then what really happens in the kitchen...i find i dont miss it much at all, and it is healthier (no added salts/sugars to fake the tastebuds into foods' deliciousness - is that a word? :p )

prior to the boycott due to my mother's horrific incident...i had considered not patronizing restaurants due to a few other pearls of wisdom:
my hs boyfriend worked at a restaurant, and when he dropped a bisquit on the floor the owner told him to pick it up and place on the plate...and when there was bell pepper rotting in the refrig he was told to cut the rott off and serve...he quit that day.
my sister worked at kfc when she was in highschool...for the crispy chicken they would take the days leftovers of original recipe, redip in the batter, fry and sell the following day as crispy...umhummmm.

You should read (if you haven't already) Life of Pi. It has a very interesting take on zoos and animals in captivity that I fould fascinating - and it has since changed my opinion of them :) Not that I'm looking for you to change your opinion of zoos and such - I had just never known anything about them and such - and overall - regardless of the zoo thing - it's a totally fascinating book

My big boycott for the past few years has been California wines. That's more of a local thing, though - and especially for the last few years dumbf**** have been moving to my, and other, foothill towns to grow wine grapes which is extremely bad for the extroadinarily rich foothill ecosystem (deer fences are bad for deers, which are bad for mountain lions, which, etc, etc - it's all connected. In foothills the variation in elevation makes for an exceptionally varied ecosystem within a small space) and also these dumbasses move there, cut down the trees to grow grapes, which aren't good for the soil at all. Do we really need more high end wines? NO!
This is also close to my heart as these lame people (from the bay area) have built a house right next door to my parents house, cut all the trees in back, and planted grapes. And - my parents are now involved in litigation with them because they are disputing the property line of my parents tiny house, little workshed, and yard (my parents can't afford their lawyer, and he's a bad one at that) so that they can gain 10 more feet of property. They just built a big ol nice house, cut down the trees, and they're begrudging my parents their work shed! And my parent's property line has been in place for like, 60 years. Of course they have money, which buys justice, especially in my town!
Anyways, personal story blah, but...
A few years back i would not eat beef because of the heinous amount of resources/land it takes to grow beef - yes, McDonald's is cutting down the rainforest (which provides most of our air and an amazing diversity of species, not to mention plants with medicinal properties) for grazing land, so that we can eat hamburgers, which aren't even good for us. :)
Oh, and also - Albertsons, cause (I think) the Mormon church owns them. Carl's Jr. for their anti abortion stance/contributions i heard about awhile back.

This is exactly why the selling of dogs and cats in pet stores is illegal in my state (California). I remember there used to be a store in the mall that got shut down for several reasons, but partly because all the puppies it sold had parvo.

I sort of boycott these stores, but not really because I have a problem with them. Mostly I don't shop at these places because half of what I listen to they don't even carry anyways and their prices are outrageous. As for getting help there, I'm one of those antisocial people who'd rather spend hours trying to find something myself than deal with someone I don't know. That's the same reason why when I go to the bank I'll use the ATM even if there is no waiting at the counter.
But I digress. I do have to give some props to Best Buy though. Of all the cd retailers I've come across, they have the best selection and Best Buy is the ONLY store I've been in that actually carries all three of Lindsey Buckingham's solo albums. In fact, the only other store I've been in that had any of his work at all was Barnes and Noble, which had one copy of OOTC. Most of the music I buy comes from Amazon, Columbia House, Ebay or straight from the artists' websites. Where I live, if you're not a fan of bubble-gum crap like Britney Spears, you're SOL in terms of buying cds.

LOL - some comments in general and realted to the above:
1. My mother had a new knee put in last year and the ins. company would pay only at the Catholic Hospital, which was ironic since my father helped build the other big hospital in town. So, my mom is lying there on Demoral with her new knee just a few hours old and this lady walks in the room with a pic (sp.?) , which is used by a lay minister to administer the Host. My mother, a DEVOUT Epsicopalean (in the first part of the 1900's, the services were held in her great grandmother's living room then her family built the first real Church on their land and then essentially gave the land for the current Chruch  ) and looped on the pain meds, looks at this poor woman and says in an authoritative tone only an aging Southern Belle can muster "You are a Papist. You and your kind only allow Catholics to have the Body of Christ. I am not a Catholic - though I am a Christian and you ought to be ashamed of yourself because Christ made no such dinstinction - now please leave" then she turned on the t.v. and in that motion dismissed this woman. Well, needless to say this poor woman was horrified and ran out of the room essentially in tears. Ten minutes later the head nun of the convent running this hospital comes in the room and addresses my mother by her first name as they have known each other for YEARS and says "as long as you believe in Christ you can have the Host and I do not care WHAT the Pope says  Needless to say, after that, I had a cocktail and listened to "Battle of the Dragons"

Well I hate vegemite too. We're perfect. As I said, I do like the Marmite, so you can win the bread and then buy the Marmite and we'll have a perfect breakfast. Vegemite is kind of gross but I'm not sure if foreigners understand that with any of these mitey spreads, it's not like jam (wait, don't you call that jelly?) where you spread a lot on. The amount you spread is tiny, less than a layer of butter. Still, I can understand the dislike for vegemite.
Help me out here - what IS vegemite and marmite? I mean, I've heard of them, I know you spread it on bread for a sandwich - but what is it exactly? What does it taste like?

Americans grow up with the strangest things from our point of view. Peanut butter and jelly (I presume that's our jam but with less strawberries and more artificial ingredients)?
You got it! :D But what are the 'mites made of? Peanut butter is peanuts, oil (I don't even know if there's actually any butter in it.) Jelly is fruit, sugar and usually preservatives. What's in Vegemite & Marmite?

Yeast is the main ingredient. In America do you have the jam (jelly, whatever) with the huge chunks of strawberries, blackberry, apricot, or whatever the type happens to be? I tried some when I was there and it seemed like a sugar gel (crazy yanks and your sugar). Does 'jelly' cover both (assuming the former exists over there) or is that the jelly and jam the same as ours?
There's definitely a difference between jelly & jam. I don't eat much of either, but yes, we do have real jam with chunks of real fruit (of course, it's probably imported from the UK or something. :D )
Then we have "all natural" jelly, which supposedly has no preservatives, just fruit, water & I'm sure loads of sugar. And then the general "jelly" which I grew up with, which is the sugar gel you mentioned.
I hardly ever eat it at home, but if I go out to breakfast, then I'll put jelly on my toast.

I also boycott any place of business that gives me sh*tty service. Be careful at places like Jiffy Lube - they use power tools to remove the drain plug (which can sometimes strip it) - if they didn't ruin the plug by doing that, they toss it into a bowl of hundreds of other types of plugs - then they grab whatever to put back on your car. I just had my brakes worked on and my mechanic pointed that out to me. They also didn't replace the gasket - so, I've had a slow oil leak for the last 2000 miles or so.
Probably the closest thing we have to not being sickeningly sweet "jelly" is apple butter. It's just what it sounds like, and is not that sweet. :wavey:

Ya know, I was like that with cars. I would only buy an American made car, but after owning 4 American cars, I'll buy a Toyota next time. I've not had any luck with the American pieces of ****.
I recommend this. I have had very good luck with my Toyota. Prior to that I had a Ford Escort (do not touch with 10 foot pole), and prior to that a Plymouth Horizon which wasn't great but was better than the Ford. That one was a stick shift which I learned on. I used to "peel out" with that stupid 4 cylindar hatch back in high school cuz I could. It would make this obscene screech like it had some kind of power, too fun!!!!

Oh so you do have jam! Ok now the question is, why do people eat the vomit-inducing, sugary jelly stuff if you have the real jam?
Because it's cheap. You can get a giant jar for 99 cents. And, like Deanna said, it tastes awesome to kids. I don't eat it anymore either. I buy all natural jam. It is still very sweet, I wish we had less sweet options, I would love that! But I do enjoy the sweet jam. On whole grain bread, of course.
I won't buy jelly because it has high fructose corn syrup which is very cheap but not very easily used by your brain for energy. If it is put in an IV (the fructose that is) you cannot survive on it. It's not good and it is in softdrinks, cookies, everything. I don't buy any of that though. I also avoid trans fats, anything with hydrogenated oil in it I will not buy. This stuff is worse for you that butter.

I do the same thing- if I get sh**ty service somewhere - I call them on it and I don't return to the place...or I bitch to a manager or something...I've gotten many free meal/dessert or drink that way :D
The worst I encountered was sitting for 45 minutes without being helped. Finally we placed our orders and waited quite a while again. And this was a WORK lunch. We complained to the manager and he would do NOTHING. We were flabbergasted. Of course if it happened now I would probably just start hollering and get my way, they don't like people yelling, hehe. We just didn't leave a tip. That was the only time I 've walked out of a restaurant without leaving a tip, we all agreed none was warrented, and the guys I was eating with had been waiters!
I've had good luck at the Valvoline I go to (knock on wood).
The other time I had really bad service was when my car was in for repairs and they charged me for 12 hours of labor and they only had the car for 6 hours! They charge you by the "book". My Dad went down there and yelled at them and they gave me back about $200. :D You really can't let people get away with this bullsh*t, stand up for yourself. It used to be hard for me to do that but it isn't so hard anymore. I don't usually send my Dad in anymore.
Oh yeah, when I bought my car they put 2 new tires on. My Dad looked at the 2 old tires and told me he thought they were unacceptable. He called them up and told them he would take me straight down to the registry to see if it would pass inspection. I got my second pair of new tires. Yay Dad! His father died young so he never had anyone advocate for him and got ripped as a kid a few times, but no more! He loves helping with that stuff.

How in the world does one make toffee with Saltine crackers?
Lux, jelly is made from the juice of the fruit, plus sugar, and sometimes pectin. Whereas jam has the actual chunks of fruit.
Both can be all-natural (ie. just the fruit or fruit juice and sugar), and both can be evil and full of additives and preservatives and artificial colour and flavour.

I have only had a problem with Best Buy in the last few months. I did in fact buy my computer there last April. You know what? The Barnes and Noble in RI (right across from Best Buy) has OOTC, too.
Lately, I have been ordering at Amazon. I am going to Best Buy tomorrow to hopefully use my gift card to buy the Charmed DVD set. Let's see how I make out.

Line a baking sheet with the crackers, melt two cups of brown sugar and two sticks of butter together, then pour it onto the crackers. Bake it for ten minutes until it starts to bubble, let it chill, then dig in and allow your arteries to clog. :D

My sister doesn't and never has let my nephew eat crap - and as a result the kid hates junk food - especially chocolate
A lot of times the really crappy stuff (jelly) is cheap cheap cheap - and lately I've been looking at some store brands - they're very cheap but made with the worst possible things....

I think it had the opposite affect on me. I thought I didn't like it when I was little. I think it just scared me because it was supposed to be evil and something you get in trouble for eating. My mother took me to McDonald's once (I was forever to be reminded that she did however) and I nearly had a heart attack, not only because my arteries was not used to the bucket of grease in one cheeseburger, but I'd never been surrounded by such food before and the shock got to me. When I got older I became bitter about the fact that I always had raisins when other kids had chips. Cordial was out even. And then I started generating my own money and I was like a kid in a candy store, only I was in my late teens. I think it works in reverse because the kid will discover that food doesn't always taste like cardboard, beans and water, and then not want to go back. But there is a place in between my household and what I perceive to be an American household.
This is like my life story too. Almost literally - I think we went to mcdonald's once. :D And it was right by our house, I passed by it every day on my way to do grocery shopping. I was bitter about other kids fruit rolls and chips, too. I was like "nice CARROT mom, thanks! " However, also on the way to do grocery shopping everyday, I stole candybars from the store. Eventually I got caught at one store and got grounded for a month. But, of course, being American, i probably saw junk food everywhere i went, especially since i did the shopping. It's harder to resist, then. When my mom would get a candybar, she would say "you can have a bite when i'm done"

Most of the best food ever, comes from the Amish country around my area! Applebutter, fudge, homemade everything! And their restuarants are awesome, too. OH, PA, IN? MI Germans have been perfecting the art of artery-clogging (haha) for centuries.
My favorite jam was my Grandma's. She did all that stuff herself. I can taste it now....mmmm :woohoo:

I don't buy any snack food for my family. One, because it's crap. Two, because we're short on cash these days. Three, because those mega corporations don't need any more of my money. Four, because I can make reasonable facimilies of all that myself.
I buy no pre-packaged frozen type food. I pretty much shop the perimiter of the supermarket and make most things from scratch, even pancakes, which amazes most people I know to no end!
But I can see it in my daughter. She just had a birthday and when I gave her a piece of cake she had a couple of bites and left the rest. But I can hold broccolli over her head..."You're not going to get anymore broccolli if you're not good!" It's probably one of the best things I've done as a parent. :D

How else do you make pancakes but from scratch?
Most people I know buy a pre-made mix that you just add, I think, water and eggs to. I actually start with flour and add baking powder...like that...that's what I meant by "scratch".

Oh right. I think I'm just incredibly behind the times because I didn't realise people bought mixes although now that I think about it, nobody really cooks anymore so why would this be different? I guess that's because I've only ever eaten pancakes a few times but if I wanted to eat them it seems like a rather easy proceedure and hardly worth buying a mix.
That is essentially my opinion. I always have the ingredients around, so why buy the mix?
I am guilty of buying the pre-made Asian sauces and pasta sauces but I still live with my parents, I'm not supposed to give a crap about making that from scratch. I also can't cook so if I don't I'm just left with a dry stir fry and that's not entirely pleasant to swallow.
I make most pasta sauces from scratch, my big shortcut is starting with canned tomatoes. Cream and oil sauces I always make from scratch. Asian sauces I've tried but finding the ingredients can be a bitch. Next time I have a day to blow I gonna pack up the family and take a ride to Edgewater NJ right outside of NYC and go to this big Japanese supermarket (Mitsuwa?) and buy everything I need because Japanese cooking is my next challenge!
It's different once you have your own kitchen and you are solely responsible for its contents. And nearly everything I cook I cook from a cookbook! You follow the recipe and employ a little common sense and you're there! People act like I create these things out of the air, and I just say, "You follow the directions. It ain't that hard!"
Once you do that for a while you get comfortable with it and you can experiment a bit more. It ain't rocket science!

My ex-boyfriend made the yummiest pancakes and syrup from scratch....soooo good...I miss that - I've actually never tried to make pancakes from scratch...but someday I will :D
I do enjoy cooking -was never taught - but I'm learning as I go - and what I like is I'm cooking just for me so I usually have a lot left over - and I freeze the leftovers and keep some out for lunches...it's very fulfilling knowing my money is going to good meals and not to burgers, pizza and junk (which I love - but am trying to cut WAY down on...)

Yeah, I went to McD's once....
Like once a WEEK!
You guys are actually really lucky. If you're raised eating crap, you will continue to eat crap (and probably love it) unless you make a conscious effort to stop. At least in my case, anyway. I still eat fast food occasionally, but not nearly as much as I used to. And I really had to teach myself portion control, as my mom had no clue what that is.
And the mix thing? My mom's a good cook, but when I was about 10, she started using frozen meatballs, jarred sauces, instant mashed potatoes, etc. I had no clue what a "scratch cake" was cuz I had never seen anyone make a cake without a mix. She still insists that it's easier & faster, but now that I'm cooking, I agree that from scratch is better tasting and better for you & it usually does not take that much more time. JMO.
