Sharpton Joins With an Animal Rights Group in Calling for a Boycott of KFC
By MELANIE WARNER

he Rev. Al Sharpton will not eat at KFC and he doesn't think you should either.

Starting today, Mr. Sharpton is joining forces with the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to urge a boycott of KFC, which is owned by Yum Brands of Louisville, Ky. Mr. Sharpton and PETA want the fast food chain to require its chicken suppliers to put in place new standards for the treatment of the 750 million chickens they process for KFC every year in the United States. The rap mogul Russell Simmons is also joining the Sharpton campaign.

"If we give our money to KFC, we're paying for a life of misery for some of God's most helpless creatures," says Mr. Sharpton in an eight-minute video that will be shown outside KFC's around the country.

PETA has been waging a campaign against KFC for two years. The organization was eager to enlist Mr. Sharpton because KFC has many stores in largely black neighborhoods and in late 2003 KFC executives told investors they were making an increased effort to market to blacks.

Mr. Sharpton and PETA are demanding that KFC force its chicken suppliers, like Pilgrim's Pride and Perdue, to give chickens more room in factory barns and to make use of a process that puts birds to sleep with nitrogen before they are killed. They are also asking KFC to stop its suppliers from forcing such rapid, hormone-driven growth that the birds crumple under their own weight.

PETA said that unlike other companies, KFC has been largely unresponsive. "KFC has been by far the most stubborn corporation we have attempted to work with," said PETA's president, Ingrid Newkirk, in a written statement.

Yum Brands, which also own Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, declined to comment on PETA's demands and allegations. "PETA is an organization more interested in promoting vegetarianism than the truth," a spokesman, Jonathan Blum, said.

PETA recently won a concession from McDonald's, which said it would study the possibility of requiring American suppliers to use the process of so-called controlled-atmosphere killing.

Several years ago, in response to PETA's "Unhappy Meal" campaign, McDonald's, which buys one of every 20 eggs sold in America, agreed to buy eggs only from farms offering hens extra water, more wing room in their cages and fresh air.

PETA says it has chosen to shed light on the chicken industry in recent years because large chicken producers and sellers have made little movement toward more humane practices. "The chicken industry is way behind the beef and pork industries," said Dr. Temple Grandin, associate professor of animal science at Colorado State University and a member of Yum Brands' animal welfare advisory council. "They need to work on getting some of the same auditing systems in place."

Animal welfare specialists like Dr. Grandin agree with PETA that the short lives of chickens need to be improved. Dr. Grandin said that as many as 6 percent of birds suffer broken wings or legs when workers pack them into crates and onto trucks.

"A lot of workers aren't adequately trained," said Dr. Mohan Raj, a senior research fellow at the University of Bristol in Britain and a veterinarian who has studied chicken welfare practices in the United States.

Animal rights activists are hardly KFC's only problem. In recent years, the company has been the financial stepchild at Yum Brands. Last year KFC's same-store sales were down 2 percent; sales increased at Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

 ***In an addendum to the video, Sharpton added that he's still cool with pork rinds and chitlins.... ***

Are you insane? Do we torture and brutalize watermelons like we do living and breathing chickens?

And I doubt you've even watched the videos of what REALLY goes on in these chicken slaughterhouses.

For GOD sakes they are chickens not human beings. They are hear for well food...either eggs or meat. Like it or not, whatever...its a "brutal" honest fact. They are hear to provide food. Although I do support more sanitary ways of going about killing the chickens...sorry...but that DO have to be killed...in some form or another. There is so much untruth in that video it isn't even funny. The beak removal looks like old video. I don't think they do that anymore. If you notice, the video of the cramped chickens is taken from above with out a view of the whole house. Chickens will bunch up when you walk towards them. The birds will become crippled if they are not slaughtered befoe a certain point, but they are slaughered before they reach that point. They do not leave the dead bodies in with the live ones.

PETA's main goal is not to get everyone to ban KFC but to become vegitarians...period! Its been their goal since they were formed.

Gimme a break, your lips are brown by this point.

The torture and abuse perpetrated against chickens by KFC and their suppliers is incredibly well-documented. To dismiss any of it is not only idiotic, but signs of a truly delusional person. More than half of the footage that has been shot of these slaughterhouses have been hidden cameras, fully showing how treacherous and cruel these people are in their treatment of these poor animals. PETA never boycotted The Passion of the Christ, I don't know where you're getting you misinformation.

A controversial animal rights group recently staged a demonstration featuring a 10-foot-tall "Jesus" model in London at the opening of "The Passion of the Christ" movie, asking film maker and actor Mel Gibson to show "compassion" to animals.

A press release issued by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) read that the "Jesus" model would "rise above the crowd at the opening of ‘The Passion of the Christ' to protest the suffering of animals raised and killed for food on ranches like Mel Gibson's in Montana, and to encourage moviegoers to adopt a diet that is respectful of all God's creation."

Also part of the demonstration were "people holding signs reading, ‘For Christ's Sake—Go Veggie!,' ‘Blessed Are the Merciful' and ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill,' as well as activists handing out vegetarian starter kits and leaflets titled ‘Honoring All of God's Creation.'"

A request for comment to Gibson's Icon Productions was not immediately answered.

PETA has also used the same demonstration tactic across the United States at the premieres of "The Passion of the Christ" in San Francisco, Seattle and Washington.

Apparently comparing the suffering experienced by Jesus in His final moments of agony to the suffering endured by animals, the release read that "‘The Passion of the Christ' focuses on Jesus' suffering in the final hours of his life. PETA wants everyone who eats meat to consider that suffering is an everyday reality for cows and other animals on farms and feedlots and, ultimately, in abattoirs. Cows are routinely dehorned and males are castrated without pain relief, deprived of their young and treated as commodities. As whistle blowers and veterinarian inspectors have attested, abattoir workers often resort to scalding, skinning and dismembering fully conscious animals in order to keep production lines moving."

In an e-mail interview, PETA spokesman William Rivas-Rivas said that PETA is neither trying to insult Christians with its message or be in any way blasphemous.

He said, "PETA is demonstrating because we want people to know that eating meat promotes gratuitous cruelty and suffering. We're asking people who oppose violence and injustice to extend their compassion to all God's creatures by adopting a vegetarian diet. More than 25 billion animals are killed for food every year in the United States. Pigs, cows, and chickens are individuals with feelings—they can feel love, happiness, loneliness, and fear, just as dogs, cats, and people do."

Rivas-Rivas added, "What is unsettling is that Christians, who follow the prince of peace, would support cruelty to animals every time they sit down to eat. There is nothing disrespectful about calling people to be more compassionate and merciful. This is Jesus' message. What is disrespectful and heretical is the way God's creatures are treated on factory farms and in slaughterhouses."

Every time Christians sit down to eat they have a choice, Rivas-Rivas said.

"(They can) add to the level of violence, misery, and death in the world, or to attempt to live peacefully with all God's creation. Everyone, especially people of faith should show mercy to the most weak, powerless and vulnerable among us—animals. We believe that Christians should reject all cruelty and violence and go vegetarian," he said.

According to Rivas-Rivas, "The meat industry today treats God's creatures like dirt, rather than God's beloved animals. The meat industries never allow these animals to do anything that is natural to them—they are never able to feel the grass beneath their feet, the sun on their faces, or fresh air. They endure mutilation—chicks have their beaks burned off, cows and pigs are castrated without anesthesia, cows are dehorned and branded, and the list goes on—all without any painkillers. To subject animals to such cruelty, simply for a palate preference, makes a mockery of God by showing such complete contempt for his creatures."

You just said something along the lines of "they're chickens, not human beings!". That would imply that their treatment isn't required to be above certain standards. You keep inferring that we don't realise they will be slaughtered. Of course we know that, I'm well aware that my meat is in fact dead. Simply because they're going to be slaughtered doesn't mean it's ridiculous to request that they be subjected to a certain level of treatment.

and I agree. If the statements in the video DO happen to be 100% true, then I agree...steps should be made to make it more respectful to the chickens and sanitary.

AT the movie - not they're protesting THE movie.....seriously - go back to school....wait - you're still in school aren't you?

I'm in college.

Ok then why are they protesting at this movie then? Buy protesting against Mel Gibson they in turn protest against the movie...do they not. Do they support people going to see the movie? Would grand ol' PETA support that?

I'm here... but I'm still trying to figure out exactly what to say to you regarding your racist and extremely offense "humour" regarding chitlins, pork rinds and watermelon.
Mr. Sharpton's ethnicity should have absolutely no bearing in this discussion whatsoever, and I'd suggest that your use of such offensive stereotypes damaged any credibility your argument may have had from the outset.

I will, however, ask that EVERYONE on all sides of the debate, refrain from making it personal.

I had Taco Bell once (we don't have them here, well even if we did that one time would still stand) and ended up in hospital. Not straight away mind you, after a few days the screams of agony drove my mother to *compassion*. A person can only regurgitate so many times before they start choking on their stomach lining.

Taco Hell is heinous - it's a sad horrible excuse for "Mexican food" - I've eaten there once in my life and that was one times too many

No, this has nothing to do with grammatical errors. What I meant is that the point you were attempting to prove made no sense.

Do you think they just magically appear in the box all nice, cooked, and brown?

Ding! Yes, they are chickens. But that does not mean that they are not living things. They may be here for food, but does that mean that they have to be tortured and mutilated before they're killed? That's some ****ed up logic.

PETA's main goal is not to get everyone to ban KFC but to become vegitarians...period! Its been their goal since they were formed.

Uh... no. From PETA's website-

Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.

Yes, they do make the point that they're not pro-meat. But look at the rest of what they said; They're not saying "BECOME A VEGITARIAN!)$*!@)$*!1!!", they're saying that animals deserve humane treatment and respect. You have no idea what they're about.

You can think whatever the hell you want to think, but research before implying this kind of stuff.

He was merely appealing to the sensibilities of "his people." Anytime someone is trying to gain support for their causes, they always appeal to their own community first.

There IS a difference, and, frankly, I think it's a little scary that you can't see the difference.

What is wrong with using the exposure of a popular contributor to the hypocrisy that it is their cause to rectify, in an effort to promote the issue? Their cause should not need to employ such tactics, it should be at or near the forefront regardless but alas, it is not. And so they resort to using the exposure of those popular ones who commit the cruel hypocrisy.

Ok, let's focus on that then.
You feel that animals deserve respect... good.

That's how PETA feels too.

While the organization believes that, in the best of all possible worlds, animals should not be eaten, PETA understands that people have been eating meat since Cavemen walked this Earth, and that that fact isn't going to change anytime soon.

So, to that end, they concentrate their efforts on making sure these animals are, at the very least, treated humanely, and they work to enlighten people to the fact that animals ARE living creatures ("God's creatures," if you will) and deserve to not be raised in deplorable conditions and killed violently and painfully.

If you truly believe that animals deserve respect, then I'd think you would appreciate what PETA is trying to accomplish.

But if we're going to start citing the original Hebrew, then I can remind you that the original Hebrew had NOTHING condemning homosexuality. ;)

Either way, the whole crux of the New Testament is that we are not God and that it is not OUR place to judge someone.
This includes deciding whether or not they deserve to live.

Conservatives and religious groups rail against stem-cell research and cloning because it's "playing God," but the fact of the matter remains that taking someone's life (even if they're a convicted murderer) is ALSO "playing God."
By doing so, YOU are deciding that a person should no longer live -- while the Bible teaches that that is GOD'S decision and God's decision alone.

No I'm not - because not everyone believes that a fetus is an actual human being - some people argue that a fetus is a person at a certain point in gestation - but at the very beginning - that all a matter of opinion...

If you believe that a fetus is a person - then abortion is murder and that is that.

If you do not - then abortion is not murder but a medical procedure. And medical science has not stated matter of fact that a young fetus is a fully-functional and thinking human being - so don't even try that defense...what you believe is not what everyone believes - and no one person's or group of people's belief should be forced upon those who do not believe it...

That is the problem and why no one will ever agree on the abortion issue...

OK I'm probably without question the biggest supporter of the death penalty here. How can you watch footage of that Oklahoma City Bombing and not be thrilled that Timothy McVieh got the death penalty. How can you call America retarded for severly punishing almost inhuman criminals. I belive we should use bear pits and have the worst offenders torn apart painfully by hungry grizzly bears.

Have you ever been to a prison. I recently went to one (not as a prisoner  ) and it might possibly be worse then death. I actually think it's better then the death penalty, but the only reason I still support the DP so much is how could you live with some murderer with a life sentence getting out on great behavior or something. And plus the DP is much more gratifying for the poor victums who should be thought about no the criminals.

That was meant to me a sarcastic remark.

Case and point. Prisoners are not being treated like people convicted of crimes. In most cases they are treated better than you/me and others free on the streets. I have often read of cases where people get arrested on purpose just so they can go to jail, because they know there they will be "taken care of."

I was suspecting that some kinds of people who like to torture/kill animals (which, by the way, is one of the personality traits of a serial killer) might work at these places. I don't know if I can watch that footage, without my heart being torn from my chest and shriveling into a dried corpse, but - I appreciate the info. God, that is so fricking sick...

Life imprisonment is actually a bigger deterent of crime than the death penalty

I'm not so sure about that. Many people argue against the deterrance factor for the death penalty because so many people commit crimes "in the heat of the moment." This would hold true for life imprisonment as well, wouldn't it?

lol. It's nothing like that. Honestly, it's because I had two unexcused absences, and they all sent someone over to take me to court about it, etc. Totally crazy, LONG story. It's fine now, though.
Whoa! 2?! that's so lame, they used to just call our parents when we had unexcused absenses, or give us detention or something.
God, I remember that beautiful day my senior year, when my best friend turned 18 (Feb.27th, to be exact) and she could write her own notes! :woohoo: :] Then it was just up to me to forge mine, luckily i'm a good forger... :)
Anyway, that sounds really, really, lame, but i'm glad it wasn't something more serious.

Ok well call me what you want...but you know what abortion is and you know what you support BY supporting abortion I don't even need to say it. So call me any name you want, I refuse to get angry anymore at some folks that I don't even know who post on this board.

Every person here defines right and wrong, just and unjust differently. Different people have different reasons to believe what they do and just because they don't share the same reasons you have for believing or not believing in something doesn't make them wrong. Just because you perceive something as wrong doesn't mean that somebody else does, nor should they because that's not how they see it. Everybody perceives their world and their reality differently from the next person. Taking it personally and calling them on the differences between their reality and yours just increases the amount of emotional poison in the world and that doesn't do anyone any good. Agree to disagree and move on because these kinds of arguments are anything but constructive and nothing good comes from them.

And btw...I have every right to acuse you of anything I want...just as you have the right to say "F*ck you" ;)

Not if you can't back it up with something. The heart of debate is in objectivity and proof. If you're going to accuse somebody of something, be prepared to back it up. And please don't make it personal. Attack the issues, not the person.

As a vegetarian (yeah I know I'll get picked on) I wouldn't eat in those places anyway (or Burger King or McDonalds). In fact I don't think I've even had KFC.

I have a HUGE amount of respect for vegetarians. I wish I was strong enough, will-power wise, to do it... but I'm a die-hard meat eater. :o

BUT there is absolutely NO reason why chickens, cows, etc., cannot be put down humanely. It is absolutely uncalled for, for them to be so brutally butchered.

No that's okay ;)

And good point on the deterent factor - it's true that the heat of the moment defensive would also apply to life imprisonment.

I was going on some local data - there's a push to re-instate the death penalty in New York State. Well - there's another program going on right now called Project Impact -it's basically a zero-tolerance program that targets not only the person committing a crime- but if they're part of a group or gang - law officials go after ALL those people...

The murder rate fell by 40% the first year of project Impact (ROchester's murder rate was higher than NYC's per capita) - the numbers were staggering when they compared murder rates when the death penalty was legal and when it was not - when there was no death penalty murder rates were much lower...

I'm still doing some research to find possible linkages etc...there may not be any - but it is an interesting corealtion...

This is the post I deleted because of its repetitiveness, but I'll put it back up so Deanna knows she's not losing her mind, lol.

-------

Actually, the commandment in the original Hebrew is "Thou shalt not murder.

""kill" in English is an all-encompassing verb that covers the taking of life in all forms and for all classes of victims. That kind of generalization is expressed in Hebrew through the verb "harag." However, the verb that appears in the Torah's prohibition is a completely different one, " ratsah" which, it would seem, should be rendered "murder." This root refers only to criminal acts of killing."

http://www.ucalgary.ca/~elsegal/Shokel/001102_ThouShaltNotMurder.html

----

While morally some people classify the death penalty as murder, since it is not a criminal act to put a person to death, it does not fall into the category given by the word "ratsah." It's fine to be against the death penalty, but it's inaccurate to use this commandment as support for your stance.

I'm not sure you wanted to get into a discussion of Buddhist ethics, but against my better judgment, here goes:

All killing, and probably even doing anything that allows or promotes killing, creates negative karma. In Buddhism, we don't make excuses. Sometimes, killing might be unavoidable, or it might be the only appropriate response to a situation, but it's still a non-virtue, according to Buddhist teaching.

I didn't CALL HER THAT. Those words didn't come out of my mouth. I just said that since abortion is murder. Then that statement isn't a stretch. I'm sorry, but her getting angry maybe has something to do with the fact that she knows that abortion stops a beating heart, and she knows I'm right in saying that those who support abortion might as well call themselves "baby killers." Killing in death penalty...punishment must fit crime.

Killing in war...not pretty, but it's war...death comes with war. I don't like it but sometimes it's important to look for the great good. Innocent people do die and it's sad. I wish that it didn't happen...but in war sometimes those things do happen...it doesn't make it right, but it doesn't change the fact that it happens.

I support the war, because I support what we are fighting for, liberty and freedom for Iraq. But I DO NOT support the killing of Iraqui children. But when you say you support abortion, you are supporting women to be able to murder their child at their will, it being THEIR choice.
