THE JACKIE FACTORY NYC PRESENTS
NIGHT OF A THOUSAND STEVIES 15:
"GOLD DUST WOMEN"
FRIDAY MAY 6, 2005
THE KNITTING FACTORY
74 LEONARD STREET NYC
DOORS OPEN 9 PM - 4 AM
www.mothernyc.com/stevie
Greetings from the frozen city to all of our beloved Gypsies, and all who have joined our newsletter since last Fall. We are overjoyed to announce the date for our fifteenth annual NIGHT OF A THOUSAND STEVIES. This milestone show will be held on Friday, May 6 at the legendary NYC performance club THE KNITTING FACTORY, scene of last year's NOTS. The larger capacity and seasoned staff of "The Knit" made NOTS 14 a pleasure, and we are happy to be back again for a second year. We promise multiple rooms and floors for your twirling pleasure, including a Stevie-themed lounge, an intimate stage, and balcony viewing of the Main Stage.
This year's theme is "GOLD DUST WOMEN", an homage to everything Golden and Stevie. The stage, room decor and signature "throws" will be be awash in gold - think gold tambourines, gold lace, gold glitter, and of course golden shawls! The golden songs - from the iconic title track to "Gold and Braid" - will all be heard, and worshipped. Golden Girl LIZZIE DAVIS will return from Flower Mound, Texas to open the show, and so many of our most Enchanted performers will be back for this very special edition. We will have first news of the lineup in our next email, or visit the ENCHANTED GYPSIES forum on THE MOTHERBOARDS.
We are expecting a record number of returning Stevie Legends to grace the stage this year, but still want to provide the platform for debuts as magical as last year's STEVIE NICKS EXPERIENCE, fresh from Des Moines, Iowa. If you are a new performer who has already written to us since last year's show, you don't need to do anything - you will be receiving email with instructions in the next few days. If you haven't yet contacted us, please visit our website AFTER FEBRUARY 1 for details at www.mothernyc.com/stevie and then get in touch.
Tickets $15 (plus Box Office charges)
Box Office is Open
Tickets online at www.knittingfactory.com
By phone at 212 219-3132, extension 3
Walk-in sales at The Knitting Factory Box Office 10 AM - latenight
Night of a Thousand Stevies is probably the best-known Stevie Nicks fan event in the world, a riot of shawls, lace, baby's breath, twirling, tambourines and great performance. This event began at JACKIE 60 fifteen years ago with four performers, and has grown into a true spectacle, featuring countless interpretations over a marathon night. As always, this Enchanted evening will climax in a twirl of shawls and tambourines with the Battle of a Thousand Stevies near morning.
Dress: Like a White Winged Dove and Golden: Gold dust and Gold glitter, customized gold-trimmed tambourines, Enchanted Eveningwear, blond and gold, oversized handkerchief hems, metallic gold shawls, gold Victoriana, ruched boot covers, mustard velvet, antique gold fringe, wizard and fairywear and of course Gold and Braid. Total Stevie Realness (All Periods).
As we prepare for a truly magical night, we are humbled by the very special joy and tremendous support that you bring to NOTS every year. We'll be writing again very soon with updated performer and DJ information. Special love to all of our friends from the Stevie websites and other online outposts for the Gypsies That Remain. Forward and post freely, and we look forward to twirling in the gold dust with you on May 6.
And The Love Remains -

Seriously, if anyone is thinking of going, all the validation you need is that Chi Chi is producing it. Her parties at Mother with Click and Drag are f*cking phenomenal.

And why isn't there a similar event on the west coast? Or is there and I'm just unaware...???

Beats me. I've only been to shows like that up here and in New York; anyone who hasn't gone to them is surely missing out. It's worth going to those parties just for the clothes alone. Late summer is the best time for them, too, IMO. Wigstock, Click+Drag, you name it.

I'm not sure if it is still happening but 2 or 3 years ago I went from Seattle to SAN Fran for The Wild Heart Affair, which was held in some hard to find old downtown hotel ballroom-not swanky, but not totally seedy. I beleive the event was on May 26 (or maybe a day before or after). I was in San Fran visiting a friend who's birthday we discovered was the same as Stevies', so at my insistence we went to check it out. I was trying to make converts of my two friends who went-one was successful, one was on the fence. Unfortunately this event creeped them out and turned them both off. They compared it to a Trekky convention and found the whole thing extremely laughable.
I was mostly oggling all the raffle prizes and door prizes (lot's of great memorabilia) and loved the kitsch factor, as well as a few good costumes & performances (as well as loads of bad ones!), but I beleive these events really are not for the casual fan as my hidden agenda (...furthering the promotion of Stevie Nicks/ Fleetwood Mac into the collective consciousness of the N. American psyche...)sort of back fired. Hey, I tried!
All that aside, I am sure NOTS turns up the volume on the good the bad and all points in between. So my advice: go if you can (to any of these events), but in the future I would probably have more fun going with a person or group arranged on The Ledge or some such place than my regular friends. This way I wouldn't be rushed to leave or forced to explain Stevie-mania in the hearts of the few and proud. Also, it would provide an opportunity to make new friends for future events, and not provide my friends with one more reason to justify their Stevie-shaming! (Foolish mortals!) ;) Ricoh

All it was was a bunch of people watching live performers dressed as La Nicks do her songs. There were other rooms of the place as well that did not really include the stage show - but would could still see it if you looked. It was a blast and I went with non-fanatics who laughed and thought it was a blast.

The Wild Heart Affair was put together by Daniel (SpyNote on the board). I went in 2001 (which I think was the one shown on VH1's Fan Club) and 2002. Last I checked there hasn't been any since then...

Oh, if anyone is in the NY area the NOTS please do go! Any Stevie fan will be enchanted and entranced....the sheer spectacle of it all. It's really a once-in-a-lifetime thing, you can't miss it!!!!
Now, being this is NYC, it can get a little far-out. For example, many of the performers (ok, maybe MOST of the performers) are either well-known trannies from NY's party scene or else absolute gay FAN-atics who maybe don't have the look down pat but are still twirling and spinning with wild abandon. A bunch of talented real gals also take the stage too. One of my favorite ones was a short guy from I think California, who had the 'Dance ' look down solid. The hair was parted perfectly and the dress could have been one of Stevie's own. It can get crowded. Thank goodness smokling cigrettes is now banned in NYC, it will make the evening a bit more pleasant for the non-smokers as it used to get smoky. The drinks aren't cheap, the bathrooms get funky and I've seen drugs (crystal and E mostly). The music mix is always incredible, deep album cuts, the big hits and little-known b-sides and rarities. It's an absolute HOOT to hear something like 'Sable and Blonde' on a nightclub's sound system and seeing a dancefloor of people twirling and dancing to it! The MC is a gnarled old queen as I recall, and he'd sort of stand there saying "twirl Stevie TWIRL!" while the music plays and the girls from 'House of Domination' do Lesbo-simulated sex and bondage on stage
I'll be there again, for sure. I've gone about 3 times now, and I live in NYC too so we can all meet or something. See you all then!!! :blob2:

I'm not a big fan of The Knitting Factory, they should have decided to have it at Mother. It's a bit too small, but the vibe would be better.

When we took our trip to Bulgaria in 98, we rented a car to & from NYC to fly out of JFK. NEVER again! The way there we got lost, then had to take a detour to the airport & got screamed at by a cop cuz we had no clue where to go.
The way back was worse - after 10 hour flight, my dad tried to rent the car & they told him his insurance was cancelled. Turned out to be a mistake, but I had to rent, therefore drive, the stupid car out of NYC....
In June.
On a Friday.
At 4:45pm.
OMG, I literally cried, my dad's yelling at me (he got sick while we were away, so that made things even worse) people were cutting me off, my brother was backseat driving. OMG.
OK, now that I've remembered all that, never mind that I even mentioned driving, it may have been the dumbest thing I've ever said. :sorry:
So I will look into the train, or perhaps staying with my cousin in Jersey & taking the train into NYC that way (they say they do it often, but I've never done it - is that really feasible? Or should I find an alternate plan?)

Yeah - that is why I'll never drive in NYC...
JEtBlue has some pretty reasonable rates - they're probably really good out of Buffalo....out of Rochester it's only like $45 right now :D

I've got another free SW round trip to burn, that's why I was asking you about flying into Long Island. :p I'm seriously considering it. A lot may depend on how much of a raise I get (which I should have already known about by Jan. 1st - stupid attorneys). ;)

I would be most grateful if a Ledgie would meet me beforehand though as I may wig a bit walking into such an event by myself. Here's a question : Does this thing sell out ? I may not be able to commit until later, with my unpredictable work schedule. But I would be bitter if I showed up and it was sold out.
It would be a tremendous hoot, even if only two or three of us showed up. We would have a blast. No drag for Sparky though. Probably have to just wear the standard wife beater and levis's outfit. Perhaps I could be talked into a scarf or something after a few shots of tequila. :woohoo:

That's what i was thinking, I'm just gonna buy the ticket - and I "bought" a Credit Card today for that very purpose! Well, and to buy the plane ticket.
And thank you, Towie - Gosh, i sure hope you go. OOOOO! I could finally wear a see through tube dress and carry a baton with no repercussions!
I was reading on the site for it, and the dress/theme this year is Goldust Woman, so lots of gold...
Anyway, If a bunch of us go, and, say, we're all together beforehand (for some sort of food, party, cocktailish reason) then that would make cabs and such more affordable, and we'd all go in pretty much together. :p Also, I was thinking, if any ledgies are going to stay overnight (how could you not? Their are many places to stay in Manhattan. I find an inexpensive yet clean and realtively nice place is http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d217630-Reviews-414_Inn-New_York_City_New_York.html - they have rooms for about !80 a night plus taxes, etc. This area of town is a whole lottta fun in that you are two or so blocks from Times Square and one block from rest. row. The inn is two old brownstones. Anyway - food for thought!!!!!

I know how to do NYC on the cheap. After all, that is the story of my life.
Anyway, as far as cheap places to stay, you should check out some of these places that typically are not affiliated with the major travel websites:
http://ny.budgethotels.com
Also, one of my personal faves is the Washington Square Hotel, which is in the heart of Greenwich Village: http://www.washingtonsquarehotel.com . And for $120 a night, you can't beat the Hotel Pennsylvania (via Expedia.com). It's right across the street from Penn Station, so you'll get to any part of town pretty quickly. And I hear the La Quinta Inn on 35th St. is pretty decent and cheap.
As for searching for airfare, always plug in "NYC" for the airport code; this searches across the three major airports (LaGuardia, JFK and Newark). My fave is LaGuardia because it's a tiny airport and you can take a bus into town for $2. Granted, the bus takes you into Harlem , but you can easily get off and take one of the many subways downtown from 125th St. Just pack lightly- chiffon doesn't weight that much, I don't think. In any case, cabs will be costly- anywhere from $40-$60 plus tips and tolls. Costwise, all of the airports are comparable, except there are fewer direct flights into LaGuardia. Getting to the city from Newark cheaply is a bit of a challenge logistically, but it can be done- taking the Airport shuttle for $6 (?) to Newark Penn Station (not to be confused with New York Penn Station!) and then hopping on the PATH train to 33rd St. for $1.50. JFK is simply a pain in the arse. But you can take the Q10 bus to the E train or take the airport shuttle to the subway. In either case, it's going to be a 2-hour saga!
Not sure if I am going... I am at the age where I just want to go to sleep on Friday nights! But if there is a real Ledgie gathering afoot, I'm there!

Yes, Newark is a viable option for NY arrivals. You just need to make an arrangement to get to NYC though. Probably 35 minute drive, with no traffic. 2,619,876 hours if there IS traffic :-)
More to my liking is JOhn F Kennedy International Airport. From there, after touchdown, you take the new 'Airtrain' to Jamaica train station. From there, you hop on the "E" train and you are there in 30 minutes.

Newark is fine to fly into for a trip to the City. Once you land it is about a thirty minute drive or so..without traffic. They have shuttles etc for certain hotels. JFK is another option and it is also about a thirty minute trip without traffic. I recommend seeing which airport has the cheapest flights......I live in South Jersey and sometimes drive up to Newark to fly instead of leaving from Philly as it is cheaper. You guys should stay at the Stevie Room in the Waldorf! Now that would be cool.

The only bridge from NJ to NYC is the George Washington Bridge, where you will probably die and fully decompose by the time you get through the tolls! And then you have to take the West Side Highway ten miles downtown. Trust Mama on this one- fly into LaGuardia if you can. It's the closest to NYC and the smallest, so you don't have a gazillion terminals to get confused by. But if you do fly into Newark, take an airport shuttle bus to Newark Penn Station, hop onto the PATH train, get out at the Exchange Place station, take the escalator out and then make a left outside of the station towards the river. About a thousand feet away is the ferry terminal bound for either W. 38th St. or Pier 11 (World Trade Center). It's $4 for the ferry, but the view is mahvelous... try http://www.panynj.com and http://www.nywaterway.com for more info. And if you're really feeling nautical- http://www.nywatertaxi.com .
By the way, I live in the West Village... and yes, your friend is right- it's probably the funnest place to hang out. How about pre-party drinks at the Cowgirl Hall of Fame??

I have to second this one!!!!!!!!!!!!
LaGuardia (LGA) is WELL worth any increase in ticket cost. A cab from LGA to Midtown is like $30 or so and takes on average about 20 minutes. LGA also has buses and shuttles for less. Note: if you must, JFK and Newark have trains that connect them, but it is a schelp and a half to get to and from them and a taxi will be well over $50 or so.
Here are sites to all of the airports:

Oh, right - Harlem. Anyway, I'd wanted to fly into Newark - but the flights into JFK are the cheapest, so far. Now I know why. But I found a hotel thats about .3 miles from where NOTS is gonna be, and near Greenwich. So that's good. I think I just really wanted to take the ferry from Newark. We'll see, though, I will save myself about 75 bucks on the flight by coming into JFK - The La Guardia flights were a little more expensive, too.

I guess it just depends on how much time and aggravation are worth to each person and, of course, the necessity of each situation. If the flight to JFK is WAY cheaper ($100 or more) - JFK has a link that connects to the subway system, which makes the ride to and from JFK less than five or so dollars. But, it takes over an hour each way, you will probably have to change trains once or twice once you reach Manhattan, etc. - but it def. is doable and saves additional money  In fact, LGA has a bus that links you to the subway system as well. The links on those sites explain it far better than I can
I have never taken the ferry from Jersey. It sounds nice though!!!!!!!

Hmm...just got an email from my cousin's wife. I now have a place to stay, and she says they take the train into NYC all the time, it's easy, cheap & quick. I'll have to continue my research on this one.
I've gone over 2 hurdles - took a long weekend off from work & told hubby about it. He didn't seem to be all that upset (don't know if that's good or bad, lol!) So barring any tragedies, I'll be there.
Amber, I may be interested in your hotel room if the cousin/NJ plans don't seem feasible.

I had dinner on Saturday Night in TriBeCa and I happened to walk by the Cosmopolitan Hotel on West Broadway: http://www.cosmohotel.com/info/index.html. It's cute, a bit basic, but only six blocks from the Knitting Factory. Right next to the 1,2,3,9 subway too! And a few blocks from the PATH train to Newark. The rack rate is $129 for 1 double, $159 for two doubles, but I found some $115 loft rooms here:
http://www.hotelconxions.com/default.aspx?tabid=58&chind=5/13/2005&choutd=5/15/2005&rooms=1&adults=2&child=0&dest=New%20York&hname=Cosmopolitan%20Hotel&ame=&rating=0
It looks like a Ma-n-Pa type of place, so perhaps they would be negotiable for renting out a block of discounted rooms. Perhaps it can become the unofficial "Hotel of a Thousand Stevies."

Paula, Deanna, - yeah, about the hotel room. I'm gonna want to share w/someone, so :) But also I was thinking, maybe even if people have someone to stay with, they might not necessarily want to stay with them the night of 1000 stevies. I was thinking I could go to their place, leave my car, get ready there & take the train into NYC, meet you guys out before NOTS, party it up at the big gala & crash with someone. Then trudge back to Dover the next morning & spend time with my cuz (who is adopting a 5 year old AIDS orphan from Ethiopia right around that time, so I am excited to meet him!)
The only issue may be if anyone goes with me (either Theresa - bikerchic- or my friend Ryan. Or both  ) Not sure what I'd do about room/transportation/etc. Hey, maybe Curtis can room with Ry... ;)

NYC trains run 24/7 as far as I know. Boston is waaay behind the times on that one. AND, they want to stop the night owl bus service! They have busses that run when the T closes, from 12:30 to 2:30 and the local authorities want to ditch it. WTF??

Do you know of a bus? It isn't glamorous but it is economical. And the station is in the middle of everything with a cab stand right outside. Also, the cabs all have maps on the back of the front seat so you can see where you are/where you're going. It definitely gives a bit of peace of mind at least.

Just a note - a cab from the venue to, say, the Times Square area (Clinton a/k/a Hell's Kitchen) - which is replete with hotels across the financial spectrum - is probably about $10 to $15 - so, while everything adds up, between say three people, that is not that bad if the hotels there are much cheaper.

It got mixed reviews on the review site. I think it has West in the title, i forgot exactly. But it got overall 3 stars I think. I noticed on a couple of hotels, people from California gave it one star, while most other people gave it 3-4  I noticed some of the comments on some hotels were "the room is pretty small, even for NY" so I gather the California people are used to bigger hotel rooms?
Yes, I'd love to go to a Click n Drag. Don't know about it, but it sounds fun. I'm pretty game. The itinerary in my head  goes something like this: Get there Thurs night, Fri day meet ledge people, do ledge stuff, whatever, go to NOTS. Sat - I was thinking a little shopping, (or looking around at stuff i wish i could buy  ) - general look aroundedness. Sat. night, GO OUT (undetermined destination) And Sunday - it's kinda dorky, but i really wanted to rollerblade in Central Park. I feel like I should (cause i want to) see it. Then probably leave Sun. night or mon. morning, depending on how much my hotel is gonna cost me. :)

No, they're just parties. Sometimes they'd have performers like The Fishsticks or The Dueling Bankheads, other times they had theme nights. The costumes are very wild and outlandish, rather jolting for first-timers. There's lots of rampant sexuality making the rounds, too.

As for why I like them, I think they're fun. Nice, open people who like to have a good time. And of course I dress up, it would defeat the purpose if I didn't. Aren't you going to dress up for NOTS? You'll stick out like a horse's ass if you don't.
yeah, I'll dress up, but probably not to the nines, because of fundage, and the fact that i wouldn't look like stevie anyway. I look terrible with blond hair! There's that line where I want to look like stevie, but i want to look pretty, too. :D Even though the theme this year is gold, I still want to wear black. But i was thinking of making a fabulous gold shawl out of beads and such (yes, I make jewelry - I replaced lots of the straps on my tanktops with beady sparkly straps and they are gorg!) anyways - and having my skin covered in gold. I was debating about a blond wig, or cutting bangs to look more like stevie, but if i cut bangs i'll still have really dark hair,(plus pain in the ass bangs for like, 3 years afterwords  ) and if I wear a blond wig, i probably won't be able to find exactly the right style/one i want, and i might look ugly, too. We'll see how the fundage and the wig finding goes.
Hmmm, I didn't know you dressed up for those things. I'm starting to get a vibe on why you like them. And yes, the openminded people and rampant sexuality are great. What do girls who go to those parties wear?

Gag is right.
A few years ago when I lived up there, I had gone grocery shopping at this tiny little store and when I walked out, some bastard mauled me down and stole my groceries. I grabbed and orange and threw it at him as hard as I could, but he kept running with my goddamned groceries. My super kept offering me oranges all summer and laughing at me.

They wear the same kind of stuff as the guys. If I can find some of my old pictures (key word being IF because I've no idea where they are), I can post some photos from one of the parties. I still have a fake tit some guy gave me, too.

Oohhhhh! So everyone looks like a girl, and if someone's really good, you may not know who you're randomly kissing/groping?
That sounds really fun, even though I would miss the cute boys who look like boys element (what can i say? I like boys!  ) Geez, maybe i should invest in some fake tits, too...or people are not gonna believe i'm a girl! (which could be fun  ) What kind of girl stuff do you usually wear, there? What's your "girl outfit" of choice? do you get fake boobs, too? Do you wear skirts and shave your legs? How come there are no lesbians there? They have their own events?

Oh, by the way, check out this tile!!! It's not that style, but i just wanted to show this tile cause it's so gorgeous. My cousin was an artist in NY and lived in a Manhattan loft throughout the 80's and most of the nineties, and her gay husband  who was a sculptor made this tile, I think. She subsequently moved to Atlanta, and now lives in Fiorenza, Italy, I think.
Anyways, cool tile, yeah.

That is very interesting tile!!!!!! Some of the tile painters, apparently like this one, are just so talented - they choose the most vibrabt colors and it all is like a painting.
Interestingly, did you knoy that the "paintings" in St. Peter's Basilica are not paintings at all, but mosaics, which is just another word for tile. Personally, I think the Portuguese make the best tiles in the world

I am not a picture tile person unless it is in an place like the Vatican. BUT - the tile you showed in interesting, vibrant, cohesive, and almost Dali-esq. I like it, but would not put it in my bathroom. My bathroom would be travertine with chrome or perhaps nickel fixtures.

I see what you mean, and actually, I like minimalism as well. But I like certain things to be lush and colorful - basically, my design tastes run to "mutt", but then, I don't have too much design knowledge. I actually like a lot of different things, depending on which room and what you have to work with. I know I hate when things are placed non symmetrically (I guess that applies mainly to wall space, though furniture could drive me mad, too), I have a hyper sense of space/shape balance. I also like things to look clean, spare, and airy, but I think strong colors look good with that. If you have a few beautifully colored things, not to cluttered, I think it brings warmth and beauty that is sometimes lacking with "beige" and "Black and White". But for my bathroom, I wouldn't mind that tile at all. It is soothing to me, and goes along with the whole "bath" vibe. Of course, good lighting is also another "must" I feel like such a closet designer. You know, someone who thinks they have a good eye, but has never studied design or seen all of what's available in the world? I have to content myself with "picking out my friend's clothes"

Still no word from Miss Hell's Angel herself, but Ry is in if he can get the time off from work. Problem is he won't know until April :( I'll probably just buy 2 tix anyway. What's $15 lost if it doesn't work out.

I am planning on getting there Thurs. night. I want to be "in place and prepared" when the sh** really starts to go down. And it would be nice ( I think) for the people who are arriving on the day to have a touchpoint, if I'm able to be that. It really comforts me (as a Cancer  ) to not be too stressed out on the actual day, and be able to meet with people, get dressed in my outfit, etc, while the residue of travel is behind me. :) Especially so because I have never gone anywhere on a plane by myself. (I've really only traveled about 4 hours away by myself, in a car, to Chico. And I get nervous doing that! ) But I'm looking forward to the challenge - a lot of times I am scared of something for no reason, (probably especially travel) and I have to remember that my brain is powerful, and that I can read maps and instructions, and as long as I have enough money with me, it will all turn out ok! And also that most people are infinitely kind and helpful if I do get in a jam.
Right now the only thing that is making me "nervous" is coordinating everyone. But that is not really up to me, so i am letting go of any "control freak-edness" I may have. :wavey:

I also kinda figured there might be people who have to come and leave right away (like Krista) and may not want to get a hotel or whatever, so. But i'm thinking of a lot of "just in case" things right now.
