Passion DID at least get 3 noms. Cinematography, makeup, and score! (IMO...it should have been nom for best actor (Jim Caviezel) and best actress (Maia Morgenstern)
and no Phantom of the Opera noms? or did I overlook that!?!

I actually thought DiCaprio did a great job. Despite looking nothing like Hughes, I felt the pulled it off. Maybe because I've always been interested in Howard Hughes anyway.
But it doesn't matter who was nominated in the Best Actor category - Jamie Foxx is a shoo-in.

Me too.
I have to say - apart from the emotion in the story that many apparently felt due to their religious beliefs, the acting was not that great. He did an okay job, but hardly Oscar worthy. She, on the other hand, was IMO geat and an Academy Award nomination would not have been out of the question

I like the nominations (limited Passion, no Birth  ) except for the exclusion of La chiavi di casa from the best foreign-language movie category ... that's life.
The race for best actress should be interesting, I hope it will go to Catalina Sandino Moreno or especially to Imelda Staunton who's just incredible but that would request some courage from Academy voters so I doubt it will happen.
For some of the others, I hope:
Best movie: The Aviator
Best director: Mike Leigh or Scorsese (he has to win sooner or later)
Best actor: Johnny Depp
Best supporting actress: Cate Blanchett
Best supporting actor: Alan Alda
Best foreign-language film-The sea Inside
Best cinematography- Zhao Xiaoding (House Of Flying Daggers)
Best art direction: Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo (The Aviator)
Even if probably the Oscar night wouldn't go exactly in my direction :p

The Aviator isn't Scorsese's best film, but it's a film about Hollywood, about making movies and those voting for these things are gonna take that to heart, plus the fact it's a travesty Scorsese has never won one before.
They said the same thing about Gangs of New York.
I hope Cate Blanchett wins too, her performance as Kate Hepburn was superb. Love, love, love Cate. Her British accent in The Life Aquatic was so sweet and charming too.
I love her to pieces, but Madsen is my gal.
And why is Before Sunset up for Best Adapted Screenplay? That's an original work by Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy based on characters Linklater created himself for Before Sunrise! Very odd.
Don't mention Delpy! I'm still mourning the fact that they passed her over for Audrey Tatou in The Da Vinci Code!

Lux - I agree Cate is fab.
Also, I also LOVED Taxi Driver ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075314/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9dGF4aWRyaXZlcnxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc=1;ft=20; fm=1 ) , though it was hard to watch because it was blisteringly harsh. But, therein is MS' brilliance. He knows how to portray the emotion so well. I mean look at The Age of Innocence ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106226/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9YWdlIG9mIGlubm9jZW5jZXxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc= 1;ft=20;fm=1 ) - in which he semingly effortlessly captured the beauty of that era while also humorously and tragically noting the ugly things like the hypocrisy of that era as well. I also think "Gangs of New York," ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217505/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9Z2FuZ3Mgb2YgbmV3IHlvcmt8aHRtbD0xfG5tPW9u;fc= 1;ft=21;fm=1 )while not my fav. film, also seemingly effortless portrayed this same thing.
So, I think MS will win for his body of work - while not really fair, it happens
Finally, he ususally has Mt Rushmore for a cast doesn't he  AND he brings out the best in ALL of them IMO

I LOVED Titanic. I thought it was well done. I know it was a tired ole class warfare love story, but the romantic setting just knocked me over. I did not really care about him too much in that because Kate W. outshone him and IMO Kathy Bates' portrayal of Milly Brown stole the show
I LOVED Gangs - but the storyline to me bordered on far fetched - or at least to confusing, esp. the end riots. I get that MS was going for the end of an era (represented by Bill - which was the best portrayal in Day Lewis' BRILIIANT career including Age of Innocence which was a close second) - and the beginning of a new one rep. by Leo. D.'s character - but it did not play that well with me, though bad Scorsese is like pizza - even when it is bad, it is still pretty good

Wow strand, I am pleased that you would admit you LOVED Titanic because I did too and am just chicken to admit it I guess, hehe. This movie had me spellbound before it even came out and I just HAD to see it opening night which is completely not my style. I usually wait for the fuss to die down a bit. I was entranced.

Bates was awesome, "What's wrong with you people!"
You know, there was a thing in Kate's voice that aggravated me, the affectation you may also be thinking of. It is especially pronounced in the scene where she discovers his sketches. But I was just caught up in it all, I actually identified with her character pretty strongly because at the time I was about to marry someone I was not in love with. But I didn't do it.

I haven't seen Ray, but why is everyone peeing themselves over Jamie Foxx? I mean, I like him OK, but what was so great about his performance? Is it because he impersonated/recreated Ray Charles so well? Or because it's his first "real" acting gig (as opposed to just being a goofball on In Living Color and crap like Booty Call)?
I'm not sure how I feel about a BAOscar going to someone just because he can act exactly like someone else, especially when Ray Charles advised Jamie while filming the movie.

Others include (in no particular order)
Gone With the Wind - Leigh and Gable - SWOON
All About Eve - Bette at her best and Monroe almost steals it from her in the scenes they are in
Out of Africa - Streep at her best
The Nightmare Before Christmas - great execution and clever theme
The Age of Innocence - BRILLIANT
Now Voyager - Oh Davis in melodrama - "I'm not afraid"
Sadie Thompson (remaining reels) - Swanson's best silent IMO
Born Yesterday - hysterical
Lord of the Rings (the trilody) - breathtaking and epic

Oh, and I would like to add "Jezebel" to my favorite movies list...and..."The Letter" - a cheesy masterpiece directed by William Wyler. :)
Jezebel was FAB., esp the end when she "redeems" herself by going to the Yellow Fever Island with the man she loves
As for The Letter - I liked it - but PHEW MELODRAMA
I also like The Lost Weekend and Come back Little Sheba - though they are both hard to watch.
I thought A Place in the Sun was magnificent SOLELY for La Taylor in her first scene in that dress and her completely unware air - PHEW
I also LOVED Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf - In many ways I lived on a daily basis that entire movie with my ex

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte - WHAT do you think I invited you here for - COMPANY?" - "You're a mean vile sorry little bitch!"
The Silence of the Lambs and, though not as much - Hannible - It puts the lotion on its skin
LOVE Sweet Charlotte. I like to watch that one, Straight Jacket with Crawford, and The Bad Seed all in a row.
Did you ever read the book for Hannibal? My, how they butchered it for the movie.
Let's see, other favorites are:
Ruthless People - "I've been kidnapped by K-Mart!"
The Saddest Music In the World- Isabella Rossellini is FABULOUS
Dawn of the Dead (remake)- Don't ask me why, but I *love* this movie and it's not because Jake Weber is in it
Don't Look Now- Scary as all get out, the first movie that really freaked me out
Dogville- Loooooooooove this movie
In the Spirit- If I ever met anyone else who has seen this, I'd DIE
Pretty much anything with/by Elaine May
Most Woody Allen movies

Not all of it - I think there were some recent winners - I think Iris was great (though that was really more of an Indie with a famous cast) - I also liked Ray, Being Julia, the one about the British abortionist, Phantom of the Opera (beautiful music beautiful cast - SHEEBUS  ) , Collateral, and a few others. But, yes, there is a lot of junk out there
Vera Drake is all indie. That's a Mike Leigh flick. Being Julia was quite the rarity, that was fabulous.
Ray did nothing for me. Collateral was good, I thought. Couldn't pay me to see Phantom, unfortunately.

Eileen Heckart will always be one of my faves simply based on that performance alone. LOVE her in that movie. And I kinda dug how they changed the ending from the original play.

Well, I thought the book sucked major ass (ESPECIALLY the dinner scene and the ending, it came out of left ****ing field and I loathed it), but they missed the boat by deleting the bodybuilder sister. What a fudge up.

That is one of my all-time favorite movies. My tape is literally worn out, the colors are so muted at this point that it's almost black and white. I am so in love with that one. Put it on DVD, for cripes sake! That scene where Peter Falk faints and Marlo Thomas gives him a Shirley Maclaine book? Priceless.

"Bus Stop" is not so good. Her accent is way off, and she and her love interest had no chemistry at all. I have never understood why so many consider it to be her best performance.

I know, she shoulda put that ass there. It's an ass for the ages...
I agree about her acting. I don't think she really was a very natural actress - with a few exceptions. But from studying her chart, I understand. Yes, she did rely on her coaches, but i think they actually helped her. A gemini with moon in aquarius will have a hard time accessing any "natural" emotions.
The power of her personality was strong, luckily. For her best performance, and being cast the best, I would have to vote for "Niagra" or maybe..."the misfits" - but the misfits would definitely be behind niagra...
